Different People

A/N: So this is my first fic for the Twister genre. Now I noticed that at least two different authors tried writing some fics in this genre aboutwhat if Bill & Jo had children. One was with twins and one was with an only daughter. Both of them more or less came out the same way, with the same outcome.
So I decided to write up the same type of fic the right way and in my own way basically. They will have twins in my fic. So yes it takes place during the events of Twister but there will be some changes made. For one realistically tornado outbreaks usually happen over a span of a few days and not over the span of one day.
So I'm gonna make the events take place over the span of a few days which would be a bit more realistic. I am so fascinated by tornadoes always have been always will be thanks in part to twister. I've studied about them know everything so I'll make sure to use the right terms and what not to the best of my abilities.
Anyway the other change will be that since Twister happened in the 90s, there will be some 90s references made to music and tv but also in regards to how the twins dress. Also since Twister happened in the 90s that was before the enhanced fujita scale came into existence.
The enhanced fujita scale came to exist in 2007. So for example an EF5 will be called an F5 because in the 90s it was just the fujita scale. Anyway last but not least, the title of this fic is based on the song Different People by No Doubt. The song just seemed very fitting to the title. Also I do not own the song Different People by No Doubt and I do not own Twister or any tv show, band or song that is referenced in this fic. Sorry for the long author's note and I hope you'll all enjoy this fic. I'll definitely try to make you proud also please pardon the fact that in regards to looks I really suck at explanations. I will try. Also this fic is gonna start in Jo's perspective since the movie start's in Bill's.
Also last but not least I didn't want to do stereotypical twin names and also I couldn't think of any other names. So basically that's how I came up with the twin's names. Cause I couldn't think of anything. Anyway enjoy and if you hate it don't read. Please be kind and I hope you'll like it.
Jo Harding had been separated from her ex husband Bill Harding for awhile now, though their divorce was never truly official. Jo had hesitated in signing the papers. Mostly because she still harbored some feelings for Bill. Though she just pushed those feelings out of the way knowing that things between them would never work out. The fights between them were always so explosive. Bill had ended up leaving their storm chasing team that Jo now took the lead of. He had pulled out of studying tornadoes along side the woman he had once called his wife. Jo argued that Bill didn't understand just how passionate she was about studying tornadoes in a bid to save peoples lives.
Bill had argued that Jo's passion only came from being broken about losing her father as a child and it was more of an obsession then it was a passion.
The two who had once seemed like such soul mates had inevitably drifted apart and were now completely different people. However the other reason Jo had hesitated on signing the papers was because Jo and Bill had two twin daughters. Their daughters were named Jade and Kelly. Jo hadn't wanted to hurt her daughters and drag them through a huge custody battle. Then again she wondered if they it really would bother her daughters? Kelly and Jade were supposed to be identical twins but they were extreme opposites. They also hated each other.
Jade and Kelly were both sixteen years old and Kelly was more on the girly side and definitely didn't share the same passion as her mother and her sister. Kelly didn't always get along with her mother Jo and infact it had gotten worse since her parents separated. While Jade had
just as much drive and passion as her mother. Jade was more of a tomboy and had actually been hurt by the separation. She could only blameher father Bill for what had happened. However despite this Jade would still visit her father in Oklahoma City at least once a month. Kellyrefused to go to Wakita to visit her mother, sister and great aunt.
Infact one time Kelly had avoided seeing them at least two months. Bill would usually have to force Kelly to go, but that time she refused to budge no matter how hard her father would push her to.
So once a month Jo would just meet Kelly for lunch or dinner. Jade would either visit her father during that time or choose to stay home with her great aunt named Meg. Jade and Kelly absolutely hated each other. Whenever Jade would visit her father Bill, Kelly would usually
ignore her the whole time or go out with friends. Jade was perfectly fine with this, she couldn't stand her sister either. However Jade and Kellyhad never gotten along and probably never would. Ever since they were little they couldn't stand each other.
The separation between their parents had only made the rift even worse. They truly weren't twins in that regard. Despite being identical they were definitely extreme opposites.
Jade had short neck length hair which was blonde but had purple streaks throughout it. She had beautiful green eyes which was the reason her mother had given her the name Jade. Jade was more into grunge look of the 90s. She was wearing a black Bart Simpson tank top with an open
long sleeved flannel top over it, with ripped jeans and black boots. Which is what she was wearing when she walked into the kitchen and grabbed a cup of coffee and some breakfast.
