2015: Because I feel that Luigi stories have been lacking recently, and I haven't seen a high quality Luigi pairing with Rosalina. I intend for this to be quite the adventure. Will be rated T for now unless demand for a change to whatever convinces me to do so. The intro is in third person, and I may switch the format of first-person to third-person in certain chapters, which I'll notify. Reviews and feedback appreciated! Hope you all enjoy!
2021: Much has changed since I last visited this story. Personal developments kept me away from writing. There's a phrase known as 'losing one's smile' I lost mine and my love of storytelling. The pandemic has given me some time to begin reading once again. With that came a refounded discovery of that lost smile. I debated between restarting entirely, versus doing chapter re-writes. Unbelievably (to me, anyway), I still receive occasional emails on a review for this story or a follow. Looking back, there is still so much left to write, and so much to improve on with my old chapters. What'll be happening from now is that I will be inserting some additional chapters and extending the length of my original ones to allow for far greater pacing, character development, and world-building to occur.
To any old readers: I'm sorry, and thank you if you've come back to see how this story improves and resumes.
To my new readers: Welcome.
Tale of the Green Comet
Mushroom Kingdom was quiet. Bowser was defeated once again and there was seemingly no villain in sight to take advantage of during one of the rarer moments of serenity. The sun above gently flared with the cool wind, providing the perfect summer atmosphere for the residents of the Kingdom. . Leaves floated gently with the guidance of the wind, with some even landing on a familiar green-clad fellow. A few of these green oblongs delicately swirled around his hat, landing lightly on the fellow's nose.
Luigi gently opened a single eye at the sensation, scootching himself further against a small tree. The slight touch awakened him from brief slumber, though the plumber wasn't all too thrilled.
"Why am I so sensitive in my sleep...I react to everything…" the plumber-hero groaned.
The years of adventure along with his brother and many companions had conditioned Luigi to be able to react to the slightest touch. Perhaps born of his innate fear or paranoia, Luigi was always on-edge, for better or for worse. Luigi's sensitivity had increased more so in recent times than ever before. And why? Because ever since Bowser's most recent defeat, the Mushroom Kingdom has not seen any disorder for weeks, which is a miracle within itself. This kind of peace hasn't been around since Mario had defeated Bowser after the Koopa King took over Princess Peach's castle. Sure, the peace was (temporarily) ruined when Luigi was suckered into thinking he had a new mansion, but that's beyond the point. Luigi was left restless, simply waiting for when the next incident would occur.
"This-a feels too weird…No kart racing, no sports, no parties, no ghosts, not even Smash. Just…silence." Luigi thought. This was the first time where he could simply sit down and try to nap. This wasn't enough for him, and he assumed for Mario as well. All these years of adapting to madness, it wasn't like they could just get used to it on the dime. These were heroes of cities, kingdoms, and planets. Turning around and suddenly telling duos as busy as them to suddenly stay put was beyond anything they've experienced in ages.
"What should-a Luigi do…maybe…go…to town? Maybe-a Rougeport? I can't-a even remember when the last time I'va been there."
With that, Luigi stood up, shivering a bit from a sudden cold breeze. All around him was simply green land, and really, he had no idea how to get to the town area from where he was positioned. Either Mario Bro would be lost if they aimlessly hiked into a green pasture. At times, the Bros knew other planets better than they did of the quieter Kingdom areas. Luigi had camped out for a few days, wanting to experience the nature he was no longer accustomed to in an effort to rectify that/
"Dangit Luigi, let's uh…let's try this."
With expert and practiced agility, Luigi sprung up immediately while pulling out a red star from underneath his cap. Instantly, Luigi's attire changed into an unusual black and green pattern. Without any hesitation, Luigi jumped once more, spinning and beginning to float.
And then he fell.
"Oh come on, I can't use-a this star on this planet? Bummer, guess I'll have to borrow one of bro's old things." Luigi said while pulling a single feather out of his cap. To many, this would look like any other bird feather. To those Mario has faced in the past, the feather was a terror. As Luigi held the feather and focused on it, the feather seemed to have a reaction as it disappeared. At the same time, Luigi's cap began to grow feathers as well.
"I…really don't wanna ask why", mumbled Luigi as he took off flying through the azure sky after a series of jumps. Throughout the beginning of the flight, Luigi couldn't help but scratch his ear in annoyance. The feather tickled a few spots given the texture, and it was a sensation that was foreign to Luigi as this was the first time he used the feather himself. Normally, he would use his red star, but Luigi assumed that this wasn't feasible due to the difference in orbit on his home planet. The more he pondered the differences between the red star and feather, the more it made him wonder as to where he got the red star in the first place. Events happen so quickly that they can get hard to keep track of.
