Chapter 15

Perfect

1830- Hereford, UK

Once the disruption from Chelsea Baker passed Martha was able to relax and truly enjoy her retirement celebration. Georgie flexed her hand several times and tried to take a good look at her knuckles before Elvis noticed. When he turned her way, she hid her hands on her lap under the table, methodically massaging at the soreness. He scooted in closer to her.

"Need some ice on 'at hand?" he asked softly.

She huffed and rolled her eyes. "You must have an antennae sticking out the back of your head," she said. Of course he laughed and reached to squeeze her knee playfully.

"When was the last time ya punched someone George?" She gave him a look. "As I recall, ya deliver quite a blow with those small hands of yours." She chuckled then and leaned her head on his shoulder. He wrapped an arm around her as she cuddled his thigh. "This could go down as one of our most memorable dates, eh?" he said nuzzling her temple.

"You may be right there." Georgie turned her face towards his, tilting her head to accept his kiss. It was a slow, soft, lingering kiss…..and they both felt it all the way down to their toes. Georgie groaned. Elvis grinned against her lips and deepened their passion. It was like the first time they kissed. It was something they both had wanted and neither were disappointed. It simply left them wanting more of each other.

Georgie ginned as their lips touched again. They both heard the scuffling of chairs and felt a presence. In unison their heads turned. Seated and staring back at them were Spanner and Toni Thompson.

"Remind me again who the newlyweds are here," Spanner said, leaning in on his forearms. Toni was the expression of mischief as well.

The Hartes pulled back from each other. Elvis carried the air of his rank when he said, "A lesson to ya mate. Doesn't matter how long you've been married. 'At spark never goes out." Georgie smiled broadly in agreement.

"The voice of experience," Spanner said, kissing his wife.

"Wise words captain," Toni said giving her husband another quick peck. "Listen in you two, Martha is preparing to cut the cake. Everyone needs to fall in."

"Let's crack on." Elvis said offering to steady Georgie as she stood. He knew she was perfectly capable of maneuvering herself but he could not help wanting to be her gentleman.

"Hey Georgie! If you ever get bored being a medic, I could certainly use your close quarter combat skills in the training gym," Toni said.

Georgie barked out a laugh, "I will keep that in mind, but I love what I do thank you. Someone's got to keep you lot mended."

When the foursome became part of the circle surrounding Martha Greene the elder woman smiled and nodded warmly. "It is with sadness and joy that I part ways from you all. But rest assured, we will remain friends." Martha cut the cake with smiles and tears, everyone graciously accepted their generous slice and relayed their personal sentiments to her. The gifting table was stacked with flowers and envelopes, a testament to the heartfelt regards from her co-workers. In the end Elvis and Tim Hawthorne helped Martha fill her car boot and the Hartes followed her home to make certain Chelsea Baker left no residual surprises.

If Georgie and Elvis were honest, they were anxious to get home. There was a certain baby boy waiting, who meant the entire world to them.

1900 - Hereford, UK – Sunday

Sunday at home with family held a deeper meaning to the two soldiers who had missed more than they could count due to their service. When Elvis told Daniel he would be home with him and mummy, he was true to his word. The small family spent a wonderful day together and Marie comfortably joined in despite missing a certain someone.

As evening began to fall Georgie and Elvis found themselves alone together in the cottage conservatory marveling at the tiny buds forming on the greenery outside. The unexpected storm that had exploded in their midst was just a memory now and despite Georgie still needing time to mend, she already started to sort what she wanted to accomplish in the garden.

"I cannot wait to get out there and start digging," she said straining her head from side to side looking out the paneled glass walls like a child in a candy shop.

"I reckon I'll be digging the holes for ya," Elvis said, amused by her resolve to get going.

"That shouldn't be a problem for ya."

"Nah." He sat back and closed the book he was reading to watch her head dart back and forth, sleek hair swaying as it went. She was beautiful standing there, the long flowing dress she wore fell to just above her ankles showing a hint of flesh on one side, her cast visible on the other. She fancied going about the cottage barefoot and Elvis chuckled, "Ain't your feet cold?'

She slowly turned with a smile. "No. My feet are fine. Of course most of this one is encased in this damn plaster," she said fingering her hair back behind her ears diverting her attention soley to him. Elvis stared at her longingly, lovingly. She stared back feeling the intensity building between them. "You know what it does to me when you look at me that way," she said.

"Negative….tell me," he said deeply, bringing himself to his feet and going to her.

She was even shorter with no footwear and looked up at him, pulling her lower lip in between her teeth. He smiled down anticipating her response. Georgie placed her palms on his chest savoring the warmth from him.

"It reminds me of the first time you told me you loved me," she said.

His face softened even more and he tucked away a strand of her hair she had missed and said, "You're beautiful."

She always felt shy when he became romantic. It was part of the effect he had on her. "I look a mess," she said.

Elvis toyed with a lock of her hair and whispered, "You look perfect tonight."
