Okay, before the story starts, here's the following:

Special Note:

I will be following the anime plot of Inuyasha as closely as possible, with some changes here and there courtesy of my OC Coraline. The only major change to mention at this point is that the story setting for the modern era will not be in the late 1990s as it is originally, but in 2017.

Disclaimer:

I do not own Inuyasha in any shape or form, be it the plot or characters.
That right solely belongs to Rumiko Takahashi (creator of the manga), and Sunrise Studio (anime series).

I also do not own references (subtle or otherwise) to the following:

Tomb Raider (reboot 2013 and onward; some of the story, characters, plus my OC is based off of Lara Croft); that's Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix

Legend of Zelda (Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time); that's Shigeru Miyamoto, Takashi Tezuka and Nintendo

Oh, and my character will be singing some songs from this time, so I'll be be adding disclaimers to the songs that come up. If I somehow forget, do not hesitate to let me know in the comments/reviews so I can fix it. Also, due to a comment that has recently surfaced (June 3rd), you will need to look up the lyrics on your own.

...Okay, that should cover it all. Now, on with the story!

Big Update (April-May 2020):

Hello my awesome readers! Hope you're all doing okay amongst the chaos that's been going on across the globe for more than a month now regarding COVID-19. So, getting down to business: much like I did with my Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler tale, I've decided it's time to go back and do some serious editing for this story.

Don't worry; I'm not gonna stop producing new chapters!...But given how long this story already is and will likely be by the time I do reach the end, I think it'd be wise to tweak the early chapters now rather than wait until it's complete.

Anyway, repeating what I said in a similar author's note before, there will be some noticeable changes coming, but it'll be somewhat focused on cleaning up grammar and lengthening descriptions.

Hope all of you - from loyal readers to newcomers - enjoy the updated version of my take on the popular feudal fantasy!

Prologue: Insidious Gemstone, Windswept Feelings, Triggered Destiny

Sengoku Period (430-480 ya), Goshinboku Village, Edo, Japan...

Our story begins almost five hundred years prior to the twenty-first century, in what was previously known as Edo, Japan. These were the times before skyscrapers and other modern buildings started their takeover across the landscape, and nature still ruled. Man-made structures during this older era were more or less subdued, unless you count the large palaces and temple shrines. The most common homes created as a form of refuge were huts and kuras (storehouses) dancing between the pit house and log cabin styles...

The current locale we focus in on is a modestly large farming village, settled deep within the lush green hillsides of Musachi province and just outside a forest thick with red pine, cedar and cypress trees...

Unfortunately, zooming in overhead, we see that the area is currently under attack! Fires blaze, engulfing a few huts while others lay ruined with damaged roofs, all of which are abandoned by the people living in them as they scramble for cover...

One would think that considering the time period, this was but the fault of political instability and ongoing wars.

"Inuyashaaa!"

...But is that really the case?

Following the collective outcry, we find several village men crowd back in fear as a figure - seemingly trapped within netting and rope - leaps into the air, and cuts through the bindings with ease!

...Getting a closer look at them, one could see this was no ordinary individual. They're a young man of around five foot six, his body built lean and possibly trapezoid shape, and has long, thick mane of silver-white hair. On his body is a crimson red kimono, with slits in the shoulders of the haori that expose the cream white nagajuban underneath. Finally, the young man's feet are left bare, and we see claws instead of nails on his fingertips, canine ears atop his head, and sharp, hazel-gold irises with slit black pupils.

With a small chuckle, the figure - identified as Inuyasha - continues his high-flying trajectory while dodging the arrows shot towards him, before crashing through the roof of a shrine house...Inside, he stands up straight and covers his face from the smoke of the fire posts planted inside, focusing his vision on his target of interest: a stone pedestal holding a mysterious amaranth pink jewel about the size of a large marble, held within a necklace of other mineral shards...

Inuyasha rushes over and snatches away the jewel, knocking the pedestal to the ground in the process. As he turns to leave, the door to the shrine bursts open, courtesy of more men from the village. The silver-haired youth acts quickly, dodging an onslaught of spears with another strong leap, crashing through the roof once again...

As he glides through the air, the boy remarks with a smirk,

"Ha! So there!"

He looks down at the small prize in his hand, adding,

"Finally...a way for me to become all demon at last!...Hrh!"

He lands swiftly on the ground, and begins to make a hasty retreat for the woods yonder...But just before the stranger could disappear...

"Inuyasha!"

A voice belonging to a young woman cries out his name, before pulling an arrow back on her bowstring...

(Twok)

The ammunition flies as Inuyasha leaps forward, and before he knew it...

(Whizz...TOK)

"Agh! Uh!...Ah..."

The arrowhead makes contact with his chest right where his heart lays, pinning the young man to the tree behind him and causing him to fumble his grip on the mysterious jewel...!

