"And what's going on in your life lately?"
Blaine disinterestedly picked at his food when Sebastian posed him that question.
"Nothing special. I just go to school every day – that's all" Blaine took a big gulp of his lemonade so that he didn't need to talk anymore. "And what about you?"
Sebastian smiled at him naughtily. "Oh, I had that threesome with two other demons. They both had abs like Abercrombie models and were hot as well."
Blaine begrudgingly cut his steak into little pieces without eating anything. Listening to Sebastian brag about his love life was the last thing he wanted to do now. Why did he agree to this again?
…
Actually, Kurt had still no idea how exactly Mercedes' scepter worked. Why didn't he ask her last time? He so regretted it now that a firewolf was chasing him late at night. That was not at all how he imagined spending a Friday night.
Now that it was dark outside, he was faster because the sun couldn't weaken him, but he was still no match to Finn who was slowly catching up with him. So Kurt stopped and turned to him. In the meantime, they were at a deserted forest, and if he weren't already dead, Kurt would be scared shitless.
Determined, he held the scepter to Finn's direction. "Don't force me to use that thing", he said threateningly. "I could seriously hurt you, okay?" He slowly put down the weapon and lifted his hands in surrender. "Listen, Finn, we don't need to do this. We are brothers, we are not supposed to maul each other. We always had each other's backs, right?"
Finn cocked his head to the side, he seemed to think about it.
"Whatever is going on in your head- fight it. The Finn I know would never just attack me like that, and you know that." Kurt looked at him and Finn looked back – until he growled again and lunged at the zombie.
Kurt dodged his attack and narrowed his eyes. "Alright, then. You didn't want it the other way." He took the scepter, turned around, and started running again. Looked like he needed to stick to plan A.
Luckily, they had already arrived at his destination – the river, he could already hear the water rush.
"Come on, Finn!", he shouted and ran over to the shore. "You want me? Come get me." Kurt stopped and turned around, looking him in the eyes directly. "What are you waiting for?"
Finn took the bait and lunged at him, and they both fell into the flowing water behind him. Perfect, that was exactly what he wanted. He didn't need to be a genius to know that firewolves didn't like water. Even though the water was cold, Kurt didn't care. As someone who was dead anyway, he was unfazed by the cold temperature of the river. But he couldn't say the same about the firewolf. His eyes had widened in shock and he yelped.
"Try to hold on to my scepter!", Kurt shouted and held it to his direction. Easier said than done, the waves made it hard for both of them to keep their heads over the surface. Finn did as he said, and Kurt kicked with his legs with all he got to get them both to the shore again.
When he finally did it, Kurt dragged himself to the lawn, threw the scepter into the grass, and laid down on his back. Yes, he couldn't get exhausted that much, but nevertheless, he kind of felt mentally tired out. Finn followed suit, looking at him with regret. He seemed to have come to senses again after the zombie kind of saved his life.
"It's okay, I forgive you", Kurt said with a faint smile. "But don't do that ever again, or else, I can't guarantee for nothing."
For a while, they were lying on the grass silently, looking at the star-covered sky and listening to the cicadas.
Kurt couldn't help but smile a bit because of the scene. A zombie and a werewolf were lying next to each other, looking at the stars. Ha. How pathetic. When he noticed that Finn threw him a questioning glance, he noticed that he had said those words out loud. He sighed.
"I guess it's time for me to tell you what I am. Yes, I'm a zombie since I got murdered seven months ago. And yes, supernatural monsters such as demons exist. But that's an entirely different story." Kurt gazed at the pitchblack sky and turned to the other boy again. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier, but you know, I wanted to spare you all that." He sat up when something came to his mind. "What are we going to tell our parents? Sam and Puck told me they couldn't turn back on their first full moon until the sun rose the next day. And yes, they are werwolves."
Finn threw him a questioning glance. Great to see that at least one of them stayed calm. With another sigh, Kurt looked over to the direction they had come from. "Looks like I need to disturb Blaine's date."
…
Blaine's phone vibrated while Sebastian was about to tell him about the yacht he had stolen from an innocent elderly couple. He deeply regretted having dated that guy in the past. Anyway, when he checked the text Kurt had sent to him, his eyes lit up. Finally, he had an excuse to escape that intolerable date.
"I need to go", he said with a beam and got up. "It's a family emergency."
Sebastian pouted. "But I still didn't tell you the best part."
"You know what, Sebastian? I don't care about your superficial stories. I don't care about your dumb lifestyle as a demon. I will go to the people that truly care about me, not about my status as the demon prince. Have a nice evening."
Now, he had said more than he wanted to, but what could he say, the other demon was just driving him nuts! He just needed to tell him off.
Sebastian stared at him perplexedly when the other demon put a couple of dollar notes on the table and left the restaurant.
…
"What are we going to do now?", Blaine asked while Kurt was driving with Finn on the backseat. "And how did that even happen?" He nodded to the backseat where the werewolf fell asleep in the meanwhile.
"I have no idea. But I think one of Sebastian's firewolves might have scratched or bitten him and we didn't notice."
"And do you think this is going to be temporary, or permanently?"
