Bluefur blinked open her eyes, getting to her feet, and shaking the snow off her pelt. For a moment, she looked around, confused. Where am I? Where is my den, and where is everyone else? A bolt of realization struck her. She was taking her kits to RiverClan, and Mosskit had complained that she was tired. All four of them had settled down and drifted off to sleep. Looking down, she saw her three kits curled beneath her. As she gently nudged each one, Mistykit and Stonekit blinked open their eyes, and slowly stood up. Panic flashed in Bluefur's eyes as Mosskit stayed still, and the rise and fall of her flank stopped. Frantically, Bluefur shook Mosskit, lapping at her pelt. Still, she didn't move, and Bluefur settled down, shoulders hunched.
"Mommy, why won't Mosskit get up?" Mistykit blinked up at Bluefur.
With a playful roar, Stonekit jumped on Mosskit's body. "Wake up, sleepyhead!"
Bluefur scooped Mistykit and Stonekit away from Mosskit. "S-She'll wake up soon. We'll go ahead, and she will catch up, okay?"
"Okay…" Mistykit bounced ahead of Bluefur, crowing, "We're going to see our dad! We're going to see our dad!"
Casting one pained look behind her at Mosskit, Bluefur padded away with the rest of her kits.
Poor kit… Snowfur padded around Mosskit. She didn't have to die. The best I can do is care for her in StarClan.
Stepping closer to Mosskit, the white she-cat curled her tail around the still kit. A quiver ran through Mosskit's body, and Snowfur, shocked, looked down at Mosskit. Mosskit raised her head, letting out a feeble mewl.
She's alive! Gently picking up Mosskit, she bounded away into the snow.
A ShadowClan patrol patrolled the border, shivering in the cold.
An apprentice called out, "I hear something…"
"It's mewling," Cinderfoot, a she-cat warrior, padded in the direction of the wails.
Pushing aside the leaves of a dying bush, she uncovered a young white and gray kit. Eyes wide, the warrior picked up the kit, beckoning to the others in the patrol to follow her.
Snowfur watched, hidden. She will be safer here. As the kit in Cinderfoot's jaws wailed, reaching towards Snowfur, who had padded out to say goodbye to the kit, no other cat able to see her. Goodbye, precious kit. I will be watching over you.
