Catra did spend the summer at GWMA. The campus' proximity to Adora's house meant that she could see Catra almost every day. It was the best summer of Adora's life. They took things slow but Adora was constantly impressed by the ways Catra stepped out of her comfort zone. There were definitely bad days, days where Catra retreated into herself and hid herself away. Those days could always be remedied by a good cry in Adora's arms and a race through campus to get out the anger.
The Sunday before their Junior year was to start, Adora, Catra, Scorpia, and Entrapta met on the obstacle course. As was becoming tradition, newly appointed Cadet Captain Garnet showed up with her stopwatch and clipboard. Entrapta only brought a communication device she had made out of scraps of discarded cell phones. On it, she streamed video to Bow, Glimmer, and Micah who unfortunately couldn't make the momentous occasion.
Catra and Adora took their places and on Scorpia's whistle, they took off, racing each other through the obstacle course. Up the ramp, across the rope grid - their feet hit the ground at the same time, but Adora threw out an elbow, making Catra lose her balance. Adora led the way through the hurdles but Catra was right on her tail. Just before they reached the monkey bars, Catra stuck out a leg and tripped Adora, who fell flat on her face. Spitting up grass and dirt, Adora raced after Catra but when she was on the last bar, Catra turned and kicked her in the solar plexus, winding her slightly and making her lose her grip.
"Cheater!" Adora yelled after her.
Under the barbed wire, Adora caught Catra's boot and pulled as hard as she could, inching closer to the drill captain. Catra kicked out, trying to dislodge Adora's grip.
When Catra reached the end of the barbed wire, however, she came to a halt and allowed Adora to crawl up next to her. She put a hand on Adora's cheek and gave her a quick peck on the lips.
Smirking, Adora gripped Catra's hand and together they stood and crossed the finish line.
"It's a tie!" called Scorpia. Then, with a wink, she added, "again."
"It's not fun if you both tie every time!" came Glimmer's voice from the communicator Entrapta held.
"But they're so CUTE!" replied Bow.
"Lovin' it, baby girl. Good job to both of you," said Micah, also through the communicator. "Gotta go, talk later!"
"Bye dad!" called Adora in Entrapta's direction.
After giving Catra another quick kiss, Adora pulled her phone out of her pocket and saw that Octavia had tried calling her six times.
"AH!" she said when she had checked her texts next.
"What?" said Catra, suddenly on edge. "Is it Shadow Weaver?"
"Wrong Mom," said Adora, jumping up and down and waving her hands. "Octavia is in labor! She's on her way to the hospital! I'M GOING TO BE A BIG SISTER!"
There was an explosion of noise as Bow, Glimmer, Scorpia, and Entrapta began to yell and cheer.
"We gotta get you to the hospital!" screamed Scorpia, forgetting herself and dropping her clipboard as she looked around frantically.
"Good thing I can drive!" said Catra. She was the most calm in situations like this. To Adora, she said, "Let's get to your house and commandeer the minivan."
"This is why I love you," said Adora, kissing Catra on the cheek.
"For the love of all things living, let's go!" yelled Entrapta, already making her way toward the neighborhood where Adora's house was. She was holding out the communicator so that Bow and Glimmer could be (virtually) part of the action too. Scorpia, forgetting all about the clipboard, chased after Entrapta, delirious from the excitement.
For a moment, Adora just watched her friends' frenzied reactions to the news and smiled to herself. She knew how lucky she was to have this crazy group of companions.
"You coming?" Catra was holding out her hand, waiting.
"Yes," said Adora. She took Catra Stone's hand and off they went to the next adventure, her favorite people by her side.
A/N: I love me some ensemble shenanigans. And there we have it, friends! My gay She-Ra adaptation of the classic DCOM, Cadet Kelly. It only took me a year this time, but NaNoWriMo helped a bunch. I got a complete first draft done in Nov. 2020 and just needed the courage to edit and post. Maybe one day I will be able to write a 100k+ novel fic... but then again, maybe not. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed and thanks for reading! If you have any straight romcoms that you think desperately need a gay makeover, please let me know, as apparently that is my specialty haha!
