Paige was off in the nursery to get her check up, and Callie was helping her wife get slightly more comfortable. Arizona didn't feel like she could walk to the bathroom to get cleaned up yet, so Callie did what she could to make things a little less uncomfortable. Their children were visiting, and Callie wanted it to go smoothly. Especially because of earlier- she didn't need any more kids scared that their mother was in pain. Realistically, Callie knew Arizona was in an insane amount of pain- and she personally thought her wife was a superhero for putting up with it- but that didn't mean their kids needed to be fully aware of that.
"Are you sure you feel up to see them? It's okay to say no, I understand." Callie didn't want to force Arizona.
"Babe, I want to see them more than anything. I promise if I get tired I'll tell you. They won't be able to stay long anyway, it's late for them." Arizona reassured her wife. It was only 7 o'clock, but their youngest children went to bed in about an hour, so technically, it was late.
"Okay... They should be here any minute." Callie said after checking her phone. "You need me to get you anything else?"
Arizona shook her head. "Thank you."
"Thank you" Callie said before planting a soft kiss on her gorgeous wife's lips. Just as she pulled away, there was a knock on the door, and by the noise outside, the couple knew who was waiting on the other side. God bless Carlos and Lucia Torres for taking their crazy kids to the hospital- it was a lot of work.
"Mama! Mommy!" Cheers of the mothers names filled the room within seconds- the children excited to see their mothers, it had felt like forever in their little minds.
"Hi, babies. Come here, use your inside voices" Callie reminded, specifically looking at Max, who was rather hyped up.
"Did Mommy have the baby?" Summer asked Callie quietly.
"Yeah, she did honey." Callie nodded as she hugged her oldest daughter. "Mommy's okay, you have nothing to worry about. I promise."
Summer nodded but stayed in the corner with her mother. Her siblings were all talking Arizona's ears off- they barely had a clue what was happening.
"Where's the baby?" Lucia asked her daughter, whose arm was around Summer.
"In the nursery, they'll bring her back soon" Callie said with a smile.
"Everything went well?" Carlos asked.
"Yes, perfectly." Callie nodded.
"Good, I'm glad." Carlos smiled before walking away to greet his daughter-in-law, and make sure his grandchildren weren't driving the poor woman insane.
"Oh, I'm so happy for you guys. I cannot wait to meet the baby!" Lucia exclaimed- she loved babies, more specifically her grandchildren. What grandmother wouldn't?
"She sure is a cutie." Callie told her mother as she rubbed Summer's back. The mother was started to get concerned- Summer still hadn't said hi to Arizona. Callie bent down slightly to look her daughter in the eyes. "You can go say hi to Mom, honey. I promise you she's okay."
Summer shook her head. "I'm scared."
"Of Mom?" Callie was confused.
Another head shake. "I don't want her to get hurt."
"She's not hurt, baby, she's okay. Look..." Callie nodded her head towards her wife, who was smiling and talking with Carlos. Most of Summer's siblings had now gotten over the excitement of their mothers and were more content looking around the room, besides Mason, who was in his grandfathers arms, typical for the cuddly toddler.
Summer looked over at her mother, she didn't look like she was hurt.
"Come on, I'll go with you." Callie encouraged, standing up to her full height and holding her hand out to her daughter.
Summer took her mothers hand and walked closer to the hospital bed.
Immediately, Arizona greeted her oldest child with a big, loving smile. "Hey, come give me a hug baby girl" Arizona whispered- she could clearly see her daughter was uneasy.
Summer looked up at Callie before letting go of her hand and climbing onto the bed, finding her place in her mothers arms.
Arizona held her girl close. "I'm very happy to see you."
"Are you hurt, Mom?" Summer mumbled, still needing that reassurance.
"No, I'm okay. And guess what?"
Summer looked up at her mother.
"You have a baby sister."
Summer smiled a little. "Where is she?"
"She should be back soon, and then, do you wanna hold her?"
Summer nodded eagerly, forgetting about her worries, now, she was excited.
