Hi everyone, I had this story in mind for quite a long time, and I'm finally posting it. I apologize for the mistakes you may find since English's my second language, but I'll do my best to avoid them.
This story is based in an alternate dimension of Pokémon, of course, the main characters have the heroes' names, and it's not a coincidence at all. They live in a world where pokémon do not exist in their everyday life. If you want, it's like "Attack on Titan" or "Divergent" for the setting of the plot, to get you a better idea.
I'll update this fiction very slowly, so some support would be appreciated. See you for the next chapter!
The Wall.
Chapter 1.
There had been a time when humans and pokémon were friends. A time when they would tag team along, and battle foes to seek for the strongest of them. A time when the Aura guardians eyed the world and helped to enforce peace everywhere.
This was before the Great Fall, led by a merciless man who seeked for power till the non-return point. Although some weirdos tried to control Time, or Space, or the most powerful pokémon ever known as Mewtwo, or the power of Earth, men were now seeking for immortality. Arceus – the creator of all – was already weakened at that time after having returned to claim the Jewel of Life, and had returned to Their deep slumber and wouldn't be awaken before long. It allowed Giratina to escape from the Distortion World. Of course, the renegade didn't enjoy to see that men full of ambitions were using wicked means to reach their goals – he never liked humans, and that was why he has been banished in the first place. Unable to interfere, Arceus left Their precious world in the hands of corrupted men who used science to reach selfish goals, thus triggering a war between pokémon and humans.
The Aura guardians fought for the world's sake, leaving a devastated and wounded earth. Since then, they offered a truce to Giratina who guided thousands of pokémon to end Humanity, and it was decided that a wall would be build to separate apart humans from pokémon. The absolute law was that no men or women ought to go over the wall, and soon, the politicians had to modify history, making sure that the new generations would never hear of pokémon anymore, in order to protect what was left of humanity.
During decades, the law was respected and enforced – both by pokémon who watched the inhabitants and by soldiers who's mission was to protect Humanity, but also inform if something unusual would happen on the pokémon's side. Another dark side of the history of Humanity was that all the Aura Guardians were hunted down till the Government made sure no one was left. Not that they would disobey, but having someone who was able to read human Auras could be problematic if they ever managed to see the pokémon's.
During this period, the city extended, from small villages to a megalopolis. Trees and parks were removed for buildings, skyscrapers, shopping malls, schools, institutions and neighborhood areas. On the pokémon's side, the soldiers noticed that trees were getting bigger and bigger till the point they were unable to see what was behind the forest. The distant hills disappeared from sight and soon the name of Giratina became a legend to scare children when they were nasty. In fact, it was more appropriate to say that people couldn't name the creatures that were behind the wall anymore, nor could they remember why the wall has been built for.
Beep! Beep! Beep!
Jeez! What's up with my alarm clock today?! Why can't I shut it down?!
Beep! Beep!
Gosh! It's Sunday! I didn't ask to be awaken!
"Check the blood pressure!"
Alright! I must still be dreaming then...but what the hell with having an alarm clock in a dream!
Beep! Beep! Beep!
"How's the monitoring?"
"Fine, sir!"
"Alright! Then keep going!"
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!
Jeeeeeez! What's up with the alarm clock? Did I put on the radio? And what the hell is a monitoring?
"Check for the blood pressure! We're losing her!"
Of course, you jackass! I'm dreaming!
Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep!
Alright! Tomorrow, I'll go in town and buy another alarm. That one's starting to get on my nerves. Besides I wasn't aware I could combine the radio and the alarm ring together...I'll ask dad for the color, since I can't see them properly by myself...
"Hurry up! She's dying..."
Yep...what a weird dream...and why am I "dying"?
Ash was leaning against the window, barely keeping an interest at what was said by his teacher. Hearing a lecture about laws and amendments wasn't on his "top three things he must absolutely do in his life", and the twelve-year-old boy had other matters he had to care about, such as what thing he should offer to Cynthia who was sitting two seats before himself. He wished he could go behind the wall to get her some flowers. He heard from his uncle who worked as a soldier that they were growing just next to the doors – that were condemned for ages of course, just in case you've been wondering about their mention – and recently, some humans were allowed to wander around the wall to grow seeds for crops. They were a few, and from the reports, they had to deal with a giant purple cat who didn't seemed to be pleased to talk for whoever lived behind the wall.
While he dreamed of offering his best friend a couple of yellow flowers, he didn't noticed that the teacher had come behind him, and it resulted on feeling a book slamming against the back of his head.
"Mister Ash! What was I talking about?" The teacher snapped. "Hum...over flowers that were to be watered at the end of the day so that the harsh sun doesn't burn their leaves," the boy quickly replied, before adding a "Right, Madam?" to apologize for not listening. The teacher sighed before saying, "You've given a good answer for once, but unfortunately for you since it's a history class, not a biology one!"
The class laughed. Ash gave her a confused glance, already knowing that she would give him extra work by the end of the class. "I was talking about the importance of helping one another inside the wall, that was all!" She snapped, before heading back to her desk. Cynthia shot him an amused-and-so-sorry-for-you look with a thin smile, before the teenagers returned to the content of the lecture. The boy made sure that the teacher didn't feel like he wasn't following what she was saying, while he eyed what he could see of his childhood friend's bright yellow hair. Finally, after what seemed to be an eternity, the bell rang, and the teenagers stood up to pack their bag.
