Chapter - 47

Walking inside the McGarrett home, he still had Joan in his arms whom had fallen asleep on the car ride back home, and Mary giggled as she saw her sleeping daughter in her brother's arms, hoping one day soon that picture of Uncle and Niece together would be replaced by father and daughter or father and son.. "What did you do to tire her out?", was the first thing she said when she walked towards her brother.. He smirked, should have known that they would all think he had done something extreme to tire her out..

"I promise.. I did nothing strenuous at all.. though.. wait till you see what one of her Christmas presents is going to be", he chuckled in a knowing way.. She had been waiting to go on a helicopter tour and a picnic of one of the smaller islands for a long time, and so Steve had gotten tickets for Mary, Joan, Catherine and himself to go up in Kamaekona's helicopter for New Years day..

Mary just shook her head and smirked, "Ohh boy… can't wait for that". He laughed softly, trying not to move too much avoid waking his niece.. "Should I wake her?", he asked his sister curiously.. They weren't having a super early lunch, it was kind of like a late lunch, early dinner type of event.. "Maybe go lay her down for a while in my old bedroom, I'll wake her up when the other younger kids get here". She knew that Joan was having some trouble sleeping of a night, and she had not so good night the night before.. For a small child, she could sense the sadness in both her Momma and her Uncle, and while Mary and Steve both tried to be upbeat and happy around her, there were going to be times when being sad around her was unavoidable, days like today for instance..

He nodded and leaned in, letting Mary kiss her daughter's temple and then he quickly gave his sister a kiss on the cheek as well and headed upstairs to lay Joan down in the room that Mary had always called hers as a child.. He put a crochet blanket his mother made for Mary as a child over her and made sure she was comfortable before heading out of the room..

The upstairs was bigger then it looked, it held three bedrooms and bathroom, though over the time he had been living there, he had thought to put in an ensuite in the master bedroom.. The bedroom his parents and then his Dad used to sleep in.. He never thought he would be comfortable with that, and when he first came back to the island, he slept in the room he used to sleep in as a child.. He wasn't sure when it happened exactly, but somewhere along the lines he began sleeping in the room his parents used, he thinks it was around the time that Catherine began spending a lot of time there, and he figured a bigger room was needed for them both.

Walking downstairs, he smiled softly.. He could smell her perfume long before he could see her, and that scent just always managed to calm him when he was feeling anxious.. Heading into the kitchen, he could see Catherine was doing some last minute prep, though Princess was doing the majority of the cooking for this thanksgiving lunch, Catherine still insisted on doing a few little recipes as well.. Wrapping his arms around her waist, and putting his chin on her shoulder, he breathed her in, closing his eyes for a moment.

She could sense he needed to just feel her in his arms, and she stayed still and quiet, leaning back into him, feeling him bury his head into the crook of her neck.. He had been through so much in his life, losing so many people that were close to him, and the reality of it it sunk in that he was holding her now like he never wanted to let her go.. "I'm here Steve, and I'm not going anywhere", she whispered softly to him she felt his lips press against her neck.

Murmuring softly, she could hear his words, "I know.. and you are why I'm not falling apart more then I am.. You keep me grounded and keep me sane". She put down the knife she had in her hand to cut the veggies and turned in his arms, wrapping her arms around his shoulder, and leaning her forehead on his, "We keep each other sane.. you are my rock Steve, you always have been and I intend to be your rock.. I told you when Joe died, I'm in this till the end.. and I meant it.. and still mean it.. there is no place else I'd rather be".

His heart ached for all the losses he had suffered in his life.. It all began with his mother faking her death when he was fifteen and then from then on, it was like the domino's kept falling.. Slowly one by one, they fell..till it all came back full circle and here he was not as a teen, but a fully grown adult with his own thoughts and feelings and opinions dealing with the knowledge of his mother's death again, though this time, baring witness to it made him realise it was for real this time..

"You being here with me..I mean it Cath.. You are my salvation".. His hands had moved to brush the hair from her eyes and he smiled, though he was still feeling heavy with emotion from the morning he had, he felt grateful as well.. Danny always said he was his best version of himself when Catherine was around and today he couldn't help but see exactly what he had meant all those years.

Leaning in, she kissed his lips softly, and gazed into his eyes, "As you are mine Sailor". He was dressed a little more formally in his dress blues, something that Joan had asked for.. She loved seeing her Uncle in his uniform and of course her Uncle couldn't say no to her, "Everyone else should be here soon, they were all going to shower and change, how about we head up stairs and get you into something a little more comfortable".

Smirking, he chuckled a little… He knew that was really code for something else, and right now.. He was still feeling that heaviness and sadness of the day so unwinding with Catherine before his Ohana got here, it was a good sure way to get him feeling relaxed.. "Is that an order or a suggestion?", he couldn't help but ask her and when she chuckled back a soft, "That is an order Commander McGarrett", he leaned in, kissing her softly on the lips, answering her back with a simple, "Yes ma'am".

Upon heading up stairs together, both holding hands, Mary smiled and shook her hands, taking over where Catherine left off with the veggies, "Keep it quiet up there, my daughter is asleep up there after all", she smirked, hearing Steve and Catherine both groan in embarrassment knowing exactly what Mary was referring to, "You sure you can be quiet Lieutenant?", he whispered as they headed upstairs, "Ohh I can be.. however.. you might be another story", answering back in an equally whispered voice, closing the bedroom door and locking it before pushing him against the door, already unbuttoning his blazer, the heat and passion evident in her eyes.
