Chapter 1

Kagome

Kagome sighed heavily as she steered her beat up Ford F150 into the car park, the thing sputtered a moment as she turned the engine off. She hugged the steering wheel placing her head against the cool plastic praying the thing didn't give out anytime soon.

She hadn't the money to get it repaired or ever afford a new truck but driving around her dad's old 2005 truck was taking its toll and the poor thing had seen better days.

"Just a little bit longer, please" she prayed as she kicked open the broken door and dragged herself out from the worn seat. She grabbed her phone, a old era iphone she had bought second hand to listen to some music while on her way to work.

Stretching her sore limbs she shuffled her tired body towards a run down budget hotel, the complex was surrounded by chain link fence and a huge sign hung on the fence saying 'No Tresspassing, Demolition in progress'

The building was indeed up for demolition but Kagome had taken a contract as a guardian for the building to watch the place and to scare off delinquent riff raff and drug addicts. The place was incredibly cheap for her to live in and she got to live in the manager apartment that was on site rather than living in one of the smaller bedrooms.

She opened the weathered door and the smell of damp hit her, she rolled her eyes as she cranked up the heat but the heating took a while to kick in so the apartment smelt of damp and mold.

Kagome knew she was not expected to maintain the building so until the demolition came in, she could happily wait it out and keep a roof over her head.

After filling the kettle to make a hot cup of tea she headed for the shower, a long hot bath was what she needed but she had to get to bed for work in the morning. A quick shower later she was sitting on her double bed towel drying her hair and sipping her hot tea, she managed to sneak some tea bags from her job as a receptionist at the hotel.

She went in the mornings to prepare the breakfast bar and carefully snagged a few little breakfast bits like tea bags and jam, making jam sandwiches where not a great way of eating but it kept her fed and she saved more money this way.

Kagome finished her tea and fired up her little notebook laptop to check out any jobs that where available to work around her schedule. She browsed for a bit finishing her tea but closed it finding nothing promising.

Laying on her bed the mattress squeaked loudly, and the springs stuck in her back, she pulled the towel from her face and sighed even louder. It was not much but it was home.

Sometime later she shot awake to her phone alarm blurring out in the dark room, she checked it sleepily to see the 5am glaring back at her. She had only slept for 5 hours, Kagome sat up finding her body sore but she rolled out of bed and began to get ready for work.

Later her Ford truck pulled up a little ways from the hotel, she couldn't have people seeing her driving such a vehicle near such a luxurious hotel, it would surely get back to her manager and she was expected to uphold the business name, she just thanked god that they provided her uniform.

Kagome strolled into work, the large doors where opened by a doorman dressed in a long red coat. "Good morning Kagome how are you today?" he said shining her a smile.

"Good morning Frank, I'm fine just heading in" she smiled back, the older man was always so kind to her. She felt important when he opened the door for her, it was his job but yer.

"Your boss was looking for you, said to meet him in his office" he shouted as she headed for the reception desk. She stopped quickly and spun around "Did he say what he wanted?" she asked, deer in headlight eyes. It was never good if your boss wanted to see you in their office, it never was.

Innocent Frank just shook his head "I'm afraid not sorry" he smiled and wished her a nice day.

Kagome's legs suddenly turned to jelly as she went behind the counter, another receptionist was there. Meg her name was but Kagome didn't really interact much with the woman as they where on rotating shifts. 'What is she doing in now?' she thought as she headed for her boss' office.

With a shaky hand Kagome rasped the door praying he was not in his office but a sound "Come in!" from the other side made her bite her lip.

She popped her head around the door to see her middle-aged boss Mark sat in his chair, he swiveled his chair around to face her.

"Please Kagome have a seat" he gestured to the empty chair opposite, Kagome placed her bag on the floor and sat down facing her boss. She tried to act calm but her she clamped her clammy hands in her lap and watched the man sorting through a few folders till he found the right one.

"Kagome, there had been an allegation made to me that you have been stealing things from this Hotel?" Kagome felt her stomach plunge through the floor, how had anybody seen her she was so careful. It was only the little jam's and milk cartons, barely pennies to these people.

"I…I…" she went to speak but he held up his hand to silence her "I'm sorry I have to do this but with such allegations made against you, I'm afraid we are going to have to let you go. I will need your name badge, uniform and pass card by the end of the day. We are a respectable hotel Kagome and we cannot have such things happen in our establishment" he explained as he filled out his file, he glanced back up at her.

"You may leave now" he said as he turned back towards his computer, the clacking of keys filled the room, but her heart pounded in her ears. Silently she raised herself from her chair and left the office heading back out into the front of reception.

Kagome didn't mutter a word as she passed the other receptionist who she realized was preparing the breakfast bar up front, she was working her shift at the hotel this morning.

Her chest constricted tightly, the tears threatening to fall any moment. "Heading out Kagome, I'll see you later" Frank said cheerfully as he opened the door for her, god he was oblivious sometimes as she attempted to smile at him but the tears started to fall and she quickly rushed past him shouting a goodbye.

With Kagome finally outside she was finally able to let herself go and huge tears blurred her vision, this was a good job and she needed the money. How could she fuck it up by taking such little things, who the fuck had reported her?

She swiped blindly at her tears, standing by a taxi that was pulled out front and the valet let someone out. Kagome breathed deeply trying to get herself under control, suddenly a loud pitched scream alerted her.

She looked up just in time to see a small child running across the street, she had long silver hair and bright golden eyes. An older woman was dashing after her into traffic, Kagome checked to her left as she spotted a huge truck barreling down the road.

Without even thinking she was already in the street scooping up the little girl, she curled her body around her small frame shielding her from the impact. Her barrier flared to life, a dome a purple sparking around her just as the truck hit and sent her flying with the child up into the air and dissolving her barrier.

Kagome felt the impact of metal and then the hard pavement on her back, she checked to find huge bright eyes gazing up at her from her chest and dropped back in relief.

Suddenly a shadow fell over her and she opened her eyes to find a tall young man staring down at her in disbelief. He knelt beside her as the young child was taking into the arms of the woman who was crying hysterically.

Kagome mind was foggy, but she found his appearance just as fascinating, long silver stands and huge golden eyes. He was beautiful, she smiled thinking he was an angel, he said something, but she could not hear him. The ringing in her ears was deafening.

The lack of sleep was catching up with her, she thought and a nice sleep right now felt so wonderful, he grabbed her shoulders harshly shaking her a little and Kagome stared up at this handsome creature.

'Just a little moment' she thought as her eyes fluttered closed and Kagome was finally lost to the darkness.
