It had been a few days since Kyle had been admitted to hospital and the police had taken a statement from Blake and looked over the CCTV in the area around where it happened. The Braxton's still had no idea who actually did it but had been told that the police were close to making an arrest. It had also been a few days since Lucas and Emily had gone home, neither wanting to leave Kyle's side in case he woke up.

Northern Districts Hospital - Day 4

"Hey." They hear from the doorway, Blake walking in.

"Hey." Lucas mutters.

"How are things looking this morning?" Blake asks.

"No change. The doctor came in about an hour ago and said they'll be reviewing Kyle's vitals today, so we might know more soon." Emily says as Lucas stays quiet.

"Have either of you left since I last came here?" Blake asks, having a feeling he knew what the answer was.

"No." Emily shakes her head.

"Why don't we go and get some breakfast from the cafe. Maybe some fresh air will do you both some good as well." Blake says.

"I'm not leaving him." Emily says.

"I can bring you something back then. Lucas, you can help me." Blake says.

"I can't." Lucas mutters.

"Come on, we won't be long." Blake says, Lucas reluctantly going with him. "How have you been?"

"I don't know." Lucas shrugs. "Haven't really had a chance to think about myself." He says, glancing down the corridor to see his family walking towards them.

"Has there been any changes?" Heath asks as they all stop in front of the pair.

"No, the doctor said he'll be able to tell us more soon but he still can't be sure if there's any change." Lucas mutters.

"Where's Emily?" Bianca asks.

"She wouldn't leave. I just about managed to get Lucas to leave so we could go down to the cafe." Blake says.

"Lucas, you should be going home to get some proper rest. We'll call you when the doctor comes to tell us more." Brax says.

"I can't leave Kyle, I need to be here." Lucas says.

"Luc, we'll call you as soon as we know more. You need to rest or you'll be joining Kyle here." Tyler says.

"Go, Tyler's right." Heath says, Lucas eventually nodding. "Try not to worry 'ey."

"Yeah." Lucas mutters before walking off down the corridor with Blake.

"Do you think the doc will have good news?" Heath asks as they carry on towards Kyle's hospital room.

"We can only hope." Brax mutters as they reach Kyle's room, seeing Emily sitting on the chair next to him.

"Emily needs some rest as well. She's barely slept or ate since the other day." Ricky says.

"She won't leave him, not with the odds against Kyle waking up." Heath says, all of them glaring at him. "What? It's the truth isn't it? You heard the doc, Kyle's injuries were too severe."

"What happened to staying hopeful that something good will happen?" Ricky asks.

"With the luck in this family?" Heath scoffs before quickly walking away.

"He's just scared of losing Kyle, please don't think he believes that." Bianca says before going after him.

"Brax, you're here." Nate says as he walks over to them.

"Is this about Kyle?" Brax asks.

"Yes, I've gone over the results of the monitoring we've been doing over the last few days." Nate says.

"We should call Heath and Lucas back." Ricky mutters.

"This will be the first bit of rest Lucas has had for a few days." Tyler says.

"What's the results?" Brax asks, unable to wait for his brother's to come back, he just needed to know if his brother was going to be okay. "We should go in so Emily can hear." He says, seeing she had noticed them standing outside, so they all walk in.

"Is Kyle going to wake up?" Emily asks.

"Kyle's condition has moved out of the critical stage, but I'm afraid we still can't say if he'll wake up as there were no other significant improvements. We will still monitor his condition carefully for any new improvements, but we can't get ahead of ourselves yet." Nate explains.

"But if he's out of the critical stage, that's good." Emily says.

"That is good but it's not a big enough sign for us to know if Kyle will wake up. His condition is still severe and unless we see an improvement in the next week-"

"Don't say it." Brax says, having a feeling he knew what was coming.

"Say what?" Tyler frowns, not understanding.

"If there are no improvements, as a family you would need to come to the decision on what happens next in Kyle's care." Nate says. "But we've got time before we need to start talking about that step."

"But you think we're going to need to talk about it." Brax says, Nate lightly nodding.

"I've seen injuries like this before in similar circumstances, only a handful have survived and their recovery has been tough. Despite Kyle's brain surgery going well, it was still a bad bleed. I just need you to be aware that things might not go the way we want." Nate says, knowing this would be tough on them.

"Thanks Nate." Brax lightly nods before focusing on Kyle, and any change he might see himself, even if it was a tiny movement.

Braxton House

"Okay, thanks for letting me know." Lucas says down the phone to his eldest triplet as he wipes some tears away. "No, I'm fine. Just let me know if anything else happens. Blake is still here, I'll be fine. Okay, see you later." He says as he hangs up, trying to keep himself together.

"Was that Tyler?" Blake asks as he walks over to Lucas, sitting on his bed next to him.

"Yeah… Apparently the doctor doesn't think Kyle's got a chance at waking up because of his injuries." Lucas says. "But it's only been a few days, they can't tell that early can they?"

"They're experienced in this kind of thing. There's still time." Blake says.

"What do I do without him?" Lucas sobs, letting Blake pull him into a hug.

"I'm so sorry." Blake sighs.

"What for?" Lucas asks between sobs.

"Some woman was having a go at him before I got called into work. I should have made sure he was going to be okay after it before I left. Maybe this wouldn't have happened." Blake says.

"No, it wasn't your fault. No one knew this was going to happen." Lucas shakes his head, looking up at Blake.

"It doesn't make me feel any better. I was the last person to have properly spoken to him." Blake says, briefly glancing down before looking at Lucas. "He was talking about having his first birthday with you and Tyler, he was so excited about being able to officially change his birthday, for it to be the same as yours. I've known him for a long time now, and that was the happiest I'd ever seen him. He had got his life on track now, his counselling was going well and he had a family he loved. He won't give that up, he'll fight to survive."

"I love him too, and not just because it meant I wasn't the youngest anymore." Lucas lightly smiles. "I really hope he does fight to survive, I haven't known him long enough."

"Yeah, he wasn't happy about having two more older brothers to boss him around but he didn't really mind." Blake smiles, thinking back to what he had been speaking to Kyle about before they left Angelo's. "You know Kyle told me you've got a huge crush on someone we know."

"He told me he wouldn't say anything!" Lucas says as he sits upright a bit more. "Did he tell you who it was?"

"No, he said he didn't know who it was but had an idea." Blake says.

"That's good, and I didn't tell him a name but he must have known." Lucas says as he thinks to himself. "He would have told me if he knew who it was."

"Not if he wanted to be certain first."

"What if I don't get to tell him anything else?" Lucas sighs, glancing down as he fiddles his fingers together.

"You can't think like that, we have to stay positive until the doctors are certain there's nothing else that can be done." Blake says. "But you need to get some proper rest, so I'll give you some space."

"Could you stay, I really don't want to be alone right now?" Lucas mutters.

"Sure." Blake nods.

"You've been great to Kyle, I hope you know you mean a lot to him, you're his best mate." Lucas says, tiredness taking over.

"Kyle's my best mate, I'd do anything for him." Blake says. "The least I can do is make sure you don't make yourself ill by not looking after yourself. Now get some sleep, I'll be right here if you need anything, and I'll let you know if there's any news while you're asleep." He says as Lucas shuffles down the bed.

"Thanks." Lucas says, trying to block bad thoughts out as he drifts off to sleep.
