Hey everyone!
Oh my gosh, it's been a super long time since I've uploaded anything on here! I've been taking some time to myself recently to work on my mental health which is why I took a break from writing, but I'm back now! Thank you all for the kind messages, I appreciate it:)

"Blaine, right?" The doctor skimmed his clipboard, momentarily distracted.
"Yeah." Blaine stood, giving the doctor his full attention. "What did you find out? What's wrong with her?"
"Would you mind coming with me so we can talk in private?" The man suggested, nodding towards the door. "I think it's best if I tell you first."
Blaine glanced back at his mother, a worried look in his eyes. Kurt saw this, and immediately stood. "I'll stay here with her. You go ahead."
Blaine flashed him a grateful smile. "Okay, thanks. I'll be right back." He followed the doctor out into the hallway, closing the door behind him.
"I wanted to personally thank you for being here. It's nice to know that Blaine has someone to talk to." Pam sat up slightly in bed, taking a container of lukewarm jello from the tray next to her and opening it. "You two are talking again, right?"
Kurt shrugged, sitting back down in the chair by Pam's bed. "I guess so. We're not friends or anything, but we're on better terms than before."
"That's good. He misses you, I can tell." Pam sighed, tucking a piece of dark brown hair back behind her ear. "I hope whatever's going on isn't too serious."
"I'm sure it's not. And if it is, you're super strong." Kurt offered, suddenly shy for some reason. "You'll be fine, I know you will."
"You're sweet. Thank you." Pam said with a smile.
Their conversation was interrupted when the door opened, Blaine reentering. His face was unreadable as he stood by the door. "I can't believe it."
"What is it?" Pam asked, suddenly tense. "What did he say?"
Blaine approached his mother slowly, sitting at the foot of her bed. "You... your right kidney is failing."
Both boys watched as Pam's face paled, eyes glistening. "What... how? I don't understand."
"The doctor said it has something to do with your blood sugar levels." Blaine swiped at his nose, averting the gaze of his mother. He stood suddenly, almost tripping over the table by Pam's bed. "I need some air." He announced, practically sprinting out the door.
Kurt sighed. "I'll talk to him, you stay here. The doctor will be here soon."
"Okay." Pam spoke quietly, forehead wrinkled with concern.
Kurt left the room, shutting the door softly behind him. He saw Blaine immediately- he was sitting against the wall, hands covering his face. Kurt awkwardly approached him, sitting down carefully. "Hey. It'll be okay."
Blaine firmly shook his head. "No, it won't. I should've figured it out sooner. Maybe they could've stopped it and things wouldn't be so-" his voice cracked as he shuddered, tears running down his face.
"Don't. It's not your fault. You can't blame yourself." Kurt stated, concern gripping at his insides. "I did the same thing when my mom got sick, and again with my dad. It's no one's fault, I promise you."
"How do you know?" Blaine looked up at Kurt, hazel eyes rimmed with red. "You weren't there. You didn't see the way she looked at me, like her life depended on it. I'm all she has. It's my job to take care of her."
"That might be true, but you also have to make sure you're taking care of yourself." Kurt hesitated before taking his hand. "You're a very compassionate person, but I think that sometimes you forget about your own well-being."
Blaine sighed. "What am I supposed to do? Just sit here and watch her suffer? I can't see her upset again, not after what happened with my dad."
"There are options, you know. Donors and stuff. She's not going to suffer." Kurt tried to sound convincing as he said this. The truth was, he had no idea what was going to happen. It could take years to get organ transplants, he knew this from experience.
Blaine stood, dusting off his pants. Kurt did the same, slightly confused. "Blaine? What are you doing?"
"I'm going to go talk to the doctor. I want to give my mom a kidney." Blaine's eyes were determined as he said this.
Kurt was a little shocked at these words. "Blaine, this is a big deal. I'm not even sure you can donate until you're eighteen."
"My birthday's in two months, it'll be fine."
Kurt nodded slowly. "Well, that's really nice of you."
Blaine paused, suspicious. "Wait, you're not going to try and talk me out of it?"
Kurt shook his head. "No. They're your kidneys. It's not my decision to make."
Blaine nodded. "Okay. Do you mind staying with my mom a little while longer? I need to find the doctor."
"Not at all. Oh, and good luck."
Blaine smiled a little. "Thanks."
Kurt watched him go, curls bouncing as he walked away.
"Well?" Kurt whispered, trying not to wake up Pam.
Blaine nodded. "I'm eligible. They're double checking the blood work but they think it's a match."
"That's great." Kurt was at a loss for words as he sat there, an awkward silence lingering in the air. "When will you know for sure?"
