A Perfect Storm in Hereford
…Six months on…..
1600 – Hereford, UK
"Here comes daddy….." Georgie said glancing back from the front window to baby Daniel. He was sat upright on his play mat rambunctiously slapping his hands on the little plastic flippers of a toy. She knew Elvis would melt when he saw him. In a beat the front door opened, delivering a jet of cold winter air along with her husband's entrance. Georgie met him in the hallway. "Bet you're glad you wore your hat." She said watching Elvis drag it from his head.
"Yeah." Elvis said shrugging out of his jacket, leaning down to greet her offered kiss. "Hi."
"Hi. You were a little longer then expected." she said rubbing her upper arms as the cold dissipated from the hallway.
"Uh, yeah, I thought I'd clear out some emails so I would not drown on Monday. How's things?" he said sitting on the bench of the oak hall tree, untying his wet boots.
"We're good. Ya fancy a brew?"
"Definitely."
Georgie smiled as he stood. He smiled in return and looked past her, catching sight of his baby boy. "Georgie! He's sittin up…." Elvis exclaimed walking into the room, fascinated by the new development.
"Yes! He is so clever!"
Elvis looked at her and drew his lower lip in between his teeth. "He's gettin big ain't he?"
"Reckon he'll be on the Beacons in no time at all." she said splaying her hair back happily.
Elvis got onto his knees. "Well look at you little mate….." Daniel grinned a gaping toothless smile and lifted his arms up. Elvis dramatically groaned, picking him up. "Such a big boy. Did ya miss me? Huh?" Elvis' daddy voice amused Georgie and she loved hearing it. "I should be home with ya on Saturday." Elvis sat in the over-stuffed chair holding Daniel upright on his lap. The little legs seemed to march in place and the baby began to laugh as Elvis' thighs started to bounce.
"These Saturday obligations on base aren't going to be a regular occurrence are they?" Georgie asked carrying two mugs of tea and a plate of something into the lounge.
"Nah. It's just because we got put back a day. Wha' ya got there?" Elvis asked stretching his neck to eye the contents of the plate.
"A little something special for ya." She said teasing him with her surprise.
"You didn't?" Elvis responded, his eyes twinkling with anticipation.
"Looks like I did, yeah." She said placing the powdered sugar covered cannoli next to him on the side table.
"Look wha' mummy made…." Elvis said. Daniel watched him bite into a pastry and the six month old's little mouth opened and closed. Elvis noticed. "You want a taste? Huh? Yeah?" he took a finger and coated the tip with creamy filling. Daniel leaned in as the sweet offering met his tiny mouth. Elvis grinned as his son took in the filling and the baby's lips puckered for more. "Mmmmmmm, yummy eh?"
"Elvis!" Georgie cautioned.
"Wha?"
"Not too much then. That's loads of sugar."
"Tsk, he fancies it…"
"I'm not gonna be fancying you when he's bouncin off the walls."
"Did you hear mummy? No more mascarponeeeh for ya pal."
Georgie giggled behind her mug watching Elvis let Daniel have another small taste despite his words to the contrary. "Did ya give Laura cannoli filling?"
Elvis' eyes slid to her. "No one made me cannoli back then."
"Awww…poor baby."
"I was in London if ya recall."
"Yes. You were in London…No care packages from Hoddeston?"
"Nah….I had to show up for the good stuff." Elvis lamented.
"Nonna knew what she was about." Georgie said sipping her tea with delight.
"Exactly. And…she taught you well." He said crunching down on his favorite pastry. His compliment meant a lot to her. Georgie never thought she would please anyone's palate, least of all Elvis' when it came to Italian cuisine. He winked at her and finished off the last bite. Daniel eyed him and pouted. "Sorry little mate, mummy said you get peas." The baby's lower lip began to quiver and Elvis braced himself for the inevitable – a high pitched wail followed by tears.
"High marks boss. Now you've gone and done it." Georgie said crossing her legs and agitating one leg up and down, amused as to how Elvis would handle this.
"Shhhh. It's good." Elvis said standing and taking Daniel with him. "Daddy likes peas…peas are good." The wails continued. Elvis remained oblivious and set Daniel down on the play mat. "Wha's this 'ere? Huh?" Elvis said lying onto his front. Georgie leaned in, resting her forearms on her thighs, watching the father and son interaction. For the moment, Daniel was interested in displaying his dismay at being denied further mascarpone. Elvis ran a little plastic car along the mat, making engine and screeching wheel noises. Eventually father's playtime won out.
Georgie grinned. "Awwww." Elvis drove the toy car closer and closer to Daniel, making the engine sound louder until the baby reached for the toy. "Good on you daddy." she said.
"Yeah. He reckons it's a Lamborghini." Elvis said rolling onto his side with cheeky self-satisfaction.
"You are unreal." She said leaning in further over her husband and tousling a fringe of his hair into his eyes. Daniel laughed at that.
"Ahh, ya fancied 'at did ya?" Elvis said pushing the hair back. Daniel laughed at that as well and pushed the toy car towards his father.
"Looks like it needs a re-fuel." Georgie quipped. Both parents laughed. She thought it was a perfect Saturday now that Elvis was home with them.

Georgie felt chilled and cuddled closer to Elvis. He tucked her in to his embrace, their bodies spent from their love-making. He enveloped them in the covers, resting an arm around her middle. It was her little slice of heaven when he held her like this. His other arm beneath her pillow. Her body secure against him. She could weather any storm when he held her like this. That burning love, sat deep in her heart, that contentment and trust.
