Chapter 1
I was exhausted. The tests that day were horrifying. Gold insisted that Dr.- was just very, very tired. I thought differently. "He's clearly preparing us."
"Silver, calm down. It's not like he's going to kill us in our sleep." Well, Gold was right about one thing. He needed us. But for what, exactly?
Stop reading.
Dr. - led us to the test room exactly 10 hours later (but who's counting?) and told us that today we would practice fighting. "Don't try to kill each other. Just try to do damage. Remember Gold, you are stronger than Silver."
"Wow, thanks for the compliment." I replied sarcastically.
"If you want to kill Silver… I'll spare you for now, Silver. But only because I know that Gold would not survive without you." Dr. pushed us in. "Concentrate."
Right now.
I concentrated, and a flaming bone appeared in my hand. "Woah." I could feel my soul pulsing. My magic flowing. I had to let it out. So, I summoned a bunch of bones toward Gold. She dodged them easily. I needed more magic. Suddenly, my soul felt like it was being ripped out of my body. I saw Gold's soul coming out of her chest too. The souls appeared to be coming together. Then there was black.
Spare the children.
I looked down at my hands. They looked the same. My scars felt different, though. Oh. You don't know. How do I explain this? My scars look like Dr. 's. Gold's look like Asriel Dreemurr's. My goat horns felt different, too. They felt… more rigid. I touched them, and my hands came away black. Ink. Demon's Ink. Had Gold and I… merged? I had only heard about merging in the old stories, before the war. Back then, there was a competition to see which human-monster pair merged best. The best-looking humans and the best-looking monsters would pair up and merge. It would create beautiful beings. The book even had pictures. One pair was a blond-haired woman and a skeleton. That was my favorite pair. It came in second in the last competition before the war. Sometimes I feel half human. Am I a merge?
Deep.
Who's there?!
Hi! It's Gold. Whoa, Dr.- sure looks surprised.
Yeah. So why did we merge?
I dunno. DNA?
Woah. Deep.
Yeah. Wait, I've got something even deeper. You know how if one of us died, the other would too, no matter what situation?
Yeah?
Well, what if this is our true form? We each are half a soul, and when we battle, we have a full soul. Because we merge.
Makes sense, except for one thing. My soul looks exactly like the ones on the coffins! It is full!
Ok, I give up. Anyway, our merge is just standing here! Let's go-
Take on Dr. - ? Great idea!
No! I refuse!
Too late. I realize why he never harmed us. We're replacements.
What?! No. Who would we replace?
Another two children who have died. You're directly related to one of them.
Nope. We're unique, we're not supposed to be replacing anyone, you're wrong.
Welp. You won't admit it. I guess I'll take control of our merge and say the answer to Dr.- .
"We're replacements for Chara and Asriel Dreemurr, aren't we?" Dr. nodded. He looked… sad. I had never seen Dr.- express any emotion but hate. Hate for us, and us alone. But he had loved the Dreemurrs, the old scrolls said. So why does he hate us?
Whatever happens to the children, you're responsible for it from now on. Go ahead, keep reading. You're too far gone for me to stop you now. Remembe-
I slowly walked out of the lab. The steam from the lava felt fresh on my face. Hotland. It wasn't how I'd expected it to be. Dr. had said that the first time we were to step out, it would be too hot for us to bear. He was wrong. It was so cold in the lab. We nearly froze to death the first time we had stepped out of the tubes. Silver had figured out that each of us had only half the amount of body heat that a monster was supposed to have, so we were always together. Whenever Silver was dragged away for tests, my heart felt like it had frozen over. But now… we could be apart for at least a little while. It felt exhilarating. We came to a water cooler. Shortly before we had left, Dr. had installed a water cooler in the lab. That's how I knew what it was. There were two separate paths-no, wait, three- to different places. Silver looked to me.
"I guess this is where we part ways, huh?"
"We don't have to- "
"No. We need to make our separate lives. Come back here in one week, Gold. Then we'll explore that weird blue place over there. Promise?"
"I - I promise."
But I couldn't shake the feeling… that I wouldn't make it back here in one week. And I couldn't shake the feeling… that that was why Dr. had let us go so easily.
As I walked toward a purple room, my heart started to pound. A black crawly thing crawled up my leg. It bit me. I saw a speck of blood trickle down my knee. It hurt. But I continued, my soul beating faster with each step, though I soon became groggy. Dr. had warned us about spider poison, but surely one little spider couldn't do much harm… riIiggght? … I woke up. I was entangled in some sort of net. Dr. approached me. "I believe you've learned something from this test. You and Silver cannot be apart for too long, or else you both will freeze over. Gold, it is my duty to present you to the king myself. Thus, I cannot have you simply run away like that, my new Asriel." No. it can't… we're unique! We aren't replacements! We can't be! I-I'm not the god of Hyperdeath! I-it isn't true! Tell me it's not true! We- we aren't like that!
"I'm sad to say, you are not nearly as competent as I had expected. So I'm afraid…"
He held up his hands.
"I must try again."
"No!"
I sent bones flying toward Gaster. He quickly let go of Gold's heart. I watched the shredded pieces of her soul flutter toward me. I quickly grabbed ahold of them, as I watched my childhood friend, my sibling, my life, explode into dust. Tears welled up in my eyes. I-I turned toward Gaster. "I'LL KILL YOU FOR WHAT YOU DID!" I quickly charged at him. He held out his hands. Gaster blasters appeared everywhere around me. I formed my own Gaster blasters. And blasted him of the cliff with blue light, screaming. He evaporated quickly. I slowly dropped to the ground as the dust of my sister settled around me. I- it should have been me. I cried for the rest of the night.
