4x16 (part 2)
A/N: This is a continuation of the last chapter. I may write a third part of this, I haven't decided yet, because I'm not sure I like the idea I have for it. And I love open-ended stories, you know, leave the rest to the imagination. Honestly, I wasn't planning on part two either, but I was so grateful for your encouragement (station19fan and surrerapooshh), that here it is.
Thank you for reading! I hope you like it.
"Our what?" Robert asked, confused. She didn't answer right away and even broke eye contact with him. "Andy"
She was so mad, but she knew it wasn't fair to hide something like that from him. She couldn't. "Our baby" She repeated, her voice cracking with emotion. Has he heard her alright? A baby? Their baby?
Before the new information sank in, she talked again. "I need to go."
"Andy, wait!" He implored and walked down the rest of the stairs that separated them. "When did you-"
"Yesterday"
"That's…amazing, babe… Are you ok?" He tried to reach for her arm, but she pulled away, which felt like he'd been stabbed in his heart.
"I've been better"
"Are you happy... about it?" She was fully crying again, and this time it wasn't anger. It was a deep sadness. Surprisingly, she wanted that with him, but it felt like they were worse than they've ever been before and she hadn't imagined this moment like that. "I need to go, Robert." So she left, without giving him an answer.
A few days went by and the shifts at the station were pretty similar to when Sullivan first came to 19. He wouldn't join them for meals and Herrera would give him the cold shoulder again, despite all the attempts he had made to talk to her. Assigning her to the Aid Car every shift didn't exactly help the cause, either. But the biggest difference was that they were now in fact married, expecting a baby nobody knew about and the whole team was mad at the "new" captain. Well, all of them but Warren, always so diplomatic.
"Hey, do you want some breakfast?" Ben offered, after knocking on the door of his Captain's office. "Thanks, but I'm not hungry." Robert refused, with his head buried in paperwork. "Come on, just come out of your dungeon for two minutes." He insisted, but didn't succeed and was left with another negative answer.
"Would you eat it if I brought it here?"
Warren could have sworn that he had seen a shadow crossing his captain's face. "You sound like my wife."
"Well, someone needs to make sure you don't starve yourself."
"Thank you...dad." He joked, and gave him a weak side smile.
"Hey! You're not that younger than me." The firefighter defended himself, although he didn't take it personally, because it was the first time in a week he had seen his friend smile. "And I have better hair." He added, and they both laughed.
"I know, I know, but that was something so fatherly of you to say."
"Can I give you some advice?" Ben ventured to ask, suddenly. "Sure, why not?" Sullivan answered, distractedly.
"If there is something else she should know about that meeting with the Chief, just tell her. She misses you." The surgeon said, finally getting his full attention.
"How-"
"How do I know that we got just the part of the conversation that makes you look like an ass?" Warren finished.
"Yeah" Robert wondered, rubbing his face, unconsciously.
"If I know you how I think I do, I don't believe you're dumb enough to make the same mistake twice. And I know how hard it was for you to hold Andy back when Pruitt told you so."
"Well, I guess you know me better than my wife."
