Chapter 1:
It was a warm day, and everything was going peaceful. The animals were getting along at the moment, and Simba even managed to get some father-son time with the former king.
"Kiara sure is growing fast," the older lion commented.
The new king chuckled at that. "Yeah, she's such an energy ball."
Chuckling along with his son, they stared out the open space.
"There you two are."
They turned to see the former and new queen, along with Zira, staring at them with identical warm smiles.
"Did you two need something?" Mufasa asked them.
Nala shook her head. "We were only wondering where you guys were."
Joining them, they all lied down and took in the warmth of the sun.
"Where's Kiara?" Sarabi asked.
"With the troublesome duo, of course," Simba rolled his eyes chuckling.
Ever since they could leave the cave, they've been closer than ever, Kiara and Kovu especially. There was something about her bond with Kovu that made the adults glow with glee.
"Oh my, what is this? Both royal pairs, and my dear mate, just lazing around?"
They all turned to see Scar, an amused expression dancing across his face.
"Nala and I learned from the best," Simba smirked.
The adults couldn't help but laugh at that, and Simba motioned for his uncle to lay with them.
"Where's Nuka? I haven't seen him all day," Nala commented.
Scar grinned while rolling his eyes. "No doubt he's off with Dotty," he responded.
They'd all been teens once too; there was no doubt Nuka was falling for his childhood best friend, and it appeared Dotty reciprocated those feelings as well. When would they tell each other? They'll never know.
"They're so in love with each other," Nala voiced their thoughts.
The others nodded in agreement. They spent a bit more time talking about their kids, and other things, before deciding to head into the den and cool off. They had stood up and barely took a step, when a certain black maned lion went crashing to the ground.
"What the hell-"
Childish laughter could be heard right after, and they weren't all too surprised by the culprits.
"Hahaha, pinned ya, Daddy!"
Kiara, Vitani, and Kovu were all lying on top of Scar and in hysterics. The other adults couldn't help but laugh along. Scar glanced up at the cubs, wondering why they had to use him as a prop.
"Haha, good job guys!"
They looked up to see Nuka high-fiving their paws.
"Yeah, we did it!" Kovu cheered.
"He didn't even see it coming!" Kiara added.
"Yeah!" Vitani answered.
The cubs and Nuka were in hysterics, and Scar merely looked at them in mock anger.
"Heathens," he commented, fueling even more laughter from the group.
"So how'd it go?" They all turned to see Dotty.
"We got him good!" Vitani laughed.
"Yeah!" Kiara and Kovu shouted in unison.
Dotty laughed, then turned to Nuka. "Hey, wanna hang out later?"
Grinning, Nuka nodded, and watched as Dotty walked away. He turned back, only for him to notice everyone giving him an amused stare.
"What?" he asked them.
"Nuka's got a girlfriend," Kovu teased.
Immediately the three-year-old lion's face was tinged with crimson. "S-Shut up, s-she's not my g-girlfriend!" he shot back defensively.
"But during the Mpenzi festival, she nuzzled you," Kiara innocently noted.
"And you didn't pull away," Vitani added, smirking.
Face reddening even more, he tried to come up with an excuse. "W-Well I didn't...want to be rude!" he finally blurted.
The three cubs gave each other mischievous smiles.
"~Nuka and Dotty sitting in a tree-" Kiara began.
"K-I-S-S-I-N-G~" his siblings finished.
"Okay guys, that's enough," Simba chuckled.
"Oh come on, Nuka always teases us," Kiara playfully pouted.
"Yeah, just because he's got a girlfriend-"
"Shut it, termite!"
"I'm sure she feels the same," Mufasa couldn't help but join in.
"Especially with those curls(1) on your head," Scar couldn't resist.
They laughed as Nuka's face created a whole new shade of red. "Oh come on, you guys too?"
"Okay you guys, go run off and play," Nala interjected.
"And don't use your father or gruncle as a pouncing prop," Zira added, though there was a tiny smile on her lips.
"Your weight nearly crushed me," Scar added.
"It never hurts Simba or Uncle Mufasa," Kovu pointed out.
"Yeah, why's it hurt Daddy?" Vitani questioned.
"Because Daddy's old and brittle," Nuka teased.
Scar whipped his head around. "What did you say?"
The cubs were now laughing harder than ever; chuckling, he meekly went over and quickly bumped his head. "Love ya Dad!"
Still laughing, the group ran off, leaving a flabbergasted Scar, and an amused group of lions.
"They'll make fine huntresses in the future," Nala complimented.