Kurt just shrugged helplessly. "I hope he will change back tomorrow again, like Sam and Puckerman. If not, we have a big problem."
"That's true." Blaine pensively looked out of the window and sighed. "That's my fault. If it weren't for me, Sebastian never would have shown up with his pets to win me back. I feel guilty."
"Hey, none of this is your fault", Kurt answered him back determinedly. "If anything, your ex is to blame, not you. He never should have put us in danger just to get you back. That was wrong."
But Blaine still couldn't do anything about the pangs of remorse in the pit of his stomach. Feeling these emotions was new territory to him. Back then, he never, ever regretted anything. He never felt bad for all the crap he had done, no matter how bad it was. Could it be that he was about to mellow?
"Where are we even driving?", he asked Kurt to distract himself.
"My granddad has that secret treehouse in the woods. I also packed a thermos bottle of hot chocolate, blankets, and snacks so that Finn and I can spend the night there. You will drive back home and pick us up tomorrow, okay?"
But Blaine shook his head fervently. "No way, I'm going to stay here with you and not leave you alone out here in the woods. That's the very least I could do. What will I explain to your parents if you get eaten by bears?"
At that, Kurt needed to laugh. "I'm a zombie, Blaine, I don't even have a beating heart. I guess they are not interested in eating something dead, and even if they were, the worst thing that could happen to me were a couple of scratches. Besides, Finn is twice the size of a grizzlybear."
"I won't go home without you, okay? We are all in this together, somehow."
"Do you really want to sleep on the hard floor of a treehouse instead of your warm bed?"
Blaine shrugged. "Could be worse. I will come with you, period."
Kurt, too tired to fight with the other boy, nodded, concentrating on the road again. "Alright, you won. But don't tell me afterwards I didn't warn you."
…
Sleeping on the cold woody floor was indeed pretty uncomfortable, but they made the best out of it. Finn fell asleep again as soon as they had entered the treehouse, and the other two boys tucked themselves into their blankets and sipped on their hot chocolates.
"You are a good brother", Blaine eventually broke the silence, and Kurt looked at him.
"Do you think so?"
"Oh yes. My older brother Cooper doesn't care about me. As if I didn't matter to him. We are not that close."
Kurt sighed. "I'm sorry to hear that."
"I guess it's my fault as well. I never tried to take a step towards him. I always considered myself the victim and waited for him to get it right again, but it never happened."
"You were too young to understand. You are not to blame."
"Yes I am, but it doesn't matter anymore. Our relationship cannot be saved anymore, even if we wanted to, and I'm completely fine with that."
Kurt looked down his cup before he confessed: "Before our parents married, Finn and his friends used to bully me. Yes, he never really participated, but that he never told them to stop didn't make it better. We only started getting along better when we were in highschool, and now, we are something like…friends. That's proof enough that there is hope for everyone."
"Not for me and Coop, sadly." Blaine leaned back on his pillow and looked out of the dirty window. "It's not that bad here, actually. Whether we can stay here forever?"
"So that we don't need to face reality? Yes, sure, why not?" Kurt laughed a bit. "We could move in here for all I care."
"With the right interior decoration, I would agree. Maybe patch things up here and there and do the cleaning", Blaine added when he looked at the spiderwebs in the corners. "Why do you even have a blanket? Zombies cannot freeze to death", he pointed out.
But the other boy just shrugged. "I like snuggling. That's a habit I will never get rid of. Why are you asking? Are you feeling cold?"
"No, I'm not!", Blaine protested, maybe a little too loud.
Kurt shook his head. "Come over here, demon. I don't want you to die because I wasn't willing to share my blanket."
At first, Blaine was reluctant, but then again, the other blanket looked so inviting…So he scooted closer to the zombie until they made body contact, and Kurt put his own blanket around him as well.
"Better?"
"Yes. Thanks."
"Sure."
Kurt looked at him and smirked a bit. "I told you to stay at home, but you wouldn't listen. You can still leave, though."
"Hey, I'm right where I want to be, okay?", Blaine said stubbornly. "There is no need to talk me out of it anymore. I've already made up my mind."
Suddenly, their faces were closer to each other than a couple of seconds ago. Blaine looked into Kurt's blue eyes, having a feeling to drown inside them. Had they always been so enthralling, so vivid? They came closer to each other, closer and closer, and their lips touch-
Finn moving in his sleep made them jump apart.
Blaine cleared his throat sheepishly. "I…uh…think we should maybe…go to sleep?"
Kurt looked at him as if he was an alien, until he nodded quickly. "Yes, right. Sleep sounds… reasonable. But I'm a zombie, so I don't need to-"
"Right", Blaine cut him off, suddenly feeling dumb.
So they had almost kissed, what's the big deal? He had already kissed tons of demons and compelled humans before him and never was that nervous about it. Hell, he had kissed Sebastian thousands of times without a care! But this time felt so different. This almost-kiss confused him. Was it right to start something with a zombie? He had no idea.
But now was not the right time to think about it.
Now, they needed to make sure that Finn turned back to normal again. And think about what to tell his host parents tomorrow if they weren't successful.
