TOTAL DRAMA:
AND THEN THERE WERE NONE
Chapter 2: A Boat Trip to Fate
A well-dressed, freckle-faced woman with a subtle smile approached the red-haired man waiting by a sizable boat. She gave him an only slightly condescending smile.
"Would you happen to know when shall the boat to Wawanakwa Island depart, garçon?" she asked, without losing the smile.
"Gar-what?" the red-haired man replied, surprised.
"Oh, oh! Are you going to Wawanakwa Island too?" Lindsay gasped, excitedly.
"That is correct. My name's Courtney Vásquez. I have been invited by Chris McLean to join the party he's organizing in Wawanakwa Island," Courtney said, with a polite and elevated tone.
"Me too! Oh my gosh, we're gonna have soooo much fun!" Lindsay said.
"Are you coming with us too, garçon?" she asked looking at the red-haired man.
"No. My name is Scott, not 'garçon', and I'm just the boat driver. I have no time for no fancy party," Scott answered bluntly.
"What a pity," Courtney said, slightly amused.
Scott glared at her, but after a couple seconds he realized she was flirting with him.
"Oh! Um, eh... Well, I guess," he said.
"Who else is coming to the party? Is Chris here?" Courtney asked, looking at Lindsay.
"I totally have no clue! Like I guess some other celebrities will come with us, right? Like, I'm a pretty famous model myself..."
"I wouldn't know," Courtney replied, with a fake polite smile drawn on her face. "I'm nothing but a simple lawyer."
Scott looked at her, suddenly realizing something.
"Wait... Ms. Vásquez! I saw you on the news!"
Courtney shrugged, without giving it much importance.
"Maybe due to one of my well-known cases, yes... I have been on TV, that is indeed correct."
"What case?" Lindsay asked, looking a bit clueless.
"The Waters family case," Scott answered, lowering his voice as if he were saying a terrible secret nobody should hear.
"Oh!" Lindsay realized immediately what he was talking about.
"It was a terrible case indeed. So many needless deaths..." Courtney said.
Scott looked at her, frowning. He must have been thinking something really deep, because he didn't say anything for quite a long time. Lindsay, on the other hand, seemed a bit sad.
"I knew Melissa Waters. What a way to go..." she said, a bit more bluntly than probably intended.
Courtney shrugged. She turned back and saw a huge car parking next to them, out of which a tall, slim girl in an elegant dress and a man with dark skin and long hair got out. The girl stared at them with a weird face, and then said something to the guy standing right next to her. The guy put on a pair of sunglasses and walked to them slowly.
"Excuse me," he said with a very soothing voice. "Ms. Yoshida wants to know if you're the party leaving to Wawanakwa Island this afternoon."
Courtney looked at Heather Yoshida with an eyebrow raised. Lindsay seemed a bit taken aback.
"Yup, damn right we are," Scott said. "Well I'm just the boat driver, but still..."
"Understood. Thank you," the guy said, and went back to Heather Yoshida with the same slow walk.
"Who's that harpy-faced brat?" Courtney asked, abruptly.
"It's Heather Yoshida!" Lindsay answered, as if it were an obvious answer. "You don't know her? She's the heir to the Yoshida Family fortune! She's sooooo rich. That sexy guy next to her must be her bodyguard or something... Even I don't have a bodyguard!"
"Heather Yoshida... That's actually a familiar name," Courtney said, reflective.
"Yes, yes, she's all the time on the gossip magazines," Scott said, "but the sexy guy... I mean, JUST the guy must be new! He was in no magazine that I've seen!"
"Oh Scott, I didn't know you liked gossip magazines! I love them, too!" Lindsay said, excitedly.
"I mean! It's not like I read them... My wife! Yes, she is the one that is into all that crap. Exactly, yup, my wife."
"Are you married? You aren't wearing a wedding ring," Courtney pointed out, with a faint smile.
"That... Um... Oh, look! More people are coming!"
Just in time, a group of 6 people appeared walking from the path that went to the train station. It was quite a weird group indeed: a pale, green-haired woman, followed by a small brunette with a ponytail and thick glasses; after them, a dark-skinned woman with a long ponytail and make-up on her face, and a geek with glasses, greasy hair and long legs, and a punk with green hair and an unibrow that looked smugly at the rest of the group. Finally, closing the parade, a tall, overweight blond guy with a happy smile and kind eyes. The group approached them walking slowly as they chatted and commented on trivial topics.
