We entered the lab, and Simmons walked up to us
"May, Agent L/N. Are you ready for your check-up?"
"No." I spun in a 360, before adding "Just kidding, ready to medically examined by a SHIELD legend. Not freaking out at all."
May rolled her eyes while Simmons just laughed "I don't bite. Let's go somewhere a bit more private. Would you mind if May stayed? I may need a bit of assistance, and all our other female technicians are occupied elsewhere"
"I don't mind. She's seen worse."
Simmons led us over to a medical bed. I sat down, and she pulled the curtain around us.
"Okay," she started "Any injuries that need immediate attention?"
"Nope," I lied "Just a lot of bruises. I think Hydra should change their colour from red to purple"
"Look over here kid" May's voice came from behind me
"Why?" I knew what she was doing. Trying to see if moving hurt me.
I felt a cold hand on my neck and I squirmed, smothering a giggle. Doing so I pushed down on one of my ribs- which really hurt. I grunted, which resulted in May's retreat
"Still ticklish and hurt, what a surprise" May deadpanned, then told Simmons "Bruised ribs, could be broken" The scientist nodded, and asked me to pull up my shirt.
I huffed, but obeyed. My stomach was practically blue, with blood seeping out of a (fairly large) cut just above my belly button.
"Dear me" Simmons muttered, then asked May to grab some bandages.
"Are you feeling dizzy?" The doctor asked, and I decided not to lie- May would see right though me
"Lil bit" I grumbled, so she grabbed me a bottle of water.
May came back with the bandages, and they got me to take off my top and trousers, leaving me in my pants and vest. I was standing- or sitting, I guess- in front of a SHIELD legend and my SO, without proper clothes on. How much worse could my life get?
The duo patched up my wounds- there was a fair number- and I put my clothes back on.
I was given another bottle of water, instructed to stay hydrated and report to Simmons if I still felt dizzy tomorrow, and led out of the lab.
My SO and I walked in silence, but I found comfort in her presence. It has been a while. A couple of months before I officially graduated Ops, she quit as my SO, and transferred to admin. It was after that mission in Bahrain, the welcome wagon. Still don't know what happened, but I won't push. She was always the quiet part of Philinda.
Anyway, we got to a room that looked like a sort of common area, with a tv and games console. We took a staircase up to a tiny hallway, leading to a door.
May knocked, and Coulson answered "Come in"
She opened the door, and I shuffled inside. Coulson looked up as May shut the door "Y/N, I can explain"
"Oh, can you?" I can't believe that he's alive. How long has he been alive for- he's been dead nearly a year. "Because the way I see it- and I could be wrong here- is that you're either a zombie, a robot, an imposter, or a liar! Which one is it, Socs."
That was my nickname for him: Supervising Officer Coulson. I gave it to him within a month of him being my SO- he's a easy guy to trust. Or so I thought.
"I didn't lie. I was dead. For 40 seconds. Then they managed to bring me back. I was ordered by Fury not to inform anyone except a few. I wasn't allowed to tell you because you were still in touch with Nat and Clint. They're avengers- they think I'm dead! We couldn't risk you slipping."
"Don't lie! I looked at your death report, at your supposed last words. You were stabbed through the heart, Coulson! Through. the. heart. That is not something that can be fixed in 40 seconds! Just tell me the truth!"
He sighed. I knew it was a lie. It took a month of begging to get Fury to give me access to that report, and only after I stopped doing missions.
"She won't stop asking," May told him "And I think we can trust her,"
"Okay," Another sigh from boss man "I was brought back using the blood of an alien. It was a formula called GH-325. There's no more of it, and it was a level 10 classified project named TAHITI that I managed before I deemed it too inhumane. My memory of the procedure was… squashed down and replaced with memories of staying on the island of Tahiti."
"Damn," That's a lot to take in "Okay. I won't tell. But if you ever feel crap, or something bad happens 'cause of this alien serum thing, just tell me. I'll help you out,"
"I forgot how sweet you can be," Coulson smiled
"'m not sweet. I'm a badass."
"Sure you are," May ruffled my hair.
I turned to look at her, which was my fatal mistake.
As I was about to complain about her messing up my style, Coulson jumped up from his chair, and ran round for a hug. He wrapped his arms around me, and I tried to push him away.
"Get off!" I complained, pushing him again.
But he didn't let go. Before I knew what was happening, I was sobbing. God, hormones suck. Yeah, it was definitely hormones.
"I missed you, you idiot!" I managed to choke out. He responded by stroking my hair and whispering reassurances.
After another minute of standing there- during which I managed to stop crying- Coulson pulled away. I wiped my eyes as he said "We'll have dinner, then get you a bunk. Tomorrow May, Skye and Simmons can take you shopping"
"Yay!" I responded the same time May did "NO!"
"What? Why not?"
"She is annoying! When we do the classic, mother-daughter cover during shopping, she makes it her secondary mission to humiliate me. And, she'll end up getting Skye on her side- and maybe even Simmons. It will be hell."
I pouted, and did puppy dog eyes.
"May. You will take our rookie on a shopping trip. We'll be resuming her training after she's settled in, and you'll need to do most of it. I'm a bit busy being director. Think of it as catch-up, reunion time."
"And when will you do your 'catch-up, reunion time'?" May asked
"I'm gonna help him cook!" Was my response. God, I love his lasagna more than anything. And his cookies. They are heaven.
Coulson sighed "I'm too busy to cook. I've only cooked for our current team once at most."
"Think of it as a way to heal the rift between us, make up for your lies. Through your lasagna and cookies." May whistled, it was a low blow.
Another sigh, he does a lot of those "Fine. But you can't let May touch the food until it's on a plate. That's an order."
"Of course," I nodded.
"Okay, we should introduce you properly to the team now. They're down in the common area" Coulson told me as we left his office.
We walked down the stairs, and back into that common area. There was a group of people sat on the couch- it was the team from earlier- minus the blonde, Bobbi. Fitz and Mack were playing Mario Kart.
"Go left, there's a shortcut with a power-up." I think I made him jump, but he followed my instructions. He beat Mack by a second.
"Noooo!" Mack yelled. Everyone else laughed until Skye asked "How did you know about that, we've been playing for months and never seen that shortcut?"
"Barton thought it was good reflexes and strategy training for members of the kid agent program. And I had to beat May at something." I grinned "other than Just Dance and cooking" I whispered in Coulson's ear and he chuckled
"Okay, you guys get chatting, me and May need to talk a bit more in my office," Coulson informed us as he walked upstairs.
Sorry if I make May a bit OOC, I'm just a sucker for mama may fluff
