Chapter 1

"This is stupid!" Lisett exclaimed as she pounded her desk, "I swear im gonna punch my monitor."

"Why?" Hannah asked, sitting up on her bed,

"This assignment, I've literally asked all of my classmates for help and none of them will help me!"

"Huh, well punch this pillow instead." Hannah grabbed a pillow and whipped it at her friend.

Lisett swatted it away, "This isn't funny, if i don't turn in this assignment I wont pass!"

Hannah hopped off the top bunk, "Lisett c'mon, it's Friday night, it's a weekend and you're in college! Why can't you have at least a little bit of fun?"

"Because some of us don't like to procrastinate." Lisett deadpanned,

Hannah shrugged, "I still get it done though. C'mon Lisort, at least step away from the assignment to get dinner with me." Hannah put her hands on her friends shoulders,

Lisett chuckled at her nickname, "Okay Hannort, let's go."

The two girls looked at their food in disgust, "We pay thousands of dollars in tuition for this gruel?" Hannah asked,

"Ever notice that when we go on these college tours the food is always better?" Lisett asked,

"It's how they bait you." Hannah pushed the plate away from her and took a sip of her coffee,

"Ugh, how can you drink that nasty shit at 7:30 in the evening?" Lisett asked in disgust,

"Very easily, it stops me from murdering people who annoy me."

"You know coffee isn't good for your skin."

Hannah shrugged, "I'll worry about that when I'm dead." She took another sip of the drink.

Lisett rolled her eyes, "I'm heading back to the room." She grabbed her plate, "Wait up." Hannah ran after her. Lisett nearly froze in her tracks when she looked up and noticed the man she so desperately had a crush on, he was standing in the dinner line, with his shaved head and pale skin and awkward appearance something about him just made her melt.

Hannah looked at him, then back at her friend, "Are you eyeballing Nate again?" She asked in the hopes that she said it loud enough for him to hear,

"What? No, shut up." Lisett blushed a little,

"Look if you have a crush on the dude then ask him out already."

"No... I cant..."

"I mean you can..."

"Then I won't." She dropped the subject and the two girls left the cafeteria.

"I told you staying in was better than going to a party." Lisett said as they sat on the floor gossiping,

"Lisett, you're always right." Hannah said sarcastically with a laugh, outside the girls could hear chattering of passerbys, "Who knew college would be so interesting." Hannah said,

"How so?" Lisett inquired, taking a sip of tea,

"I mean, you don't know anyone or at least not a lot of people, the classes are different compared to high school, and you become friends with people you never would have thought to be friends with back in high school... It's like you become a completely new person, like you get a whole new identity."

"I know what you mean, I didn't think I would like you when we first met, but look at us, we bonded over tea and video games."

"And now we're best friends." They hit their mugs together and took a drink. Their pleasant conversation was interrupted by a scream in the hallway, "What the hell was that?" Hannah asked,

"I don't know." They got up and ran out into the hallway.

One of their dorm mates was crying in the hall talking to the RA, she was holding her neck, blood oozing out of the wound. The other girls came out to assess the situation as well, "Everyone go back to your rooms, there is nothing to see here, everything is fine." The RA assured them,

"Fine? She's got blood oozing out of her damn neck!" Hannah pointed out,

"It was just an accident, the authorities have been notified, they'll be in for an investigation." The RA ushered the injured girl out of the dorm hall, leaving the other girls to wonder,

"I bet her room mate bit her!" Hannah and Lisett's neighbor Bethany said,

"She was probably on bath salts to cause that much damage." Their other neighbor Jackie said,

"Oh well, guess we'll figure out what happened in the morning." Hannah shrugged it off as they all returned to their rooms.

Lisett woke with a start as she heard commotion outside the window, She looked out and noticed what appeared to be army personnel marching the campus, "Shit..." She said and turned to her sleeping room mate, "Hannah..." She shook her, Hannah moaned but didn't wake, "Hannah!" Lisett shook her again, but still nothing. Lisett sighed, "HANNAH! WAKE THE FUCK UP!" She pulled her room mate off of the top bunk and onto the floor,

"Fuck, shit, Lisett! What the f-"

"Hannah look!" Lisett drew back the curtain to show her friend her discovery.