"Hey!" Lindsay exclaimed, excitedly. "Isn't that Leshawna!? The super famous singer!?"
Leshawna winked at her, giving her a proud smile while the geek with glasses seemed to be trying to draw her attention desperately.
"Is this the boat that's gonna take us to Wawanakwa?" Leshawna asked, acting as if she already knew Courtney, Lindsay and Scott.
"Indeed," Courtney replied. "I'm Courtney Vásquez. And you are... Lequisha?"
"No! She's Leshawna!" Lindsay almost shouted, with no attempt to hide her excitement. "Oh my gosh, I love your music!"
"Thanks girlie, I'm happy to hear that," Leshawna said.
The tall, blond guy approached with a huge smile on his also huge face.
"HELLO! I'm Owen Ferguson!" he greeted them, in a friendly manner.
"Hey, Chef Ferguson! I've been to your restaurant many times!" Courtney said, surprised to see him there. "McLean didn't lie when he said some guests would be quite distinguished..."
"So happy to see you all! We're gonna have a great time, guys!" Owen said.
"So, hey!" the brunette said suddenly, getting closer to them. "It's me, Beth!"
Courtney and Lindsay looked at her blankly.
"Are we supposed to know you?" Courtney asked, bluntly.
"Um... I'm kinda of a big deal," Beth tried to boast, with no success.
"Sorry, nothing comes to mind," Lindsay said, with a polite smile in her beautiful face.
"I'm the author of The Sixth Murder!" Beth exclaimed, a bit annoyed.
"Yeah, yeah... We know, Beth, we know. I'm Gwen," she said, looking at Courtney and Lindsay. "Don't worry," she said, suddenly, looking at the not-too-disguised disgust painted on Courtney's face, "I'm not a guest. I'm just the bartender."
"Phew," Courtney said, making Gwen smile.
"Oh, and I'm Harold," the geek said. "I'm the author of the quantum theory of mass creation."
"Of what?" the punk said trying to hold his laughter.
"And who are you?" Courtney asked, staring at the green-haired punk.
"Name's Rodney. I'm an artist."
"Ah..." Courtney said, making no effort to feign interest in what he was telling her.
"Rodney, what a funny name!" Lindsay said. "It doesn't suit you at all, with that rough attitude you have, tee-hee!"
"Yeah, you could say that..." Rodney answered.
"So... This is it? It's all of us?" Gwen asked, raising an eyebrow.
"That brat is also coming with us, according to her bodyguard," Courtney said, pointing at Heather Yoshida.
"Oh my gosh, that's Heather Yoshida!" Beth gasped, lowering her voice. "She's an even bigger deal than me..."
"That's not as difficult as you imagine," Rodney said, smiling.
"Thanks!" Beth answered, not understanding the insult.
Scott looked at all of them, trying not to look too condescending: it was a weird group indeed. What was McLean thinking? He, the man that had parties with George Looney, Mia Pharlow, Antonio Bandejas... And there they were: a lawyer from some loved-by-the-tabloids case, a weird writer, a rich brat with a bodyguard included, a geek scientist and some painter with an oddly-unsuited name. The chef, the top-model and the singer seemed like the only ones that would actually fit with McLean's usual guests.
"So... If that's all of you..." Scott said, pointing towards the small boat behind him.
"Someone should tell Heather that it is time to leave, no?" Beth said, looking at her with a creepy smile.
"Yeah... Now that you bring it up, go tell her yourself," Rodney said.
Beth looked at him as if asking "can I?", and then started running towards Heather like she was on fire. Gwen rolled her eyes and looked at Courtney with an exasperated smile.
"This is gonna be a long trip," she said.
Courtney raised a condescending eyebrow.
"Aren't you the service? Don't talk to me," she told her, bluntly.
"Oh wow," Gwen said, with a surprised smile in her face.
"Ok, guys, let's go," Scott said, seeing that Heather was approaching them followed by Beth.
The ten of them got on the boat with some difficulty, as it was not big enough and didn't have a lot of room to breathe.
"Thank God we are all healthy," Owen said with a silly voice. "Being so close to each other..."
Scott undocked the boat with a quick movement, and it began to move out to sea. Beth gasped loudly, which scared some of them thinking that she was falling off the boat.
