Chapter 1
The gang were travelling to Old Town Tucson in Arizona for a Wild West Steampunk Convention that Shaggy and Scooby were dragging the gang to. Shaggy missed the one last year because he'd got food poisoning from a dodgy taco and spent a week in bed.
This year, he and Scooby had gone all out with their costumes; he and Scooby were cowboys and had plastic guns, Daphne and Velma had steampunk dresses and Fred had a simple bowler hat with a black suit. Shaggy was so pleased with the costumes and couldn't wait to get to the convention.
Shaggy sat in the front with Scooby, he drove the Mystery Machine through the Chihuahuan Desert. Shaggy and Scooby sang along to Bon Jovi's Dead or Alive, whilst the rest of the gang slept in the back.
Velma's eyes slowly rolled open. It wasn't the loud music or Shaggy and Scooby's out of tune singing that woke her up, well that was partly the reason, but the road was so bumpy it was getting difficult to sleep. She sat up, glancing at Fred and Daphne. They were still asleep, leaning against the wall and Daphne had her head resting on Fred's shoulder and his arm was wrapped around her shoulder. How they could sleep in these conditions, she didn't know.
"Can you guys keep it down? We're trying to sleep back here." Velma said groggily as she crawled to the front, Shaggy turned the music down. "Sorry Velm," He began, "But we were gonna like, wake you up anyway. There's a town comin' up and we're like, starvin'."
"But we just had dinner two hours ago." Velma informed, looked down at her watch. "Yeah, but that's like, 14 hours in dog time. Plus, we have another four hours of the journey left." Shaggy said.
Suddenly, there was an ear-splitting screeching sound, if the music and the bumpy road hadn't woken Daphne and Fred up, the screeching certainly did. "Hey, what's with that noise?" Fred asked. Before anyone could reply, a blinding bright light filled the Mystery Machine.
Shaggy couldn't see where he was going and swerved, he quickly slammed his foot on the brake, but it was too late, and he crashed into a cactus. The gang covered the eyes from the bright light, Fred wanted to look and see what it was, but he knew the light would probably blind him if he did.
The screeching stopped and the light disappeared. "What was that?" Daphne asked. "Like, I-I d-don't know." Shaggy said nervously, "Raliens!" Scooby exclaimed, "I sure hope not!" Shaggy exclaimed.
"Aliens? I don't think so." Velma replied. "Then what was that screeching and that bright light?" Daphne asked. "I don't know." Velma said. Fred pulled open the side door and he, Daphne and Velma climbed out. Shaggy and Scooby climbed out of the front, and Fred lifted the bonnet; smoke spilled out of it and he wafted it out of his face. "Looks like the radiator's shot." He said.
Scooby and Shaggy were looking around nervously, whilst Daphne was looking up at the night sky. "Look, there's light over there." Velma pointed into the distance and the gang looked in the direction where they saw a dim light.
"Come on, maybe we can get some help." Fred said. "But that looks like 100 miles away." Shaggy complained, "And the aliens went that way."
"Reah." Scooby agreed, standing close to Shaggy. "You know what, you three go to town and Scooby and I will like, guard the Mystery Machine." Shaggy said. "Reah!" Scooby agreed again.
"Really? That's very brave of you Scooby." Velma said, patting Scooby's head, "Rank roo." He replied with a smile. "Come on girls, let's get some help." Fred said, and he and girls began in the direction of the dim light.
"We'll bring back some help." Daphne said. "And bring back some food too." Shaggy said.
They watched as the 3 tread into the distance. Shaggy sat down in the back of the van and he began rummaging through the boxes in the back. Their costumes were packed neatly in suitcases, but Shaggy was looking for food; it could be hours before the gang returned.
"Like, I hope we get out of this creepy desert soon, Scooby." Shaggy said, Scooby was keeping guard whilst Shaggy was in the van, "I don't wanna miss the Wild West Steampunk Convention again, Scoob. AHA!" He exclaimed, pulling out a box of Scooby Snacks. He tore the lid off, but there was only one left.
Scooby sniffed the air, picking up the scent of the Scooby snack; he growled when he saw that Shaggy was about to eat it and not even share it with him. "Oh, haha, I was just checking that it was still like, good enough for us both t'eat, we don't want another situation like last year, huh Scooby." Shaggy said nervously, he quickly snapped the snack in half and threw one half to Scooby and popped the other into his mouth.
After Scooby had finished his Scooby Snack, he noticed something moving out the corner of his eye. "Like, what is it Scoob?" Shaggy asked, Scooby glared into the darkness of the desert, he could have sworn he saw something moving. But when Shaggy stepped out of the van, he saw it again. And Shaggy saw it too.
"Zoinks! Like, what is that?" Shaggy asked. "Bunny!" Scooby exclaimed. "No Scooby, that's not a bunny." Shaggy replied as a small creature stepped towards them. Shaggy grabbed his flashlight from the back of the Mystery Machine and shined it on the creature. He and Scooby both screamed, "Zoinks!" Shaggy exclaimed; Scooby jumped into his arms. "Run!" He exclaimed and Shaggy laughed.
"Scooby, it's a Jackalope, but like I thought those things were a myth?" Shaggy wondered, the Jackalope stared at the two, before it bared its shiny sharp teeth, this time Shaggy screamed, and he and Scooby took off running hoping the creature wouldn't be chasing them.
Fred, Daphne and Velma looked around as they entered the town, it seemed like a normal desert town; there were shops, houses and restaurants which all looked like they'd belonged back in the Wild West, but Fred cold tell that they'd been well looked after and some of the had been restored. There were some signs around, one read Doris Thornton's Book Club – Monday 18th at 1PM, another read MISSING: Cattle from Buckle Farm – 3 brown cows, 1 black cow and 2 white cows.
