Unfortunately, I do not own labyrinth, or its characters but the rest are mine.
Her cape blew in the wind, its black silk made her look all the more the demon that she was. The gold crown resting atop her head seemed to make her eyes glow a deep purple. Her flaming hair shaped her face. She wore a solid red dress completing her imperial look.
Adriana turned to face her husband, Craven.
"Must you toy with the new recruits?" Craven drawled.
"But, darling, it's fun to watch them squirm, at least, until they begin to bore me." She smirked.
"Hmm" was his only reply.
Meanwhile inside the labyrinth...
"Aubrey, why is it that you choose to disturb me while there is a runner?" Jareth turned to face the intruder, his sister, the Elven queen.
She stood with a small pout on her face. Her skin a shimmering gold, clothed in an elegant green and white ruffled gown. Her auburn hair was pinned to one side to cascade down her shoulder. She had high cheekbones, naturally arched brows and wide gold eyes. She was relatively petit for a Fae, something that Jareth loved to tease her about.
"Jareth, I have come because of the prophecy. The games are about to begin, and you have not..." She stopped at the glare Jareth was giving her, his eyes glowing with rage.
"I know that I need to choose a bride and I need not be reminded. As for the Games, one of the men in the army will compete." Jareth snarled.
She momentarily gained a thoughtful expression before something clicked into place. A smirk came to her face, making her eyes turn a sinister orange. "Why not have the champion enter?" She asked in an innocent voice.
"No."
"Big brother..."She drawled, "What are you hiding from me? Why can't the champion enter?" She took a bold step forward. Her gown shifted slightly, and the long cloth flowing down her arms moved so that it flowed behind her. In one quick movement, she stood in front of the throne, mouth inches away from her brother's ear "What was her name again?" She whispered.
Jareth noticeably stiffened at the simple question. He internally berated himself for not hiding it well enough, but then again it was his sister. "Who's name?" She stepped back.
"Don't give me that. You know exactly who I am speaking of. Tell me, or so help me, Jareth, I will call Labyrinth herself. Now. What. Is. Her. Name?" She bit out. Jareth sighed, he knew he was fighting a losing battle, so he did what every smart man should do, he caved.
"Her name is Sarah."
"Sarah Williams, Report to the Dean's office at once."
Sarah sighed. It was the first day of the semester and already some students were causing trouble. Now she was being sent to the dean. When she finally reached the office, her ex-boyfriend, Josh, was standing beside the dean's desk with a smug look on his face. Sarah pinched the bridge of her nose.
"What?" She asked.
"Sarah, John, here-"
"Josh." He corrected.
The dean glared at him before continuing, "Josh, here says that you were grabbing him in a sexual way this morning. Is this true?" The dean asked. Sarah stared at the dean blankly for a few seconds before breaking down in laughter. Josh furrowed his brows in frustration, and the dean's mouth twitched.
"I'm sorry... It's just too much." She said between bouts of laughter, "No I did not touch the idiot, in fact - this is the first I'm seeing him all day." She said to the dean before turning her focus to Josh. "If this is your way of revenge for me breaking up with you, then you are a sad case, and we shouldn't have gone out in the first place. Oh and." She stepped closer to him so she could whisper in his ear, "You were no fun to begin with." She turned around so her hair could hit his face before exiting the room, hips swaying just for him.
Sarah continued through the day blissfully unaware of the looks she was currently receiving from her peers. As she trekked toward her house, Sarah ignored the hushed whispers of everyone she passed. Suddenly feeling drained, she entered her home and locked the door behind her.
Sarah's roommate would not be home till after the next morning so, she had the house to herself for tonight. She was asleep before her body hit the bed.
~~~~Sarah's dream~~~~
Slowly, fog crept around her legs, clouding her vision. She carefully stepped forward trying to navigate through the dense fog. Every so often, Sarah would see hints of green but nothing more.