"I remember-a maybe it was around the time I taught some children…? No no…that doesn't seem right. Maybe from a Party? But those items rarely-a work outside special events." All kinds of thoughts went through Luigi's head as he tried to remember the origin of one of his items. This is what happens when Luigi has simply too much free time. Usually, he has to focus and strategize on rescuing and saving, but with downtime, his thoughts couldn't help but focus in on something as minute as an item. Luigi didn't know what else he could be thinking at this time. His thoughts at least kept him company, though those thoughts were interrupted as he spotted Princess Peach's castle after a few minutes of flying.
"Okay…which way from her-" he started, before feeling a pull and heavy feeling. Luigi fought against the sensation while confused as to what was happening. The confusion resolved itself when Luigi felt himself lose that flight sensation: "What-a? No! Does the winged cap have a time limit? Nobody-a told me!"
At that moment, Luigi's terror echoed through the lands as he screamed from the sky. Perhaps the scream was unnecessary, as Luigi was only about a hundred feet off the ground. Luigi has jumped from taller heights in complete safety.
He stopped his screaming once he landed in predictable safety, turning red in embarrassment.
"Please let-a no one have-a seen that. Damnit, Luigi, you gotta get your act together… It's no wonder things are the way they are now…" he lamented to nobody in particular.
With that, Luigi walked towards an open cannon outside the Princess's Castle. Luigi had no clue where Rougeport was but figured he could just try enough directions while his mind wandered aimlessly.
Luigi's frustration with his quiet environment was not as a result of having an itch for an adventure like his older brother, but instead, being uncomfortable with his thoughts. Luigi had been suffering from a broken heart, having lost Daisy's affection suddenly to Waluigi. Luigi felt ashamed of this fact, considering with Waluigi, the most he's ever done was force people into dance-offs while trying to be a bad guy. This occurred during Luigi's escapade to space, in which a series of mistakes made and significant time away from Daisy culminated in her decision to cut things off with the man in green. Peach delicately informed him of the change and request that it would be best for the two to stop talking entirely. Luigi knew that he could blame whatever he wanted to, whatever elements that were out of his hand, Mario, Yoshi, blame whatever. Blame Bowser Kid for manipulating Luigi to steal stars from Daisy at an old party. None of it mattered.
Luigi knew the truth. The only thing he could blame was himself. And he did just that, sulking and reeking of heartbreak. The only thing to get him out of that negative state of mind was Bowser attacking and causing Luigi to have no time to sulk over that matter. Now, with Bowser gone, Luigi has been left in his own thoughts to stew and reflect on his errors.
"I wish I didn't up…" Luigi stated quietly, while the echo of firing canon filed the quiet, only leaving a flying Luigi as the source of the sound.
After what seemed like hours of flying, Luigi crashed into town in nearly 3 minutes. Rougeport. A town, home to many of Luigi when he was at his lowest. It was only fitting he chose to come here. Misery breeds company, and there is no company quite like memories.
"Ow ow ow!" he yelped, landing right on his bum. A bit of exaggerated smoke could be seen from the man as he stood up and looked around.
Surveying the area, no one seemed to mind. That was understandable, considering how much the Mushroom Kingdom goes through. A flying man in green landing from the sky is nothing unusual to people who have seen the near end of the world, especially in this very town. Some people did recognize the plumber, high-fiving and greeting him. Wario would probably be basking in the attention this instant, but not Luigi-he just needed to be alone.
'What's around-a here anyway?'
He wasn't the guy to just go out and about to the busiest part of town in a shopping center, even before he turned into a hero. Yet, he forced himself to in an effort to distract himself. Visiting store after store, Luigi simply could not leave his shy shell, bringing in the same shyness to every purchase he made. Some purchases were free because of the inevitable shopowner recognizing and saying, 'hey, it's Luigi' while others went along as if he was any other. The plumber couldn't tell if he loved or hated it. Before long, Luigi finished his shopping spree with bags on bags of material. Miraculously, he shoved everything into his cap.
"How do I do that anyway?" Luigi said to no one.
