Hi, my name is Lia (pronounced Leah) Milligan and I am in desperate need for a job
My mom died of breast cancer, my dad is in jail for drug possession, and my sister refuses to talk to me
I was in school for a while but wasn't able to pay anymore so I got kicked out
I'm hoping that coming to Santa Cruz will help me get a fresh start
I'm walking around hoping to find a help wanted sign and the only one I see is in the window of a sandwich shop called "Beach City Grill"
I walk in and immediately notice two things
1. A beautiful painting on the back wall but it doesn't seem to be done yet
2. A really hot guy that's making sandwiches
He has a pink mohawk and is wearing a kilt and a funny shirt that says "Sorry I'm late I didn't want to come" on it and I can't help but laugh
"Oh look Priestly, someone actually thinks your shirt is funny" Says the red head
"Yeah haha Tish, real funny" Says Priestly
There are two pretty blonde girls behind the counter and the red head, Tish is waitressing
"What can I get you?" Asks one of the blondes who is behind the computer
The other blonde comes up to me
"Let me guess... you're here for a job?"
"Um yeah, how'd you know?" I ask hesitantly
"Oh just a hunch" She smirks at me
"Trucker! We have another stray!" Tish yells
An older man, must be Trucker, comes out and looks at me
"Hi I'm Trucker"
"I'm Lia and I need a job"
He just kinda stares at me for a moment
"You're hired"
"Um okay thanks"
"Woah woah woah Trucker, democracy remember?!"
"Okay, all in favor of hiring Lia raise your hand..."
Trucker, the blonde behind the computer, and Priestly have their hands up
"How about an interview" Asks the old lady in the back with a dog in her purse
"Yeah that's fine, shoot" I answer
"Okay..." Trucker starts
"Elvis, dead or alive?"
"Dead"
"Andy Coffman" Tish goes next
"Dead"
"Jerry Garcia" Trucker asks again
"Grateful and dead"
"Mariah Carey" Tish asks me
"Acting career..."
"No"
"Then alive" I smile
"Why'd you come to Santa Cruz?" Asks the old lady in the back
"Trying to get a fresh start" I say
"Are you a virgin?" The older man asks me
"Mr. Julius!" Trucker sounds annoyed
"No" I answer laughing "But I used to be"
Everyone looks pleased with my answers and I'm feeling hopeful
"Okay everybody, time to vote"
Everyone raises their hands, even the two customers in the back, Mr. Julius and Lucile and Bam Bam, her dog
I get introduced to everyone
The blonde behind the computer is Jen, the other blonde is Piper who is also new, and of course Trucker, Priestly, and Tish
I go behind the counter and work with Priestly and he shows me where everything is and how to make a good sandwich
"I really like your hair" I tell him
"Really? See at least someone here appreciates my hair!" He shouts toward Tish
"Priestly, we appreciate your hair just silently" Jen says
I laugh at Jen's comment and go back to training
"Is it for Breast Cancer Awareness month?" I ask Priestly
"Uh yeah, how'd you figure that?" He looks surprised
"Just a guess" I smile back at him
He stares at me for a couple seconds
"What?" I ask laughing
"I like you" and he goes back to making sandwiches
"Thanks... I guess"
"Oh I'm not trying be creepy or anything I'm just saying your better than Tish"
"Hey! I heard that you dick!"
"Yeah, well I think we would all rather have a hot chick that's super cool and likes my hair than scorpion queen over there"
"Scorpion queen?" I ask, laughing
"Yeah, just watch..." Piper tells me
A guy walks in and immediately goes over to Tish
"Hey, are you free tonight?"
"Yeah but I should let you know, because you might change your mind, it's just I don't like sex that much, I've never really had a real...you know..."
"Does that really work on guys?" I whisper to Jen
"Every. Time." She whispers back
"Woah, no way! Well I'll show you one tonight" He leaves
"Yeah I can see how she's the scorpion queen" I say and get back to work
"Hey! You guys have to stop telling the new employees the truth about me so soon" Tish complains
"Don't worry Tish" I say laughing
"Plus if a guy is that much of an idiot, he deserves the manipulation" I point out and take someone's order at the front while Piper is getting more bread from the back
"I like this one!" Tish says
"Thanks guys" I say laughing and Priestly gives me the customer's sandwich
The computer starts chiming, a lot
"Fuzzy!" Everyone yells at the same time
"Shut up guys!"
"Jen you're blushing! Who's Fuzzy?" I ask
"He's an online friend that I made and speaking of, I made a decision about meeting him and I going to go!"
"Well isn't that exciting! Wait but how do you know he's not just a creep that's into child porn or some thing?"
"That's what I said!" Tish says
"Well I don't but he seems really nice"
A lady with long brown hair and long skirt comes in
"Fuzzy is a good soul, I can feel it"
"Hi Zo" Trucker says
"Hello Trucker"
She turns to me
"Hello Lia, it's very nice to meet you... everything is going to work itself out. She wants you to know that she loves you and it wasn't your fault"
"Zo, thank you, so so much" I say with tears in my eyes
"Of course" She smiles at me and takes her sandwich
Everyone attacks me with a group hug
"Thanks guys" I say to all of them
"Did I say anything stupid?" Trucker asks
Everyone laughs and Priestly gives him a look
"Okay back to Fuzzy" I say wiping my tears
"Okay well I'm coming with you" Tish says
"Me too" Piper declares
"Lia... I know you just got here but do you want to come with us?" Jen asks me
"I would love to..."
"I'm sensing a but in our future" Piper says
"But... I have to find a place to live and get my shit out of my car"
"You can live with me!" Piper says
"What? No! I don't want to invade your space"
"Well too bad, I'll let my landlord know that there is going to be another person on the lease and you can have the other bedroom!"
"Are you sure Piper?"
"Yeah, I'm sure!"
"Thank you so much Piper!"
"Of course! I'll give you my key Saturday, when we leave, and you can just let me in Sunday, once we get back"
We just joke, laugh, and take orders until closing
After work, Piper and I get into my car and drive to her place
Piper doesn't have a car and just a bike so I put it on the roof of my car
We get there and I just crash on the couch for the night
"Goodnight Lia"
"Goodnight Piper"
"Tomorrow well have the boys over to do some labor and help you get your stuff inside"
Piper goes to her room and I quickly fall asleep on the couch
I have a really fun time with them my first day and hopefully I can start a new life here with my new friends