Paige's arrival in the hospital room caused extreme excitement all around, the small baby already had an army of love and she didn't even know it. Callie had gone over to pick up her smallest baby from the bassinet, looking at Arizona, who pointed to Summer. Summer had been impatiently waiting since she heard she had a little sister.
"Sums, wanna hold her?" Callie asked softly.
Summer nodded like crazy, holding her arms out. Arizona adjusted and took the baby from Callie to place in her oldest daughters arms. "Hi, sweet girl, your big sister is so excited to meet you. Summer look, she's awake just for you" Arizona had whispered as she placed Paige in Summer's arms.
Summer giggled, holding her sister with only slight aid from her mother. Now, everyone in the room was crowded around the hospital bed, looking at the baby. Callie lifted Max and Olivia onto the bed since they were too small to see, Jackson stood close to her, and Kaylee found a spot right on Callie's hip, her twin brother still happily with his grandfather.
"What's she called?" Jackson asked as he leaned in, hovering his face close to his older sisters to get a better view.
Callie laughed at her sons phrasing. "Her name is Paige."
Summers eyes lit up, that was what she had wanted to name the baby. Her excitement didn't go unnoticed by her mothers. She looked down at her little sister.
"Hey, Paige." Summer giggled. "That was my favorite name." The girl looked up at Arizona, and then over at Callie.
Both mothers smiled at their daughter. Summer looked so proud of herself- it almost made Arizona cry.
A night adjusting to uncomfortable pains and a newborn baby left both Arizona and Callie exhausted the next morning, but, Paige clearly wasn't feeling sympathetic as she woke her mothers up at 8 am after having been up only two short hours ago.
Callie got up from the couch in the hospital room and immediately picked up the baby. "Good morning again" She said tiredly, smiling as Paige calmed down. "Mm I think she just wants cuddles... you can go back to sleep baby" Callie said to her wife, knowing she had it under control, and Arizona needed some extra rest.
"Mmk" The blonde whispered, keeping one blue eye open, watching her wife contently smile and gush over their newest addition. Paige had Callie wrapped around her finger already- which wasn't a surprise. Arizona always loved to see her wife's interactions with their children, and she could already see how much Callie loved Paige. It made her feel all mushy inside.
Callie checked her phone as she held Paige gently, seeing a text from Barbra.
Callie, do you think I could come visit you girls? I would really love to meet the baby.
Callie bit her cheek. Would Arizona want that? Part of Callie wanted to say no, she wanted to let her wife reach out and ask. She was afraid that by Barbra being the one to ask, Arizona would feel forced. That was the last thing she wanted. She looked over to her wife.
"Is everything ok over there?" Arizona whispered when the two made eye contact.
"Mm yeah" Callie nodded, smiling softly. She had to think about this logically- she couldn't spring it on her wife.
"Alright... are you almost ready for breakfast?"
Callie set her phone down, adjusting Paige in her arms as she was now back to sleep. "Are you hungry?"
"Very."
Callie smiled. "Do you want me to run out and get something?" The brunette knew hospital food really wasn't the best- they preferred pretty much anything else.
Arizona nodded, "Please?"
"Of course."
"Aria, I just... don't know" Callie let out a breath. She was waiting at the drive thru of a nearby fast food place- probably not the healthiest, but hey, it was convenient, and Arizona said to get whatever. Callie had called Aria for some advice- she didn't know what to do about Barbra.
"It's not for you to decide, Cal. That's for Arizona to choose." Callie's older sister was right, but that didn't mean the younger woman wanted to listen.
"But, what if she feels forced?"
"She won't."
"How do you know?"
"Because, you're not gonna say 'Hey, Arizona, your Mom is coming to the hospital right now so get ready'" Aria spoke matter of factly.
"But-"
"Look, Callie. I know you probably do know what she would want or what is best for her. But, that doesn't mean you can just make these choices without her. Imagine how you would feel if the situation was reversed. You wouldn't want her to make that kind of choice without you. You'd want her to talk to you about it. Am I wrong?"