...An shell-shocked expression plasters onto his face, hand stretched out as the jewel falls to the ground a few feet away from him. His gaze then focuses on the source of the arrow: a young woman just reaching the beginning of adulthood, her body slim and hourglass-shaped, standing about the same height as her target, and with a fair porcelain complexion contrasting her jet black, hip-length hair styled in the Hime cut - minus the thick sidelocks - tied into a loose ponytail with a white ribbon. Her outfit suggests that she's what's known as a miko (sometimes called a shrine maiden or priestess), from the vermilion red hakama to the white kusode (the latter garment having sode-kukuri cords woven into the sleeves and open shoulders), an obi sash the same colour as the hakama, and zōri sandals made from rice straw overtop white tabi socks.

The female's expression on her face and within her chestnut brown irises is stern and calculating, her body stock-still as a gentle but cold breeze passes through the area...

With the last of his fleeting strength, Inuyasha calls out to the woman in a hoarse, betrayed voice,

"Ki-Kikyō...How could...I thought-...Auu..uh..."

And his eyes close as his life fades from this world...The woman - now identified as Kikyō - then steps forward slowly with a soft groan of pain, and involuntarily kneels in front of the fallen jewel. Getting a closer look, we notice a growing blood stain on her right shoulder...

Footsteps begin to resonate behind her, one set belonging to a young girl with a haircut similar to the priestess, but with semi-wilder bangs, approximately ten years of age and having an ivory complexion rather than porcelain. She's dressed in a light persimmon-coloured kimono with a dark red obi sash, and her right eye is covered by a bandage and gauze, leaving the other brown iris free to display the child's anxiousness.

"Big sister!"

She's joined by a couple men who were able to escape any life-threatening injuries.

"Lady Kikyō...!" "That wound..."

"You're hurt really badly."

Said young woman says more to herself in a weighed tone,

"...I, forgot who I, and now see what..."

She then picks up the jewel and holds it in her fingers, looking at the object with a grim expression.

"All for this...The Shikon-no-Tama, which-mmh!"

Kikyō cringes from her battle wound, and her younger sister desperately pleads with arms held out in concern,

"You're in pain; let someone..."

"...I won't, be let much longer."

Ignoring the fiery twinges in her shoulder, the miko then turns to her sibling and holds out the jewel.

"And so, I give this to you...The Shikon-no-Tama, which you must burn with my body."

She adds with a fierce determination,

"It must not fall into the hands of those who would abuse it."

Kikyō grasps the revered object to her as her expression morphs from serious...to one of distant sadness, mixed with pain and exhaustion...She whimpers softly and shuts her eyes, succumbing to her wound as her sister cries out in tears of anguish,

"Sister Kikyō...Sister Kikyōōōō!"

Time passes, and the body of the woman once known as Kikyō is seen burning within cremating flames, the mysterious 'Shikon-no-Tama' placed in her hands in a ceremonial fashion.

I shall take it with me, to the other world...

The jewel emits a bright glow as it, and she fall into the inferno, never to be seen again...

But for how long?

Unknown POV

...Fire. Gunshot...

Forest...must, escape...

...Pain...A, shining light...?

"The jewel...Protect, the jewel, and those connected..."

Wh...What?

I grab the light...no, an object.

So, bright...voices...

(sheen)

(Jolt)

"Gah-hh!...Hah, hah, hah..."

We now shift gears to almost five hundred years later, panning overhead a shinto shrine sitting atop a great hill within Japan's capital. Designed with four muted red torii gates at both ends of the very tall staircase, and two more on either side of the back leading to the split-level house for the resident family. Located at an angle from the main shrine is an aging well-house, and adjacent to that is the storehouse used to hold artifacts and various other objects. Then on the right side of the main shrine's front is a small office building where tourists first greet the caretaker...

Zooming within the window of one bedroom within the home on the property, we watch as one of the younger residents awakens from the curious dream they just had.

"...That, dream...It came again..."

Flipping off the covers of their bed, they get up and walk over to open the framed glass and greet the morning. As the early morning sun shines upon their form, we see that they're a young woman in her teens, standing five foot five with a slightly curvy pear-hourglass body, as outlined by her current attire of a black spaghetti-strap pajama top and matching capri pants. Her skin is a warm porcelain, contrasting her slightly wavy dark auburn hair cut to mid-back, and her irises are a bright sky blue lined by a darker cerulean.

Sucking in a deep breath of fresh air, the action does little to help quell the unease and intrigue arsing within the young redhead.

"...This is the third nigh' in a row I had this dream...I wonder what it means? And...why do I, have d'is feeling, something life-changin' is going to happen soon?"

Little did the girl know, just how right her intuition was,
or was about to be...in the events to come...