Jade and her mother Jo lived with their aunt Meg in Wakita. Before the separation it was Jo, Bill and the twins living in a small house in Wakita. After the separation Meg had offered to take Jo and Jade in and also take the burden off of Jo since making payment for the bills was a bit hard for them. Jo tried to keep the house but it didn't seem to work out. She felt bad that they had to live with Meg. However Meg didn't care. She was happy to have Jo and Jade live with her. Jo would however make an effort to help Meg out with someof the bills and also when it wasn't tornado season took odd jobs and what not. So now Jo found herself sitting at the kitchen table watching tv and Meg sat down with a cup.
Jade joined both of them at the table shortly after. "Jo, honey are you okay?" Meg asked her niece. Jo whowas deep in thought snapped out of it and looked at both Meg and Jade. "Yeah, why do you ask?" Jo said as she took a sip of her coffee. "Well, you haven't touched your breakfast yet." Meg pointed out while Jade took a sip of her coffee and nodded. "Yeah what gives mom, are you nervous?" Jade asked with a smirk. Jo gave her daughter a slight look. "No I am not nervous, I was actually watching the news and weather reports." Jo said
pointing to the tv as she spoke. "It looks like they're predicting a possible outbreak within the next few days." Jo went onto explain.
Jade may not have been all that close with Kelly or Bill. However Jade was close with Jo and Meg. She was also close with the rest of the storm chasing crew. They would look after her like she was the little sister. Though Jade had proven long ago to them that she could take care of herself. Still she was glad to have them as friends in her life as well. People who had her back. Jade had a group offriends she hung out with from school. They were good friends and she had grown up with some of them. However the storm chasing crew were her closest friends if she was being honest.
"Well they've been talking about storm potential for days. I think you really are nervous to see Bill again." Jade pointed with a slight laugh. Ever since the separation Jade had started calling her father by his first name and Jo hadn't discouraged it. She understood if anything why she did it. Jo sighed. "Well lets not thinking about that right we have to go meet up with everyone." Jo said as she stood up. "Jo at least take bagel." Meg said and with a sigh Jo took one despite her stomach being in knots.
Jo was nervous. Bill had called her and asked to meet up with her so they could get their divorce and things finalized. That was the last thing Jo wanted but she figured that maybe now it was time to rip off the bandaid and let the wounds heal. So she had agreed to meet up with Bill in the middle of field which was where the crew usually met up or got set up at.
It was somewhere a few miles outside of Wakita. There was a farm right next to the field and the farmer who owned the land had come to know the storm chasers and even offered to let them use his farm to house some of their equipment if they needed to. Jo put her coat on with and hugged Meg as she took the bagel. "Thanks Meg." Meg was like a second mother to Jo, since Jo's own mother had more or less abandoned her after theyhad lost Jo's father. Jo's mother had grown depressed and distant neglecting her daughter. Til one day her mother had taken her own life. It was only a few months after the loss of her father that Jo's mother had taken her own life. So Jo more or less grew up with her Aunt Meg,being a mother to her and caring for her. Jo vowed that when she had children, she would never abandon her children like that. No matterwhat happened in her life. Jo couldn't bare to subject her children to that kind of life.
"No problem, be safe okay?" Meg said as Jo nodded. "Don't forget to get to the basement if something comes towards Wakita." Jo reminded Meg like she did everyday during Tornado season.
Jade who had finished her coffee and put her cup and plate away while Jo and Meg were talking, walked out grabbing her keys. "Want to ride with me today mom?" Jade asked her mother who shook her head. "No I think its best if we take separate vehicles so you can carry
one of the Dorothys if we need it." Jo said as she picked up her own keys. Jade nodded. "Sure, where we meeting everyone? The Storm Shack or the field?" Jade asked. Some of the storm chasing group lived in Wakita. Haynes, Sanders, Dusty, Rabbit & Beltzer were roomies in a house in Wakita that everyone had dubbed The Storm Shack. Dusty & Beltzer shared a room while Rabbit and Sanders had their own room.
Even though they had all purchased the house together. Despite her objections, the others offered the master bedroom to Haynes. Haynes had several arguments with all of them until finally they convinced her to just take the bedroom. Haynes always wanted to be considerate and fair towards everyone especially her friends. Laurence & Joey lived in the same apartment complex and Preacher had his own small house. Jo was grateful that her friends had all lived,
so close by although she hadn't encouraged it but it just kind of happened. At first they were all scattered in where they lived.
Dusty, Beltzer and Haynes were the only lives who had grown up in Wakita with Jo. They ended up going to same college where they met everyone else and where Jo had met Bill.