The farther Sarah went, the heavier her body became. Just as suddenly as the fog had come, it cleared. A brilliant light shone through where the fog had once been. There stood a man dressed in black and white.
"Sarah," The man spoke.
"Who are you? H-how do you know me?"
"Sarah, I have known you for centuries." The man stated cryptically.
"Who are you?" She spoke more forcefully.
He stared at her blankly. He seemed to be thinking, trying to find an answer she would be suited with. "You have known me for a very long time. In time you will come to remember me. For now, I have come to bestow a gift onto you." Sarah looked at him skeptically as she took in his answer.
"What sort of gift?" She asked curiously. (Well curiosity did kill the cat.)
The man smiled at her; his eyes glinted mischievously as he raised his hand up and said.
"This is the gift I shall give
In remembrance of the past"
"Farewell little one," The man whispered. With that he vanished. Sarah stared blankly at where he had been moments before.
A piercing pain shot through her back; Sarah cried out as she felt her back-flesh tearing. Her cries grew as she felt her bones shift. The pain worsened when the feeling of her insides being pulled from her belly button joined. Her body lengthened and bones grew out of her back.
Her last thought before she fainted was, "What kind of gift is this?"
~~~~End of Dream~~~~
Sarah's screams echoed through the empty house. Her body thrashed on the bed as her fingers clawed at her skin trying to stop the pain. Blood pooled around her body on the bed, staining the sheets. The bones that had sprouted from her back gained muscle tissue, skin, and soon after feathers. She laid face down on the bed, feathers surround her as they grew and molted gaining age and strength each time. Her wings stretched across the bedroom - an easy fifteen feet.
Sarah's body continued to thrash as her bones broke and healed themselves, becoming lighter, her body shaping to accommodate her new gift. Her clothes tore with all the movement. Finally, she stopped thrashing. Her brain, thinking the onslaught of pain was finished, began to relax only for a fresh onslaught to begin. This time it was at her heart. Sarah screamed as her heart grew and changed the rhythm of its beat.
Her scream of utter pain echoed so loudly that the birds outside her house were startled, her neighbors were frightened, and Jareth doubled over in pain.
~~~~~JSJSJSJSJS~~~~~
Aubrey stared at her brother in shock as he doubled over in pain. Her eyes grew wide in horror as he spat blood onto the throne room floor. Rushing to his side, she helped him regain his balance as another torrent of pain shot through his body.
"Jareth! Jareth! What is it?! What ails you?!" Aubrey asked frantically, "Jareth, please answer me." Jareth stared up at her, his blue eyes coming in and out of focus.
"Sarah." He breathed heavily trying to regain his breath. "She's... She's in pain." He groaned and tried to stand thinking the pain was finished. "I have to go to her. Rules be damned, she needs me."
That's when he heard it, her scream, he felt the shadow of the pain she was in now. He gasped for breath and soon his own scream of pain joined in with hers. Together their screams shook the very core of the underground. The labyrinth herself felt the pain of her king and champion. The walls of the labyrinth began to tremble.
Aubrey stood helplessly watching as her brother fell to his knees in pain. She summoned a sleeping spell to calm him before putting him to rest in his bedchambers. Quickly taking charge of the runner she placed the wished away child in a crib to sleep and the runner in an oubliette for the ten minutes he had left. She silently prayed that the girl would not be in pain for too much longer.
~~~~~~~The next day~~~~~~
Sarah awoke with a start. Her eyes shot open as she sat up. Beneath her hands was something warm and sticky. Wait, warm, sticky, what color? She had a nagging suspicion that she knew what the substance was. Slowly she lifted the palms of her hands into view. On her palm was blood, more specifically her own. Standing swiftly, Sarah walked over to her mirror to inspect herself. Her mind couldn't piece together her missing memories of last night. All she could remember was pain. Just the memory of the pain made her shiver and reject the thoughts. What Sarah saw in her mirror was not in the least what she had expected.
