"Are you okay?"
Vincent stopped rubbing his temples and turned to look at Cami, his eyes weary. "It's just the spell that I used to connect with Inadu," he explained. "Obviously I wasn't going to meet with her in person, so I had to use an astral projection spell. It took a lot out of me."
"You should rest for a while."
He shook his head, dismissing the idea. "I can't. There's no time. I have to prepare for the unlinking spell." He flipped through the pages of one of his grimoires as he spoke.
Cami rubbed her sweaty palms against her trousers, trying to keep calm as she asked, "So, it's all happening later then? Inadu is really going to come here?"
He didn't bother to look up from the grimoire. "Yeah. She knows that undoing this linking spell is the only way to move forward. Freya is getting Death back here. We'll hide Death before Inadu gets here, then after the linking spell is broken, Death will come out and take Inadu to the afterlife before she can do anything to you or Davina."
"I hate to be negative here, but it sounds like there's a lot of chances for things to go wrong in this plan." If Death didn't get to Inadu at the right time, everything would go wrong. Not to mention, this whole plan was hinging on Freya being able to get Death back to the abattoir before Inadu arrived. They didn't even know where Death had gone off to, so unless Freya could use some sort of spell to find them, the whole plan was going to fall apart.
He exhaled loudly through his nose and glanced over at her. "It's risky. I'm not going to lie, but it's our best option. It'll work out. Don't worry."
That didn't really alleviate her fears, but she had to trust him. Vincent was a powerful witch and if he said all of this would work out, it had to.
"Apart from Inadu, have you figured out who else you're going to give to Death as your replacement?" Vincent asked.
"That is all I've been thinking about." Cami ran her fingers through her hair, from scalp to ends. "Klaus said that he's going to find someone, but knowing him, he'll just grab someone off of the street."
"And from the look on your face, I'm assuming you have a problem with that idea?"
"You don't?" she countered. "Would you be okay with an innocent person dying for you?"
Vincent's eyebrows lifted in agreement. "I wouldn't, but let's not pretend that there are a lot of "innocent" people around here." He snorted. "Just get Klaus to grab the nearest vampire."
Cami shot him an unsure look, although he was already back to looking at his grimoire, so he didn't notice.
Something smashed through the front door of the abattoir, startling Cami from her thoughts. She span around to face the courtyard and to see whatever the disturbance was.
Kol laid on the ground of the courtyard, groaning as he slowly started to push himself up into a sitting position. Rebekah stood proudly in the entrance of the abattoir and watched her brother squirm on the floor. It seemed that Kol had been the thing that had gone flying through the front doors, apparently having been thrown by his little sister.
"Kol!" Davina yelled out as she ran out from behind Rebekah and went over to crouch by him. Cami eyed the two of them carefully. She wasn't sure whether Davina and Kol had come with Rebekah willingly or if Rebekah had forced the issue. From what she could see, it seemed like it was the latter and in that case, she was prepared to watch a full Mikaelson blowout.
"Damn it, Rebekah," Kol hissed, focused on Rebekah rather than Davina who fussed over him. "Was that really necessary?"
Rebekah smiled. "No, but it was fun."
Davina stood back up and stepped between Kol and Rebekah, scowling at Rebekah. "I said I'd come with you and that Kol would follow me. You didn't need to attack him."
"Oh, that was hardly me attacking him, you silly girl." Rebekah's eyes rolled.
Steeling herself in front of Kol, Davina glared. "If you touch him again, I will break your neck."
Rebekah couldn't stop herself from letting out a little laugh. "Is that seriously your worst threat? Breaking my neck? Hope could probably come up with something more frightening."
"Well, well, well," Klaus' voice rang out as he trotted down the staircase and approached Kol. "If it isn't my little brother. Back from your spontaneous vacation already?" he mocked, a tight smile on his lips.
Kol quickly pushed himself up onto his feet to face his brother. "It seemed like the best idea at the time. Are you telling me that running away didn't occur to you either?"
"No, it didn't." Klaus' smile and any trace of amusement disappeared from his face. "It didn't occur to me to abandon our family."
"I had to protect Davina," Kol snapped.
"And so you left the rest of us here to face our enemies, you coward," Klaus sneered.
"Klaus?" Cami carefully started to approach him. He glanced over at her briefly but returned his attention to his brother when Kol stepped closer to him.
Getting in Klaus' face, Kol said, "Insult me again and see what happens, brother."
In the face of Kol's threat, Klaus just smiled. "I'm shaking in my boots."
"We don't have time for this," Cami interrupted their little confrontation.
Klaus and Kol remained silent and stared each other down for a moment. Cami had to restrain herself from rolling her eyes at their little argument. They were acting like bickering children. If they weren't careful, this could turn into a real fight between the two.
Klaus let out a slow breath, still looking at Kol. "Freya called. She's on her way back with Death now. Apparently, Death is being rather agreeable." He finally turned to look at Cami. "You're right. Everything is going to happen quite quickly now. I'll go grab someone to be your replacement."
Davina gently nudged Kol round to face her and pulled him away from Klaus, the two of them starting to whisper to each other, although Cami wasn't paying enough attention to figure out exactly what they were saying.
Klaus turned to walk away, off to find Cami's replacement for their bargain with Death, but Cami darted in front of him.
"No, Klaus. I can't let some innocent person on the street die for me," she said.
He sighed impatiently. "Camille, we don't have the time for this. Death and Inadu will be here soon. We need to find your replacement now."
He moved to go past her, but she placed her hand on his chest to stop him again. "I know. I know we do," she conceded. "But I won't be able to live with myself afterwards if someone innocent dies for me."
"So shall I bring you a full background check as well to prove that they're not some angel on earth?" he snapped. "We need to get this sorted out now. I won't risk you again." He looked over at Davina, who was still talking to Kol. "Inadu should be your replacement, not Davina's. I doubt Davina would be having some moral debate about who her replacement would be."
She didn't like the look in Klaus' eyes, as if he was debating throwing Davina under the bus. The two hardly got along, so it wasn't exactly surprising.
He barely knew Davina, but Cami did. She knew that Davina would struggle with allowing an innocent person to die for her, the same way Cami was currently struggling.
"She would be," Cami insisted, "but that's not the issue because Inadu will be her replacement." She couldn't allow Klaus to think there was any wiggle room there, otherwise he'd try to make Inadu Cami's replacement instead and leave Davina to figure out her own situation.
Klaus threw his hands up with exasperation. "Then I'll go find your replacement now."
Cami's mind raced as she moved to stop him again. She couldn't think of a suitable replacement. It had to be someone that she knew was evil, so that she wouldn't feel as guilty about giving them over to Death. The problem was that after being dead for the past few years, she didn't know who was evil in New Orleans and who wasn't anymore.
"You two do realise that there's another option, right?" Rebekah said, evidently having been listening to their conversation.
Klaus and Cami both stopped and turned to look at Rebekah. "What other option, Rebekah?" Klaus asked. Cami held her breath while she waited for Rebekah to tell them whatever it was that she'd thought up.
Her lips turning up at the corners, Rebekah said, "You don't need to go out and find a replacement for Cami. I have the perfect person already."
