Author's Note: Hello there i'm back once again, here to give you a new theme where I write a series of oneshots. I figure bundling them all together would help in a way so they would be categorized better. I wanted to get someone out and this little gem came to mind. I hope you all give this a chance and leave a review telling me how it is. Now these oneshots will follow certain themes and also be alternate scenes to certain episodes of the series, and maybe deleted ones. These won't be updated regularly, only when I have an idea to crank out.
Summary: (Takes place after the first movie) After their first time ending in a troll hunt, Stoick suggest he and Hiccup take a small overnight fishing trip. Although hesitant in going, Hiccup agrees, hoping the two could bond the way they used to year prior.
Commentary: I really like the stories where Stoick and Hiccup bond with one another, and in the first movie I saw heard how one of their fishing trips didn't go as well. So I was thinking, what if they tried again years later, well Stoick tried to bond and be a good parent. This is how this idea formed in my head. I admit it could have gone better but this is the end result.
Fishing Trip
"Hiccup, Let's go Fishing"
That is something Hiccup never thought he would hear his father ask… Well never ask again.
Things seemed to be normal all-around Berk as the sun had set, prompting everyone to head either home or the great hall for a meal. This time around both father and son decided to just have a small dinner at home. Things seemed to be ok for the most part, he and Stoick eating, along with Toothless munching away at fish when Stoick asked the question.
"Fishing?" Hiccup had questioned, in shock and confusion. "Umm…really?"
Hiccup is bewildered at the question, mostly because of memories of the last time they went fishing together. Granted Hiccup was much smaller, yet he remembered that instead of trying to catch fish he went hunting for trolls. Sadly, he didn't find any. Yet, he could still remember the disappointment his father had when he realized the trip was a lost cause. After that Hiccup had counted on his father never asking to do that again. Well apparently, he's wrong.
"Why not?" Stoick questioned, trying to make light of the situation at hand. "It's been a while, and I think it would be a good bonding session for us."
"What brought this up?" Hiccup curiously asked, his foot completely forgotten. It wasn't like he was against the idea, well actually a little bit. It's just that Hiccup still felt a bit nervous being alone with his father. It has been a couple of months since his battle with the Red Death, and overtime Hiccup has been noticing a change around the village. He was accepted by everyone, all of which treated him with respect and lovingness he so much craved. Yet, the strangest thing happened to be his relationship between him and his father. His dad is…well acting more like a parent.
On and off he would be here at the house in the mornings to greet him before Hiccup went off for the day, and at night he would come home to find his dad there. Hiccup would then be asked about his day. And for some reason Hiccup would answer. It was nice being asked about how things went, something a parent would actually do with their child. It was nice being able to have a nice conversation with his father for once without any condescending tones or forced expressions. They were, surprisingly, actually acting like a family should. Still, Hiccup is still getting used to it, and a fishing trip happened to be something that never occurred.
"Well winter will be setting soon, and we won't be able to do something like this till spring, granted it'll still be cold, but still," Stoick responded, giving Hiccup his undivided attention. "So how about it? Just you and me."
Thankfully Hiccup seemed to be saved as an annoyed warble is heard prompting the two to look over at Toothless. The dragon's eyes narrowed at the two.
"I think Toothless is against that idea, well is against being left out," Hiccup responded awkwardly.
"Come on you overgrown lizard, you get Hiccup to yourself all day and night, would it be a problem for me to have him all of tomorrow and overnight?" Stoick remarked, the Night Fury not taking offense to the name calling as it seemed to be a pet name the chief has given to him.
"Overnight?" Hiccup questioned in surprised.
"Oh, forgot to mention that," Stoick said, suddenly remembering his blunder. "I figured we go to that lake on the other side of Berk, and camp out there, so we won't have to worry about treading home in the dark."
"I'm not sure," Hiccup leaned back in the chair, eyes casted down to avoid seeing the disappointed look his father might give. Fishing sounds good, but has doubts about it still, some part of him not feeling ready for that kind of activity…yet another part wanting those bonding moments he used to have with him.
