Chapter twenty one:
L watches as each member of the task force entered the room.
Each one wing as quiet as possible then gathering in the middle facing L.
Watari bringing up the rear.
L can see the looks of confusion from the team at Misa standing next to him.
Matsuda points to her looking the raven man in the eyes. "Is she joining us or something?" He inquires then his eyes brighten. "So we can use her if we need to! Like a key to get inside a group. Just like before." He looks proud that he had figured it all out himself.
"Actually not quite." L informs them and Matsuda blinks at this so he continues as planned. "Misa is working with us that is true. There is however a very different reason I invited her over here. There is something that all of you should know. I already know who Kira is." He can see the wide eyed from the others as they glance to each other. He can tell that they aren't sure what to think about it. He grabs their attention back by speaking once more. "It is time all of you become aware and fully involved."
"Wait." Soichiro speaks up gaining everyone's attention. "Shouldn't we wait for Light? He's not here yet." He points out and the others realize it's true.
"Light won't be joining us right now." L informs them and Soichiro stares at him. He doesn't mind and the others look to him silently wondering why. "Things will be explained though Light is not needed for this discussion." He informs them then continues before anyone can say anything. "You see while we were investigating I learned who Kira was and how people were actually dying." He knows the others know he means the Death note and some glance to Rem. He lets them do so while still explaining. "I was lucky enough to gain a spy who was close to said Kira. My spy kept me informed and we held secret meetings."
"Why weren't we informed of all this?" Ide complains slightly glaring. "It felt like we were chasing our own tails. Yet you knew all this information?!"
"The enemy is a lot closer than you might think." Ls words give Ide pause at hearing them. "Things were very delicate so it had to stay hidden. We couldn't risk Kira finding out the truth. Or you'd all be dead." He sees Matsuda shift uncomfortably at the idea. "I had to keep this whole thing a secret." He spots that they understand why he did it.
Clearly none of them want to die which is very common as expected.
"Who is this spy? How did this spy gain information we couldn't?" Soichiro presses after a moment of quiet.
"Well the second Kira is my spy." L can see their eyes grow big once more, and some open their mouths... Only to close them when nothing comes out. "I believe that I will pass the continued explanation to Misa here."
Misa steps forward to gain the attention of the shocked men. "I am sorry I couldn't say anything earlier. Like Ryuzaki said things were delicate." She admits remembering to use the name L told her to use.
"Wait! You're the second Kira!?" Matsuda almost yells though Watari quickly shushes him.
"Unfortunately." Misa sighs slumping then straightens herself as she feels a glance from L. "You see Rem gave me a Death note. Since all Shinimamis have at least one. I knew in order to help catch Kira id have to make some sacrifices. I wanted to help though. I do a side job of helping with cases. Though I keep quiet about it so I don't become a target. Only an old informant friend of mine really knows anything." She can see that they remain in stunned silence so she just continues. "You see I posed as the second Kira to get close to the original. It worked and though I had to be careful we started working together. I did trade part of my lifespan for the shinigami eyes. So I can see names and when they'll die. The thing is those who own Death notes have no lifespan. I used that to figure out who Kira is then get close to him. Me and Ryuzaki managed to get into contact by chance. We decided to work together when he found out what I was doing. I've been keeping him updated on things going on. We wanted to make a move sooner. However things changed and Kira planned for us to get the Death note. As a distraction from a bigger plan. So it was decided that it needed to happen before we could make a move."
"I knew who the third Kira was based on the information she gave me." L takes over as Misa doesn't mind.
Misa stands with her arms cutely behind her back. Her gaze on L as everyone listens.
"Once that Death note was in our hands itd be easier to convince you all." L keeps going keeping his gaze on his team. "The thought of having Misa show her Death note did cross my mind. I did want to get at least some proof before presenting things. After I heard the plan I knew we had to have it happen. We couldn't leave the Death note in the third Kira's hands." He brushes his thumb on his bottom lip. "Now we have it and soon we will begin moving in to catch Kira."
"Who is Kira?" Ide questions truly wanting to know.
L can see Watari give a wary look Soichiro though being in back no one else sees; with Misas eyes on L himself as well. "Light Yagami."
Everyone stands there as though suddenly feeling awkward.
"That's impossible. My son would never do such a thing." Soichiro protests only for L to turn to his computer.
The room goes quiet except for the clicks, then a file on a computer screen is shown on the bigger screens.
L clicks on a video showing what is on it. He has made sure the date and time are in the corner.
Everyone watches Light write down a name unaware of the camera.
"And that man died in Kira's way. A young healthy man killed because he committed a crime." L tells them then opens up pictures that Misa had taken. He is glad that Misa was able to show that it clearly is Light doing it. He glances over his shoulder to Soichiro who looks a little pale.
Watari seems to notice as well and puts a hand on the old mans shoulder.
Soichiro falls to his knees gaining everyone's attention. His eyes almost lost and his face left in a shocked expression. "It can't be." He mummers almost as if to himself though loud enough to be heard. "B-But..." He can't seem to find the words and everyone around him looks at him with great sympathy.
"I know this must be hard on you." L mentions and notices Soichiros head drop as if defeated. "Though we must begin to move forward. The next steps we take will be crucial."
"Shouldn't we go and arrest Light?" Matsuda questions L as Watari stays by Soichiro. His eyes as bright and as inquisitive as usual.
L can see others look to him knowing that they should listen to what he has to say. "Not yet." His words bring confused looks. He knows that everyone believes that they can see the obvious that they should move. "Light is smart. Even with this evidence he'll try to find ways around things. There is something that we must do before we move in for the arrest. Which means that you all will have to act as if you know nothing. Light can't know. He could find a way to halt us if he figures it out."
"What is it that we need to do?" Soichiros question brings everyone to look to him. His gaze is down and sad though resigned. He doesn't raise his head too much. He can tell the others hadn't expected him to jump on it so easily. He is Lights father so he should try to resist it. He however knows that there is too much evidence to ignore. He doesn't want to believe it, he just is forced to accept this reality. "Light dug his own grave on this. He should have known better."
L internally wishes he could ease the pain of the man who hasn't even gotten to his feet.
"It's not your fault." Matsuda tries to comfort him. "You didn't know this was going to happen. You were the vest father to Light that you could be."
Soichiro raises his head a little more, only enough to lock eyes with L. His gaze showing that he is throwing his emotions away for the greater good. He wants to know what they have to do before they can arrest Light.
"Well." L begins bringing attention once more to him. "We need to remember that he could be hiding a piece anywhere on him. The note book still works even if the pages are taken and torn up. So he could be hiding a piece that he plans to kill with. It could be himself or it could be one of you. Before we move in we are going to make sure that our efforts won't be wasted. We need to let him think things are going fine a bit longer. So Misa can make sure that there isn't someone that might make it all start over once more."
The others suppose that L is right as if they arrested Light then it just all happens again. They wouldn't feel like they accomplished anything.
"It won't be much longer. So be prepared. I'll call another meeting like this as soon as we'll be ready to arrest him. It most likely will be in the next few days. You may go back to bed." L informs them and everyone but Misa and Watari leave L in the room.
Once it is just the three of them Misa moves closer to L who turns to her. "I just need two days. I'll let you know if something comes up and I need longer." She mentions and L nods his head. She then heads off with Watari who politely offers to drive her home.
L turns away and something inside of him is excited for when this case is done. As he remembers that he and Misa plan to work together for the rest of their time. He finds himself smiling to thought all alone in the room.