Before that question could be answered, Luigi was interrupted by his thoughts once again, this one focused on his dear friend Professor E Gadd. After storying his last item with impossible physics, Luigi pressed the "L" on his cap, a function the Professor made for Luigi as a token of gratitude for his previous assistance against ethereal creatures. The plumber immediately dematerialized and warped back home. Walking through his front door, Luigi dropped his bag to see a startled Mario.
"Hey, just going to test something and I'll-a be back bro!" was heard. Before any response could be given, Luigi bolted, running to the nearby Forest Maze in remembrance of and a request he made. Luigi recalled their conversation:
"Okay Luigi, I really need you to try something for me. Over back in the Smash tournaments, you did this thing which did another thing with the thing, I think, uh, a Smash Ball, which you did to create what you call the Negative Zone. How did you do it?"
"I don't-a know actually, I kinda felt electricity all throughout my body, so I felt-a like I just sort of released it from every part of me, and I made the Negative Zone."
"Sukusuku, Yabobyabo. Brilliant! Do you know what you had done?!"
Not really-"
"Well you should! You use that electricity, and indirectly manipulate it to use the Higins Boson particle! What that does mean? It means you control a particle that breaks in a ten-sextillionth of a second! You manipulate the Higgs Field which creates an entanglement and then a wormhole, bringing out the Anti-Higgs particle which creates a giant wormhole of anti-matter around you that goes so fast through the speed of light that you slow time itself. Suk-"
"Yes yes, the sukucoco stuff. I have no idea what-a this means Doc!"
"Just, try it without the Smash ball. Try to build electricity and…find the sensation, and just release it as fast as you can and let me know."
Luigi rushed towards Forest Maze, thinking of the conversation and how he was going to produce results that would need the strength of a Smash Ball. He would try, but he couldn't guarantee anything. Luigi had used electricity to a degree, but he was nowhere near adept enough to suddenly create a field. As he rushed through the forest, Luigi began noticing something a bit off about his environment.
'Where is everybody?'
He's seen a few people, and to think about it, the town was way quieter when he finished shopping versus when he had gotten in. Many of the pedestrians seemingly disappeared from sight after he exited the last shop on Rogeuport's shopping strip. Similarly, there was barely anyone in the Forest and the day was perfect for enjoying this kind of nature.
"Go" spoke an unknown voice, followed by a flash of purple. Sitting high above the clouds in his clown car, Bowser nodded in acknowledgment of the unknown voice. A fog slowly crept around bowser, as its essence morphed to create a specialized Ztar. With Bowser gazing and listening to the voice held the Ztar. Everything around the object felt hideous, corrupted, and wrong. What was once a former Starman was mutated into this hideously wicked entity that reeked of raw negative energy. Bowser continued to gaze at the star, his hand becoming slowly drained of its energy from the touch. With recognition to its function, Bowser let go of the Ztar, dropping it to the world below.
There was little pandemonium. This Ztar simply went to each and every individual it could sense around the lands, and released a portion of its power to incapacitate them. Nothing lethal. Just slight thumps as it traveled through the Kingdom and swapped its negative energy for whatever energy it could parasitically absorb from its victim. Minute by minute, thump by a thump, everyone slumped in unexpected silence. It only took mere moments before the town side of Mushroom Kingdom was silent from this attack. The Ztar swiftly traveled through the air to continue raiding different towns. Whichever area had the highest density was where the fiend would start its attack. The Ztar was relentless, attacking the public square of phasing through homes.
"Hey Papa, what's that?" one child toad asked an older toad.
"That's a Star! Wonder why-" the toad was cut off as the Ztar touched him, immediately falling over in front of his child
"Papa, Papa! What happen-" the child too, was cut off as the Ztar made contact. No screaming, just a usual pattern of recognition, confusion, a thump, silence. Rinse and repeat throughout the Kingdom. Eventually, the Ztar would exhaust its options in the towns, Yet, it continued, invading Peach's castle.
"Uh, isn't that a Starman? Why's it black?" a toad at the front entrance noted as the Ztar phased in.
"That's a Ztar. Why's it here?" another toad guard pondered.
"Let's see! What're you-" another guard asked, approaching it.
"DON'T TOUCH IT!" yet another toad screamed. As soon as all eyes turned to the loud guard, the Ztar quickly dispatched each toad with ease. Once again, silence. The Ztar zipped through the castle, no one anticipating it to be a threat much to their folly. Soon enough, the Ztar appeared in Peach's room. Unsuspecting as can be, Peach went from combing her hair to falling over her bed without suspicion in the world as to what just occurred in her castle. That, however, left Ztar without any energy sources to continue swapping itself with, and it was quickly expiring.
