So this is actually a fic over on my AO3 account! I've decided to single it out from the other pieces of its story and bring it over here, but if you want to read the events that lead up to Izuku and Emon being a wonderful father-daughter duo, it's in the series called "Parental Units of AU". This "series" is basically reader insert one-shots but there's plot in every one of them that connect to the other! In this part, we focus on Izuku's trials and errors with his own successor as well as how I imagine things would be when 1-A are pro Heroes. Happy reading!
It was a sunny day when her life turned upside down.
A fire had broken out in the apartments her family lived in, and while her family was able to get out safely, but there was a frantic mother a few apartments down. "Please!" She shrieked. "Please, he's just two!"
The world went white and her body started to move.
Afterwards, she was being scolded by some of the Heroes when there was a commotion. They all looked up to see...
"Deku!" Waterlog, a Rescue Hero, called with a wide grin. The Number One Hero grinned back, the sunlight catching his hair at just the right place, making Emon frown as she saw almost more grey hair than green. "You got here just in time. Ito-chan here was just going to explain why she ran into a burning building." Feeling herself flush as their attention turn towards her, she fiddled with her fingers. "Well?"
"I..." God, what was she going to say? She babysat Taz almost every day and would miss him if he died? That when she heard Mrs. Shinsou's screams, her heart felt like it was going to crush itself to death? That she couldn't stand the thought of just standing by and watching an innocent little boy die? "My body just... moved. before I could think."
She almost missed the glint in Deku's eyes as she was led away by her parents.
Successor.
Deku wanted her, the weird kid with an empath quirk she couldn't turn off, to be his successor. He wanted to give her his Quirk so it could continue it's main mission.
She wasn't sure if she was happy, excited, nervous or scared...
Emon groaned from where she laid on the grass, her muscles burning as she even thought about twitching. Deku just laughed and hualed her up, setting her on a bench before sitting beside her. "Everything hurts." she complained.
"I had to clean a completely trashed beach in ten months," he told her, eye sparkling in mirth. "Be glad I caught you before your 14th, otherwise we'd be in just the same rush."
"I have several regrets," she mumbled in her arm, making him laugh again.
"No wonder Toshi-san liked to tease me during training," he murmured, making her lift her arm up curiously.
"Toshi-san? Was he your mentor?" she asked, and it was like a complete 180 on his mood. Gone was the Hopeful Hero, replaced by a grieving man. She shivered and bit back a wave of tears as his sadness hit her, full force.
"He... he was more like a father," he replied, gaining a distant look. "He got a bad injury, one that was slowly killing him, and it's what made him start looking for a successor. Y'know, when we first met, I was in the middle of being killed by a villain? He showed up and saved me, but the villain got away and captured Ground Zero. I got to the scene, and when I saw that Kacchan had been taken hostage, I acted before I could think."
"Like me," she whispered, making him look at her with a rueful smile before reaching over and ruffling her brown ombre hair.
"Like you," he echoed before standing. "Alright, break time over. We still have three kilometers to do before lunch."
It was a sunny day when they met on the roof of some random high rise away from downtown.
When the teen finally got to where the Pro was waiting, he was looking out across the town, a wistful glean in his eyes disappearing as he turned towards her. "Emon, I'm glad you were able to make it."
"I-I am too, Deku-san," she said, a wave her nervousness hitting her like a truck, but what did he have to be nervous about...? "Why are we here?"
The man grinned and cupped his hands together, and a glow was seen coming from his palms. "Because, Ito Emon, it's time for you to inherit All for One. Your body can withstand the Quirk, and if I recall correctly, the UA entrance exam is a month away." A month to train...? That wasn't nearly enough time! Deku saw her face and laughed, pulling his hands apart and letting the glow fade. "I had no time to train before I took the exam," he told her, and, wow, ok, suddenly a month felt good.
"How..." her voice broke as her own nerves worked themselves up. "How does the transfer happen?"
If anything, his face grew mischievous as he reached up and pulled out... a hair? "In the great words of my mentor: Eat this!"
Finally, it was the day of the test, and she found herself going back to the rooftop where she had gotten One for All. For thirty minutes, she sat there by herself, looking at either her hands or the city's skyline, unsure of what to think. A thump from behind her made the teen turn, relaxing a bit as she saw it was Deku who had joined her.
"Deku-san," she greeted with a small smile.
"Emon, what are you doing up here so early?" he asked with his own grin, frowning as hers slid from her face.
She looked at her hand, seeing the foreign glow on her palm, heart pounding wildly in her chest as she slowly closed her hand. "I still don't think I'm worthy..." she whispered, and much to her surprise, he let out a laugh, causing her to look up at him.
"You know, I said that to my mentor too." he said, a fond look in his green eyes, and curiously enough, she didn't feel the normal wave of sadness she normally did whenever he talked about "Toshi-san". "You know what he said?"
Emon looked up, blue eyes wide as it registered what the Pro in front of her had just said. "You doubted yourself too...?" she whispered, noting the sad glint in his eye. He rarely talked about his mentor; all she knew was that, like him, he had been the Number One Hero when he was her age. "What did he say?"
"He said to me, 'Young Midoriya, you have earned this, whether you believed it or not. For months you have trained, and this is your reward.'. Looking back now, it was kinda cheesy, but it worked." There must've been doubt still on her face, because he hesitated before sitting beside her. "He gave me another bit of advice too. It was the words his own Mentor gave him when he inherited One for All." he started, putting his index fingers to the corner of his mouth and smiling widely; it looked a bit ridiculous, and it made her want to smile and laugh. "A hero should save others with a smile, to reassure them everything is going to be ok. And sometimes, all that matters is a good smile, even it's small and in the mirror to yourself."
"But..." she started, stopping herself as she flexed her hands. "But it doesn't... feel like my Quirk."
"It will," he promised, tone quiet. "From the moment you were able to call upon One for All, it became yours. Your power to use to save those who are in need." His words struck deep in her chest, resonating around her heart.
It's mine, she thought, once again staring at her glowing hands, though the glow was brighter than before, My power... my Quirk... "Thank you, Deku-san."
"You're welcome... now, you should be getting to UA. Testing starts in two hours and you want a good seat close to the front." at his words, she nodded and ran off. With a sigh, he turned his gaze upwards, mouth curving into a small smile.
The gave was easy to find; it was covered in reds, whites, yellows and blues, as well as all types of merchandise from adoring fans.
Gently, he knelt down and placed the marigold and pink carnation bundle by the headstone. Taking a deep breath, Izuku realized he was glad he didn't bring Emon with him; the grief he was feeling was still as jagged as that fateful day, and he didn't want to subject his protegee to that ever. Laying a hand on the ground, he let a tearful smile show as his voice shook with his next words.
"Hello Toshinori. It's been a long time since w-we've talked." his breath hitched, but he continued. "I found someone, a successor. "You'd really like her. She's so much like you..."
Sad ending is sad ;-;