"Hey, look at this." Daphne said, she stepped towards one poster which was stapled to a telephone post. Fred and Velma followed her to the post, the poster stuck out the most, had a huge green alien covering most of the page the word written boldly at the bottom; ALIENS – REPORT ANYTHING SUSPICOUS
"Aliens?" Daphne asked, Fred laughed, "Come on Daph, aliens aren't real."
"Hmm, there's a diner over there, let's see if anyone can help us." Velma said, the gang made their way towards a building which had a huge sign above it reads SERGIO'S DINER
There were quite a few people in the diner, couples sat a tables and families and groups in booths, some people sat at the bar eating burgers and fries and drinking colas and shakes. A woman walked around in a bright pink dress with a white apron and a name badge that read, DOTTIE. Her hair was wound up tightly into a beehive with several pins.
They went up to the bar to ask for help when the door suddenly burst open and Shaggy and Scooby tumbled into the diner. "What happened to watching the van, guys?" Velma asked. "Like we were chased by a Jackalope." Shaggy exclaimed. "A jackalope?" Daphne and Fred asked, Shaggy nodded.
"Are you guys sitting in?" A voice asked, Dottie the waitress had come over to them, giving a pleasant smile. "Can you help us?" Velma asked, "Our van broke down."
"I'll get you guys seated and you can use the phone." Dottie replied, giving Fred a wink and a smirk. Fred's face flushed, but he felt uncomfortable, Daphne noticed but she brushed it off.
The gang found an empty booth and Shaggy and Scooby grabbed the menus and had already decided what they wanted. "So, tell us about this Jackalope." Velma smirked. "It was big, and it had antlers." Shaggy said. "Rabbits don't have antlers." Velma said. "This one did." Shaggy commented, "So, like, what are you guys gettin' t'eat?"
"Ruguer, ries, rizza!" Scooby exclaimed.
"Where did you see this Jackalope?" An unfamiliar voice asked, Daphne, Fred and Velma turned around and Shaggy and Scooby looked between them to see who'd spoke. An old man wearing a dirty brown hat, a red shirt under a brown jacket. Wrinkles covered his face and he reminded Shaggy of a mysterious character from an old Disney movie.
"Like, 2 miles that way." Shaggy said, pointing out the window. "By the big rock?" The old man asked. "It was too dark to see, and us three slept most of the journey." Daphne explained. "Like, I didn't see anything." Shaggy said.
"Did you see any signs for Scorpion Ridge?" The man asked. "Like, yeah, I did." Shaggy replied. The man chuckled, "That's Scorpion Ridge." He said, the gang exchanged looks. "Scorpion Ridge?" Fred asked.
"A lot of weird things happened over there." The man said. "What kind of weird stuff?" Velma asked. "Cattle disappearing, that Jackalope your friend saw, and…sightings." He said.
"What sightings?" Velma asked. "Aliens." The man said. "Zoinks!" Shaggy exclaimed; Scooby hid under the menu.
"Ailens?" Fred asked. "Yep." He said. "Can you tell us more?" Fred asked. "O'course. Name's Lester." The man said, offering them a seat in his booth. Fred, Daphne and Velma moved to sit with him, Shaggy and Scooby were reluctant as they didn't want to hear talk about aliens, nevertheless they sat with them.
"Tell us what happened." Velma asked. "But like, not it too much detail." Shaggy said, Lester chuckled. "A lot of weird stuff started happened, around a year ago. Cattle started disappearing, a couple of kids claimed they saw a Jackalope out by Scorpion Ridge, then some people said they saw aliens."
Fred and Daphne exchanged looks, "Is that why all those posters up around the town?" Daphne asked, Lester nodded. "I saw em too." He said.
Shaggy gasped, Scooby gulped but they both focussed on the menus, luckily for them, Dottie came over. "Are you guys ready to order?" She asked, smirking at Fred. He looked away and quickly read through the menu. "Like, I'll have a bacon an' cheeseburger with fries, an' coleslaw. And like, Scooby will have the same, with sweet potato fries and I'll have his coleslaw." Shaggy smiled, Dottie quickly scribbled down the order, "Usual Lester?" She asked, "Sure thing, Dottie." Lester smiled
"What about you, handsome?" She asked, lowering her voice as if to try and be seductive, "Umm…ermm…." Fred stuttered. "I'll just have a plain cheeseburger with cheesy fries, please." Velma said. "I'll have a halloumi burger please." Daphne said sweetly. "I'll just have a plain cheeseburger too. Daph, do you want to share my fries?" He asked, Daphne smiled, "Sure."
"Alright then, won't be long with those." Dottie smiled as she walked.
"You were saying you saw the aliens too, Lester?" Velma asked, he nodded. "I was out one night, by Scorpion Ridge. There was a loud screeching sound, and a bright light."
"That happened to us!" Daphne exclaimed. "The light got brighter and brighter, then I blacked out. When I woke up, I was inside a spaceship, there were a bunch o'wires stuck to my head and I was strapped to a cold metal table. The aliens were there, and they told me not to worry but they just asked me some questions." Lester said
"What kind of questions?" Velma asked. "Like, who I was and what I'd seen. I felt too weak to answer, but then I started having these…visions, is all I can call them." Lester said. "What did you see?" Fred asked. "I saw the desert and the town, crawling with aliens and the towns people, all dead." Lester spoke, the gang gasped, Shaggy gulped.
"I don't remember much after that; I woke up outside my house. If anyone else had this experience, they ain't tellin', but with all that cattle disappearing, strange things are all going on around here." Lester said. "That's so creepy!" Daphne exclaimed.
"Like, tell me about it!" Shaggy exclaimed.
"Lester, do you have any proof you were abducted?" Velma asked.
"Yeah," The old man said, "I got pictures."