"Tomorrow." Blaine sat down next to Kurt. "You can go if you want to. I mean, you already stayed here last night and all day today. This is your college break, I don't want you spending the whole time in a hospital."
Kurt shrugged. "It's okay. Besides, I still have two and a half months of break. It won't take up the whole time."
"You know, you're a really cool person for doing this. I know so many people who'd be all weird about it, but not you." Blaine offered a smile. "It's just... comfortable, you know?"
"Yeah, I do." Kurt hesitated before speaking again. "I was thinking, and... if for some reason you can't donate your kidney I want to donate mine."
Blaine's eyebrows shot up. "Kurt, you don't have to do that. I can't let you."
"I want to. Seriously." Kurt insisted. "I want to help in any way I can."
"Wow. Um, thank you." Blaine was at a loss for words. He could barely think straight as he sat there, staring into Kurt's eyes. Somehow they seemed almost bluer in the dark, and he couldn't stop looking at them.
Before either of them realized what was happening their faces were inches apart. Blaine felt his heart skip a beat. He didn't dare move and risk ruining the moment between them.
Kurt was speechless. What was happening to him? One minute he was talking to Blaine and the next they were gazing at each other in the way they used to. He could see Blaine's eyes flickering down towards his lips, and a part of Kurt was tempted to just... no, he couldn't let this happen, he just couldn't. "We... we should probably get some sleep." Kurt blurted, quickly pulling away.
Blaine felt disappointed for a quick second, but covered it up the best he could. "Yeah, you're right. Goodnight, I guess."
"Yeah, goodnight." Kurt repeated, laying down across two of the four chairs. His mind was cluttered, a million thoughts going through it. He was tossing and turning, willing sleep to come. He probably only got about two hours of rest that night, and when the light coming in from the windows hit his face he slowly opened his eyes, sitting up.
"You're awake." Pam observed, offering a smile. "We were just about to get some breakfast. Well, Blaine was. I can't stand the food here."
Kurt laughed. "It is pretty bad. They do have good waffles though, I recommend them."
"Really?" Pam raised an eyebrow. Unlike her son she kept her brows pretty well groomed. "Maybe I'll request some when the nurse comes back."
"I can go get them for you if you want. I was going to freshen up in the bathroom anyway."
"That would be great, thank you." Pam checked the clock on her bedside table. "I might see if I can go home for a quick shower at some point this morning, I feel disgusting."
Kurt smiled. "Yeah, those hospital beds will do that to you. That and the medicine smell." He grabbed his bag, standing. "I'll be back in a couple minutes."
He walked into the bathroom, checking himself in the mirror. He took a comb from his bag, running it through his hair. His whole body hurt from sleeping on chairs all night, and there was a cluster of pimples that had magically appeared on his chin. He sighed loudly. Of course this had to happen today of all days. He glanced quickly around the bathroom, making sure he was alone before pulling out a small bottle of concealer. The plus side of having a woman around the house was that now makeup was far more accessible.
Once Kurt was somewhat satisfied with his appearance he headed to the cafeteria, picking up a plate of waffles and a bottle of water before circling back around to the hospital room.
Pam sat up when she saw him. "Thank you so much." She took a bite of waffle, a surprised look on her face. "Wow, you were right. These are good."
"Yeah, well, I ate a ton of them while my mom was sick."
"Oh yeah, I forgot you mentioned that." Pam ate another piece of waffle, balancing the plate on her knees to wipe her mouth. "If you don't mind me asking, what did she have? Sorry if that's insensitive, I'm just curious."
"No, it's fine." Kurt reassured. "She had breast cancer. They probably could've saved her if
we'd realized it sooner, but by the time she got checked out it was already stage 4 and had spread."
"Oh my, I'm so sorry."
"It's okay. I was only six when she died, so I don't remember a lot of what happened." Kurt shrugged absentmindedly. "That's part of why I'm here. I know it might sound weird, but I kind of feel closer to her this way."
Pam nodded understandingly. "That's not weird at all. And for the record I'm glad that you're here."
Kurt opened his mouth to answer just as Blaine walked in, balancing a box of doughnuts in one hand and a coffee in the other. He paused when he saw Kurt. "Oh hey, I didn't know you were up."
"Oh, um, yeah. I was just getting ready and stopped to get Pam some waffles." Kurt said awkwardly.
"Right." Blaine set the box down on a chair. "I would've gotten you a coffee if I knew."
"It's okay. I'm not that tired anyway."
"I did get extra doughnuts if you want some. Vanilla frosted." Blaine said this nonchalantly, like he hadn't planned on getting Kurt's favorite.
"Thanks." Kurt picked up one of the doughnuts from the box, taking a bite. He lowered his voice to a whisper. "So, any word about the kidney?"
