Korsak sat at the dining room table in Maura's and Janes home glancing at the small family that was sitting in front of him. He could sense that there had been some sort of disagreement or fight between the adults and wondered what it had been about. Maura was wearing a pout and Janes face showed concern. The little boy, Brian, sat nervously and Korsak could feel his hand fidgeting under the table until Jane reached out to hold one.

He had no idea what was going on but had rushed over after hearing the distress in the pilots voice. Korsak had taken an instant liking on the woman when Maura presented them to each other for the cold case. She had been of a great help despite not being a detective and he had come to like the couple during the encounters at the dirty robber and the wedding at the cruise ship. It was an understatement to say that he was worried about the couple. Yet he didn't understand why Maura was mad at Jane?

She was such an attentive and caring person. He watched them with a raised eyebrow until Jane brought his attention back to her by clearing her throat. There was a pile of papers she quickly shoved across the table towards him. And he picked the first one up. There was what he recognized as the result of a DNA test.

His eyes scanned the page thoroughly and he hitched a silent breath when reading the last paragraph. Seeing as to how Maura and Brian looked so much alike, he wasn't surprised to find out that they were related. But that Dr. Maura Isles was the daughter of the ice pick murderer was coming quite as a shock to him.

He felt the boys scared eyes resting on him as he grabbed for some pictures showing Brian and Maura at various ages and glanced at the doc who was chewing her lips. He could tell that she had had no clue about their existence and gave her a reassuring nod wondering if in her surrounding people had gotten killed too. Just like in Brian's. He made a mental note to check for it before picking up Brians drawing.

He immediately recognized the face as Paddy Doyle's and he could tell by Janes shifting in her seat that she knew that he had an idea who they were dealing with. Now it was Korsaks turn to clear his throat, cautiously gauging Maura's reaction while saying his name. Everybody knew that he was a mob boss and Jane gasped silently while Maura stood and left the room.

Brian glanced at Jane in fear, but the brunette gave him a soft smile. Korsak could only wonder about the strength of this woman and was thankful to have her on board. "I'm going to talk to her." She silently said, meaning Maura who had gone upstairs. The boy stared at him. His eyes were challenging and defensive at the same time.

Korsak who had never been good with kids, was glad that Oliver chose this moment to jump into his lap with a loud purr.

"Hey boy." He greeted the little black cat with a smile. He was bad with kids yes, but he was good with animals. Maura had told him about their addition to the family. "You adopted him?" he said, hoping to break the ice between him and the boy. Brian seemed to be warming up when seeing that Oliver trusted the big old detective.

"He lost his parents." He mumbled shyly and Korsak smiled sadly. He knew all about cats and dogs being left out on their own when people didn't want them anymore but didn't say a word about it.

"Maura told me that you are into modelbuilding." He changed the subject, wondering how things were going upstairs. The boy hesitated before getting off his chair. A few minutes later he returned with the half-finished plane.

Korsak took it from him as if it was a treasure. There was a sting in his heart when he thought that he had missed out on this part of his stepson's life. The boy slightly touched his arms, sensing his sadness. Their eyes met for a moment and then Brian slipped into his arms as if seeking protection. Maura had already told him that Brian had a way of seeking protection with Jane. And Korsak was surprised to be chosen for this honor too. Maybe it was because of his appearance.

He pulled the boy a tad closer and smiled at him. "Are you going to help us?" the boy asked and Korsak nodded through the knot in his throat. "Of course."

"I don't want him to hurt Jane." He whispered and Korsak nodded again.

"And I don't want him to kill more people." The boy continued as if wanting to protect his father from himself. At the beginning he had been scared that police would lock his father up. But he had done some hard thinking and come to the conclusion that it might be the safest for him.

Korsak knew that the boy had no idea what he was asking of him but promised to do his best. At least it was honest. It somehow felt wrong to lie to Brian who nodded in understanding.

He was far too mature for his age Korsak thought when hearing a knock to the door. He watched Dusty and another woman walk in wondering why they hadn't locked the door after all. Dusty stopped glancing around. Then they greeted each other, already knowing each other from the wedding and other occasions.

Brian greeted them as well. They too had met twice before, and he returned being a kit when taking the opportunity to show Dusty and her girlfriend his plane. Jane came down the stairs to everybody's relief and greeted their friends.

"It was such a nice evening. We thought we might come by to say hi. We were doing a little hike." Dusty said and her girlfriend hitched a breath. "No hike. It was just a walk." She replied offended punching Dusty.

"If it includes climbing several hills, I call it a hike." Dusty replied and everybody laughed, releasing some tension. "Especially if I have to carry a backpack." Dusty continued and slid the mentioned object of her shoulders. She opened it slowly and pulled out a model kit. "There you go. We thought you might like it." She said as she handed the kit of another plane to Brian whose eyes gleamed of joy.

"For me?" he asked incredulously and everybody laughed again.

"Yes. Yours is almost done as Jane told us. So, we thought you might need some more."

The boy hopped around, opening the box and glancing inside. Korsak lifted his eyes to see Maura walking down the stairs and stopping behind Jane, gently putting one hand on the taller woman's shoulder.

Jane turned and gave her a loving look before putting her own hand over Mauras. Korsak sighed. At least that problem seemed to be solved. "As much as I would love to stay, I have to go and take care of things." He said while lifting from his chair. He needed to go back to the precinct. He needed to work out a plan to protect these wonderful people.

If Paddy had an eye on his kids, he doubtlessly knew that they were here with Jane. And as Brian had pointed out: Jane might be in danger. Maybe not right now, but she definitely was being watched by a mob boss and that was never good.
