Hello everyone! Welcome to my story! Originally, I posted this and had every intention of continuing, but I found myself stressed with school and family. Being a college student is a struggle. But here we are again for the second time! I am going to post this first and then rewrite Chapter 2. But for now, I hope you enjoy the ride!
A quick disclaimer: all of my stories are centered on black queer characters, for the most part. I saw that so there's an understanding that you'll most likely experience a lot of black and queer themes. So open minds are great!
If y'all interested in other stories by me, I'm restarting my Pokemon Adventures story. It's OC-based and set in the future after the original Pokedex Holders. Feel free to check it out!
For writing this chapter, a big musical inspiration was Put Your Records On by Corinne Bailey Rae.
Fairy Tail's Moonlight
Chapter 1: Moonlit Gazing
The night. Creepy and desolate, filled with monstrous unknowns. Noname heard plenty of stories of great people who surrendered to its hidden truths. Part of him feared he would join them. Or so the monks said. They were convinced it was his destiny to be lost there. Lost in his nightmares as lost memories forever evaded him for his sins.
Whatever that meant. Noname—as the others called him—believed it had to do with something else.
Regardless, he quite enjoyed the night. Especially on clear skies like tonight. He sat in front of the window, clad in the ugly, stiff pajamas the monks provided him. He had just woken up from another nightmare. Usually, he did not recall much other than needing to breathe. Tonight, however, was different. He was attacked by monsters—demons? He did not know for sure—and the moon saved him.
You watchin' out for me, huh? He smiled. The crescent moon returned the gesture, bathing his dark skin in its silver rays. For a moment, he forgot about the cold, slimy sweat drenching his skin. Or how the other teenagers likened his skin to dirt.
All he cared for was the moon's embrace.
Its touch and kiss soothed the tension deep in his heart. Then mended his wounds with only a thought. He welcomed it eagerly into his life. His eyes fluttered close as a soft breeze trickled him. A gift from the moon, he reasoned. A shame he had nothing to give in return.
"What's it like up there," he whispered, worried his roommate might hear. Perhaps misplaced—Aquilo never gave him trouble. If anything, he made these months bearable. Even if his obnoxious snores interrupted the moon's message. Hopefully, she did not mind the interruption.
The moon only shined brighter, caressing his dark skin in her embrace. He preferred it this way. The silence allowed for his mind to breathe and still the fear seizing his heart. Just breathe, the moon had whispered in his dream, just breathe.
And so, he did. With deep inhales, he filled his lungs with precious oxygen before he exhaled. Breathing had saved him in the nightmare. Once he calmed down the anxiety, the tentacles probing him lessened. Recoiled in horror.
Just like those slimy tentacles, the fear recoiled. Finally, Noname grinned.
"Thank you again," he remarked softly. He hoped the moon heard from him here. Getting any louder might bother Aquilo and Noname preferred to avoid that. "I appreciate it."
Noname gave his goodbyes before he tiptoed to his bed. Aquilo, somewhere, slept through the creaking floorboards. Honestly, the monastery needed repairs. However, Noname chose not to concern himself with those matters. All that mattered was his rest. And as he returned to bed, his eyes fluttered close, allowing sleep to overtake him. This time, he welcomed them with open arms.

Noname saw the sea when he opened his eyes. The crashing waves alit by the silver glow of the full moon. Figures—silhouetted even under the moonbeams—breached the crystal waters and thrilled! Before diving back into the dark depths of their cozy home. He smiled. Part of him longed for that sense of freedom. Another part, for some reason, felt it already gained.
The slower waves splashed onto the shore, drenching his bare feet. And he laughed. Strange, foreign laughter that sounded much younger than what he was used to. And…happier? He was not certain. What he was certain of, however, was the sand he sat on. He grappled a clump and sprinkled it through his fingers. Real sand, just like he read about.
They did not have sand at Tengu Temple. Only endless mounds of soft snow the monk refused to let them enjoy. Come to think of it, there was not a lake this clear either. Nor did it have these strange creatures either. He glanced around, yet the motion felt mechanical. Expected, he frowned. Unusual, just like the abundance of…people?
