Street had arrived at Joe's on time. He was waiting outside the entrance to the restaurant when his phone beeped.
Everything will be fine, you'll see Street. Be yourself, don't pretend and please, think sometimes before you speak ;-) Chris
At first he rolled his eyes, but then there was a big grin on his lips. Chris. She was always there for him and he felt that their friendship had regained the depth and solidity it had before all the disasters.
As he was about to put his phone away he saw Molly. She walked up to him and smiled uncertainly. He smiled back slightly.
"Hi Molly, glad it worked out." he looked at her like a little boy who had been up to mischief.
"Hi Jim, yes I'm glad we have a chance to talk now." Molly went ahead and sat at the table, Street across from her. After they ordered a drink, Street wanted to know how her case in Pittsburgh had been. Molly talked about it enthusiastically, and that's how Street knew her. She always gave everything for her clients.
"You really do your job with a lot of heart Molly, I've always admired that about you." Street looked at her and smiled slightly.
"Thanks Jim, but it's the same with you. What you do every day on SWAT is insane." She looked down at her hands and swallowed briefly before looking directly at him again. "Jim. Why didn't you tell me sooner that you didn't love me enough?" and there was the question Street had been so afraid of. The relaxed atmosphere between them instantly gave way to tension. What should he tell her now? The truth, of course; Molly deserved that, and so did Chris.
He took a deep breath and looked at Molly. He couldn't be a coward again now, no. "Molly I - where do I start? I was really happy with you, we had good times and you made me feel good. Erika's death - " he broke off for a moment and swallowed again. "Erika's death was a huge shock for all of us, as you noticed. When she was lying there and Chris resuscitated her, I was just relieved that it wasn't her." Now Street's guilty conscience came up again. Towards Chris, Molly and also Erika. "I realized how quickly life can end, especially with our job." he looked at Molly, she had tears in her eyes. "For days I hated myself, you noticed how restless I slept and when I shut you out in front of the HQ in the morning when you asked me what was going on, I felt so sorry, I really did. Then to see Chris walk in too, how broken she was, I, I couldn't help it."
"I noticed the way you looked at Chris that morning. I wasn't blind Jim, I had my thoughts too and not just since that moment." said Molly calmly. Street realized that Molly must have suspected something much longer, but why hadn't she said?
"After work that day, I was already on my way to your house, but halfway there, I knew where I had to go, to Chris's." he paused, waiting for Molly's reaction. She looked at him, he could see no anger or sadness in her face. She looked calm, as if she was at peace with herself and with him as well. "I stood outside Chris' door and told her that all I could think about was being with her. I had to say it or it would have torn me up inside Molly. I know that's absolutely no excuse for my shitty behavior, but maybe you can at least understand me a little?" he looked at her hopefully. "I was a coward Molly, too cowardly to tell you the truth, I couldn't even properly end our relationship and I'm sorry, from the bottom of my heart. I had put you in a terrible situation. I hope someday you can forgive me and we can be normal with each other." his look was gentle and full of regret. Molly swallowed and put her hand on Street's. He seemed puzzled.
"Jim, listen. You hurt me terribly back then, I can't deny that. For a long time I racked my brains why you broke up with me, because you never gave me a real answer, until tonight. I think I can handle it pretty well now and look at it with some distance because I'm really happy again myself." she smiled at Street and blushed slightly.
"Oh ok, ehm, I'm glad to hear that." he looked innocently at Molly, grinned and cleared his throat, unable to really hide the fact that he already knew.
"Jim, is it possible you know more than you're letting on?" Molly looked at him, frowning. Street felt caught. "How do you know I'm in a relationship again?" continued Molly. He had no choice but to answer Molly honestly.
"Well, Chris told me. She had noticed how nervous I was before we talked and I was really afraid this was going to backfire, so she wanted to take some of that tension away." He admitted a little uncertainly.
"Hey, it's okay. I'm not mad at you or Chris." Molly said softly.
"Erika's death was horrible, I realized how much it had affected you and hearing the whole story from you today makes me see some things again with different eyes. You know, the bad thing is that I've had the feeling for a long time that you felt more for Chris than friendship, but I had repressed it just like you repressed your feelings for her. Right?" Street was gobsmacked. Molly had just voiced exactly what Street had suppressed for a really long time.
Molly continued. "I'm not judging you Jim, I never have. You're a great man and Chris is lucky to have you. I know it won't be easy for you with the rules at SWAT, but if you really love her, you'll fight for her Jim, she's all worth it." Molly smiled at him.
"I don't even know what to say Molly? I don't really deserve you being so nice to me and I was really dreading tonight I must say." now Street laughed. Molly couldn't help it and got on board. Who would have thought that the conversation would be so harmonious, honest and peaceful... The two sat together for a while and Molly had to share a few details about Ethan.
On the way home, Street drove to Chris's apartment. When he reached the top, he knocked on the door. Several times he had to knock until it was opened. A sleepy Chris peeked her head out.
"Street, what the hell are you doing here? Did you even look at the clock?"
"Sorry to bother you so late, but I really need to tell you about the talk I had with Molly." and already he had pushed past Chris and was inside the apartment.
"Come on in." muttered Chris more to herself, shaking his head.
She joined him on the sofa.
"Well, go ahead then. You obviously can't wait." Chris laughed.
"It was really nice Chris. I didn't think it would be so harmonious and it shows again what a fine person Molly is." he said appreciatively. He told Chris every detail, including Molly's thoughts after the breakup. Only one point he left out, Chris didn't have to know that Molly had long suspected that Street had feelings for Chris. He didn't want to ruin the pleasant mood between them again, knowing how Chris felt about it.
"I'm really glad you guys have talked things out and can get back to normal. Then there's nothing standing in the way of a dream wedding." Chris was very happy for her friend and Molly, but now she only wanted one thing: to sleep.
