Max POV

We have just destroyed Itex and all the Schools. Jeb and all other evil scientists are in hightech prison and will rot there for the rest of their lives. The flock and I are finally free and safe. Well, as safe as mutant bird-kids can be safe. We are currently flying over the Pacific Ocean, heading to Hawaii where we have decided to settle down on a private beach. Pretty nice right? Totally. We have been finally for eight hours and one more until we reach our new (hopefully long term) house.

"Max?" asked Nudge. Oh No. "I am tired. I have reached my limit. I am gonna die for exhaustion and it is all your fault. I am so hungry that I can eat five cows and it still won't be enough. Like seriously, where are the cows. I am hangry and neeeeeed something to eat. Oh, I see a dolphin! Aww, it is sooo cute! I want a dolphin as I pet. Angel, can you get me a pet dolphin. Oh, oh! Yes, I am going to name it Shine and we are going to be best friends. We are going to dfnajsdfoif-"

"Shut up, Nudge! We have one more hour until we reach the new place. Can you survive?" I ask, cautiously removing my hand from her mouth. Nudge nods and I sigh in relief.

It is about three in the afternoon and everyone looks like they are about to drop. Finally, after one long hour of silence, we have made it to the house. Everyone cheers and once we get inside, everyone races to their new bedrooms- which are already set up and decorated- and crash. Fang and I are the only ones up.

"Night, Fang!" I say breaking the silence. I head towards my new room and Fang heads to his. Just as my head hits the pillow, a searing pain ripples through my head. I bite down on my lip to stop from screaming and waking everyone up.

Hello Maximum Ride. Long time. The pain is a warning so listen closely. Says the voice.

God! Damn Voice! Why can't I just get a break for once? I just flew nine hours, defeated Itex and the Schools. I just want to sleep. What do you want? I screamed at the voice.

The pain lessens but now I have a massive headache. You cannot stay with your Flock for much longer. You need to leave. Flee. Without the flock knowing.

What?! Why!? What now? I thought we were safe. Goddammit!

The flock is not safe if you stay.

Why? What will happen? What could possibly happen? Just go away, Voice! I am done with your games. Just tell me what could possibly happen that I would need to leave when I finally have the life I have wished for myself and the others.

They will die because of you. You are about to experience the worst thing in your life. You will develop the power of fire and it gets out of control. If you stay, you will kill the flock in an act of anger.

How will I lose my temper? Really? When do I get this power?

Soon. A fight happens in the flock. It results in everyone dying except you. So, if you want to keep them safe, I expect you to listen to me for real. And listen closely.

Okay, fine. Voice, guess what! You win. What do I have to do? I will do anything if it means keeping the flock safe, but you have to do something in return for me first.

And what is that?

Get a personality, actually be helpful to me, and answer questions and not just leave!

Fine. I agree to your terms for once. Here is what you have to do:

You will be experiencing pain throughout your body starting tomorrow. The only way to control the pain and lessen it is you have to spend exactly one month underwater.

What! Are you trying to kill me? Is this just a trick?

Ha-ha. No. You must shut down your body while underwater. You will still be alive and while you are shut down, I will keep animals away and help keep you safe. While your body is shut down, the pain will pass and the new power will start to develop. I will wake you up when it is time for faze two. Now, I am giving your brain directions and after a good night of sleep tonight, your brain will already know where to go. Now rest up, Maximum Ride.

Do I get to tell the flock that I have to leave?

NO! You must not! Leave without them knowing. NO note, NO telling, keep a mind block up too.

Fine! But if I ever see the flock again and they are mad at me it is all your fault. Got that?

I know the consequences.

Ugh! Go away. Let me sleep. Stupid Voice!

Night, Maximum.

After a few minutes of tossing and turning, I am out cold. After a dreamless sleep, I wake up at four in the morning due to going to bed early and my messed up sleep schedule. Time to leave! Hooray! Damn, the flock is going to hate me. I hate my stinken life!

Hurry Maximum!

Oh shut up! At least let me say goodbye quietly! Who knows if I will ever see these people again!

Groaning, I get out of bed and walk over to my huge closest. Grabbing my backpack, five changes of clothes, my laptop, phone, and spare credit card (I am leaving the Max Ride card for the flock) I rush to the kitchen and fill the bag with water and snacks. I also attach a sleeping bag, pillow, and blanket to the bottom of the bag. Setting the bag down outside on the porch, I head up stairs to change. I pull on a pair of newerish jeans, a black tank top, a dark purple leather jacket, combat boots, and place my promise ring Fang gave me on my finger. Quickly, brushing my teeth and hair, I place my toiterities in the bag and head to the kitchen to eat. By now, it is 5:00 a.m. and almost everyone is still asleep. By the time I finish eating, almost one box of cereal is gone and half a container of orange juice.

I clean my dishes and head back upstairs to say a quiet goodbye. I stop outside Angel's room, and place my mind block on. I walk in quietly to see a sleeping Angel. I give her a quick kiss on the forehead and leave the room without her knowing that I was there. I do the same for Nudge, Gazzy and Iggy. Now, I am standing outside Fang's bedroom with my head on the door. Oh my god! Fang is going to hate me! I single tear rolls down my cheek and I quickly wipe it away. Walking in, I see Fang up and updating his damn blog. I roll my eyes.

"Good morning," I say and walk up to him, hugging him from behind. Fang closes his laptop and turns towards me. I let go.

"Are you okay?" He asks. Damn. Why does he have to read me like a book?

"Err, yeah. Just tired and a bit paranoid. It's annoying. Being on the run for so long and finally knowing that you are safe." I put my hands around his waist and pulled him into a tight hug.

Fang tenses but hugs me back. "Yeah I know. But it's nice. We finally get more time together. We finally have the life we wanted."

I close my eyes, forcing the tears back. I tighten my hug and barry my face in Fang's neck. "Are you sure you are okay?"

I loosen my hold and look up to see concern in his gorgeous eyes. I nod and kiss him gently on the cheek. "I love you, Fang. I always will. Never forget that."

"I love you too, Max. Always and forever." He kisses me gently on the lips. After a few seconds, we pull away and he leaves to change. A few silent tears roll down my cheek and I hurry downstairs before anyone sees me. I walk out the backdoor as quietly as I can and put the backpack on. Opening up my wings, I ran and jumped into the hair. After I am high enough that no one can see me, I break down crying.

Okay, Voice! I said goodbye! Are you happy? Now what?

Yes, Maximum. Don't think. Just fly. You will go the right way.

Without knowing it, I am flying west. Tears now flowing freely down my cheek.