"It's my first time in a boat!" Beth almost shouted, clinging to Owen tightly.
"Don't worry, it's not as scary as it seems at the beginning," Owen said happily.
The boat began to move faster and faster and the Devon harbor began to look smaller and smaller as they moved further out into the ocean. Lindsay was laughing excitedly, Courtney looked bored and Rodney was playing with his nails absentmindedly.
"So it's the first time that y'all are going to a McLean's party?" Leshawna asked.
All of them nodded at the same time. Leshawna smiled.
"I've been to one before, I know the guy!" she said. "He's nice and all, but seems a bit fake. Anyways, it's the first time I'm going to one at Wawanakwa Island. I've heard they're quite the parties."
"How is he? I'm a bit nervous," Beth said, laughing anxiously.
"Don't worry, girl, he's pretty chill! You'll enjoy your time there, I'm pretty sure," Leshawna said, calming Beth down.
"Ugh... I hate the sea," Heather said suddenly, being the first time she opened her mouth since she joined the group.
A huge silence was created after Heather's words, which made Gwen feel a bit uncomfortable.
"Um... Well, out of all the things one can hate, that's one I can understand," she said, thinking very hard about how to make conversation with Heather with such a short intervention. "It's... huh... deep, and scary."
Heather nodded, but didn't say anything else. Her bodyguard snickered to himself.
"So, are you the bodyguard?" Courtney asked, indiscreetly.
The guy shook his head, acting a bit offended.
"I'm Ms. Yoshida's personal assistant in this trip. I wouldn't call myself her bodyguard, although I have to make sure she's safe and sound all the time."
"Wow. You must be rich as hell," Rodney said, looking at Heather.
Heather shrugged, and looked into the sea.
"How long is the trip to the island?" she asked, looking at Scott.
"Around 25 minutes, the island is quite far out to sea," he replied. "Sometimes, when there are big storms in the area, they are completely cut off till the storm passes."
"That must be quite scary..." Harold said.
"I guess, but that doesn't stop Mr. McLean from organizing even more parties," Scott said. "He spends a lot of time on that island, although not as much now as he used to in the past."
"The guy's getting older," Leshawna laughed.
"Noah! You think it'll be too long till the guests come?" Sierra asked, with a happy voice.
Noah, who was cleaning a gigantic clock that was standing in front of the entrance door, sighed loudly.
"Sierra... Have you finished preparing the ingredients for tonight's dinner? Mr. McLean left very clear instructions."
"Yeah, yeah... I'm sorry! It's been a long time since we've organized a party here..." Sierra said. "It makes the island a bit less scary."
"I guess," Noah said, still cleaning the clock.
Sierra looked out the window, with a cheerful smile and playing with her hair.
"I love guests... And this weekend's are brand new! We've never met them!"
"That is correct, nevertheless..." Noah stared, but Sierra interrupted him.
"AH! I haven't finished chopping wood for the living room's chimney!"
Sierra ran out of the entrance hall, and Noah was relieved to be left alone again.
20 minutes had passed, and the boat was getting closer to the island. It could already be seen, making the excitement grow even more between the people on the boat.
"Ah! I'm so excited!" Harold said. "It's been such a long time since I've been to a party..."
"I wonder why," Rodney said, with a smug smile.
"Rodney," Harold said, staring at him. "Can I call you Rodney or you have a surname?"
"I'm Rodney O'Halloran," Rodney answered.
"O'Halloran. What an Irish surname for someone that looks so un-Irish," Harold pointed out.
"It seems like neither my name nor my surname suit me at all," Rodney said, looking at Lindsay. "What a pity."
"Heheh, I like your name, Rodney," Owen said in his happy voice. "I do think it suits you."
Rodney shrugged.
"Anyway, we're close to meeting the McLean guy himself," he said. "I hope you are all ready."
"Do you happen to know him?" Courtney asked.
"No, but I've heard so many things... It's gonna be quite an interesting weekend. You should all be careful."
"C-Careful?" Lindsay repeated.
"Why are you saying that?" Gwen asked, looking annoyed. "Don't ruin the mood."
"Yeah, yeah, listen to me and you'll thank me later," Rodney said.
Gwen rolled her eyes.
"Anyway, I'm just the bartender," she muttered, annoyed by the guy.
"Ignore him," Courtney told her. "He's just trying to look interesting, but he's just a jerk."
