Here we are! The final drabble in this collection.
Last
Doc knew it . He knew it was his last night.
He had long since come to terms with it and he knew that this night was his time. The only reason he got out of hospital at all was because he didn't want to die there. He wanted to die in Radiator Springs.
"I know that", he had assured the doctors when they informed him ruefully that there was nothing they could do. "I just want to go on my own terms."
Now's the right time, the old Hudson Hornet told himself on this particular starry summer night. The other residents were all there, but Doc was the only one still awake. I've had a great last night; I've said everything I needed to say. My final letter's been mailed to Smokey...
But what about Fudge? he wondered, glancing down at the young girl fast asleep on his hood. How is she gonna get through this? She's so young. She was only ten and she acted a lot younger. And Lightning's like a son to me. He's gonna be devastated.
Well, you can't stay, he reasoned. Much as you want to. No doubt it'll be tough, but they're strong. They'll get through this.
Doc took one last look at his oblivious sleeping family. He didn't want to go. Not at all. But he knew he had to. And if he had to go, he wanted to go with the people he loved the most beside him , even if they were fast asleep and blissfully unaware (most of them probably suspected what was going to happen, but they didn't know when).
Just before sunrise- before anybody else woke up- on a Saturday morning, Doc Paul Hudson closed his eyes and fell asleep with the biggest smile on his face.
And he never woke up.
I feel bad that I ended with a sad drabble, but I hope you enjoyed. Let me know which one was your favourite.