Staring back at her was not Sarah Williams. The creature before her had large pure white wings. She stood tall with obsidian hair reaching her hips in loose curls. The creature's eyes were green but not the gray-green of Sarah Williams, they were a deep green like molten pools of emeralds. Tentatively Sarah reached behind her back to where the wings protruded from her body, feeling smooth skin then hard calloused skin before her fingers met with soft feathers. Trying to test her new wings Sarah flexed her arms, noticing how her wings seemed to shift so to not get hit, Sarah decided to try something new.
If I could move my limbs without a thought maybe I could move these wings as well. Sarah stretched her wings to their full width, her eyes growing wide in amazement as they nearly spread across her entire room. She bit her lip. This is going to be a bit of a problem. I already get enough attention as it is, these wings are going to make it hard to attend my classes. Her wings folded down flat onto her back and if she hadn't already known they were there she would have thought herself completely normal. Sarah looked over at her bed. The sheets were stained badly by her blood, and she didn't need her roommate worrying about her. So quickly she put on an oversized shirt and began to take the sheets off the bed before it had a chance to stain the mattress.
"Sarah! I'm home! Hey, are you okay the neighbors said they heard screaming?" Angel's voice came closer to her door. Angel finally came into view just as she put the sheets into her hamper.
"Hey angel, what's up?" Sarah asked.
"Nothing, the neighbors said they heard you screaming last night. They said you sounded like you were in some serious pain" She watched as Sarah shivered at the memory of the pain. Angel narrowed her eyes. "Sarah, what is it? What are you hiding from me?"
"Nothing," Sarah said a little too quickly. Angel narrowed her eyes which had darkened to a deep brown, almost black. Her eyes began to glow, and her voice became haunting, unlike her own, as if there were more than one person talking.
"Sarah, do not lie to me." Then her voice returned to normal. Sarah was used to this. Angel and she had been friends for a very long time. This wasn't the first time Angel's agitation changed her. That is why Sarah and Angel had become friends in the first place: Sarah knew how to calm Angel. Angel listened to everything Sarah had to say but couldn't. Sarah had even told her about her adventures through the labyrinth and she took it in stride agreeing with her on the labyrinths' existence. Sarah had cried for hours after telling Angel how she regretted what happened between her and Jareth.
"Fine but you asked for it." Sarah said forcefully. Sarah spread her wings out to its full length. It ripped through the thin fabric of the shirt but none the less she watched Angel carefully. Angel frowned before allowing her glamour to slip, revealing herself to Sarah for the first time. Her milk chocolate skin glistened slightly. Her natural eye color had switched from the dark brown of her irritation to a light purple. Above her eyes were silver, gold and purple markings etched into her skin. Like Sarah, she had wings, however, hers matched the markings above her eyes. Her hair now held gold and silver highlights in its black strands.
"Unlike you, I was born with my wings. The people who took care of me named me Angel because of them. My birth parents taught me how to hide their presence when with humans." Angel explained softly.
"What are you?" Angel flinched. "I don't mean it like that. You have markings like Jareth, but you have wings as well." Sarah backpedaled.
"My mother was of Avian decent and had wings, but she was mortal, that is until she met my father. Like Jareth, my father is Fae. And gifted my mother with immortality in return she gave him the power to switch forms in flight."
"Wait. I thought all Fae had that ability." Angel nodded her head.
"I asked her the same question when she told me. You see, like humans, Fae have a social structure. Kings and Queens, Noblemen and women, then what humans call peasants. Those are the lesser Fae. My father was among the lesser Fae at the time, not recognized at all by the nobles. His father, my grandfather, was a noble of sorts and refused to accept him as his son until he proved himself."
"Sounds complicated. I'm going to shower. We can sort this fully when I'm done." Sarah said walking past her friend and down the hall. "I need to figure out if I could get these things wet or if they are dry clean only," Sarah mumbled. She blushed when she heard Angel laughing behind her.
