A/N: This chapter has officially been updated as of May 28 2021. This was my first (and currently still only) Class of the Titans fanfic, hope you enjoy! My writing style has changed a bit over the years, but I'm really excited to get back into this story. The first 8 chapters are being redone and then everything from there on is new.
Chapter 1: Discoveries
I was sitting on the hood of my car staring at the stars. The moon was full tonight and I basked in the glow. It seemed to be my one constant. No matter what crazy stuff was happening in my life, the moon was always there to greet me like an old friend, watching over me and keeping me sane. Ridiculous how this thing, no bigger than a thumb nail as it sat in the sky, offered so much comfort and beauty.
And then suddenly I could feel someone's eyes on me.
"Who's there and what the hell do you want?" Antagonizing whoever it was probably wasn't the best idea, but sometimes if your bark is big enough you don't have to bite. At 16 and 5'7" with pale skin, a heart shaped face, killer grey eyes, and hair as dark as night, I wasn't exactly intimidating to the kind of people lurking around this time of night. Don't worry, I had the bite to back it up just in case.
They say curiosity killed the cat, I thought as I walked around my car, tentatively looking at the buildings around me, but satisfaction brought it back. And then I rounded the corner. Maybe I should've done without the curiosity this time. What I didn't expect was the fact that there might actually be a giant red . . . well, giant waiting for me. And then the most clichéd thing happened. It tried to step on me.
"Hey, buddy, watch where you put that thing! I'm down here, doorknob!" I was furious. The giant tried to step on me again, but I quickly dodged backwards, jumping to kick off the building and swing my leg to kick him across the face. I went with the momentum and completed the turn to land facing the giant. I waited patiently for him to fight back. He rushed at me and I stepped to the side. Suddenly I was lifted off the ground and I felt claws digging into my arms. "What the hell? I was kind of in the middle of something important!"
"Well, hello to you, too. Climb up onto her back and we'll get you to Olympus. I'm Hermes, by the way." He was kind of scrawny and was wearing a white toga and shoes with wings on them.
"Hermes? Okay. Sure, sure. Let's just get to Olympus." I mean at this point what were my other options? Hang there or fall to my death? So, I climbed up onto the . . . well, it looked like a hippogriff but that makes me sound crazy, so the . . . thing's . . . back and lay down to enjoy the ride. I closed my eyes thinking maybe when I woke up, I'd be curled up in the backseat of my car and this would all be an extremely confusing and disorienting dream.
The landing jostled me awake, and I realized we were in the middle of a school soccer field, complete with turf, white lines, and bleachers. I slid off the . . . thing, and onto the grass, for once keeping my mouth shut. It didn't last long as my curiosity slowly overpowered the hesitancy and unease I felt at this whole situation.
"So… Hermes. What's going on? What is this place? No offense, but school isn't exactly my thing. It's hard enough to hang around there when I'm supposed to be, let alone for fun."
"Hardy har har," Hermes replied. "All things come to those who wait," he muttered as he led me through the school to a janitor's closet. He simply gestured to the knob and I noticed the odd shape above it. No way. I'd found that necklace beside a dumpster and simply thought it was too pretty to be thrown away so carelessly. I'd only kept it because of the initial and crescent moon on the back. And even that had been a stretch as I'd decided I was going to pawn it first thing tomorrow morning. It wasn't worth waiting for someone to steal it.
I pressed the necklace against the door and watched as it miraculously opened. I wasn't one to normally put much stock in fate but more and more it seemed I may be wrong.
And then I stepped into the room and found it to be nothing special. Simply a janitor's closet with a cleaning cart and extra supplies. Jokes on me, I guess.
"What now? There's nothing in here."
"Well, duh, you're supposed to turn on the light. How can you see?"
"Seeing in the dark kind of comes naturally to me," I said absentmindedly, as I turned on the light. All of a sudden, there was this what seemed like a glowing blue wall in front of me and Hermes walked right through it. What the hell? I shrugged, got nothing to lose, and followed. It was still dark on the other side seeing as it was the early hours of the morning. But I could see the grand hallway perfectly and was in awe. How could something like this be hidden inside a janitor's closet?
Unfortunately, my question wouldn't get answered until morning – or I guess later morning - as Hermes led me to a couch and gave me a pillow and blankets that seemed to appear out of nowhere. I laid down on the couch, unsure how I would be able to sleep as I gazed around the room, marveling at the elegance of the architecture. This had by far been the weirdest day of my life, and there had been some weird ones let me tell you. But it seemed my brain had other plans, as my eyelids soon grew heavy and I passed into a deep dreamless sleep.
