4x16 (part 3)
A/N: Third, last and longest part! Thank you for reading!
Sullivan couldn't finish his conversation with Ben, because the whole team was called to a fire. Once they arrived there, all eyes went to Herrera momentarily, as the building on fire was a storage facility like the one that had taken her father's life. Robert quickly took command of the scene, pairing firefighters up. He stayed outside, organizing the job while everyone got to work on their assigned missions. The captain looked for his wife with worried eyes, checking her emotional state, but thankful that, this time, she was staying outside. They hold their breaths, while they waited for the ventilation team's report, so when they heard Maya over the radio saying the roof was stable enough to vent, a sense of relief overcame them all.
Nevertheless, after half an hour, Gibson and Bishop hadn't made much progress venting the roof. Given that he was the only one without a task and having the rest of the scene under control, Robert decided to help them out. It was supposed to be safe, and yet, Andy couldn't avoid getting a little tense when she heard through the radio what her husband was about to do. Her mood change didn't go unnoticed by Warren, who was her partner for the day. He didn't mention it though, until a while later, when, despite the advancement in the roof, Herrera started to feel sick and ran to a quieter corner. Ben gave her some space at the beginning, but he got worried when she took so long to come back.
"Hey, you ok?" He asked her, concerned. "Yeah, just give me two minutes." She didn't sound very convincing and it was also evident that she had thrown up. "Do you need to leave? Do you want me to get Sullivan?"
"No, I'm fine. Just needed a moment."
"I know, this whole thing is-"
"It's not that"
"Andy, it's ok. Everyone would understand if-"
"Warren!" She cut him, louder than she had intended. "It's not that." She continued, her voice calm this time, giving him a meaningful look. "What- oohh!"
"Mhm." She simply answered, breaking eye contact, having difficulties to keep her tears at bay. "Does Sullivan- of course he knows, that's why you're on-"
"Aid Car, yep."
"Are congratulations in order?" He wondered, not wanting to overstep. She simply nodded in response, but couldn't hold the tears anymore, prompting the former surgeon to hug her. "Hey...everything is going to be ok."
"I know. I just...I just wish the situation was different. You know..."
"With the baby daddy." He finished, like he had done that morning with the alluded one and she nodded again, pulling away from the hug. "And with my dad...and this fire...and my husband on that roof. I don't know, I'm hormonal and I miss them."
"All of this, that you're feeling" he gestured in front of her, "it's normal. And about that baby daddy you miss so much, just talk to him, maybe there was something else there."
"What? Do you know something that I don't?" She inquired, but she never got an answer because they were interrupted by the deafening sound of an explosion. Instinctively, Warren covered her head to protect her from the blast, but it never got to them. The only ones affected by it were the ventilation team. "I need help over here!" Bishop shouted immediately over the radio.
Everything got blurry for a few seconds, flashes of the day her father died coming to Andy's mind. She was numb and didn't even hear her partner asking her if she was ok. She started to hyperventilate, the realisation sinking in. "Robert" She whispered between breaths. The thought of losing the man she loved the same way she had lost her father was unbearable.
"Andy, breathe! They need us!" Ben told her. "He needs you" And that did the trick. She took a few more breaths to calm herself and rushed to do the job she was trained to do.
A couple of hours later, Herrera was still restlessly pacing around the waiting room of the hospital. Warren approached her, after Maya and Vic's failed attempts, trying to get her to sit down and have something to eat. "Andy" She was a little startled. "Oh, hi."
"You need to take a break, have something to eat."
"I'm ok, thanks."
"Andy, you're not ok." He began, making her stop. Her face was pale and she had dark circles under her teary eyes. "And we both know he'd want you to take care of yourself and your little probie." He smiled at her and she finally agreed, taking the hand he was offering her. He bought her a drink and a snack, but remained silent letting her initiate the conversation at her own time. "I can't do this without him."
"Don't go there, Andy."
"Gibson regained consciousness on the way, but he didn't, Ben. He was closer to the pipe and-" She couldn't finish as her whole body shook from the sobs.
"Just let the doctors do their jobs. Shepherd is with him." He reassured her.
Another hour went by before they could see Gibson. Andy stayed in the waiting room, just in case they called her, with Maya beside her to keep her company. At some point while they were waiting in silence, Chief McAllister arrived and, after asking for an update on their teammates' state, he talked. "I've seen the report, apparently that old gas pipe wasn't even on the charts, so there's nothing they could've done differently." Maya and Andy nodded, but didn't say anything. "Herrera, you're acting Captain until further notice." He added and the lieutenant looked at him, surprised. "Sullivan said the other day you were ready for the promotion, I didn't agree, so don't make me regret this." He left before she had the chance to reply. "Wow, he's something." Bishop stated, raising her eyebrows. "Congrats, though. You deserve this."
"No, I don't."
"What? Of course you do. You've-"
"I didn't listen to him, I yelled and said things...but I didn't listen."
"I'm not following-"
Right at that moment, Shepherd appeared, thankfully carrying good news. Andy was glad that her friend was there, since she didn't understand a word that Amelia was saying. "He's going to be ok and he's awake, you can see him now." The experienced doctor emphasized that last part, knowing that was all she needed to hear.
The neurosurgeon walked Andy to her husband's room and she was crying the second she set a foot in it. "Hey, come here" Robert told her and she obliged, laying on his bed beside him. He wrapped his arm around her, protectively, and kissed her forehead. "You ok?" He wondered, running his hand up and down her back. "I should be the one asking you that." She wiped her tears, placing herself in her favorite spot in the world.
"I'll live. Now you." She chuckled, aware that he wasn't going to stop until he'd made sure she was alright. "I'm worried and sad...I feel sick...and I'm sorry… for everything." She snuggled closer to him, as he tightened his grip. "I'm sorry, too. I should've come with a better solution."
"I know you tried, McAllister told me." She propped herself on her elbow to look at him, embarrassed. "I said some things to Jack...about us. They were wrong in so many ways and I didn't-"
"Andy, it's ok, we were mad, we both said things we didn't mean." She kissed him, barely letting him finish. "I love you"
"I love you, too… Did you get checked?" Herrera belly laughed, incredulous that her overprotective husband had ruined their moment. "You're going to be a pain in the ass, aren't you?"
"Yup"
"Nothing happened to me! And Warren has been babysitting me all day, believe me."
"That's my guy." He joked, making a mental note to thank his friend for it. "He knows." Sullivan looked at her, a little bit shocked that she had told someone about the baby. To be honest, he wasn't sure if she wanted it. He just knew he did, so much. "Does it bother you?" She rushed to ask him, when she saw his reaction. "No, of course not. I… we didn't get to talk about it and… I didn't know if you were happy or…" He trailed off, not finding the right words. "I'd be lying if I told you I wanted this to happen right now, or that I'm not terrified about the whole thing, but I am, I am happy we're having a little probie."
"Little probie?" His smile couldn't get wider. "That's how Warren calls them." She explained, laying down on his chest again.
"I love it"