Little did he know is that Stoick is disappointed, yet mostly at himself. The chief had a feeling that it might have been a bit too early to ask his son to go fishing with him, but he felt that it would be different right now. He also had to remember that he is still getting used to trying to get to know his son more and felt this little trip could help them bond more. The hesitation he witness was more than enough to tell him Hiccup's stance on the issue, "Son, it's alright if you don't want to, I was just-"
"N-No, no, that's not it actually," Hiccup interrupted, surprising his father some. In all honesty, Hiccup is really considering it. Mind thinking back to when he was younger, and how he and his dad had a close bond with one another. There would always be smiles between one another, and his dad would always listen to things he had to say. Things were…great back then and for some reason Hiccup wanted that. He wanted to experience that bond he used to share with his dad, if not just at least for a small moment. What harm could one small trip do? "I… I actually want to go."
Now that surprised Stoick big time, "Are you sure? You didn't seem keen on going just a moment ago."
"Yeah, but the more I think about it… The more it actually interests me," Hiccup gave a smile to his dad, now trying to lighten the mood. "And I promise not to go chasing trolls this time around."
They both shared a hearty laugh at this.
Toothless grumbled at this, mainly asking what about him?
Hiccup looked over and reached to pet his dragon, "Come on bud, it'll just be for one day, besides I can have Astrid watch you, and you can play with Stormfly." Toothless seemed to perk at this but ended up relenting. He didn't like being away from Hiccup now and then but had to realize he couldn't always have the teen to himself.
"Are you absolutely sure son?" Stoick asked, wanting to be Hiccup is serious about this.
"Yeah dad, it could be fun," he gave a smile, which his father returned.
…..
The next day, bright and early, both father and son rose to begin their trip. Stoick started packing some essentials as Hiccup went to go Ask Astrid to look after Toothless, informing her of his plans. She agreed and the Night Fury is handed over, which couldn't help but give his rider a few licks before going. He went back to pack a couple of things as well, his notebook along with his charcoal pen, his flint, knife and other essentials he needed. Soon the two were off.
They spent a while walking through the forest together, both in silence except for Stoick's whistling. Each one of them carrying a large satchel filled with items they needed, and each carrying a fishing rod with them. As Hiccup followed behind, he looked at the trail they took and remembered this very path from so long ago, as it was the same one that was taken on their last fishing trip. Since Hiccup was still quite young Stoick figured it would be best not to go off island and remain on Berk. Luckily during that time there hadn't been any dragon attacks, so they could enjoy it in relative peace… Well until Hiccup wandered off on his impromptu troll hunt.
The silence was ok for now, although Hiccup could have done without waking up early, but that's how his father liked doing things. He was surprised on how he was able to get the day off from his chiefting duties in order to do this. He maybe delegated his duties to someone else. Either way it's just the two of them for the whole day, and up until tomorrow where they would come back. So, he would have to make the best of things. For some reason, part of him started having second thoughts at doing this now that he's out here. Maybe it was some kind of remorse or the like, but it was there. He wasn't sure why it was there but tried his best to shake the feeling. No turning back now, he would just have to bear with it.
"Whoa, careful there," Stoick's voice disrupted Hiccup's train of thought, a large hand stopping him dead in his tracks.
"Huh?" Hiccup looked and was surprised to see large dip into the ground, one that he could have fell down on if he wasn't careful. "Thanks."
"Lost in thought?" Stoick asked, knowing not to make fun of the situation as he had come to known that Hiccup doesn't like his clumsiness being joked about. "That excited for fishing?" he smiled at his joke.
"Yeah…if it wasn't so early," Hiccup admitted as he yawned.
"You can nap once we get to our campsite," Stoick responded as he made sure his son got down from the small ledge before continuing on.
