The waning moon shone brightly among the stars in a near cloudless sky, shining its light down onto a vast windswept moor. At the highest point of the moor, surrounded by a dense wall of bramble bushes, a large group of cats was gathered. Most were silent, watching as a huge tabby stood over a cowering black she-cat, the dark fur on her swollen belly pressed to the ground as she stared up at his snarling face with pleading green eyes.
"Please Eaglestar," she begged, voice cracking with desperation. "Don't do this, my kits are due any day."
But the tom's lips just drew back at her words, the fury in his amber eyes unrelenting. "You've given me no choice Moonwing," he hissed. "You're a traitor for carrying that tom's kits. Even the most most hare-brained kit knows it's against the warrior code to take a mate from another Clan."
The she-cat flinched as if his words had physically struck her. "I know," she rasped softly. "It never should have happened, I made a mistake! But I can promise you that they'll never know who their real father is! My kits will be nothing but loyal to you and WindClan."
"Loyalty," Eaglestar scoffed, tail lashing behind him. "What does a traitor like you know of loyalty?"
The rest of the cats looked on in sympathy. Moonwing was a well liked young warrior, and while few of them actually agreed with Eaglestar, more than a few sending disapproving glares their leader's way, they all knew better than to protest. He was not a cat you wanted to cross.
"Have I ever given you a reason to doubt my loyalty before now?" She tried to reason, though deep down she knew there was no changing his mind now. He had made his decision.
The tom opened his maw to retort, but fell silent as a pale tortoiseshell padded forward, resting the tip of her tail on Moonwing's shoulders and bravely meeting Eaglestar's gaze.
"Do you really think this is for the best?" She challenged him. "Yes, her kits may be born half-clan, but they will still have WindClan blood. If you let them stay, you'll have that many more loyal warriors to keep us strong. Are you really willing to cast that aside over one young cat's mistake?"
"Larksong," the tom growled back, amber eyes narrowing. "As my deputy, you know I value your thoughts over any others here, but you should know as well as I that no cat of mixed blood has any place within our ranks. They and their foolish mother will make WindClan weak!"
There were a few uneasy mutterings that arose from the gathered cats around them, but no cat raised their voice in support of either side. There would be no real winner here tonight, regardless of the outcome.
"All I see is a Clan leader turning away one of his cats in her time of need!" Larksong protested, a desperate anger shining in her own amber eyes. "The warrior code tells us to protect queens and their kits, and you would still cast them out? Moonwing is due any day now and you would make her have her kits in an unknown territory without a medicine cat's assistance?"
"Rogues and loners do it all the time," Eaglestar snorted, clearly done arguing over his decision now. "What happens to Moonwing and her kits should no longer be of any concern to you. By my right as leader of WindClan, I declare Moonwing a traitor and exile her from our territory! She has until dawn to leave our lands for good, and should she be found within our borders after, she is to be treated as the intruder she is."
Larksong was ready to argue further, but paused as she felt Moonwing's tail lightly brush her flank.
"It's all right," the young she-cat meowed softly, resigning herself to her fate, and reaching up to touch her nose to the deputy's cheek. "I'll go, just don't cause any trouble for yourself over me. Please." Moonwing was heartbroken and terrified in that moment if she was being honest with herself, and more ashamed of what she had done than she could ever put into words. Larksong was her former mentor, and while she appreciated the she-cat standing up for her, she had done this to herself and didn't want to get her in trouble with Eaglestar as well.
She would figure something out. She had to. Many solitary queens birthed and cared for their kits successfully, as Eaglestar had said, so she was sure she would be able to do the same thanks to her warrior training. She would miss her Clan terribly of course, but grieving could come later. Her kits would keep her busy these next few moons.
"Moonwing," Larksong's meow was troubled, but the black she-cat shook her head.
"I don't have a choice," she replied quietly. "I don't have a place in WindClan anymore, but I'll be alright."
The tortoiseshell was silent for a long moment, anguish clear in her eyes, but eventually she nodded with a sigh. "Then I wish you luck, StarClan watch over you."
A fresh wave of sorrow washed over her then, and she leaned in to bury her face into the deputy's shoulder; feeling a gentle tongue rasp between her ears in return. Though it had been many moons since Moonwing had earned her warrior name, she had kept a close bond with her old mentor and she would be one of the cats she missed the most.
