Chapter 1 How Boring is Boring?
Here's a question for you: just how uneventful can a week be before it is officially labeled as boring? Exactly how many events can not happen before you can officially say that nothing has happened? What is the exact quantity?
Iggy, the lanky green haired Koopaling, kept his eyes glued to his Newton's cradle as he pondered this. Boredom in life was like encountering the doldrums at sea. Just as the winds refused to blow, life refused to be stimulating. For someone like Iggy, this was a real problem. He longed for stimulation, thirsted for knowledge. These two qualities were as sweet as the sugary, buttery tingle of a cookie resting on the tongue. His pursuit of knowledge and the desire to use that knowledge were what gave him purpose in life. When life is boring like it was now, it lost all purpose.
Iggy shook his head as he got to his feet. He glanced around his bedroom. On the walls were rough sketches of his inventions, on the floor were crumpled pieces of notebook paper. Iggy leaned down, picked up one of the papers, uncurled it, and scanned it over. On it was what appeared to be the distance formula. Iggy smirked as he remembered the egregious task that was associated with this formula. He had tried to calculate the distance between the planet he lived on and the edge of the galaxy. While a noble effort, it had ultimately turned up fruitless due to Iggy's lack of experience with space. Iggy furled the paper into a tight little ball and chucked it into the waste basket.
Iggy made his way out of the bedroom. As he strolled down the hallway, he took note of every fine detail. The doors to his siblings' bedrooms were closed like clam shells. The carpet underneath his feet was as red as a raging fire. This was all well and good, yet there was something about these sights. Something about this normal, everyday scene rubbed Iggy the wrong way. That, he reasoned, was probably the lack of noise. There were no sounds of any quality. Iggy strained his ears to hear something, whether it be the controlled chaos of Ludwig practicing his instruments or the electronic, clacking sounds of Larry playing a video game. Unfortunately, all he heard was silence. If it weren't for the fact that he could hear his own breath entering and exiting his body, he would have reasoned that he had gone deaf.
Was this just one of those days? Was this a day where nothing happened, nor could happen? Was Iggy doomed to wallow in the monotony that this dreaded day had to offer?
Hehe hehe.
Oh, what was this? The sound of laughter? The signs of amusement? Iggy allowed his ears to act as the GPS for the rest of his body. They led him toward the stairwell that connected the east wing's second floor hallway to the first floor hallway. He found the source of the laughter at the staircase's base, in the form of a bulky, shades wearing Koopaling and his half human girlfriend. Iggy's heart filled with euphoria.
Perhaps Roy and Celia have an intriguing anecdote to recount for me, Iggy thought. He made his way down toward the couple.
"Greetings and salutations, Roy and Celia," Iggy said. He cast them a smile. "Do you, by any chance, happen to be wishing for a third party to join in on your striking conversation?"
Roy and Celia shut right up. They slowly turned their heads toward Iggy. Both of them looked a little taken aback as they grasped each others hands.
"Uhhhh..." Roy said. He slowly let go of Celia's hands. "Hey, Iggy."
"Hello, dear older brother. Did you two just return from a day out on the town?"
Celia smiled nervously.
"We did, actually. And...we were just about to head up to Roy's bedroom. We..kinda were hoping to be alone."
Iggy blinked, not once but twice. A pit formed in his stomach.
"Why do you wish to be alone?"
Roy and Celia exchanged a look with one another before Roy took a step forward. He cupped his hand and whispered into Iggy's ear. Iggy felt his heart pump with excitement.
"Oh! You wish to do that?"
Roy nodded.
"Yeah. We weren't planning on telling anyone." His cheeks turned red. "And now that I think about it, I probably shouldn't have told you."
Iggy started to sputter like a broken bagpipe.
"Pfft. What? Why would you want to keep that a secret? If it were me, I would be shouting it from the rooftops!"
Celia smirked.
"Annd...that's why you can't get a date," she said. Iggy felt like an arrow pierced his heart just as Celia took hold of Roy's hand. "Now, if you'll excuse us..."
Roy and Celia started making their way up the stairs. Iggy followed them as Celia started whispering into Roy's ear. The third eldest Koopaling let out another giggle, this one even higher than the last. Iggy found this behavior quite fascinating, to be honest. When they got to Roy's bedroom door, Roy opened it up and swept his hand toward the entryway.
"After you."
"Why, thank you," Celia said. She was about to take a step in when she saw Roy staring at his younger brother standing behind her. She turned toward Iggy. "Umm, Iggy, do you mind?"
"Oh no, not at all," Iggy said he said as he held up his hands. He shimmied away from the door. "You two have a marvelous time." He started making his way back to his room. Before he could though, Celia stopped him.
"Actually, Iggy, before you go, there is something I wanted to ask you."
Iggy turned toward Celia in interest just as Roy let out a groan.
"Oh come on, Celia! I've been waiting all week for this; I can't wait any longer!"
Celia cast Roy a sympathetic look.
"Don't worry, this will only take a minute," she said. Roy let out a huff and made his way into the bedroom. Once the door was closed, Celia approached Iggy slowly.
"Iggy, I was wondering. You know how I haven't gone to school that long, right?"
Iggy nodded. Seeing how Celia had ran away from home when she was in fourth grade, her education was fairly limited. Celia let out a sigh.
"Well, I was wondering." She put her hands behind her back and started to twist her foot. "Since you have eight college majors..."
"Nine majors, but go on."
"...I was wondering if you would be interested in teaching me some stuff? If you don't want to that's perfectly fine, I just think..."
Iggy didn't even hear the rest. He squealed like a little girl and started to jump up and down.
"Are you kidding? I would love to teach you!"
Celia blinked.
"Really?"
"Yeah! It would give me something to do during these uneventful days! I will happily do it!"
Celia's face appeared to glow as she smiled.
"Oh thank you, Iggy! Thank you so much!"
"You are ever most welcome! Of course, given the level of my education, I find it only appropriate to charge you a fee..."
Celia laughed.
"Don't worry about that. I'm getting a job as a waitress back in the Mushroom Kingdom."
"Oh! That's awesome! That will be a good stepping stone toward a brighter future."
"That's the hope," Celia said. She let in a breath. "Well, I don't want to keep Roy waiting any longer..."
"That's fine. We'll discuss the lesson details tomorrow. Thank you, Celia!"
"No, thank you, Iggy." With that, Celia went into the bedroom. Once she was gone, Iggy did a fist pump.