Hannah took a look, "The army? What's that about?"

"I don't know..."

The two were interrupted by a pounding on the heavy wood door, "Open up!" A deep voice commanded from the other side. Lisett stride over to the door and opened it. An army soldier was at the door, "There has been a breach on the campus everyone must evacuate immediately." He ordered,

"A breach? What kind of breach?" Hannah asked,

"I'm afraid that's classified ma'am." Hannah gave him a look at the use of the word "ma'am",

"Can't we at least grab our stuff?" Lisett asked,

"Negative, you can only take one change of clothes with you." The two girls looked at each other and complied.

They each grabbed some clothes, deodorant and other essentials they were allowed to take in their packs before being forced out the door. Hannah noticed other soldiers searching the room where the girl had been injured just hours before, something was going on, she could feel it, and she would do anything to find out.

Lisett looked over at her friend, "Hannah, what is it?"

Hannah glanced up at the soldier in front of them, "Not now." She whispered back.

The two were led out of the dormitory into a Humvee outside with some other students, "Where are you guys taking us?" A girl asked,

"To Savannah, where you can be tested and taken to the safe zone." The driver responded.

Lisett and Hannah sat in worry for the half hour it took for them to get to Savannah, they didn't know what was going on or what would be awaiting for them when they got out of the vehicle. It was a nerve racking drive to say the least for everyone in the vehicle.

The vehicle came to a complete stop, "Alright, everyone out of the vehicle." The driver ordered the passengers out of the vehicle, Lisett and Hannah got out and squinted in the light. There were bright stadium lights set up like a football field, and tents were scattered around the field with army personnel all in hazmat suits scattered around the area going from tent to tent.

They separated everyone into groups, taking Lisett and Hannah to a tent with two other people, they were seated but no one said a word for a minute, "Lisett... Something is going on." Hannah said quietly to her friend,

"No shit Sherlock, what was your first guess." Lisett whispered sarcastically.

Hannah glared at her, "There's some kind of sickness going on." The young African American woman sitting across from them said,

"Infection?" Hannah asked,

"Yeah, didn't you hear, it started in the Midwest, and spread like a wildfire, I came down from Ohio to do a report on the evac center here." Lisett and Hannah gave each other a look.

The soldier took the woman out of the tent and Lisett was next. She noticed it was finally daybreak, the sun casting over the horizon provided at least some warmth on the rather brisk morning, she would have enjoyed it but given the circumstances, she had other things on her mind.

She was led into another tent where there was a female doctor waiting inside, "Okay, im gonna need you to strip down." The doctor said. Lisett was shocked for a second, no introduction, just straight to the point. She couldnt help but wonder what her friend would say, probably something along the lines of "Well, you could at least buy me dinner first." Yep... that would definitely be it.

The doctor checked Lisett over for anything unusual on her body, it wasnt specified what it was, but the doctor confirmed that Lisett definitely didn't have it. The rest of the visit was standard, temp check, ears, mouth, eyes, "Yep, you're good." Was all the doctor said before kicking Lisett out.

She was led back to her small group, "Geez they told me to strip down and didn't even offer me dinner first." Hannah said,

"How did I know you were gonna say that?" Lisett said,

"You know me." Hannah said.

A soldier walked over and handed them a map, "This is a map to the evac center, its at the hotel just a mile down the road." The girls looked at each other,

"You just expect us to go there on our own?" The woman asked,

"Ma'am there will be personnel to guide you along the way."

"Okay..." The group gathered their bearings and headed towards the location on the map.

The girls walked up the road to the hotel, there were people swarming the place, "Quick, let's get inside." Hannah said, they headed into the hotel.

Inside were a few stragglers heading for the staircase, "I guess we're taking the stairs." The woman said,

"Beats being shoved in the elevator with a bunch of people." Hannah said as they headed up the staircase.

The first few floors werent bad, but as they ascended they noticed it was getting smokier, suddenly the fire alarm started blaring and the lights started flashing, "Should we go back?" Lisett asked, covering her ears from the obnoxious noise,

"We're almost to the roof, come on!" Hannah encouraged.

They climbed up the last few flights of stairs and burst through the door. There were three men trying to stop the helicopter, but it was too late, by the time they got there the helicopter was long gone.