After college they slowly ended up in Wakita one by one. In the opinion of Jo, Jade and especially Meg. They were all basically like family. "We're meeting at the storm shack first." Jo told Jade who followed her mother outside. "Cool." Jade said as she walked over to her Ford Bronco. Before that Jade had been sharing a truck with Jo, she didn't mind it. However the last time Jade had visited Bill in Oklahoma City, a few weeks ago. He was taking her to get himself a brand new truck but he had also offered to get Jade her own vehicle. Jade had declined. Though he insisted because the twins's birthday had come and pass. He felt guilty for not being there for her birthday.
Still Jade insisted it was fine she was just glad she finally had her driver's license. Though he kept insisting as they drove around and that's when Jade had spotted the Ford Bronco. It was awesome, she fell in love with it instantly. So her and her father had gotten a new vehicle together. "I love this thing." Jade said with a smile towards Jo who shook her head. "He really didn't have to do that honestly." Jo said rolling her eyes, she had been slightly annoyed by the gift since she hadn't been able to afford togive the twins much for their birthdays. Though Jo knew the bronco made Jade happy, so she tried her best not to make her feel guilty about it. WhileJade on the other hand had come to the conclusion that maybe it was for the best. She could at least take some advantage of her father's short comings.
Besides Kelly literally had Bill wrapped her little finger. That irritated Jade to no end.
Jade closed the door to her bronco and started it up, turning the radio to the rock station. The sounds of Nirvana playing on the radio, as she followed her mother to the storm shack. Jade didn't nessacarily care about her father visiting them that day, she just really hoped that Kelly stayed home. Infact, she was pretty sure that Kelly would stay behind. That was just a given. However Jade was not excited to meet Bill's new whatever she was. Bill hadtold Jade he was bringing his new girlfriend when Jade answered the phone. That was when she had called for Jo and passed the phone to her. There were truly no wonders that could express this. It would most likely end up being extremely interesting however.
Jade pulled up to the storm shack right behind her mother. Preacher, Laurence and Joey were already there. Jade turned off the vehicle and got out and looked out towards the sky, the clouds were slowly moving in and building. Jade was glad that she was already on summer break and even more grateful that tornado season was in the middle of summer break. If tornado season hadn't happened during summer break, Jade would feel devastated by that. When they got out of their vehicles everyone greeted them. They too were observing the sky and chatting out on the front porch of the house with its slight peeling paint.
It was painted a deep dark blue grey to look like storm clouds and on one side of the house it was painted to look like a lighting storm. On the other side of the house it had come to a vote one part of the group thought maybe make it look like a lightning storm too. The other side wanted a tornado painted on the other side because Beltzer convinced everyone how cool it would be if it matched his van. Though the other side though its was dumb to match
his van so there was a compromise. They painted lightning around and within the funnel. Everyone was happy either way. "Do not tell them about Bill meeting up with us." Jo whispered under her breath to Jade as they walked up to the porch. "Well if you insist, but they're gonna know either way."Jade whispered in response to her mother.
"Jade! What's up lady bro?" Dusty said as he gave Jade a high five. "Nothing much." Jade replied as Dusty smiled. "Still enjoying your sweet new ride?" He asked. "You know it." Jade said with a smile.
Haynes sighed slightly. "Yeah so unfortunately for me when I was filling the van up with gas today guess who I saw at the gas station? Jade's crush." Haynes said as she poked fun at Jade slightly who blushed a deep shade of red and didn't seem amused by the joke. "Okay A. why do you have to bring that up every time? B. I was like twelve or thirteen when I had a crush on Jonas, now I think he's a fucking douchebag! For the record at that age I also liked New Kids On The Block which I now regret! C. What the fuck is he doing in Wakita? He doesn't even live here!" Jaded yelled out slightly and also frowned at the memory of her awkward twelve and
thirteen year old self. So mixed up then. Beltzer shrugged. "Who who knows? He's probably trying to gloat. You know he has a poor pathetic excuse of a rip of our Dorothy right?" Beltzer asked while Jo cringed slightly. "Ugh don't remind me."
So after making jokes about Jonas and teasing poor Jade about her crush until she finally threatened each of them and then walked off. They all started making plans for the day and how things were going to play out. Then they packed up their vehicles with equipment and headed out to the field to wait for the storms to roll in. It was only morning so they had a lil while to relax and prepare for awhile.
Later that afternoon after Bill, Melissa and much to her dismay Kelly were headed to meet up with Jo and everyone. "Um, honey are you sure she's gonna be there?" Melissa asked looking at Bill who shook his head slightly and responded. "If I know Jo, she's already dragged
her entire department including Jade into the field. A day like today, its to be expected. She forgets everything except her work." Bill explained. At the mention of her annoying twin sister Jade that's when Kelly tuned out the whole conversation between her father and Melissa. Kelly grumbled. Jo and Jade and everyone else were not the people that Kelly wanted to see. Kelly had made plans to hang out, to go to the mall.
