Chapter 4:Maternity leave
Thirty-two year old Gretchen was on her way to her house when she felt a little twinge.
"Ok, I need to go to the hospital since I do have an appointment with Ginger in twenty-five minutes anyway" Gretchen said to herself. Oh and before I forget I better notify Ferb first."She said to herself as she got her phone out of her pocket.
They arrived at the hospital and Gretchen was waiting in the ER when Ferb came rushing in.
"So, did the baby kick?" Ferb inquired. "Yes." Gretchen replied.
"I'm going back to the cafeteria. I'll see you later." Ferb said as he gave her a gentle hug.
"Oh no you don't, you're coming with me." Gretchen said.
"All right, if you say so." Ferb nodded. "That's right, now sit with me while we wait for someone to come get us."Gretchen said "Also, don't forget to get a nurse when my water breaks."She added.
"I'll remember that; get a nurse over here when your water breaks." Ferb smiled.
A nurse came and put Gretchen in a room with Ferb by her side then Ginger came in.
Ginger came into the exam room to check on Gretchen.
"Gretchen I'll be back with a hot compress for your back." Dr. Tjinder informed her. "Thanks, Ginger." Gretchen said.
Gretchen was waiting for Ginger when her husband Ferb came in
"Hey Ferb, what's up?" She inquired. "Well, Phineas sends his best wishes."Ferb replied. "And Katie says not to worry about your students she'll substitute until you return to work next year."He added.
Gretchen was resting as she was reading To Kill a Mockingbird by, Harper Lee, after being admitted when Dr. Tjinder came in.
"Gretchen judging by the timing of your contractions, I'd say you'll deliver within the next 4 hours."Ginger informed her as she helped her into a wheelchair then escorted her out of the room to the elevators and went downstairs.
"What should I do until my water breaks?"Gretchen inquired as she continued reading. "Relax and do your deep breathing exercises, or walk around the maternity floor, your water will probably break as your baby's being born."Ginger informed her then they heard a loud noise so Gretchen went to the window and saw the building across from the hospital had caught on fire.
Gretchen was walking around the maternity floor of Danville hospital like Ginger suggested when she heard a baby crying so she went to a nurse and let her know about it. "Excuse me, I heard a baby crying."She informed the nurse. "Thank you, I'll have Nurse Brown take care of it."The nurse replied. "You're welcome."Gretchen replied then she went back to walking around the maternity floor.
Gretchen was done with her walk then she decided to do her deep breathing exercises.
Gretchen was in her room watching TV when she felt the worst pain of her life grip her lower abdomen.
"OUCH!"Gretchen yelled as she felt her bladder burst like a water balloon then a nurse came in. "Mrs. Fletcher, are you ok?"She inquired.
"MY WATER JUST BROKE!"Gretchen yelled as she started pushing. "Ok, how long ago did your water break?"The nurse inquired. "ABOUT TEN SECONDS BEFORE YOU CAME IN!"Gretchen replied as she took a deep breath then started pushing again. "Mrs. Fletcher, do you want me to give you some nitrousoxide?"She inquired. "YES, I WANT TO TAKE MY MIND OF THE PAIN!"Gretchen replied just before she felt her nether region start to spread apart allowing the baby's head to start to crown. "Do you want us to get your husband in here?"The nurse inquired. "YES AND FERB BETTER COME IN HERE IF HE KNOWS WHAT'S GOOD FOR HIM!"Gretchen replied with a slight giggle. "AND IF HE DOESN'T THEN I'LL JUST SHOW THE BABY TO HIM IN A FEW HOURS!"She added with another giggle. "Ok Mrs. Fletcher, when you feel another contraction coming give it a light push."The nurse instructed. "OK, I CAN FEEL ANOTHER CONTRACTION COMING!"Gretchen yelled with a giggle as she started to push lightly.
Phineas was doing his paperwork when Milly came in.
"Cap, I think you're gonna need to take the ambulance to headquarterters and have a mechanic look at the engine."She said. "Why do you want me to take the ambulance to headquarters."Phineas inquired. "The ambulance's engine is making weird clanking noises.*The curly brown haired woman informed her supervisor. "Ok, I'll take it to the maintenance garage at EMS headquarters as soon as I get done with my paperwork."Phineas replied. Oh and go take out the kitchen garbage."he instructed. "Ok, I'll do that now, I guess."Milly said as she went to the kitchen to take out the garbage like she was told to.
Milly was visiting Phineas and Katie at their apartment.
"So, is there anything I can help you with?"Milly inquired. "No, not that I can think of. "Phineas replied.
"Oh and dinner is in the oven."He added.
"Go ahead and read a book while you wait for dinner."Phineas said then Katie came back into the room. "Phineas, is dinner ready?"She inquired with a smile."Thanks Phineas."Milly said with a smile as she took a seat beside her best friend at the dinner table.
"Yes but it needs to cool down first."Phineas said with a smile. "Thanks honey."Katie replied as she walked back to their bedroom to use the bathroom.
Katie came back into the room after using the bathroom and sat down next to her husband.
"So, since Milly is going to take her paramedic exam to get her certificate, does that mean she will be a fully trained Paramedic?"Katie inquired.
"Yes dear."Phineas replied as he sat across from Milly offering her a drink. "Sure, I'll have a cup of coffee."Milly replied as she sat down.
"Great, I have a fresh pot of coffee in the kitchen." The thirty year old redhead said as he got up to get the drink for his friend.