"No. But, I just... I don't want her to feel pressured."
"Callie, she won't feel pressured by you simply asking if she wants her Mom to visit, I promise."
"What if it goes terribly wrong?"
"Then next time Barbra asks to see you guys, you'll say no. It's much more simple than you're making it."
"It's not simple, Aria, it's messy and filled with emotions. Years and years worth of Arizona's bottled up emotions about her parents and she just had a baby she needs to relax. Her parents stress her out."
"That's a choice she has to make for herself. She's a grown adult, Callie."
Callie let out a sigh. She knew Aria was right, but part of her had just wished her sister agreed with her- Barbra visiting was a bad idea. She just wanted to protect her wife.
"I just... I don't want to overwhelm her either. You know, she was exhausted after the kids came up last night, and then she was up all night with the baby..."
"Callie, if she doesn't want Barbra to come, she'll tell you. First, you gotta ask her."
"Okay, okay. I'll ask her."
"You better."
Callie sighed, but continued to talk to her sister until she made it back to the hospital, and when she got to the room, bag of food in her hand, her wife was feeding her daughter. Callie smiled, "I'm back" She whispered.
"Mm good. I'm sooo hungry. Smells good" Arizona's eyes lit up at the idea of food, and Callie quickly came to her wife's bedside.
"Looks like Paige is hungry too" Callie said as she opened up the bag.
"She just had a little nap, and then was getting hungry, I think after she's done they're gonna take her back up to the nursery."
Callie nodded and started laying their "meal" out on the overbed table. "Hey, could I ask you something?" She said after she had opened up all the little containers for both of them, seeing her wife immediately start eating.
"What's up?" Arizona said with a full mouth.
Callie smiled at her wife, "Uh, so, your mom texted me."
"And?" Arizona questioned immediately.
"Well, she asked if she would... be able to visit us... here, at the hospital." Callie said hesitantly.
Arizona nodded her head to acknowledge she listened, but didn't say anything else. She kept eating- leaving Callie unsure if the blonde was thinking or ignoring her all together.
"Babe?" Callie asked after a while- hoping Arizona wasn't upset.
"Sorry... I just don't know what to say. What do you think?" Arizona wanted a relationship with her mother, she did, but if something happened or was said, Arizona knew Callie wouldn't hold back. Callie was fed up after last time Arizona saw her parents, and the updates about their newborn were simply to please her wife. Callie did not want Barbra near Arizona.
"I think-" Callie was going to stress that it was a terrible idea, but she remembered Aria's argument with her. "I think if you want her to come, and you feel comfortable, then that's what we'll do. If not, that's ok too."
Arizona's eyes narrowed. That wasn't something her wife would typically say- Callie was very opinionated when it came to the Robbins family- and in Arizona's opinion, she had every right to be. The older couple had screwed Callie over just as much as they had Arizona.
Callie watched her wife, both of them just finishing their food in silence, besides the slight interruption when a nurse came to get Paige.
The couple ignored the issue as Callie helped her wife get out of her dirty hospital gown and out of the bed, allowing housekeeping to change the sheets as Callie helped her wife shower.
As Arizona washed her hair, she looked over at her wife, who was standing in the bathroom, leaning against the wall right next to the shower. Callie wasn't staring at her, in an effort to make her less uncomfortable, but Arizona knew Callie was ready if any help was needed, which was comforting, especially when she felt the way she did.
"Cal-"
"Are you ok? Can I get you anything?" Callie immediately whipped her head around.
"I'm ok... I just... Did my mom say my dad would come too? Or... just her?"
"I'm not sure. She didn't really specify." Callie relaxed when she knew Arizona was ok, leaning back against the wall again.
"I think... maybe if just my mom comes... it'll be okay. but, just for a little bit. Do you think that's ok?"
"If that's what you want."
"Babe, you have a say too. She's not only coming to see me. She's coming to see our daughter. If you don't want her to, I understand." Arizona didn't like how Callie suddenly was acting as though she didn't have an opinion.
