Morning, evening, and (over the years) every hour in between was the same. They stood outside the barracks and the guards counted them in German. The exact number varied, but the routine stayed the same.

Hogan did not think of it all the time, but there were moments it was impossible to forget. "All the men here are volunteers," he sometimes reminded himself, and he listened to the numbers more carefully. "They're all here because they believe we can do something good by it, no matter the hardships."

Hogan could be arrogant, no denying, but those moments were utterly humbling.