"I might actually do that," Hiccup nodded, glad at the prospect of resting for a bit longer. Thankfully his father didn't seem to get upset with that, almost as if he understood Hiccup's reasoning for resting more.
A while later they entered a clearing, and before them is a large stream, which fed into an equally large pond. The water didn't look that deep, yet it was deep enough to hold a lot of fish in it. Not too far away is a good, flat, space they could be used to set camp on. In all honesty the place did remind Hiccup of the Cove, yet the Cove would always be better than any other place. "Remember this place Hiccup?" Stoick asked out loud.
"A little," Hiccup responded as he did remember a bit. Frankly it was a long time ago but there were bits and pieces missing from his memory. Short attention span, one of a sparrow as his father had said. Still he could remember running off, grabbing a stick, and using it as a sword when he went hunting for trolls. He could almost see his dad rolling his eyes and running off after him. It was sad actually that was the only vivid part he could remember. Still, that was in the past and this is now. Maybe he could make new memories this time around?
"Either way lets set up camp before we cast our lines," Stoick moved forward towards the clearing, with Hiccup following behind. The teen nodded as he put his stuff down and went about looking for some stones to gather. Stoick turned to notice what his son is doing. Both eyes raised in confusion as he asked, "Son, what are you doing?"
"Gathering stones to put around the fire," Hiccup asked, a bit confused as to why his father asked that. "Isn't that the proper way to make a fire? So, the stones can keep the heat in and keep the wind out?"
Stoick happens to be surprised at that, eyes raising in surprised and bewildered at how his son knew how to make a fire properly. "Yes…so you know how to start one?"
"Y-Yeah… When you don't really have someone there to teach you, I tend to try and teach myself, along with Gobber's help," Hiccup responded awkwardly as he rubbed the back of his head with his free hand. Silence fell after what was said, Hiccup realized his mistake and wished he hadn't said anything. He didn't want things to turn out bad by bringing up bad memories of the past, but it just slipped out of him.
"Oh…right…I'm sorry," Stoick casted his eyes down in some shame, feeling foolish for not knowing his son knew basic survival skills like how to make a fire. It made him wonder what other things Hiccup knew how to do, and what other things Gobber may have taught him. Still, he tried not to dwell on it and tried to move past it, "Anyway, you make the pit, and I'll gather wood."
"Alright," Hiccup nodded as he put the stones he had down on spot where the fire would go. He went to gather some more and in a matter of minutes he had the right amount and started to make a small circle with the stones. He finished just in time as his father came back with two arms full of wood, enough to keep them supplied for the night. The chief placed it down, right next to the fire.
"You did a good job," Stoick said, seeing his son's work, truly impressed with the handywork.
"Thank you," Hiccup smiled as he picked up some wood and started to pile it properly within the stone circle. He would preset the wood for later when they needed the fire.
Stoick was surprised to see Hiccup putting the fire pit together all by himself and was sadden by this. Part of him wanted to use this trip to try and teach his son things, only to be reminded that his son is a teen. By now he would know basic skills right now or had them taught by Gobber. He wondered what more about his son he didn't know about… Hopefully he could rectify this and use this little trip to get to know him some more. Part of him shouted at him saying that it was too late for that… But part of him clung onto hope that it wasn't too late.
After a few minutes the wood is stacked and ready to be lit later on. The two of them then unrolled bed rolls that were brought along, as sleeping on the ground would be a bit rough for them, and these will make it a bit bearable. Once that was finished their camp seemed to be all set up. Stoick smiled as he removed his fur cape, to allow him better movement, and picked up his fishing rod. "Alright time to cast our lines."
"Sounds good," Hiccup smiled as he picked up his own rod, which earned a surprised look from his father.
"Thought you wanted to nap."