"I'm done," said the boy, scratching his messy hair. "Can't understand what's fascinating about bills and amendments..." "That's because there are the founding of our civilization," said Cynthia. Her light voice made Ash smile. He never felt bored with her, and her blue eyes were so deep that each time he gazed into them, he had the impression that he would get lost forever. "What?" She snapped.
"Huh! Nothing!" He argued back, before glancing at everything but her. "What's wrong with you? Why did you get some interest in flowers? Do you intend to get some for someone?" She added. "Nothing, I told you! Besides I thought about them just because my uncle told me about them, and I don't plan to get some to give them to whoever will want them! Now, get lost!" Came his dry reply.
Ash clasped his hands over his mouth, but Cynthia already heard the words, and before he could get her back with a 'I'm-so-sorry' act, she dashed outside the classroom, telling him that he was just a stupid brat. "Damnit!" He swore, and Ash felt that he would not feel better till he had arrived home. Geez! If only he hadn't think loud, Cynthia would have never be aware of his plans!
Seriously, what was wrong with girls? He didn't ask to speak to Cynthia in a first place. Actually, the only reason she got interested in him was of because of his name when he arrived in highschool. Although the Government made sure none of the ancient history remained in people's mind, they couldn't force them to give up on names too. It occurred that a certain Ash (Ketchum of course! But you already guessed) was famous in the past for an unknown reason, such as a Cynthia too. Although a bunch of parents decided to call their girl Cynthia, the name of Ash had been quite forgotten till the day an old man talked about some teenager called Ash who made a miracle, that he saw it written on a book. The book was soon destroyed, and no one ever heard of the old man anymore, but the news escalated for some times about that teenager who did remarkable things, and the Ash who was secretly found of Cynthia had a famous name.
At some point, the twelve-year-old boy had cursed his first name, but since he couldn't do much about that, he eventually gave up. He finally reached the entrance of the highschool and walked in a slow pace till he would see his house. "Yo, Ash!" Said a voice, and the boy jerked up, before turning around.
"Uncle Aaron! You're here!" Ash beamed. "Yup!" Said a man around his middle-forty, with dark hair and a military uniform, a heavy bag on his left shoulder. "I got a two-days permission to visit your mother, and you of course! Too bad you're my last family!" Aaron brushed the boy's hair, before he announced himself. Ash's mother came out soon, and hugged him tight. "Did you bring me something special?" The boy asked to his uncle. Aaron smiled back, but before he could say a word, Ash's mother asked him to allow Aaron to settle first.
"Can you get him a drink, sweetie?" She asked. Ash nodded and departed to the kitchen area. He came back with a bottle of water and three glasses, and started to poor them with the drink. Aaron thanked him, and took a gulp. "How are things going?" She said. "Pretty badly, Delia," came his reply. "Although we can't spot them, it seems that a lot of pokémon are watching us these days, and we're afraid that some rules might have been broken. We don't know anymore what's behind the wall and -"
"Hum, hum!" He was trailed off by Delia, who pointed at Ash with her head. Aaron got the message, and said, "Sorry, but it doesn't concern you. Besides, I would be in troubles if you decided to eavesdrop on what I'm about to say and repeat it to your friends."
"Okay...," said Ash, before leaving and heading to his bedroom. He didn't like when his uncle didn't want to speak about matters concerning the wall and the reports he received from his chief, but he had no choice.
Ash made sure his mom and uncle would hear a lot of noise as he climbed the stairs, before getting back on his tracks, paying attention that he would be silent in the process. He put his hear against the lock of the door, to get some private news.
"– sure of what you're saying? That seems pretty bad!" Came his mother's voice. Ash had rarely heard such distress in his mom's voice. "Yes, and we're afraid that this may trigger something bigger," said Aaron. "Although we're watching all the doors of the wall, the Government doesn't always tell us everything. I bet they had some meetings with other legendary pokémon than Mewtwo – I guess that's why we've been allowed to go outside to raise some crops – but it seems that we are not trusted. I'm afraid some members of the Government had been corrupted. It's quite tricky. We don't know what some politicians are up to, and I don't want them to trigger another war," explained Ash's uncle.
Pokémon? A war? Mewtwo? What does he speak about? Wondered Ash, tensing to better hear the next information.
"Since history has been distorted ages ago, it's going to be hard to warn the inhabitants," Aaron kept going on. "Yes...that's fair," agreed Delia. "I can't believe that you can sense Aura, and –"
She didn't finish her sentence, Aaron had grabbed the lob of the door and had it wide opened, revealing a surprised Ash besides it. Before the boy could apologize for it, his uncle had grabbed him by the shoulders, and leaning to his size, Aaron spat: "Ash! Whatever you've heard of what we're saying, you shall never speak to this to anybody!"
"Y-yeah...," Ash slowly said.
That was first time he sensed fear in his uncle's voice. And the boy felt that it wouldn't be the last time.