When Hermes woke me up the next morning, there was an older lady with him, but even though her hair was grey, she still had that young twinkle in her eye.
"I'm Hera, Selena. Welcome to Olympus. I hope you slept well?"
"Yes, I was very comfy. I just have to ask; what on earth am I doing here?" I knew that I was probably a mess because I had just gotten up, but I needed to know if this was like a kid's shelter or something, or if maybe my parents had all of a sudden decided to care what happened to me.
Hera smiled gently, "All in good time, my dear. We just have to wait for a few more people, and then all will be explained. In the meantime, you are safe and feel free to look around. Once the others are here, you will be shown to your dorm."
With that the two of them walked away and I decided to just wander around and hope to come across a bathroom or something. Luckily enough, I found something even better. Well, kind of. Aphrodite's room. She was more than happy to help me "doll up" for the day – her words not mine. She kept trying to get me into a dress, and that wasn't going to happen anytime soon, if ever. She was lovely, but I shuddered at the thought of running into her again. A girl can only fake her way through a conversation about skin care so often. So, freshened up, I wandered around. Luckily, I'm pretty gifted with directions. Once I find my way around a place once, I very rarely get lost. So I took my time, admiring the art through the hallways.
When I finally found my way back, there were 3 others with Hera. I looked them over. The one girl seemed really sporty and athletic and she held herself with a proud stance, her name was Atlanta, I learned. I immediately liked her. The one guy was huge. Not fat, but ripped. And probably at least 6' 2". His name was Herry. The last was another guy, probably around 6', and seemed pretty average. You could tell he was in shape and had muscle, but you could also tell he didn't work out like Herry. He was Jay.
"Selena, just in time. I was about to explain why you are all here."
"Perfect."
We started to walk around once again, but I didn't really pay attention this time, too focused and absorbed in Hera's words.
"This is Olympus High School. But this, this is a special part of the school will you will learn about your destinies."
"A school?" Herry sounded so surprised.
"Run by Gods?" Atlanta's voice was incredulous.
"What do you mean our destinies?" Jay wasn't too sure about this by the sound of it.
More and more this was making absolutely no sense to me.
"Oh my, so many questions," Hera raised a hand to stop us, "Four more of you will be arriving soon, but you should begin right away. There is no time to waste."
Hera led us around the building, with no further explanation might I add. The four of us all seemed to be in a stunned silence, simply trying to wrap our heads around what she had said.
As Hera opened a pair of doors, we heard a woman saying, "You should lay off the donuts, Hercules, your getting soft." Then came the thud as she slammed his hand down on the table.
"Children," Hera said, "I'd like you to meet Artemis and Hercules." She stepped aside as we walked up to them.
"Hello!" Artemis greeted us brightly, shaking Atlanta's hand.
"Uh, hi," Atlanta responded quietly, seemingly both interested and nervous.
"Hey hey, look at you!" Hercules put Herry in a choke hold and brought him onto the couch.
"Why are all the Gods of Mount Olympus here, in a school?" Jay interjected. It wouldn't have been my first question, but it was a good one all the same.
"It's safer for us here," Hera replied, "It also keeps us closer to you, so we can do what we can to protect you from Cronus."
"Cronus?" I finally piped up. "If we're going with this whole 'Gods are real' schtick, he's supposed to be locked up for eternity, isn't he?"
"I can assure you," Hera said, her voice calm but her eyes like daggers, "it is no schtick. This is real." With a wave of her hand, a projection appeared. Holy smokes, ok, I'm a believer. "For 4000 years Cronus has been imprisoned in the underworld, but when the planets aligned on New Year's Eve, he was able to draw on the cosmic energy and escape."
"Our clock at home stopped at midnight," Jay pointed out. More and more this sounded less and less crazy.
"For a second, thanks to Cronus, all time stood still," Artemis said.
"Just long enough for him and some giants to vamoose," Hercules added.
"So, what does this have to do with us?" I asked. My interest and curiosity were definitely piqued, but that still doesn't change the fact we were just kids and this was a conflict amoung immortal beings who had been around since the dawn of time.
"You have to stop him," Artemis said, as if she was amazed we hadn't figured it out yet.
"Stop him from what?" Atlanta asked, much more hesitant than she had been.
"From destroying the world," Hera said.
"But no pressure, right," I muttered.
"Cronus used to rule the earth," she went on as if I hadn't said anything, "He was king of Gods and mortals. He wants to rule everything again and, well, let's just say he's not a very benevolent ruler."
