A few days later Jane crawled silently into bed. Maura automatically shifted into her arms and greeted her with a kiss. "How was your flight?" she asked and Jane who hadn't expected her to wake up hummed. "Nice, smooth…"
She reveled in the warm and soft body touching hers. Maura had turned her into a naked sleeper and there wasn't a second, she regretted giving in on this point. The doc told her about her day and Jane told her about the flight. It was past midnight. But seeing that they didn't have much together time they had taken up the habit to talk at such ungodly hours.
Jane pulled her wife a bit closer, and Maura gave a pleased sound. "But something happened." She stated, sensing Jane's distress. "Yes and no." Jane sighed. "The flight was perfect. It went well."
"What is it then?" Maura asked while turning in Jane's arm to face her.
"There is something I'd like to talk to you about." She began, putting her hand over Maura's which was resting on the sheet in the gap between them. The blonde waited patiently. "I'm tired of being away so much." Jane started slowly, giving sleepy Maura time to follow. "My mentor called me a few weeks ago with a job offer. He wants me to take over and teach at the academy and I… well, I want to take this job. I would start in three weeks."
Maura propped her head onto her elbow. Jane reading careful excitement in her eyes. "Aren't you going to miss flying?" the doc asked, and Jane tilted her head with a soft smile. "No, maybe parts of it. But I think it's time to move on. And this is a good opportunity just at the right time. I want to do this."
Maura still holding back on emotions studied her some more. Jane had always emphasized that having kids with her job was a no go. She wouldn't have the time she wanted to raise them. She nodded slightly at the questioning look. "Ready when you are Mrs. Rizzoli-Isles." She grinned and Maura almost jumped up in happiness. Jane laughed and felt her heart swell in joy.
"I love you, Jane." Maura said as she snuggled back closer.
"I love you too. Let's see if team Rizzles can handle this challenge." She joked and Maura chuckled. "Oh sure. We can handle everything!"
"I'm going to be home a lot more." Jane said, gauging Maura's reaction. "Don't say it as if it was a bad thing!" the doc teased her, and Jane laughed some more. "Glad to hear that you're okay with that. I mean when we got married you didn't sign up for this. So, I just wanted to check."
Due to the news none of them were able to find sleep for the rest of the night. By 3 am they got up and made some tea to drink it in the living room. They talked about all sorts of things. Like how to get pregnant, who was to get pregnant. It was exciting and both felt how their bond deepend. Although they didn't take any definite decision. The only thing they decided that night was to take a fertility test to see how their chances were.
It was surprisingly easy like everything in their relationship. Maura made an appointment for both. Jane felt grateful that it was Saturday, and that the doc had a day off and wasn't on call. They slept through most of the day.
Saturday evening was game night. At least once a month. Dusty would come with her girlfriend Angie. It turned out that her mother had really found a match for Jane's friend and the two couples got along great. Occasionally they were joined by Andrea and Lucinda and Frankie who would bring his new girlfriend tonight. Maura and Jane were the ones responsible for hosting the event and spent some good amount of time of preparing the game and the snacks and drinks.
They had agreed on keeping the latest developments in their life a secret until Jane had started her new job and until they were really pregnant. Team Rizzles worked well as usual, every part of the couple knowing what to do. When the doorbell rang, Jane had just finished putting the snacks onto the coffee table. They would also order Pizza later.
Meanwhile Maura opened the door to Frankie who walked in with what Maura called the Rizzoli swagger. The woman by his side was rather shy but smiling as they got introduced. Nina was working at BPD as well. Jane shook her hand and welcomed her to their home. It didn't take long for them to warm up and the pilot decided that she liked her.
Dusty and Angie arrived almost at the same time as Andrea and Lucinda did. Being complete and each settled with the beverage of their choice, they started the game. Each couple forming a team. Team Rizzles was leading thanks to Maura's ability to explain difficult words and Jane's ability to paint good pictures when the lots got hungry.
After ordering the pizza they paused the game and all relaxed for some talking. Jane who had never been much of a people person was happy of the development and the friends who had gathered at their house. It was good to see how comfortable everybody felt. Even Frankie who was the only man in the room. His career was moving forward as well as he was training for the detective's test. Together with Dusty and the help of Maura and Nina.
Jane was tempted to mention that she too would soon change jobs. But she just smiled and listened to cop stories. Maura added from the perspective of the ME and Jane who knew most of the stories already offered another round of drinks.
"Why is it that we never invite Susie?" she asked when Maura joined to help her. They were standing in their kitchen and Jane was already gathering the beers while the doc took care of the wine.
"I don't know." Jane gave her an incredulous look.
"Okay. I assumed that you didn't like her." Maura admitted.
"What? Hell, no! I'm totally fine if you want to ask her to join us."
Maura gave Jane a thoughtful look. "I'm going to ask her next time. She can pair up with Kent."
Jane smiled. "Sounds like a plan." Then she popped a snack into her mouth and admired Maura for not scolding despite being short before dinner and they walked back into the living room to their guests.
"Hey, we were just thinking that we could celebrate new year together." Dusty said, taking one of the beers out of Janes hands. "Oh yeah? We don't have any plans for New year, have we baby?" Jane asked Maura who looked mighty pleased.
"Not yet." She replied and Jane stated that they were in. Frankie and Nina also immediately said yes. Andrea and Lucinda said they would have to think about it. But this didn't come as a surprise as they always took their time and Jane knew that they liked to spend some time together.
Too many docs working shifts in this room, Jane thought as she looked at Angie who also said that she couldn't tell now. It depended on the hospitals schedule. And when it came to the holy days, nobody wanted to work. Jane realized how all of them had worked the holy days so far, not minding because being single. Except for Andrea and Lucinda maybe.
"We should all kick their assess and say that it's our turn." She said and earned lots of nods.
"Well, you can start Jane. Since being a pilot, you never had a holy day off."
"I don't have to work holy days anymore." Jane said absentmindedly because the pizza deliverer rang the bell.
"Oh, how so? Are you retiring?" Frankie teased her.
Now the cat seemed to be out of the bag already and Maura explained that Jane was taking up a job as a teacher at the academy. Frankie almost spilled his beer and Jane understood why. Not even she had ever believed that she would stop flying unless she was blind or unable to walk.
"Yeah. I'm still with the same airline. Earning a little bit less money now of course. But still more than you little brother." She teased him. Once Frankie would be a detective he would get a raise, but still not reach her salary level. It didn't matter at the end and Jane walked to the door to get their food.
Money had surprisingly never been a topic between Maura and Jane despite Maura clearly being born rich and earning a lot in her job. Jane wasn't so far behind with her salary. But the thing was, that the house was theirs. There were no credits, no leasing fees, nothing. Only the expenses for daily life and the bills for maintenance. It left them a lot to live from. And when it came to the costs they always shared.
They had one account where each left a sum each month and whenever there was something to pay for like groceries or stuff, they took the money out of their joint account and had the rest for their free disposition.
So; it was still possible for each to invite the other on a date of their own money, which had been important for Jane. It felt better than just taking the money from their joint account. It just had to be this way if it came to her. Or for example gifts. What was the fun to give a gift for which Maura had paid her own share. It just didn't make sense.
After handing out the pizzas she sat back next to the doc and they munched on the food, talking about life in general. But with three doctors and two police officers, plus an attorney in the room the conversation kept going back to the same topics: medicine and law enforcement. Jane giggled. She loved to listen to their stories and exchanges and just lent back and enjoyed before the game continued after finishing dinner.
