Jane turned her phone in her hand. Maura hadn't texted nor called since she had left the house. She felt like hanging in the air which was very unsettling. As she didn't want to ask herself if Maura was serious about the breakup for the umptieth time she turned her attention to the young man sitting next to her. They were on the shuttle which was supposed to bring them to the perimeter of the airfield, where their plane was parked.

It was impossible to oversee how uncomfortable and nervous he felt. Jane knew that he had just graduated from the academy, with her being his teacher and wondered if the discomfort came from the fact that it was his first commercial flight – his first day on the job so to speak – or if it was coming from the fact that his former teacher was going to be his captain for the day.

"You're going to be fine." She told him with a reassuring smile. She almost felt sorry for him, remembering the time when she had faced her first flight. The prep of the flight had gone smoothly though, and she was convinced that she could trust him to take the first leg. His smile was weak, and Jane chuckled, patting his shoulder.

"Just take a deep breath. We have perfect flying conditions today. The plane just passed a service and checkup. There is nothing to worry about." Jane said as the shuttle took a halt next to the plane.

The sun was reflecting on its clean surface and Jane felt the same excitement and joy she had always felt when seeing a plane ready for the journey. She flipped down her pilots as they stepped out of the shuttle and towards the plane. She couldn't wait to hear the roaring of the jet engines and feel the power of the device when chasing down the runway.

She felt some of the confidence that she had lost over her relationship problems coming back to her. It was great. Yet she missed Maura and Brian. And she had only left them the previous night. She took a deep breath before pushing all thoughts aside to focus on her work. Wasn't that why she had been looking forward to this day in the first place? To give her brain a break.

Her plan worked perfectly well until she stepped out of the plane after the last flight. It had been a good day. The young pilot growing into his new job and Jane had loved seeing the development in him. It had led her to the conclusion that she liked her job as a teacher because it had shown her the impact of a solid foundation of knowledge on the practical side.

Seeing both made her wonder if she shouldn't ask for more than teaching. Maybe she could do the theory at the academy and watch the pilots grow on the outside at the same time. Not wanting to intrude at Peters again she opted for the hotel at the airport while these thoughts tumbled through her mind.

It was only after checking in that she dared to check her phone. She was almost deceived when there wasn't one single text or call from Maura. Her heart stung at the thought that Maura might be serious about breaking up. The worst thing to her was not knowing what was going to happen and where this all came from.

She usually prided herself of reading people well, but to her Maura was a total mystery. She tried not to panic but stay calm as she put her phone aside to take a long soothing bath. Focus on what you have, she thought but it didn't help. Her mind kept going back to Maura and Brian and she wondered if she should call. Maybe the blonde would at least let her talk to Brian.

Determined to find out she reached for her phone after settling onto the bed after the bath. Her fingers were slightly shaking as she hit the call button to Maura's number. There was another sting in her heart when Maura didn't pick up. She was almost angry but controlled her emotions not to throw the phone across the room.

Anger and sadness raged inside of her, and she decided to take a drink at the bar to cool down.

R&I

It was only half an hour later, when she sat at the counter, nursing a blue moon when a tall woman sat down next to her. They had exchanged several glances over the last 15 minutes when the woman was still sitting on the other side of the bar.

"Hey." The woman said with a cheeky smile which came with a flirtatious look. Jane replied with a weary smile as she took a sip from her beer. To her own surprise she wasn't interested at all. "Hey." She replied after swallowing the swig of beer. She could see that the other woman had hopes. She could feel the interest and the opportunity. But even if things were not going well between Maura and her, she wasn't willing to give in to the flirting the woman now showed.

Instead, she asked for the bill and got ready to leave. "I'm sorry." She apologized while getting up from the bar stool. She pointed to the ring on her finger and gave the woman a friendly smile. The deception on the woman's face was clear, but Jane couldn't care less. The player in Jane was gone. There was only one woman for her and that was Dr. Maura Isles.

So, Maura had spoiled her for the rest of the women. Yet, the doc seemed to be serious about ending things. Jane mused that if Maura was still interested in their marriage, she would at least have spoken to her about taking a break.

Jane closed the door firmly behind her and locked it before turning to the lonely bed in her hotel room. She checked the phone again to find several missed calls from her mother and Peter. But still nothing from the doc.

Feeling weary, she rubbed her eyes and sat down to the edge of the bed as tears began to form in her eyes. She didn't want to cry nor to give up. If she was quick, she might be able to pick Brian up from school the next day. They had hired a nanny as both usually had to work long hours. Jane wondered how her first day with Brian had gone and if the boy was okay.

And what would Paddy Doyle say? Was she being a target to him now that she obviously had left the house and hurt Maura? But how had she hurt her? She hadn't, had she? It had been the other way round. And if there should have been something she had done wrong, Maura would have been supposed to talk it out like an adult.

Jane felt desperate. "What a fucking mess!" she mumbled as she called Peter back to give him notice that she was okay. Well physically if you ignored the constant knot in her stomach. Rolling her eyes, she acknowledged to herself that she was everything but okay. But Jane Rizzoli wasn't the one to say so. Yet she didn't have to because Peter had known her long enough to read between the lines.

But she declined his offer to come back to stay at their house or have a beer somewhere. The day had been long enough and she had to teach the next day.

"Just call me if you can't sleep." He offered before they hung up. Jane was about to dial her mother's number but then aborted the call, thinking that she was really not in the mood to get a lecture from her. Instead, she flipped the light switch and crawled into bed after shedding her cloths.
