4x16 (part III)
A/N: So sorry for the delay! Life and work happened.
Just a reminder, in this story Andy lives, momentarily (we hope), with Jack. ;)
After a long, busy shift, where Maya couldn't talk to Andy again, the latter arrived home still with the thought that, maybe, Robert knew what she had said about their relationship.
"Jack?" She called, entering the kitchen, but he just mumbled something unintelligible back, while assaulting the fridge. "Did you talk to my husband before he left?"
"Of course, we worked together and I was his lieutenant, so…" He told her, still unaware of where she was going.
"No, I mean about me or our marriage." Andy cleared. "Oh, yeah. He came to see you, once. I told him you didn't want to talk to him. He didn't believe me at first, so I-"
"When was that?" She cut him. "I don't know, two weeks ago, maybe." Jack answered. "Why would you not tell me that?" She replied, getting progressively angry with him. "I…didn't think you wanted to know, you were pissed and avoided him…I thought you two were over and I was trying to save you a problem." Gibson's answer was sincere, so she took a breath, aware that she had been giving everyone mixed signals about their marital situation.
"He's not a problem, he's my husband, Jack." Her voice was calm and the anger had been replaced by sadness. "Did you tell him what I said to you? At the wedding." She worried, with a pleading look that cried "please, tell me you didn't".
"Some of it."
"Jack!"
"I'm sorry! I told him to give you the time you've asked for, but he didn't want to leave, and you weren't even here. I…was trying to protect you.." He ranted, still holding the leftovers from the fridge he was about to eat when she stormed in to bombard him with questions.
"I don't need you to protect me!" She turned around and went to her bedroom, slamming the door after her.
A few days later, they were all but Andy, who was catching up on some paperwork or rather hiding from the sympathetic looks she's been getting from her friends, gathered around the table at the beanery. Most of them were talking and joking nonchalantly, like they've done for the past few shifts after the Chief's visit, until Vic had enough.
"Ok, are we going to keep pretending that nothing happened?" The conversation died abruptly and her teammates stared at her. "Did anyone know anything about Sullivan leaving?"
"Nop" Travis and Jack answered before the first took another sip from his water bottle, while the rest just shook their heads.
"Ben?" Hughes insisted. "What? I said I didn't know." He shrugged. "Well, you two were friends, weren't you?" Vic inquired, again.
"Well, Andy was shocked. So if he didn't even tell his own wife… why should I know?" Warren defended himself. "How's Andy by the way?" He continued, looking at Maya.
"She's not ok."
"So, who's going to talk to her?" Vic demanded in her well known persistent ways.
Two minutes later, Andy, who had just found a framed picture of her wedding that had made her cry, received another visit.
"Hey" Warren greeted her, calmly. "Hey" The captain simply said, wiping her tears and putting the photo back in the drawer she'd found it. "How are you doing?" Ben had embraced his dad role and quickly volunteered as the self-appointed counsellor, because nobody was willing to do it. When Herrera just offered him a weak smile for an answer, he guessed that she was having a harder time than he had foreseen.
"Have you talked to him?"
"No, I've left him a bunch of voicemails but other than that..." Ben nodded in understanding. "Did you ever talk about me?" Andy wondered, but Warren wasn't feeling comfortable talking about Robert behind his back. "Andy, I…"
"I don't want you to expose his dirty secrets or anything… I just need to know if..." She trailed off.
"I don't think he wanted this, if that's what you're scared about." Ben cleared.
"Ok, why did he leave then?"
"I think he thought that's what you wanted."
"I didn't, I swear." Andy denied it, rapidly. "I believe you" The former surgeon took a seat.
"But?"
"No buts, I do believe you." Warren assured, not happy about how he was handling the situation. "Ok, why don't you say whatever you came here to say? I know you probably got the short end of the stick." She snapped, starting to lose her patience.
"We just wanted to talk to you, see how you are, because we're worried about you, that's all."
"Well, you should be, I'm stupid and broken. I made the person I love the most in the entire world run away from me and our baby and now I can't even contact him." She ranted, inadvertently spilling her own secret.
"You're not stupid, Andy- wait! your what?"
After briefing the rest of the team only about part of the conversation he'd had with Andy, Warren took Bishop apart.
"Hey, I think we need to do something." He stated. "About?" Maya asked, confused. "About Surrera?" He whispered.
"Su-what?"
"Herrera and Sullivan!" Ben answered, still quietly, as if it was so obvious. "Do you think that because you gave them a stupid nickname nobody is going to guess that we're talking about them?" Bishop replied, amused.
"Ok, it was a stupid idea. Anyway, I know." Warren said, giving her a meaningful look.
"She told you about the baby?" The lieutenant was surprised to hear that after Andy made her swear she wouldn't tell anybody, until she had reported it to the department. In return, she promised to take the least risks as possible. Herrera was trying to take advantage of the couple of weeks she still had before it would be mandatory to inform about her condition. She really didn't want her husband to be the last one to know about the existence of their unborn child, but she was running out of time and he was still unreachable.
"Not on purpose." He said, awkwardly. "Ok, so what do you suggest?" Maya continued, back to the point.
"Well, I think we should find a way to contact Sullivan."
