The Snowy Night
On a snowy night ...
I hear your voice,
calling your fate.
But ... what do you think of 'fate'?

The snows began to cover footsteps on a cold night with the moon peering through silent clouds. It was silent for common humans, yet frightening with wolves' howls that pierced the sky. Lightened by the moonlight and a dim lantern, a woman ran ahead on the dirt path rushedly. The white hood covered a big hum on her back slightly disheveled. In every ten seconds, her eyes glanced at the full moon. Sometimes she stopped a bit, but her eyes were wavering in anxiety. As the moon was shining brightly when the cloud moving further away from the moon, the woman's black jet eyes reflected the Moon like an onyx. Slowly, the hump on her back was disappearing when she was murmuring. It was gone like it was never there from the very start.
"Good, I have to go out of this forest!" She ran as fast as she could and not turned back, knowing the wolves were still far away from her. "I can feel it … she is coming to this world," said Mew Regiros with confident jet-black eyes then she curved a smile.
Today was her unlucky day. Just a moment after she arrived in Cislen town from Iseren village, she received a message saying that the Queen's delivery was near. As one that was pointed as the newborn princess' nanny, Mew ran as fast as she could and asked help from a merchant so she could stay in his carriage. Not only the sudden call but also the bad weather she had to face. She could not use her legs like she always did. The cold temperature, the thick fog, and snow ruined all the marks that she made on the safest route in the forest. It was not that there was no carriage for a royal nanny like her. It just her 'duty' and 'nature' that made her avoid making contact with people. Really, she really hated snow as much she hated darkness and wolves' howls. It was not predicted by town's forecasters and made all her marks were burdened by it. To be exact, it was the safest route she knew. But, thanks to the carriage she met on the way to the forest exit so she could escape from wolves.
She could not and would not expect someone, or a servant would pick her up. No one would do it for her. Even though the Griffins often offered a carriage and a guardian that would protect her, she could not accept that easily due to her 'duty'. It would make things uncomfortable between her and others who served the house. Moreover, which servant wanted to escort another servant, even their master ordered them?
A grin appeared on her face as she saw lights from houses, also torches and lanterns on the town side. Mew walked toward the farm outside the capital's wall. The farms were not in the harvest stage or planting anything. Snows covered all over the soils that usually were planted with corn or vegetable. However, orange and grape trees still stood as they were. As she realized she walked outside of the dirt road, she stepped aside and followed a path guided by lanterns to the gate of the Capital.
She slowed her steps and opened her hood showing her gleaming silk black hair. Before her, there was a fortress gate with several guardians with red rose emblem on their right chest. She stopped and looked around the fortress, hoping could find any guardian or knight she got acquaintance with.
A shadow caught her eyes. A red-haired knight with a brown cloak walked closer and brought a torch with him. "Mew? What are you doing at midnight like this? I thought you were in Iseren," the knight asked. His red eyes were reflecting on Mew's image squinted when he looked at a letter on Mew's hand. The letter was painted blue with a picture of a big lion's head around blue roses, the emblem of Griffin House. He nudged her shoulder.
Mew was tilting her head and gave him a letter that was sent by Griffin House. "This is from Duke of Griffin, Tonio Griffin," said Mew and lowered her head. "Duke Griffin told me I should come back to Ilwent as soon as possible as I received this message. He said it is time for the Queen to deliver her baby. The Queen will deliver the new princess."
The red eyed knight, Sir Ted Averon raised his eyebrows. "What, how could you know the Queen will deliver a princess instead of a prince even after the King declared it was a boy? Moreover, you were not here for months."
Her onyx eyes were rounded. She did not realize what she had said a while ago might confuse the knight. She smiled toward the knight. "Sometimes, you just have a feeling of something that would happen."
Ted glared. "You should not say something opposes King's wish."
Mew nodded while giggling softly. "I'm sorry."
The knight turned back and brandished his torch, ordered his subordinates to unlock the gate. The guardians followed his order and within seconds. The gate opened slowly making noises of rusty gears and iron. As the gate slowly opened her path, Mew wore her hood again. She turned her head to the red knight, stopped for a moment, and smiled brightly. The knight blushed then averted his eyes while giving an order to his subordinates. The noises of gears and iron broke the silence once again. As the servant headed to the capital, she put away the letter into her leather bag. She accelerated her pace but made sure not to make any sound.
Once she arrived at the castle, another knight who guarded the gate was asking her some questions. Mew opened her hooded cloak and revealed her black jet hair that shone in the night. The knight gave her a smile knowing she was a servant of the castle, the Queen's lady-in-waiting and also the royal nanny. She showed the letter from Lord Tonio Griffin. The knight allowed her to enter the castle. The castle was quiet at night yet leaving a warm feeling from the lanterns which were hanging on the ceiling and the wall. After she had entered the castle, a blue-haired butler came welcoming her and escorted her. The two walked slowly unwanted made any noise that would wake up the other. The butler escorted her until she reached the stairs. She stepped stairs carefully and was folding her hooded cloak.