"Yeah, actually. They said that I'm a match." Blaine replied with a smile. "I think I'm going to try and see if they can do it today."
Kurt nodded. "I'm really happy for you. Have you talked to your mom about it yet?"
"No, I still need to tell her."
"Tell me what?" Pam raised an eyebrow. "You two sure are acting secretive. Is there something I need to know?"
Blaine ran a hand through his hair. "Actually yeah, there is. I talked to your doctor yesterday."
"Oh no, is there something else wrong with me?" Pam's eyes widened with fear.
"No, actually it's the opposite of that." Blaine took a deep breath, reaching for his mom's hand. "I want to help you. I already took a bunch of tests and I'm a match. I want to donate my kidney to you."
Blaine watched as his mother's face changed. "Honey, that's very sweet of you, but I can't let you do that for me. You're so young and I can't accept an organ from my own kid."
"Mom, I already signed. I'm doing this, and you can't stop me." Blaine's voice was firm as he said this.
Pam wiped her eyes, nose running. "Come here." She hugged Blaine close to her. "You are such an amazing person. Are you sure you want to do this?"
"Yes." Blaine didn't even hesitate. "I think I'm going to see if we can do it today. I just want you to be healthy again."
Kurt watched as they hugged some more. A small part of him felt a little jealous. He wished his mother was still alive so they could experience moments like this. Carole was an amazing step- mom, but it just wasn't the same.
The rest of the day seemed to go by pretty fast. The doctor agreed to go through with the surgery, and Kurt watched as Blaine and his mother were wheeled into an operating room. He sat in the waiting room to wait, restless as ever. After almost an hour, one of the assistants re-emerged from the room. "It's done. They're both resting right now, but you can come in if you want."
Kurt followed her into the room, eyes landing on the two people laying motionless in their beds. Ms. Anderson was sound asleep, the only movement coming from her chest as she breathed. Blaine seemed a little less out of it, and as Kurt approached his side of the room he slowly opened his eyes. "Kurt? Where am I? Am I dying?"
Kurt laughed. "No, Blaine, you're not dying. You just came out of surgery."
"Surgery?" Blaine's hazel eyes widened. "I'm sick?"
"Not exactly... you donated your kidney. You probably just don't remember since they gave you a ton of drugs." Kurt sat down on the end of his bed, awkwardly crossing his legs. "How do you feel?"
"I feel great! We have to go, we'll be late for prom!" Blaine tried to get up, but Kurt pushed him back down.
"Blaine, we're not going to prom. You're confused because of the anesthesia."
"What? No, we have plans! We're in love!" Blaine exclaimed, taking Kurt by the hand. "I know you want to get married but we need to wait."
Kurt didn't know what to say. It would be easier to just play along, but he couldn't bring himself to do that. "Blaine, we broke up. About five months ago. We're not in love anymore."
"You're so funny, stop lying to me. Let's sing a song." Blaine cleared his throat and began to sing.
Kurt watched in awe as he practically belted twinkle twinkle little star. He had no idea what to say. "Maybe you should get some rest. You might feel better."
"Stay with me!" Blaine whined. "I can't be in here all alone. Plus, we're dating so it's normal."
Kurt hesitated. "How about I just sit here and you go to sleep? This bed is super small anyway."
"You're no fun." Blaine said with a sigh, yawning loudly. "But okay. I guess we can compromise. That's what relationships are about anyway."
Kurt didn't even bother correcting him again- obviously it wouldn't work. Besides, Blaine was already fast asleep.
Kurt slowly stood, leaving the room. He pulled out his phone, hesitating as his finger lingered over the number. Blaine's number. He sighed, pressing the unblock button without another thought. It didn't mean anything, right? He just needed to tell Blaine where he was so he wasn't completely confused when he woke up.
He sent a quick text before heading home, tossing his bag onto the couch.
"Wow, you look... awful." Finn observed from his spot on the couch.
"Thanks for that, it really means a lot." Kurt's voice dripped with sarcasm as he said this. "Is Rachel here?"
"Nope, she just left. Why?"
"Just wondering. I really don't need anyone else seeing me like this, it's humiliating."
Finn shrugged. "I was just messing around, you don't look that bad. Just kind of tired."
"And that's better how?" Kurt asked, taking an apple from the fridge.
"I never said it was better, just that it's not that bad." Finn pointed out. "Anyway, how's Ms. Anderson? Is she okay?"
Kurt nodded. "Yeah, she'll be fine. Her kidney was failing so Blaine donated his. They're recovering right now."
"Wow, really? That's a pretty big deal. Did it go well?"
"I think so. Blaine's super confused, but otherwise okay." Kurt sat down on the other side of the couch, sighing with satisfaction. He couldn't remember the last time he'd sat on a comfortable surface, and it sure felt great to be home.