Callie let out a sigh, turning to look at her wife again. "I just don't want her to hurt you again. I want everything to go smoothly and if she... if she comes here and says something stupid... it's not gonna go smoothly."
"So, she doesn't visit. We'll see her after we get settled at home with the baby." Arizona said matter-of-factly.
"No, Arizona- That's not what-"
"Calliope. You're right. We should just take it easy, seeing her isn't taking it easy. We can wait." Arizona reached over to turn off the water, so Callie grabbed the towels, stepping in to help again.
"Sit" Callie encouraged, and Arizona did, letting her wife take care of her. "That's what you want?" Callie continued their conversation as she gently dried off her wife, before helping her change into some real, and more comfortable clothes.
"Yes." Arizona nodded, helping Callie the best she could, but her body was exhausted.
Ten Years Ago...
Arizona had given birth to their first born yesterday- without her mother. She had reached this huge milestone in life, without her mother. It was... crazy to think about.
She was crying a lot. Which was understandable for many reasons- she was in an insane amount of pain with all these body changes, she was overly hormonal, and her parents just... well, that was always a reason to cry.
Hence why she was currently standing in the hospital shower, crying in her wife's arms. She couldn't help it. The second they got alone, she was just crying and crying.
"Baby, we gotta get you cleaned up" Callie whispered softly, rubbing her wife's back.
Arizona tightened her grip on Callie.
"Is it okay if I turn the water on?" Callie asked, realizing that there was no way of her getting out of being absolutely soaked after this.
"You'll get wet" The blonde rasped out.
"That's ok. Can I turn it on?" Callie rubbed her wife's back soothingly.
Arizona nodded a little, rubbing her eyes.
Callie leaned over, turning on the water. "Oh it's cold. Hold on" Callie started to adjust the temperature. "Is that better babe?"
Arizona nodded slowly. Her whole body felt exhausted, and the last thing she wanted was to be standing in this shower, but she knew she would feel good after she was clean.
"Okay.. Do you feel okay?" Callie asked, starting to reach for the soap they brought.
Arizona shrugged, holding onto one of Callie's hands. She tried not to pull Callie too close. She knew Callie wouldn't care if she got wet, but she still tried her best to keep Callie out of the stream of water.
"Shampoo! Do you want to wash your hair?"
The blonde started to lean against the wall a little.
"Alright. Do you care if I just do it? The quicker the better." Callie said with a sigh. She understood her wife was going through a lot and was not opposed to helping out whenever she could.
Arizona nodded her agreement and let Callie wash her- her hair, her body. Callie made sure to be very gentle, and once she turned the water off, she let Arizona sit down. She got their towel and dried her off.
"Thank you..." Arizona said, her voice still raspy.
"Don't thank me."
"No... thank you." Arizona was grateful to have a wife who cared about her so deeply. Who was so understanding. Arizona looked up at Callie, smiling softly when Callie gave her her shirt to put on, as she was almost fully dressed. "I love you Calliope."
"I love you too baby. Sit down, I'm gonna change out of this." She said softly, kissing Arizona's cheek before stepping away from her and walking towards their bag, finding herself a change of clothes.
Back to Current...
The couple had been home for about a week, their three oldest children were in school like usual, and their now four youngest children were home- but Callie was also home. So, things were a lot easier.
Today, while the twins and Olivia were napping, Arizona's mother would be visiting. This was the woman's first time at their house, and Arizona was nervous, she wanted things to look nice. Of course, they already did, and Callie would barely let the woman do anything around the house anyway. So Arizona's freaking out was mostly just in her head.
The blonde was currently laying on the couch, holding the baby, which had been a common spot for her-she begged Callie to let her at least be on the couch rather than in their bed. Callie was cleaning up from the kids playing, since they were now napping.
"Are you ready? She should be here any minute." Callie looked toward her wife.
Arizona nodded. "Are you ready?"
Callie shook her head. "I don't think I'll ever be." Callie just wanted her wife to be happy- Barbra made that difficult.
The doorbell rang.
"Better be ready now" Arizona tried to lighten the mood.
