The next morning, they skipped breakfast due to some intense lovemaking, which Jane loved in the morning hours. They rushed of board just in time to join the group for the guided tour through the town.
It was the woman to whom Jane had given the fake number by the pool who noticed the rings first and who immediately screamed through the crowds "They're engaged! Yay! There is going to be a wedding. Guys cheer for the happy couple!"
Now many of the other guests came over to congratulate and hug them. People were clapping and everybody looked happy for them. And Jane thought that she had been hit by a train when the crowd obviously began planning their wedding for next week.
"It makes perfectly sense Jane." Maura stated. "You said yourself, that this is like honeymoon."
"No, no, no, no no." Jane whispered to Maura in a determined way with eyes wide in shock which rather came from the sudden rush and the imagination of other people planning her wedding. She decidedly needed more time to get accustomed to the thought of pulling through. She had wanted to take it step by step – the first one being to ask Maura and then maybe in a year or so… but not next week. "I want a small wedding. Not a …" she was looking for the right words sounding breathless, and Maura gently touched her arms. "Okay. We'll talk about it later. Let's just enjoy the day…"
"And Ma, oh god, she's going to kill me if I ever got married without her, although I see some clear advantages…" Jane rambled on while the crowd already talked about the best place for their wedding.
"We could use the ballroom. Its huge." One girl said and someone else suggested that they should get married outside. The tiny woman from the pool nudged her with a grin. "You do know that most of us see you as heroes, right?" Jane glanced at her; panic still plastered over her face. "Why? We did nothing special?" she asked, and the woman cocked her head.
"Are you serious?" she asked in disbelieve before continuing. "You came out in public. That's pretty cool. And you stand in for your sexuality. It might change minds if high profile women like you are gay. Moreover, you serve as a good example for all the teenagers who are just fighting with their sexuality and forming. You let them know that they are not alone and that its okay to be gay. But what most of us like most about you is how grounded and natural you are. And you give us hope that we too are going to find love despite not being 18 anymore." The woman chuckled.
"Wow, that's quite a lot." Jane said and scratched her head. Never once had she seen things from this point of view. The woman nudged her again before patting her shoulder. "Yeah. And you are doing it so gracefully." She winked and Jane glanced at the groups who were discussing food now. She had been so busy with talking to the woman that she had missed the place they had decided they would get married. Now it was her turn to chuckle as she realized why they thought to be part of Maura's and her relationship somehow. And why they engaged into the matter. They were their icons, their queens. Jane cleared her throat and glanced at Maura who looked deep in thought.
The hired tour guides had a hard time shoeing everybody onto the busses which had been waiting.
"I'm sorry, I didn't even ask you for your name." Jane turned to the woman with an apologetical smile. "Oh no problem. My name is Dusty Springfield." She rolled her eyes while saying her name. "My parents thought it funny." She explained and Jane could only imagine the teasing that woman had endured.
"Where are your friends?" Jane asked glancing around. Another eye roll. "I left the group. I was tired of their stupid games." Jane nodded. "Would you like to join us for the guided tour?" she offered and glanced at Maura again who this time nodded. "That's a good idea." The blonde said with a smile and Dusty hesitated. "I don't want to disturb you if you want some alone time." She stated but Jane swiped it away. Grinning the three of them finally followed their tour guide onto the bus and settled into the same row.
Maura was sitting at the aisles, so she was in the middle. She began google mouthing both women about the towns history and Jane watched Dusty relax into her chair, assuming that she didn't mind. It was somewhat like a high school excursion where no one really listened. The group of three kept hanging behind. The guided tour was indeed reaching a point where they talked about gay celebrities who had visited or who had been born here and their achievements. Jane noted how everybody suddenly began listening closely and with interest.
By lunchtime they were set free and most of the guest walked off to the many restaurants. Jane who was hungry as well checked her phone. She was used to find small restaurant which were only patronized by locals from being a pilot. There was one just a few streets down. The other two agreed that it was a good idea to get away from the crowds and followed Jane's directions.
It was a picturesque café in a side street with a nice terrace. After settling to one of the tables Jane closed her eyes and smelled the air. The scent of delicious food mixed with the air coming from the sea. The sun was shining bright, and the street was almost empty.
A waitress came to ask for their orders. There was no menu, but she had some recommendations. They all went for some local plate which consisted of sea fruit, linguini and other local ingredients. Leaning back, they enjoyed an aperitive. Jane watched Maura whose brain was clearly still rattling because of the wedding and Dusty who got up to take some pics with her phone.
She realized that Maura didn't want to wait for a year to tie the knot and that the celebration on the ship was tempting to her. And she didn't have to reach far to find the reason. Maura had been socially awkward at the beginning of the trip. But after the first few days she had begun to reach out to people. And everybody was just openminded and embracing. They had become sort of a family.
Maura never had had the feeling before to belong to a group and she liked it. Jane could also see how her demeanor had changed over the past week. She slowly took a sip from her aperitive and let her mind drift. If Maura wanted to get married on the ship and she didn't. How would they solve this? There was no compromise. Not really, right? But so far, both had always managed to solve conflicts in their gentle and caring way without getting loud.
Dusty returned just in time when the plates were served. Being hungry after a 4 hour walk they dug in. The meal was delicious.