"Confused how?" Finn asked, opening a bag of chips.
"He just keeps saying we're together. It's from the anesthesia, the doctor said that it can cause weird stuff to happen." Kurt took another bite of apple, trying to seem nonchalant. The last thing he wanted to talk about was Blaine, mostly because he was beyond conflicted.
"Well, speaking of getting together, you got a letter yesterday. From Gabe." Finn handed it to his brother with a wink. "You should open it, maybe it's a love note."
"Shut up, he's probably just wondering how my summer is." Kurt peeled open the back of the envelope, pulling out its contents. He skimmed over the letter. Sure enough, the whole letter was pretty much about how guitar was going and what Kurt had been up to. It was sweet, and Kurt made a mental note to write him back as soon as he could.
"Well? What's it say?" Finn prodded.
"He was just wondering about guitar and what I've been doing." Kurt folded the note, sticking it into his pocket. "I think I'm going to go shower."
"Okay. Are you sleeping here tonight?"
"I think so. I'll head back to the hospital tomorrow."
Kurt went upstairs and stepped into the shower, sighing at the sensation. It felt so good to be clean again. As soon as he got out his phone chimed. He checked the message. Gabe. Kurt opened it, reading what he'd written.
He was kind of shocked as he read over it, but typed up his response, pressing send. There was a whoosh sound as the text went through, and Kurt blushed. He'd missed texting Gabe while he'd been at the hospital, and it felt amazing to finally talk again.
"Hey, come on in." Blaine sat up a little, grimacing at the pain. After he'd had some time to recover the nurse had moved him to his own room a couple doors down.
"How are you?" Kurt asked, approaching slowly. "Does it hurt?"
Blaine shrugged. "Only a little. The meds they give me really help."
"I'm glad. Did they make you take your shirt off or was that a fashion statement?" Kurt joked.
"I wish I could say it was by choice, but unfortunately it's not." Blaine sipped from a glass of water by his bed, careful not to spill. "The nurses say I was a little crazy yesterday."
"Yeah, that's one way to put it." Kurt shifted his weight from foot to foot. "You kind of tried to take me to prom, and after I told you it was because of the drugs you sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. It was kind of hilarious."
Blaine covered his face with his hands. "Oh my gosh, I'm humiliated. What do you mean I tried to take you to prom?"
Kurt shrugged. "I guess for some reason you thought it was prom night."
Blaine cleared his throat, suddenly nervous. "Kurt, can I ask you something?"
"Okay." Kurt gulped. He knew what was coming next, and he wasn't looking forward to it.
"The other night. When we were talking. We... we almost kissed." Blaine stated, biting his lip. "I just... I don't know why I'm bringing this up."
"I get it. I felt it too." Kurt sat down, gaze on the floor. "I think it's because we're so used to kissing that in the moment it almost felt normal. I'm sorry I pulled away like that, it's just-"
"I understand. You just want to be acquaintances." Blaine said with a shrug. "Honestly, I'm just glad you're talking to me again. It's a start."
"But that's all it is." Kurt blurted suddenly. "Blaine, I can't do this again. I don't want to get back together. I don't want to go through all of this pain for a second time."
Blaine nodded slowly. "I know. I do miss being a couple, but I miss your friendship even more. Do you think we could hang out again sometime? As friends."
Kurt smiled. "I'd like that." He paused, considering. "Can I ask for your advice on something? Since that's what friends do?"
"Always. What's going on?"
Kurt blushed, suddenly embarrassed. "So... There's this boy. And I want to be with him. I just can't tell if he wants to be with me."
Blaine raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised. "Who is he, do I know him?"
Kurt nodded. "It's Gabe, my roommate. Up until yesterday I thought he was straight, but then... then he sent me this." Kurt unlocked his phone, leaning over to show Blaine the text.
"Wait... he sent I miss you with a heart emoji?" Blaine almost laughed. "Kurt, that's not something guys send unless..."
"Unless?" Kurt questioned.
"Unless they like you. I think you should go for it. Ask him. Who knows, maybe he's bi."
"True. He has a girlfriend though, so I want to make sure I wait to make a move until they break up."
Blaine laughed. "That's probably a good idea. I've missed this."
Kurt smiled back. "So have I."
So, what did you think? I really wanted to add some backstory to Blaine and Pam's relationship and show how his family problems brought them together. I know some of you are discouraged about Kurt's infatuation with Gabe, but I promise this will all make sense in the end...
In the meantime, be sure to comment what you'd like to see in future chapters! I've also been debating changing the rating of this fanfic to M due to a few of the topics included in it... let me know what your thoughts are, I love hearing from you guys!
Until next time xx