While this assault was ongoing, Luigi stood in the Forest, squatting and desperately trying to build electricity. To any passerby, it would look as if Luigi was attempting to make nature his toilet as he awkwardly squatted and grunted in concentration. Luigi was straining with trying to focus his electric manipulation on himself, making Luigi appreciate the power of the Smash ball far more. Unbeknownst to Luigi, the Ztar had already incapacitated Mario nearby. Luigi hadn't realized that if he hadn't warped out towards his home, he would have been rendered unconscious with the rest of the civilians. Neither did he know, the Ztar was headed towards him.
"Okay Luigi, look for that feeling, feel the electricit-wat" Luigi stammered, seeing a purple-black glow approaching at a furious rate.
"Buildelectricitybuildelectricitybuildbuild-"
Luigi's thoughts accelerated to a ten as he witnessed a Ztar angrily approaching him. In that moment, fear took over, which in turn began to accelerate his internal electric manipulation. With realization, Luigi understood why it was called a Negative Zone. This zone is a byproduct of his negative energy, with his outlet being the very electricity he was focusing on. This whole time, he focused on the wrong thing. Luigi's greatest curse was also an indirect gift, something heartbreaking and all the more frustrating to him. As the Ztar came within a few hundred feet from him, Luigi let his thoughts flow. Daisy. His brother. Bowser. Himself.
"Build Luigi, build!" he screamed, unleashing a large amount of electricity from his body to make a Negative Zone that, really, paled to what he could do during Smash tournaments. The radius was no more than a few feet. Turns out, this was all he would need. At the same time, the Ztar headed toward Luigi unknowingly entering the Zone and unleashing part of its power to make the Zone go adverse. The negative environment was quickly changing colors as the Ztar's energy was being stripped and dispersed around the zone. From green to purple, to a black void, Luigi panicked, shrouded by darkness and fear as he was trapped in this Zone with a reaction that no one could have anticipated. He panicked, causing the Zone's strength to intensify. That was until he felt a small piercing sensation. Gasping, the Negative Zone had ended abruptly, before noticing a small disturbance.
He absorbed the Ztar. Immediately, negative memories flooded his mind as a result. Daisy, his cowardice and fear, King Boo, Bowser, everything. Luigi felt himself falling into an increasingly negative trance, and was aware that this was due to the Ztar. Looking around, Luigi ran. He didn't know where to or why, but he needed to run somewhere. As he ran out of the forest, he spotted Peach's castle. Thinking he could talk to her and confide some of his thoughts there, Luigi barged in, only to see several toads on the ground without moving. In fear, Luigi turned around, cursing himself for not checking on Peach. Conflicted, he pressed his cap to warp home, hoping to see his brother.
"Mario-I-" he started and stopped, seeing Mario slumped over. In delusion, he began to cry hysterically.
"What is happening? Here? To me? Make it stop!" he screamed as increasingly disturbing thoughts entered his mind. Flashes of Mr. L appeared in front of Luigi. Attempting to touch the figure, it faded as he began sobbing further. Luigi ran towards his brother, hoping to stir him awake. "Please bro, wake up!" he pleaded. Luigi noticed Mario was breathing, but the relief wouldn't register as his mind continued to walk towards that dark corner.
I need to go. I need to run. Somewhere. Anywhere. I need to be alone.
The Ztar's effects took over once more, driving Luigi to run towards his basement.
And there it was. Up against a wall was a giant Launch Star. Beyond that is a tunnel built by Gadd to act as a pathway and ramp towards space. Mario was the only one to ever use this. Not knowing how the Launch Star worked or where it went, Luigi hesitated before the Ztar's influence began to take over once more.
"I'm running…again…" Luigi stated, tears running down his face as he ran towards the star, sobbing. Just as fast as he ran, he was soon in space, having passed out from the small trauma and abrupt travel.
And that is the introduction, hope you liked it! For a few notes to clarify to the audience:
1.) Luigi has never used a Wingcap in the games, but the idea comes from the fact that in the beta for Super Mario 64 DS, he could.
2.) This story occurs a few months after Super Mario 3D Land
3.) "Did I get it from teaching kids to read when Mario went missing?" comes from a reference to Mario is Missing.
4.) Super Mario RPG is where Forest Maze comes from, being the origin of the famed character Geno.
5.) The ramble with Gadd and the Higins Bosson, I used random beliefs from current events with science to formulate that. In no way is that accurate.
Hope you enjoyed it! :)