"I agree," Harold said.
"Ah, already making friends. This is exciting!" Rodney said, smiling.
"Wawanakwa Island!" Scott exclaimed, as the island was getting closer.
Before them loomed a huge island filled with lush vegetation and a luxurious-looking mansion on top. The sea was calm and the boat was moving quickly towards the tiny dock on the island, in which a tall woman was waiting waving at them.
"Is that Chris McLean?" Beth asked, with the excitement taking over her voice.
"Of course not, that's a woman!" Leshawna said.
"Must be someone from the service..." Owen added.
The boat was getting closer and closer, and after a few seconds they could see the tall, purple-haired woman perfectly. She was wearing a black dress and an apron, and a headband kept her long purple hair from getting into her face.
"Heyyy, Scott!" she said happily. "Welcoooome!"
"Hello, Sierra..." Scott said, looking already annoyed.
The boat docked smoothly and the guests started to get off it with a bit of difficulty.
"Welcome to Wawanakwa Island!" Sierra greeted them, helping Beth to get off the boat. "It's lovely to have you all here with us for this weekend!"
"Thanks..." Beth said, her legs shaking. "I've... I've decided I don't like boats. I hope I don't have to get on one again."
"How do you expect to come back, genius?" Rodney said, smugly.
Beth opened her mouth in a perfect "o".
"I hadn't thought of that..."
"This island is lovely!" Lindsay exclaimed, happily. "It looks so fancy..."
"It's a bit chilly," Courtney said. "I sure hope the house has heating of some sort."
"Of course!" Sierra answered. "I'll make sure all of you feel the most comfortable during your stay at Wawanakwa Island."
"I'd like to see that," Courtney said back.
Sierra smiled, taking it as a compliment and not an insult. The last one to get off the boat was Gwen, who looked green in both her hair and her face.
"That was a rocky boat trip," she said.
"Ah! Are you the bartender?" Sierra asked. "Mr. McLean mentioned a green-haired woman in his instructions."
"Ah, yes! Chris hired me to..."
"Um... If you don't mind, here the service calls him 'Mr. McLean'," Sierra said, suddenly turning her smily face into a straight dead-stare.
"Ah... Ah, sorry. Didn't know..."
"It's okay, you'll learn. Noah will give you all the information you need later, please wait here while I take the guests to the house."
"'Course..." Gwen said.
Sierra took all the guests up the stone stairs that lead to the top of the island, where the mansion stood imposingly.
"What a house," Gwen said to Scott.
"Yup. Well, I gotta back to the harbor," Scott said, getting back on the boat.
"So... We'll see you on Monday morning?" Gwen asked.
"Yes. The weather seems like it's gonna be calm for the full weekend, but you never know around here, so if you guys think you're gonna have it tough to come back to shore make sure to call me asap, ok?" Scott warned her.
"Ah... Yes, of course. But it shouldn't be a problem, no? I don't think we'll be stranded here for weeks, no?"
Scott shrugged his shoulders.
"You never know around here, missy. The things I've seen..."
Scott undocked the boat and waved at her. Gwen stood there, looking back at the house.
"So... Here we are. Wawanakwa Island," she said, a bit anxious.
The wind was starting to blow harder, and Gwen suddenly had a feeling in her insides that was incredibly hard to explain.

AUTHOR'S NOTES!
Heeello! We're here with episode 2. This is very exciting, hehehe.
We now have everybody on the island, excited to meet the famous host, Chris McLean. The lovely weekend of the party in Wawanakwa Island begins now. What will happen next? ;)
So I'm very happy to have received some reviews already. I've loved to read all of them and I'd like to address one thing, aimed exclusively to my Spanish readers: no, this season doesn't imply that I'll stop writing anything other than this. Total Drama: Legends of the Island is being written right now and will be published soon. This is just a fun experiment that I'm writing with shorter episodes and a different structure.
As of how similar this will be to And Then There Were None: well, the premise is the same. There will be a lot of references and easter eggs for those that have read the original story. But that's it, this is not a rewrite with TD characters, it's an original story with a different mystery and solution. I'll love to read all the theories you guys'll have when things start to happen.
I encourage you to keep leaving reviews, I'd love to know your opinions on the dynamics of the characters and how the story is developping.
Read you soon in episode 3! See you! :)
