Jane. I made you some healthy sandwiches for lunch." Maura said while handing her a paper bag. Jane was busy balancing her shiny new briefcase – a gift from Maura – in one hand and the keys and coffee mug in the other. She caught a brief smile from Brian who was sitting at the breakfast bar, eating, yes eating Janes forbidden cereals.

She couldn't help but give him a wink while letting Maura push the paper bag under her arm. "Maur, this is not going to work." She protested but the doc wouldn't hear it. Hence, Jane had a rough way to her car in the garage until she was able to dump her belongings onto the back seat.

It was her first day at the academy and she felt nervous. How on earth would she handle the students? She must have been out of her mind agreeing to this, she thought while walking into a classroom full of expectant eyes.

She placed her briefcase onto the desk and quickly cleared her throat while scanning the room. Then she introduced herself and tried a reassuring smile. Some of the students already looked bored. She briefly remembered herself sitting in one of the benches a few years ago and smiled genuinely remembering how she had felt.

Bored to death to be honest she thought recalling how she hadn't been able to connect the classes to being a pilot. It all seemed such useless information at that time.

"Okay." She said and let herself down to the desk, facing the class. "I know that you are wondering why you have to learn statics if you want to be a pilot. I know because I did too." She began, feeling the attention slowly turning towards her. These were all young people who were eager to get into a cockpit and Jane made a mental note to organize something. They needed to see, to feel she thought as she began connecting the dots for the students. By the end of the class, they were all giddy and excited. She found it refreshing to put in some of her crazy stories and make them laugh.

The students literally refused to leave when the bell rang. There were so many questions and Jane had so many stories to underline the dry subject.

She sat onto a bench in the courtyard for lunch and texted with Maura. Brian was still sitting in his bed with Maura beside him. She had made him some sandwiches with whole bread and lettuce. Hell, even Jane scrunched up her nose when she heard what she had made for Brian. When unpacking her own she scrunched up her nose even more, thinking about pulling some lettuce out of the bread. But being a nice wife, she left it in the sandwich and took a bite.

R&I

She was humming when she drove home. It had been a good day and the students loved her already. Now she new that it had been the right decision and she was happy. Instead of driving home immediately she made a detour to stop at Barney's. Fond memories became alive as she entered the small shop where her dad had bought her the first model kit.

Barney greeted her, recognizing her immediately. After some chit chat Jane walked the aisles and decided for two model kits. A car and a plane. She added some glue and other stuff to her basket and walked out with a grin.

It was raining again. The perfect weather to stay in and do some modelbuilding she thought as a small meow startled her. She quickly glanced around hearing the meow again and again until she spotted a black baby cat. Its fur was wet despite of sitting under a bench along the busy street. Jane glanced around some more before returning her eyes to the baby. "Have you lost your mum?" she asked, slowly approaching the shy cat. She could see that its eyes were still blue. The cat couldn't be older than four weeks she thought and perched down to stroke it. The cat was shivering and obviously hungry.

After another glance she asked some people if they knew whom the cat belonged to. But no one knew. She grabbed the cat and sat it into the backseat of her car to dry. She walked the perimeter to see if there were more or its mother. But there was nothing.

She sighed, hesitating then glancing into her car to see the baby sleep. "Its adoption week." She murmured with a smile as she hopped into her car and drove home.

In order to spare her a second walk to the car she put the sleeping cat into the shopping basket, grabbed her briefcase and balanced everything into the kitchen where Maura glanced at her questioningly.

The cat stretched and meowed, still hungry. With a daring leap she sprung onto the kitchen counter and Jane laughed. You're a little devil she stated and stroke his drying fur. "Oliver, meet Maura. Maura meet Oliver." Jane laughed at Maura's smirk.

Jane noticed a shadow passing by the door, assuming that it was Brian. He must have gotten curious she mused. She busied herself with taking a low bowl out of the cupboard and filled it with milk. Oliver who had been lifted from the counter carefully by Maura sniffed cautiously and then began to drink greedily while Jane explained how she had found him all alone in the rain on the street. She didn't tell Maura thought about the presents.

She simply grabbed her basket and walked upstairs to shower and change. But first she would drop a little something in Brian's room. The boy was sitting at his usual spot, his face hanging. But Jane felt that he was pretending and hiding. He was growing fond of his new home and the couple. Jane could feel it.

Not wanting to make him feel uncomfortable she just left the basket on the floor next to his bed, then left with a wink. She had also added a chocolate bar to it. Then she went to shower and change.

She was surprised finding him at the dinner table upon returning downstairs. Maura shot her a questioning smile and she shrugged. Jane told Maura about her first day and Brian ate in silence. They had added a desk to his room before moving him in.

It was the third surprise of the day, when she glanced up from her plans of the plane to find the boy with the basket in the doorway.

"Hey." She smiled and pulled the chair from Maura's desk closer. He sat on it and Jane shifted her stuff away to make space for the model. She wasn't surprised when he brought the model kit of the plane to light and meticulously placed everything else onto the desk with a questioning look.

"Okay. Let's see. It's been a while since I've done that. But we'll figure this out together." She said with a smile. He nodded slightly. Jane knew that Maura had gone to sleep early. The last days had been emotionally draining for her.

Jane took the knife and cautiously cut the box of the model kit open. She pulled out the instruction sheet and the parts and laid them out. "Do you want to unpack them. It's always good to start by looking at the plan and the parts."

He nodded again and pulled the parts out of the plastic bag. Jane acted as if it was perfectly normally that he didn't spoke. She explained and showed him how to cut the parts out of its grid and how to prepare them. Then she cut some more parts for him to prepare them before assembly. She watched in silence as he slowly assembled the parts until the cockpit was finished.

Something in her heart stirred and she felt happy to be able to teach and help him. She felt proud at his work, and he must have felt her notions because he suddenly turned at her with a grin.

She ruffled her hand through his hair without thinking. And he didn't pull back but smiled on, before cautiously moving into her arms. She silently pulled him closer and nestled her head against his forehead. She was tempted to leave a soft kiss there but decided that it would probably better not to.

When she looked towards the door, she found Maura smiling at them. The doc left as quickly as she had come, scared to disturb the boy. Jane and Brian spend thirty more minutes at the desk until the cockpit was glued to the outer shell. Then they stood. Brian motioned and she didn't understand. Yet he didn't speak but began packing up the stuff. Jane put her hand softly over his.

"I think its fine to leave it on the desk. We are going to continue tomorrow anyways."

The boy looked panicked and pointed to Maura's desk which was clean. Jane laughed softly. "She's used to it. I always leave my chaos on the desk. Don't worry." She said and ruffled through his head once more, wondering if he was ever going to speak and if when.

She turned off the light and walked him to his room. "Is it okay if I tuck you in?" she asked, and he nodded again. "You're safe now." She whispered while pulling the cover over his body. "We are going to take good care of you. I can't promise that we are perfect though. We never had kids. So maybe we'll make mistakes. But I want you to know that you can come to us whenever you need, okay buddy?"

She thought that she had overdone it, when his eyes widened in shock. But then she felt him take her hand and pull her closer. She sat on the bed and felt him hug her again. His words were silent, almost not audible when he whispered a Thank you to her ear. She felt the wetness of his tears and pulled him closer. "You're welcome buddy." She muttered touched. Her own tears threatening to fall while she softly rubbed his back.