"Well…I'm actually not as tired anymore," Hiccup laughed nervously, when in all honesty it was true. He wasn't too tired, yet he could devote some time to fishing for a bit before trying to nap. Stoick seemed to smile at this answer as the two of them walked to the edge of the pond. Stoick looked at the crystal-clear water and moved along the edge, trying to find the right area to cast his line. Hiccup followed in silence for a while until a spot was chosen. They both them casted their lines and watched as the hooks sunk down into the water. Hiccup then watched as his father planted the hilt of the finishing rod into the ground, holding it up for him. This caused the teen's eyes raised up in surprise, "Wow, that's a nice trick."
Stoick's head perked up as he heard that, a bit surprised for a moment but then nodded. "Yeah, it's in case your hands get tired of holding the rod."
"That's really cool," Hiccup smiled, surprised at not knowing this. This has been the first time they've been finishing in a while and the last time he didn't pay attention to the actually fishing so he wouldn't have seen any of this.
"Yes, all you have to do is find a soft patch of dirt and just dig the hilt into it," Stoick then proceeded to show Hiccup how to do it, the teen listening and watching. In a matter of moments, the fishing rod is buried in the dirt. Now with their hands free both father and son were now sitting, watching the lake and waiting for them to get a bite. Silence filled the area as neither one of them knew what to say to one another. This wasn't what they were expecting at all as they thought they would be talking, but that wasn't the case. Stoick decided to be the one to break the silence. "So, son, how are things with the academy?"
"Things are good actually…everyone else are finally starting to take the lessons seriously," Hiccup responded. Ok, small talk, he could deal with this for now. "I love running the place."
"I can tell," Stoick gave a smile, remembering back a bit. "I can practically hear you shouting with delight as you fly around on your dragon."
"You don't know the half of it dad, if you got on a dragon of your own then all your work could-" Hiccup started but was promptly cut off.
"Son, I don't do things the dragon way, I do it the Viking way," Stoick responded back. This is something the two have been going back and forth with recently. Hiccup has been trying to get his father to ride a dragon, to help make his chief duties easier, but Hiccup soon realized where he gets his stubbornness from. Stoick refused to give up doing his job the Viking way. Once again, he isn't listening to reason, so Hiccup would drop it… For now.
Instead he smiled and looked at his father. For some reason the talk was starting to get easier for him. He's feeling more at ease being alone with his dad, and the awkward tension is leaving. It felt like he could talk to the man about anything. In which something did come to mind. "Umm… Dad, can I ask you something?"
"Of course," Stoick responded softly, turning to look at his son in curiosity.
"How do you really feel about Dragons living among us?" This is something he really wanted to know about. In the end it was the chief's decision to allow the dragons in the village, but Hiccup always wondered his true state of mind. If he didn't want to ride one, then did that mean he still had some kind of distrust in them?
"It still amazes me, and hard to believe," Stoick answered, figured his son deserve to know the truth. "As a child I've been told Dragons were the enemy, and I've been raised to kill them. Killing them is all I ever know, but thanks to you… That danger chapter in our lives is over. It amazes me at how accepting the dragons are of being around us, and how all of Berk has accepted them as well. It makes me wonder how things will be years from now."
"I think it could be wonderful, something that no other tribe has nor will ever experience before," Hiccup chimed in. "Dragons and Vikings living together in peace… This could be something that could change the archipelago."
Stoick could see his son marvel in his words, truly believing in what he said. Sadly, Stoick didn't think that. As much as he didn't want to, he interrupted, "Hiccup, most of the tribes and villages wouldn't be as accepting to dragons as we are. They don't understand them like you do."
"You didn't either," Hiccup responded back firmly, but kept his voice light as to not make it accusing. "But after you saw how amazing they are, you changed your mind."
"Only because I almost lost you… Which should have never happened in the first time," Stoick shook his head, looking back at the lake. His mind replaying the events that caused him to nearly lead all of the Vikings to their death against the large dragon, in which ins son had to lose a leg in order to save them. And the very thing he did that caused his son the most pain.