The Queen was groaning in pain, calling her maid who just came from a long journey. Indeed, Mew has not taken care of all Queen's needs since her maternity since she had another order to do. However, the Queen gave her special treatment to her making that other servants jealous but nothing they could do. After the Queen had been pregnant, a temporary maid was chosen for replacing Mew. Nevertheless, she still had her title as the Queen's maid.
Mew entered the Queen's room. There was the King, the Queen's brother Tonio Griffin, and two little princesses of Blanche. Mew placed all of her stuff and began to help the baby delivering. Beside known as the Queen lady-in-waiting, people also called her the midwife of Grêle, because she handled the royal baby delivery of Grêle palace, the castle where the royal family lived in.
As soon as Mew entered the room, the others left the room, entrusting the Queen to the midwife that just arrived from her long mission. On her pale hands, a soft wind blowed. Strangely, it calmed the Queen who just groaning in pain a moment ago. Then, a water appeared from her fingerstrip, the water was circling around the Queen's waist and big stomach. Mew called the Queen several times and guided the Queen's breath. A light shone from Mew's pale hand then she closed her eyes while chanting a silent spell then, a baby's cries broke all the silence in the castle.
"My Queen, she was a healthy baby," she said as she smiled to the red baby with teallete eyes.
The room was silent. No one dared to spoke a word after the midwife entered the room. Even the two princesses that were crying before were quite hugging each other. The King could not stop himself from walking back and foward outside the Queen's chamber. Only Tonio Griffin, the Queen's older brother who was calm. He only looked at the falling-snow while remembering the letter he sent to Mew a few days ago.
Ever since the King and the Queen sent Mew for a journey, they have already prepared another mid wife in case the Queen due date came earlier. However, Tonio rejected the idea and told them that only Mew could help Lola, the Queen, with the delivery. Thus, he calculated the time when the baby would be born and send Mew the letter to abort her mission and come to the palace. No one knew where was Mew, but it was easy for Tonio to find her because of the contract.
The day has come for the Queen to deliver her baby. I know your mission is important, but you are the only one that could help Lola, my sister, the Queen. As your master, I' will give you my final order, you shall come the palace as soon as you read this letter. Help her to deliver her baby as like what you always do to the previous Queens. I expect the best from you, Mew Regiros de Albaster, the Hope of the Blanche Kingdom.
When the midwife told the royal family that the baby was born, the two princesses who were holding each other hands smiled brightly. The older one with clipped ginger hair hugged the baby pink-haired princess. The two ran to a man who wore blue silk pajamas.
"Do we have a brother or a sister, uncle Tonio?" the ginger-haired princess—Meiko Automne de Blanche— asked.
Duke Tonio de Griffin—also the head of Griffin— shook his head. "I don't know, dear. Let's wait for the news." He smiled at the princesses and held both of their little hands. Three of them walked closer to the King, Queen, also Mew.
After bathing the baby with warm water, Mew passed the baby to the Queen who lied down on her king-sized bed. Lola Griffin de Blanche, the Queen, smiled at her child.
"She is beautiful and healthy," Mew said, stated that the baby was a princess.
The King and the Queen were surprised. They believed it was a baby boy. Since the little was a girl, another fate was waiting for the Blanche Kingdom.
"A baby girl ….," the Queen said and snuggled her newborn child. The baby was red, small, and cute. It was like dolls which were the other princesses had in their room. "Meiko, Luka, come here and see your little sister." The Queen smiled brightly even though sweats were flowing all over her face.
The princesses tiptoed to saw their newborn sister. They smiled. Luka reached her newborn sister's hand. Slowly, the baby held Luka's index finger and opened her mouth. She smiled brightly and giggled.
"Let's give her a name," the King said as he sat beside Lola.
"Papa," Meiko called her father, Loen été de Blanche. "Can I give a name to the baby?" Meiko caressed her father's hand and smiled brightly, hoping he would allow her to give the baby a name she had chosen.
The King rounded his eyes and then gazed at his child gently. He patted Meiko's head and nodded. "Do you have a lovely name for the baby?"
"Yes, Papa." Meiko nodded and turned to the baby who was playing with Luka's index finger. "How about … Miku?" She asked as her eyes were glowing. Her eyes gazed to the baby and the Queen. "I read a story about an Elf princess who kind-hearted and ruled her kingdom bravely. The name of the Elf princess is Michaella, and she is often called Miku by her family."
Mew turned her head to Meiko, staring intensively. She closed her onyx eyes and exhaled her breath slowly.
"Miku?" The Queen smiled. "I love the name you have chosen, Meiko."
The King caressed the baby's cheek. "Then, her name is Miku Hiver de Blanche."
"Princess Hiver," Luka whispered and was tilting her head, lying at her mother's side.
"Welcome home, Miku."