Callie flashed her wife a smile before going to the front door and opening it. "Hey, Barbra, come on in."
Barbra hugged Callie, which took the brunette by surprise. "Hi Callie, how have you girls been?"
"Uh... we've been good, thank you. How have you been?" Callie closed and locked the door after the woman was fully inside.
"Good, good. Now, do I get to see this pretty little baby you've been sending me pictures of?"
Callie smiled at the thought of her baby girl, "Yes, of course. Her and Arizona are in the living room... just this way." The brunette led Barbra down the hall and into their living room, where Arizona had slightly sat up, and had Paige rested on her thighs.
"Arizona, dear, look at you" Barbra smiled, immediately going over to her daughter.
"Hey, Mom, how are you?"
"I think a better question is how are you? You look great! Oh, and look at this little one," Barbra leaned over to get a closer look at the baby. "Just the sweetest little thing."
"I'm hanging in there... yeah, she's just napping it up right now" Arizona laughed a little, "Did you want to hold her?" Asking someone to hold the baby always took the attention off of Arizona, and that was somewhat the goal. The young blonde woman still felt rather awkward around her mother, especially after all the things that had been said, and all the years they hadn't seen eachother. Arizona was unsure of how to act around her mother. She was afraid of just being herself- her mother didn't seem fond of that 10 years ago- why would she be now?
"Of course I do! Oh, come here pretty girl" Barbra had smiled, gently lifting the sleeping baby from her daughters lap and standing up to her full height.
Arizona watched, the sight somewhat upsetting her. None of her other babies had gotten this. They barely knew the woman standing in front of her- their own grandmother. It made her upset, but mostly angry. She was angry with herself, with her parents. But, mostly herself. She wished she wouldn't have let it get this far. Of course, in reality she never had control over the way her parents treated her, but Arizona just wished things were different. She had been racking her brain for years to figure out where she went wrong, and she just didn't have a clue. She wished she knew- she wished she could go back and fix it.
Watching her mother with her baby was hard. As weird as that sounded. It felt almost wrong that suddenly her mother was involved again, after wanting nothing to do with them when they had their first baby.
The short hour that Barbra had been there had been nothing but overwhelming for the blonde woman, and she was grateful Callie had proposed waiting until they got home, because a week ago, Arizona definitely wouldn't have wanted to deal with these emotions. The blonde became even more grateful when Callie stood up after ending a conversation with Barbra.
"Alright, it was really nice to see you Barbra. The younger kids are about to wake up... and Paige needs to be fed." Callie could sense Arizona was done. They had had some good and some bad conversations with Barbra, but Arizona was just emotionally overwhelmed.
"Oh! I could help out, give her a bottle?" Barbra suggested.
Callie bit her lip- she didn't think it would be that hard to get her to leave. "Uh... no... Arizona actually... We just, we have a schedule, you know. You kind of have to with a newborn. But, thank you for... offering to help out."
Barbra smiled. "Of course. If you girls need anything just call me, I'm glad to help."
"Thank you, Mom" Arizona smiled, taking Paige back into her arms. "It was nice to see you."
Barbra said her goodbyes and left, leaving Arizona overwhelmed with emotions.
"That was... nice. It went okay, didn't it?" Callie sat down next to her wife.
"Uh... yeah..." Arizona took a deep breath, holding back tears.
Callie looked at her wife, slightly confused. Sure, Barbra had said a few things that put her on edge, but overall she thought it went well. "What is it?" She asked.
"It's just, why now?"
"Why what now, Ari?" Callie tilted her head.
"I don't get why she's so involved all the sudden. Saying she can help out if we need it? Being all over the baby? She... I just... I know it's different now and it's been years but... I hate that when it was any of our other kids, she wasn't around."
Callie sighed. "Me too, but, she's around now. We gotta be glad, at least the kids can still know her. Right?"
"I guess." Arizona shrugged, she just felt like she had done something wrong- that she could've done something to change that. All of her children deserved to have their grandmother be involved in their whole life- it just sucked.