Pulling away, she met Eaglestar's gaze again. "You have my word that I will not return after tonight," she promised quietly. "You'll have no more trouble from me."
"Good," the tabby nodded, clearly pleased. "I had hoped to avoid having to use more drastic means to get rid of you."
Moonwing bowed her head to the leader for the last time, before turning and making her way towards the camp entrance. Before she made it there however, a young spotted tortoiseshell bounded forward, wail rising in her throat.
"Don't go Moonwing!," she begged. "You promised you'd see me become a warrior."
A sad purr rose in the she-cat's throat and she rasped her tongue over her apprentice's ear. "I know Petalpaw, I'm sorry. I tried to be the mentor you deserved, and I know you'll make a great warrior one day if you keep working hard and do as Hareflight says." Though Moonwing had to pass the apprentice to a more able bodied warrior once her belly grew too large to continue her regular duties, she still kept close watch over Petalpaw's progress and was so proud of the fierce young cat she was becoming.
"I'm going to miss you so much," the tortoiseshell lamented. "But I'll never forget you and all the things you taught me!"
Moonwing touched her nose to Petalpaw's in farewell, and looked up as two black and white toms approached. "Patchnose, Cloudfoot." There was pain in her mew as she addressed her brother and father. "I'm so sorry."
"Don't be," there was an angry glint in Cloudfoot's green eyes. "Eaglestar is a fool, and I'm more than tempted to give him a piece of my mind for this."
"No," she shook her head at the elderly tom. "It's my own fault, I should have known better. Don't get yourself in trouble over me."
"We'll all miss you," Patchnose meowed quietly, touching his tail to her shoulder, eyes pained. "Look after yourself out there."
"I'll try," Moonwing gazed at her littermate for what she knew was probably the last time. They had always been close, and it was strange to think that this was really it. "Try not to worry about me too much; keep working hard and I'm sure Eaglestar will give you one of Palestripe's kits to mentor!"
Patchnose flattened his ears in displeasure at the mention of the leader, who before now she knew he had respected greatly. "Perhaps."
"Perhaps," she echoed with a weary purr, licking his cheek. "You're a great warrior Patchnose, WindClan is lucky to have you."
"You should be here too!" He insisted with a lash of his tail. "This isn't fair, you don't deserve this."
"Eaglestar is getting old," Cloudfoot meowed softly then, glancing over at the leader who was watching them from across the clearing through narrowed eyes, tail twitching impatiently. "Once Larksong is leader, I'm sure she will let you and the kits back."
Moonwing just shook her head. "Maybe, but that could still be seasons away."
"Better a few seasons than a lifetime," her father sighed. "But either way, look after yourself and those kits, alright? We'll meet again, either here or in StarClan with your mother. I know she's as proud of the warrior you've become as I am."
"Thank you," Moonwing lowered her gaze as a fresh wave of shame washed over her. "StarClan watch over you." And then she turned abruptly away to pad out of camp, determinedly not meeting any other cats gaze, knowing she couldn't handle saying goodbye to each and every cat in the Clan.
However, just as she reached the gorse tunnel, Petalpaw's loud meow rang out. "Goodbye Moonwing, I'll never forget you!" And then every cat seemed to be yowling their own farewells.
"Farewell Moonwing!"
"Good luck!"
"StarClan walk with you, wherever you go!"
"Look after yourself out there!"
"We'll miss you!"
The she-cat froze, paws trembling as emotion threatened to overwhelm her. She stood there for a moment, listening, her eyes trained hard on the ground in front of her refusing to look back at them, before she swallowed the lump in her throat and pushed her way out of camp; the yowls echoing in her ears as she made her way east toward the thunderpath. She didn't know where she would go or what she would do when her kits came, but all she could do now was put one paw in front of the other and face her fate head on...
Well hello there, thanks for checking this story out! Its actually a very old one I had started years ago, but I've gotten back into fics lately and remembered this one and, well, decided to rewrite it and make it 100x better than the old one. I've got quite a bit of the story written at this point, and plan on updating a couple times a week as I continue to tweak and edit things. Hopefully you all stick around to see what happens, I'm quite proud of this story :)
