Reality

After Cameron Bennett and Lucy Kramer, the social workers, left, Luigi could hardly believe it! He had his very own child! He had waited so long for this! He'd been beginning to think that it would never happen for him. Admittedly, it didn't happen at all how or when he'd imagined it, but it made no difference to him. His biggest dream had become a reality!

Years ago, in Italy, he'd talked about having children with his wife. Sadly, though, that never came into fruition. Their village was hit with hard financial times and, hard as he tried, Luigi just could not make ends meet. They were arguing about it every night.

"(How can you think about having children now?!)" she often shouted incredulously.

"(You don't want children?)" Luigi asked in surprise.

"(Of course I do... but not with someone who can't provide for them)", she explained awkwardly. "(You can't even provide for the two of us.)"

"(I have been trying!)" a hurt Luigi cried.

But his wife shook her hood sadly. "(And look where we are now.)"

As she rolled off, tears filled Luigi's eyes. He just had to face reality: he was never going to be a father.

Now, he'd just filled out the forms to adopt the most beautiful little girl in the world. He was old enough to be her grandfather. So, the old saying was true: Good things come to those who wait.

"Oh, Fudgie!" Luigi whispered softly. "I promise I am going to do the best I can!"
