CHAPTER 1
2019
"9-1-1. What's your emergency?"
"Yes, this is Michael from Pizza Funland. We received an online order with a note in the comment section saying that the customer is being held hostage by her ex-boyfriend."
Patrol Sergeant Angie Williams pulled up to the driveway of a bungalow house. She then got out of her vehicle, walked up to the door, and rang the doorbell. A young woman with red hair slightly opened the door and stuck her head out.
"May I help you, Officer?" the woman asked.
"Patrol Sergeant Angie Williams," Angie replied. "I'm looking for a missing child."
"Sorry," the woman said quickly. "I haven't seen any missing children. Goodbye."
"I'm going to need to ask you a few questions," Angie said. "If you could just step outside."
"I can't step outside," the woman said nervously. "I can answer your questions out here."
Angie drew her gun.
"Drop the weapon and come out with your hands up!" Angie shouted.
The woman suddenly fell to the ground and a young armed man with blonde hair came out of the house.
"Drop your weapon!" Angie shouted. "Drop your weapon or I will shoot!"
The man shot the woman in the back of the head. Angie responded by shooting the man dead. She quickly got on the ground beside the young woman and spoke into her talkie.
"Officer to dispatch!" Angie shouted. "Suspect is down and victim has been shot in the back of the head! I need an EMT!"
Later in the hospital, Angie waited on the status of the young patient. A female doctor approached her.
"I'm so sorry," the doctor said. "I'm afraid we lost her."
2 YEARS LATER
Angie stood at a podium in front of a room full of Rookie officers.
"Two years ago I made a mistake by going to that hostage situation without backup," Angie said. "Not only did it nearly cost me my job, but my mistake caused Amber Kinsley to lose her life. We as police officers must learn to not make mistakes. Always go by protocol."
Meanwhile, Jackson Callerson sat in the living room of his trailer watching a movie on his television. While his two dogs sat on the floor. As the climax of the movie began, Jackson's phone rang.
"Of course," Jackson said, pausing the movie and answering his phone. "Hello."
"Jackson," a female voice came from the other end of the phone. "This is Karen. Landon called in sick. Can you be here in half an hour?"
"I'll be right there," Jackson replied.
Jackson hung up his phone and turned off the movie. He then looked at his dogs.
"Guess we'll have to wait until I get back, huh?" Jackson asked his dogs in a silly tone.
Half an hour later, Jackson arrived at the dispatch office in Oklahoma City. As he entered, his boss, Karen, walked over to him.
"Thank you so much for coming," Karen said. "Landon has the flu and we have been flooded with calls."
"I understand," Jackson said, sitting at his station.
Not even ten seconds after her sat down, the phone at his desk rang.
"9-1-1," Jackson said. "Please state your emergency."
"I accidentally drove my car into a pond and I can't get out!" a man's voice shouted. "My car is filling up with water!"