"You expect us to save the world?" Jay asked.
"You got it," Hercules said, like it was the simplest thing in the world.
"It is your destiny. The Oracle has seen this. You represent the new generation of heroes," Hera said, "Descendants of the great Jason, Selene, Artemis, and Hercules." I'd heard of the others, but had no idea who Selene was. I must not have hidden my confusion very well because I saw a mischievous twinkle appear in Hera's eye.
"I'm related to you?" Herry asked incredulously, looking at Hercules.
"Well, think of me as your great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandpa. Let's see what you're made of, my boy," Hercules answered, getting up and slapping Harry on the back. With that the tests began.
"Nobody can lift that much weight," Jay said referring to the insane amount of weights Hercules had thrown on the bar.
"Herry," was all he said in reply. Herry went and picked it up no problem. I felt my jaw drop.
"This is too easy!" Hercules threw another bar at him, throwing him off for a second before holding them both high over his head, one in each hand.
"Wow," was all I could think to say, totally dumbstruck.
"Your turn," Artemis said, turning to Atlanta. By the look on Atlanta's face, she did not want to be next. And I couldn't blame her.
Atlanta started running around the track, until Artemis called out, "Okay, Atlanta, open it up." Then she flew at blinding speed, before hurdles popped up out of nowhere, and then discs flew at her. I watched in amazement as she flipped over and around them, before catching one and running over to Artemis, only slightly out of breath, and saying, "You know, you could have told me things were going to shoot at me."
"Pop quiz. Nice job, Atlanta," she responded proudly, "Very impressive."
"I can't do anything like that," Jay said to Hera.
"You're the leader Jay, their fate rests in your hands, as does the fate of the world." Whoa, heavy. This is already so much to put on a group of teenagers, no need to add to it, I thought, a little bitter that the goddess seemed to have no limit on the amount she laid on his shoulders.
"This is too much," Jay said. I didn't blame the guy; after all he was only a teenager.
"It is a lot for one night. You all need to get some rest. You must be tired. We have a place for you to stay."
"What about our parents?" Jay asked, "My folks must be wondering where I am."
"Don't worry," Hera said, "It's all taken care of."
"And what about me," I said, speaking up, "do I get a test?" I had a few hidden talents up my sleeve, but I wasn't sure about how on earth they could be showcased. Instead, Hera just looked at me for a second, and then sighed.
"You're a little bit different. You are a direct descendant of Selene, the Titan Goddess of the moon." I heard Artemis let out a humph. I had always associated Artemis with that title, but I suppose before the gods and goddesses someone had to hold that position. I'd never really thought about it. "The Titan's have long since left Olympus," she continued. "As such, you're somewhat of a wild card." And with that she left. Well thanks for the boat load of information, I thought sarcastically. 'Wildcard' what does that even mean? What's going on here?
As we walked to the dorms, no one said much because we were all lost in our thoughts. What Hera had said actually made sense to me, for some reason. I had always loved the moon and the stars. I was a night owl, so to speak, always up late and I felt like a vampire when it was too sunny out, constantly wearing sunglasses. An unfortunate incident in a grade 9 science class showed I always knew the phases of the moon and tides which, until then, I had thought normal for everyone. Not to mention, I could see incredibly well in the dark, and I could basically blend in with the night when I wanted too. The more I thought about it the more it made sense. And I was kind of starting to scare myself.
As we neared the dorm, Jay spoke up, "This is nuts. They've made a mistake. I'm not who they think I am. I'm not a hero!"
"I don't know, Jay," Atlanta responded, "You saved me from that giant."
"Yeah, but that was-"
"Instinct?" Atlanta continued hesitantly.
"Sounds like things are starting to add up to me," I added. "For all of us."
"Look, you guys know who you are and what you can do. Atlanta, you're fast and you know how to hunt. Herry, you're strong. Selena, I don't know how but great that this is making sense for you. Me, I'm nothing."
"Hey," I said, "Don't be so hard on yourself."
"Yeah," Herry agreed, "Those Gods back there must know what they're doing."
"Here's the dormitory," Atlanta effectively changed the subject. "Who's this Athena that's supposed to take care of us?"
"She's the Goddess of war," Jay supplied.
"Ouch, seriously? Hey, how do you know all this stuff?" Herry questioned.
"My mom's Greek." As if that wasn't enough of a reason to believe this may be true. "Listen, you guys go, I need to take a walk. I'll see you later." And with that he turned and walked away.