"Dad… I'm still here, thanks to Toothless. I got a second chance, and in turn so did you," Hiccup responded, causing his father to look back at him in confusion. "We're here, fishing together, so it all worked out for the best. Like you always told me, I shouldn't dwell on the past as it doesn't matter anymore, and we can't change it."
"That's true," Stoick nodded. "When did you get so wise?"
"I had some good parental advice," Hiccup smiled, in which Stoick smiled back. So far, things were going great between them, as all worry flew out the window. Maybe, just maybe, this could work.
Just then Hiccup's fishing rod started to shake, alerting the two of them. "You got a bite!" Stoick said.
Hiccup quickly got up and picked up his fishing pole, trying to reel in the catch. He grunted as he felt a good amount of resistance, but he kept going. He started to walk backwards, trying to pull the fish more, but cried out as his prosthetic slipped forward, causing him to fall back. Thankfully he didn't hit the ground as he was stopped. Looking he saw his father had caught before he could hit the groun, and put him back on his feet. The two shared a brief glace, as many silent words were said between them. Without saying anything Stoick held his son up to help keep his balance as Hiccup kept pulling on the pole. Hiccup needed help, but he also wanted to catch this fish on his own.
Stoick understood it would be the first time Hiccup would catch a fish in his father's presence and wanted to feel the pride that came with it. The chief understood this and allowed him to do the brunt end of the work. To aid him he spoke into his ear, "Follow the line's movement, wear the fish out so it has no strength to fight back."
Hiccup nodded and heeded his father's advice and moved the rod in the same direction the fish is moving. He kept regripping the pole as the resistance remained, the pole nearby being pried out of his hands. Thankfully, he didn't let go and as a bit of time passed, he noticed there was less resistance. It's working and the fish is tiring. The small fight is coming to a close and Hiccup waited for the perfect moment upon reeling it in. With all his might he pulled back on the rod, eyes squeezing shut and teeth gritting in the process. All of a sudden, all resistance faded as he nearly fell back again, only to be held still by his father. Opening his eyes and looking he saw a flailing fish dangling in the air by the fishing wire. The teen is holding his catch up in the air, he did it, he caught the fish!
"Ha! Well done Son!" Stoick proudly exclaimed as he clasped a hearty hand on the teen's shoulder. "And it's a large one."
"I can't believe I did it," Hiccup smiled as he looked his fish over. For such a big struggle its size did match the fight. It was probably sixteen inches long and looked pretty fat. After inspecting the fish he couldn't help but look at his dad. "Thank you."
"Hiccup that was all you," Stoick responded in confusion.
"I wouldn't have caught it if you didn't keep me still… Plus that advice really did help," Hiccup admitted truthfully. Truth be told he had caught fish before, but they were always small ones that didn't put up much of a struggle… Kind of a reflection of himself. Other times it was Toothless who caught them for him. Still he never got one as big as this before, and the advice told to him really did help.
"Either way Hiccup, in the end you still caught it," Stoick said to him, trying t build up his son's confidence.
All this did is made Hiccup smirk, "All this tells me is that I'm ahead of you, as I caught one and you don't have any." He managed to pry the fish off the hook and toss it in a nearby basket to be held.
Stoick gave a hearty laugh, "I won't be for long, beginner's luck."
"We'll see," Hiccup smiled as he casted his line out again, sharing in the laugh.
When Hiccup was told about going on this fishing trip, he thought it would be a bad idea. How wrong he was. Not only was the awkward tension gone, but they were talking more, something Hiccup is enjoying. Stoick is enjoying being able to get to know his son more and is glad to be spending more time with him. They no longer had anymore worries about this little trip. The two of them were having a good time, and to think…
They had the whole day and night to enjoy this.

Author's Note: Hope you like. I hope this is something you all will enjoy and stick around to view when I update. I would love to hear from you all about this, and get some advice. I have a lot more planned as I have an upcoming chapter story in the works. A short chapter story but it'll be good none the less. Till next time.