"So, is there anything you want to talk about?"Katie inquired. "Well, I was gonna ask Phineas about his second official call as a paramedic."Milly replied.
"I had to get a teenager out of a box freezer with help from the fire department."Phineas replied with a smile. "I hope that teenager was grounded for that."Milly commented.
"Actually I made him promise that he would never do that again."Phineas replied.
"So, after I take my paramedic exam to get my certificate does that mean you won't have to come with me and give me orders on-site?"Milly inquired.
"No, I'm going to assist you on medical emergency calls until you're confident that you can handle things without my help."Phineas replied with a smile.
"I better get going, my niece is spending the night at my house while my sister is gone for that research up at the north pole."Milly informed her friends as she left their apartment.
"Bye Milly."Katie said with a smile then she doubled over in pain as she felt her stomach go topsy-turvy.
"Are you ok dear?"Phineas inquired concerned for his wife. "Phineas, get me a towel."Katie replied as she felt her stomach go topsy-turvy again.
"Ok dear."Phineas replied with a smile.
"PHINEAS FLYNN, GET ME A TOWEL RIGHT NOW!"Katie yelled as she felt her stomach go topsy-turvy once more. Phineas pulled out his phone and dialed 238-429-7293. "Danville School District."The operator said. Phineas looked at his wife, "Get me the superintendent."He said.
4 minutes later
"This is Mr. Flynn calling to let you know that Mrs. Flynn won't be coming in for work tomorrow."Phineas informed him. "She's been throwing up."He added.
5 minutes later Katie was laying down on the couch with a towel on her lap.
"Now dear, get plenty of rest."Phineas instructed. "Oh and you can have chicken soup or broth only."He added with a smile.
15 minutes later Phineas' mom came into the room with Emily holding her left hand. "Hi, Daddy."She greeted her father with a smile.
"Mom, what brings you here?"Phineas inquired. "I just wanted to stop by for a visit."She replied. "Daddy, can I stay home tomorrow."Emily requested. "Actually, you need to be at school tomorrow."Linda replied.
"Okay."Emily said. "Emily, before I forget a Fire Marshal will be stopping by your school tomorrow for a fire inspection."Phineas informed the blonde four year old with a smile.
"I am not going to bug the fire marshal while he's doing that fire inspection."Emily said as she climbed up onto her father's lap and gave him a hug.
"So Phineas, why is Katie on the couch?"Linda inquired. "Well, she isn't feeling well so she will have to stay home from work tomorrow."Phineas informed her. "Let me guess, she's been sneezing?"She inquired.
"Yes, Katie has been sneezing."Phineas replied. "And throwing up."He added. "Daddy, I think I'd better stay away from mommy so I don't get whatever she has."Emily said. "Emily, I was just about to tell you to do that."Phineas replied.
7 hours later
Phineas was playing peek a boo with his daughter.
"Katie could you watch Emily while I go use the bathroom?"Phineas requested with a smile
"Sure dear."Katie replied with a smile then the buzzer sounded, indicating someone was outside wanting to see Phineas so he answered the call, "Hello?"
"Phineas? Is that you? Can we come up?" They recognized the voice immediately. "I'll get it dear."Katie said with a smile.
"Sure, just a moment Adyson." She pressed the code to unlock the front door to the building permitting their friends to enter.
"Hi Adyson." She greeted with a grin. "Hi guys."Adyson replied.
"Hi Adyson." Katie replied as she took a seat on the couch next to her husband.
"Is Milly here?"Adyson inquired. "No, she left to take her paramedic exam at the red cross building downtown so she could get her certificate."Phineas replied. "Also her niece is spending the night at her house while her sister is gone for that research up at the north pole."he added.
"Hi Katie."Adyson greeted. "So, what brings you here?"The blonde haired woman inquired. "Django and I were wondering if either you or Phineas would mind being our wedding planner."The tall brunette replied. "Actually Adyson, I think you should ask Candace since she did a great job planning our Aunt Tiana and Uncle Bob's wedding back when we were kids."Phineas replied.
"Oh, how could I forget that."Adyson said remembering the day she was a guest at Mr. and Mrs. Webber's wedding.
"Well, Django and I have to get going."Adyson said with a yawn as she and Django got up to leave.
Phineas and Katie were headed to their bedroom when Emily walked up to them.
"Daddy, could you open my bedroom window?"The blonde four year old requested. "What's wrong?"Phineas inquired.
"It's getting hot in there."Emily informed her father with a smile. "Okay, I'll open your bedroom window for you."Phineas replied.
"Thanks daddy."Emily said with a smile as she gave her father a goodnight hug.
Emily entered her bedroom and quietly slid under the blanket and put her head on the pillow then turned to her left and went to sleep.
The next day.
Thirty-one-year old Milly Brown was in her living room watching TV when she looked at her watch. "Well, I should go to Phineas' apartment and tell him the good news."She said to herself.
"So, how was your morning?" Phineas inquired. "Well I took my exam at the Red Cross building downtown like you suggested." Milly replied.
"And?" Phineas inquired. "After that I went to visit my brother at the art museum." Milly explained.
"Did you pass your exam?" Phineas inquired. "Yes, I past it with flying colors." Milly replied.
"Did you get your certification?"Phineas said. "Yes, I did."Milly replied.
"Keep in mind I still outrank you."Phineas said. "I'm aware."Milly replied.