Hard to tell. They were silhouetted as well. Scattered about with smaller figures beside them. An animal companion, he wagered. The monks told him they were common in the outside world. But the bond between man and animal always ended in demonic behavior.
So, he could not prevent his surprise when he glanced beside him and saw an animal companion of his own. This one was not silhouetted like the others. Just a blue seal lounging on its back in the sand. Her long white snout tipped with a round, pink nose like a clown horn. It did not have a care in the world. Even with the sand sprinkled on the frill—a bib, maybe? —around its neck.
His lips formed a smile and a voice, much younger than his puberty cracking voice, said, "Ain't this awesome Primari?"
The seal—Primari? —giggled. A lovely melody of swishing soap bubbles bouncing off each other. It hopped onto Its tail and clapped its paws to a beat Kamari could not hear. But he caught the rhythm and swayed. He hummed, letting his heart take him on the ride, uncaring of words.
They kept at for a while. How long—Noname did not know. Nor cared, truly. The humming brought a sense of peace he had not reached before. Not since waking up in the monastery after the monks found him in the snow, devoid of his memories.
Suddenly, Primari stopped and snorted. From its nose came a furry of sparkling blue bubbles. They danced under the moonlight, sparkling silvers as they floated higher. Noname smiled.
"So pretty, Primari."
Primari thrilled its thanks and clapped. It—no, she! She accepted the praise and bowed her thanks.
"Kamari!" An oddly distorted voice interrupted the moment. Noname glanced over his shoulders and found a frantic silhouette racing over. Arms flailing as he wailed. Comical, almost. The voice tingled the back of his head, calling forth a name he could not catch.
"Kamari," the silhouette spoke once they reached. Finally relaxing as they folded their arms behind their head. "Thank—I found you! C'mon—is looking for us!"
Kamari? The name replayed in his mind. Tickling parts of him he did not know existed. And he smiled. Somehow, it fitted him well. Kamari, another name emerged in his head, knitting itself together using the moonlight as its pen. Agrinya. The new name formed before him in glittery letters composed of pure moonlight. He reached for it. To his surprise, they exploded into a burst of light. Silver much like the moon, until it darkened into a soft brown. The same brown of his eyes, warming not only his skin but his heart.
Kamari Agrinya. He hugged himself with a grin. No longer was he the no-name stranger abandoned in the snow. Not the kid with dirty skin and unruly hair.
He was Kamari Agrinya. For now, that was all he needed to know.

When Noname—Kamari, he amened with a smile. When Kamari opened his eyes, he was warm. Filled with a strange emotion he could not quite name. He knew the monks had books on them. Maybe he would rummage through the library later for it.
When his eyes opened, it was morning. The sun bled into their room, bestowing his skin with sweet kisses. A gift from the moon, he figured. She must have spoken with the sun before she left. Kamari giggled and stretched. That was when he saw it.
Strings of soft brown light oozed out of his skin. Swishing and swaying like waves against the shore. He marveled at it. Flexed his fingers and watched them dance.
"Whoa!" His roommate exclaimed from his futon. Kamari glanced at him. His roommate always looked so cute, even with his messy white hair frazzled from sleeping. Porcelain skin matched with icy blue eyes that glowed like snowflakes. Somehow, he made those ugly pajamas stylish.
"How are you doing that?"
Kamari shrugged. It did not matter to him much. Not when the light brought with it comfort and stability. Much like the moon after a furious nightmare. He welcomed the change. Even if it confused him just a little.
"Dunno, but I do have somethin' to tell ya, Aquilo!" His roommate cocked his head and urged him on with his pretty eyes. "My name is Kamari, Kamari Agrinya. It's nice to meet you."
Aquilo adopted a bewildered look. Eyes wide as his lips smacked, desperate to form words. But the shock burned away concrete thoughts. Kamari laughed. Long and hard until his stomach ached. Aquilo raced to his side, spewing questions left and right. Kamari did not pay them much mind. All they did was fuel the smile spreading across his face.
For once, he felt like he belonged. For once, Kamari Agrinya was a whole person.
