First thing the next morning, Tyler and Kyle had both been taken into surgery. Tyler was just as freaked out as he was the day before, never having needed surgery for anything before. He soon forgot his nerves as he remembered what good it would do, thinking about the positive of Kyle possibly waking up soon after the surgery. He'd also decided with Lucas that they were going to wait to celebrate their birthday, wanting Kyle to be awake and celebrate with them.
Northern Districts Hospital - Day 22
"How much longer do you think they'll be in surgery?" Lucas asks, not liking that both of his triplets were in surgery as he knew there could be complications, but he also knew deep down they would be okay.
"It's been a few hours now, I doubt it would be much longer." Brax says, having been told by Nate that Kyle might be in recovery a little longer due to his condition before the surgery. "Nate was going to put them in a room together, so at least you can see them at the same time." He says, seeing how nervous Lucas was, and they could all understand it.
"Why don't you go on your phone again? It hasn't stopped going off all morning." Heath says.
"It's our friends. They're wishing us a happy birthday and wishing good luck on the surgery. Red text saying he's back in town and wants to come and see Kyle soon. Some of the others are saying the same." Lucas says.
"Wait, Red's back in town?" Casey frowns.
"Yeah, did he not text you?" Lucas asks.
"Nope." Casey shakes his head.
"I'm not surprised that he's avoiding us after skipping town like he did. He's probably realising what a stupid idea it was." Blake says.
"Yeah, sounds like him." Casey says.
"Why's he called Red?" Heath asks.
"It's a nickname, I can't actually remember how it started." Casey says, glancing at Blake to see if he could remember.
"I do." Blake smirks. "It started not long before you started hanging out with us. He was going through a really superstitious stage where he wouldn't do anything that he thought would bring bad luck. One day he decided he wasn't going to follow it anymore, so walked under a ladder. A tin of red paint fell off the top of the ladder, covering him it in. It just stuck from then on." He says, laughing as he thinks back on it.
"Oh yeah, I remember George telling me that now." Casey scoffs. "But I think it would be good for everyone to get together once Kyle's well enough."
"Yeah, I think he'd like that." Brax says as the door to the relatives room opens. "Nate." He mutters, them all standing up to face him.
"They're both fine, the surgeries were textbook." Nate smiles at the relief on all of their faces. "Kyle's body has taken Tyler's kidney really well, there's no sign of rejection."
"Can we see them now?" Lucas asks.
"I think you'll want to, yes." Nate nods with a smile, leading them down to the room Kyle and Tyler were put in after being moved from recovery.
"So they're really going to be okay? Kyle will be okay?" Brax asks as they follow Nate.
"They're going to be fine. Kyle will need to take anti-rejection meds for the rest of his life, but he'll be fine. He not shown any signs of serious brain damage and his scans came back clear." Nate says. "They're just down here." He says, walking a little further before stopping at one of the doors. "You need to let them rest, so try not to keep talking too long." He says as they all walk in.
"Kyle!" Heath beams, tears springing to all of their eyes. "You're actually awake now?"
"Yeah." Kyle weakly mutters, flittering his eyes over to the door as they all walk in. "Why are you all crying?" He weakly asks, not knowing what the fuss was about.
"Are you joking?" Heath scoffs, shaking his head as he wipes his eyes dry. "You're really asking that?"
"Yes?" Kyle frowns.
"Don't worry about it." Brax smiles.
"You really scared us so much." Emily weeps, taking his hand in hers. "You scared me."
"Sorry, for whatever I did to be in here." Kyle says. "Why am I in here?"
"It's a long story." Tyler says, knowing he didn't need a lot of information when he'd barely been awake five minutes.
"Well happy birthday." Lucas grins. "We'll celebrate properly once you're feeling a lot better."
"Just no alcohol. Kyle can't have any with the anti-rejection meds, we don't want him going through another transplant if things were to take a turn." Nate says.
"Of course, we don't need to be coming back here again once Kyle is discharged." Lucas says, smiling at his triplets with relief that they were okay.
"I'll leave you to it, just make sure you both get rest." Nate says to Tyler and Kyle before walking out.
"How are you feeling?" Lucas asks Tyler.
"A little rough, but other than that I feel great." Tyler smiles. "I don't know why I was getting so worked up over it, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be."
"But why did I need a kidney transplant?" Kyle asks, them all glancing between each other.
"You need to get some rest." Emily says, sitting on the best next to him. "It's been a really horrible time, that's all you need to know."
"I'm not resting until I've been told why I'm here." Kyle says as firmly as he could.
"You were run over about three weeks ago at some speed. It left you with serious injuries, including a bad head injury and internal injuries, also the broken leg which I'm sure you know about. It left you on life support after the surgery." Brax starts. "As time went on, you weren't getting better, and then we were told to start thinking about turning the life support off, which we obviously didn't want. Then they day we had to come to a decision, something weird happened and we were told you'd been taken off life support because you were getting better. Of course you had to take longer in waking up, a kidney transplant being the thing to do it, but Nate said you're going to be fine now."
"Sounds pretty full on." Kyle mutters, glancing at Emily. "I'm sorry for putting you through that, all of you."
"It's okay." Emily smiles. "You're awake now, that's all that matters. And Brax has been pretty great to me, you're lucky to have a big bro like him."
"Not that again." Brax jokingly rolls his eyes.
"What?" Kyle asks.
"Brax won't admit in front of everyone else that I've become his favourite person." Emily grins.
"Really? I've missed that much?" Kyle smiles.
"You have." Emily nods.
"You haven't." Brax shakes his head. "There's only one chick in my life, and she's stood right here." He says, putting an arm around Ricky's waist.
"Good answer." Ricky smiles, leaning up to kiss him.
"Well can we say something now we're all here, and all awake?" Heath asks, taking Bianca's hand.
"Sure, go for it." Brax nods.
"Well, I think the first lot of news is something some of you have wanted to know for a long time." Heath says, smirking at certain people.
"Which is?" Casey asks.
"We're having a boy." Bianca smiles. "You'll have a nephew running about the place real soon."
"Finally! I was wondering how long it was going to take you to tell us considering you're getting so close to your due date now." Lucas smiles. "So what's the second news? It's not triplets as well is it?"
"No!" Bianca laughs.
"We're engaged." Heath grins.
"You're what?" Casey exclaims. "Since when?"
"Well it happened the day Kyle was… That's why we wanted everyone to get together that night, but it didn't feel right telling everyone with Kyle in bad shape. We were also looking for a place of our own, had narrowed it down to a few places around the Bay." Heath says. "But we're engaged, having a baby boy and could have our own place soon, my life couldn't be better now."
"I'm glad you didn't make us wait even longer." Kyle lightly smirks, his eyes slowly starting to close as he falls asleep.
"We'll all rest well tonight." Ricky smiles before turning to Tyler. "You should get some rest as well, let your body heal."
"I do feel really tired." Tyler says, getting a bit more comfortable before falling asleep.
"We should all go home and get some proper rest now we know they're going to be okay, now Kyle is finally awake." Ricky says.
"I'm not leaving, but you go." Brax says.
"I'm staying as well." Emily says as she carefully lies down next to Kyle, not wanting to disturb him.
"There's no way I'm leaving." Lucas says.
"Well the rest of us will. We'll be back first thing tomorrow morning." Heath says. "You call me if anything happens, the second anything happens." He says.
"We will. Go get some rest. You need it the most right now, you won't be getting any soon." Brax says as they all say bye before leaving.