Unfortunately her father had threatened to take away Kelly's car and every single privilege he could think of just to force Kelly to go. When Bill bought Jade what Kelly had deemed
a ridiculously ugly vehicle. Apparently Bill wanted to include Kelly in that as well. Kelly of course went with the best option a red convertible car. Jade of course had laughed in Kelly's face and mocked Kelly for owning a convertible in flat Oklahoma. "This isn't Beverly Hills 90210 and you're not Kelly Taylor. You're Kelly Harding. This is Oklahoma! What's the point of a convertible?" Jade snapped at Kelly as the two bickered on and on about their vehicles.
"I know that, but I wanted to pick something cool that I enjoy!" Kelly snapped back. The two had argued until they had gone back to Bill's place then went their separate ways. As the memory faded, Kelly frowned slightly. Her sister was an annoying pest. Kelly unlike her sister was a girly girl. She was also captain of the cheer squad at her high school. Infact in a few weeks she was set to go to cheer camp and get away from her ridiculous family. The only one in her family Kelly was actually close with was her father Bill. As far as Jo was concerned, Kelly had stopped calling her mom or mother when the separation happened.
Kelly only referred to her mother by her first name. Bill tried discouraging it but it didn't work out so well. Kelly was wearing a cute baby doll dress with cute black boots and of course she had one of the most popular hairstyles of the 90s. She had gotten her hair cut to be the same style as Rachel from friends which was one of the most popular looks at that time. Except Kelly was blonde like her sister with the same green eyes. Kelly unlike her sister and her mother was definitely a girly girl. She had no interested in those stupid thunderstormsor whatever it was that they did. When they finally found Jo, Jade and the rest of the crew and pulled up. Kelly sat in the backseat with her arms crossed.
Melissa got out of the truck and Bill looked back at Kelly. "Kelly get out of the truck, we talked about this and what you could lose." Bill said in a harsh tone with her. "I don't give a FUCK! I hate these people and I hate you for making me come here!" Kelly snapped slightly which caused Bill to sigh slightly. He had done his best raising Kelly. It hadn't been easy and he was quick to discipline her when it was required. After much arguing back and forth. Bill finally
forced Kelly to come out of the truck.
Kelly leaned against the truck and groaned in pure misery as everyone greeted Bill and called him what she deemed to be lame things like the extreme and stuff like that. Bill called Kelly over when everyone was greeting her kindly and telling her long time no see.
Jade had seen Bill pull up and had gone to greet him and then she saw her sister Kelly get out and turned the other way and ducked behind Beltzer's van. Beltzer noticed Jade hide behind the van. "What's wrong?" he asked. "My horrendous cheer whore sister is with them." Jade said in a bitter tone while whispering. "Jade don't call your sister a cheer whore." Jo scolded Jade slightly. "I mean look at her she even has the Rachel hairstyle! I can't believe I'm supposed to be identical to that thing!""Well kiddo you can either deal with it and greet your dad or greet your dad separately but it looks like they're coming this way." Haynes commented when Jo had gone back to fixing the satellite. Jade waved sheepishly and ducked between vehicles to end up
hiding behind Dusty's bus and hear him talking to Melissa and explaining tornadoes to her.
Jade didn't know who this woman was but she was assuming it was most likely Bill's new girlfriend. This caused Jade to cringe slightly though it was also funny to hear Dusty jabber to Melissa about tornadoes.
Jade would come out in due time, she just needed to prepare herself. This truly wouldn't be a happy family reunion that's for sure shit. It might be bittersweet. Actually it probably be mostly bitter. Jade slid down to the ground slightly with a sigh and looked towards the darkening sky.
To Be Continued
A/N: Okay so I know it was mostly long winded but I tried to alter things to fit for the twins and the 90s. I also tried to give the characters more depth. Also yes I'm aware after the O. thing they discontinued the Ford Bronco which is pretty sad cause that was a cool looking car. Also I dunno what year it was discontinued. Also the Rachel hairstyle from Friends really did become popular and girls did wear those cute babydoll dress things with boots.
I may have explained it badly. I suck at descriptions. I tried my best to write these twins make the polar opposites and make story fit. I worked my buns off. Also I'm saving the family reunion for the next chapter. I hope you guys enjoy it and that its not long winded as I said I tried to include everything. I tried to give the characters more depth. Also thank you to the fanfic authors in the twister section who inspired me to do this. I hope you guys enjoy it!