"And Kovu will make a great defense for the pride," Simba added.
Zira nodded in agreement. "They sure will, won't they?"
Turning to them, Scar's disbelief still remained. "Did you hear what that little shit said about me?"
Simba smirked. "Oh come on, have you guys met his parents?" he teased.
Scar and Zira looked to each other, then back at their nephew.
"Worse, we met their cousin," Scar jabbed.
"Don't forget his second cousin and siblings," Zira added.
"Speaking of siblings..." everyone turned to Mufasa who was looking at Scar, "does he know?"
They knew all too well what he was talking about. Not too long ago, they explained to Kovu his true parentage. Despite being a bit confused...
Scar gave a warm smile. "he took it better than I thought he would."
They stayed in that spot talking for a bit more, and soon after they all parted ways.
"Found ya, 'Tani!"
The three one-year-old cubs settled for playing hide-and-seek. As simple as the game was, Vitani nor Kovu could ever beat Kiara.
"Ugh, you always win!" Vitani complained, but had a hint of a smile.
Kiara giggled. "Sorryy."
The three sat in silence, and took in the warmth of the sun.
"Man, it's hot," Kovu commented
The other two agreed, and decided to go sit underneath one of the large acacia trees. The thickness of the leaves and length of the branches provided the perfect amount of shade for the three cubs, and they relaxed on the ground and talked for some time.
"Hey, Kiara!"
The trio turned to see Noni, Kiara's maternal cousin(2), walking towards them. She had a cream colored coat like her father's, but with a bit of a darker shade like her mother's. Surprisingly, she didn't inherit her mother's hair tuft. What was really striking about her, however, was her eyes; her right eye was brown like her mother's, but her left eye, resembles her father's ocean eyes. Despite being from another pride, she visited fairly often, but came later this visit due to a major injury.
"Hey, Noni, what's up?" Kiara questioned.
"Now that my leg's healed you wanna hang out?" Noni asked.
Kiara smiled and nodded, oblivious to the face Kovu was making. He really wanted to spend time with Kiara, but any time he tried to, Noni always got in the way. However, he knew how much Kiara cared about Noni, so he tried not to show his discontent.
"Hey, uh, could I come too?" Kovu shyly asked.
Noni frowned. "I'm sorry but, we just need some girl time," she responded. Kiara stood up and joined Noni.
"Well, can I join?" Vitani asked, seeing nothing wrong with it.
Noni looked back at the hair tufted lioness cub and fought back the urge to roll her eyes.
No way, I can't bring her along, Noni thought to herself, all she wants to do is play fight and get dirty; she's kinda annoying.
"Well, Kiara and I want some girl time, alone," she told her, stressing out the "alone." She then turned back to Kiara, trotting away with her.
Kovu stared at the ground in sadness. Vitani was scowling at Noni's fading figure. She was just being nice to Kiara, but was rude to her and her brother. Kiara's oblivion to her attitude didn't make the situation any better. She didn't care who Noni thought she was; as of now, she didn't like her one bit.
She turned to Kovu, and those bitter feelings worsened. Seeing her twin upset, she tried to comfort him. "Hey, it's okay, 'Vu. We can go off on our own adventure."
Smiling, Kovu nodded, and the twins ran off away from the Pride Lands. Running through the grass, Vitani turned to Kovu. "So, what's the plan?" she asked him.
Kovu turned to her, smirking. "Wanna play "Pinned Ya'?"
Mirroring his smirk, she lunged for him, and the two went tumbling. Barely a moment later, Vitani was staring down at Kovu.
"Pinned Ya."
"Hey, get off," Kovu grumbled. Vitani complied, snickering about her victory. Kovu lunged for her, catching her off guard. The two ended up tumbling even farther, and it wasn't long until they crashed into something.
Or, someones.
Shaking their heads the two got up and turned to apologize. However, they were in shock at what-er, who-they were looking at.
In front of them were two hyena pups, a male and a female, that looked to be about their age. The female had what appeared to be bangs, along with braided pigtails, and the male had a mohawk-like style. Both had chocolate brown eyes, and black button noses. Based on their matching size, it was fairly safe to assume they were littermates.
Kovu began to apologize. "We're sorry, we didn't mean to-"
"We don't really care."
Vitani gave them an incredulous look. "Excuse me? We were trying to apologize," she stated.
The girl rolled her eyes. "We know, we're not idiots. We just don't care that you bumped into us."
"Not like ya did it on purpose," the boy joined in.
Vitani and Kovu rose their eyebrows, but didn't comment on that. "Okay...well, goodbye."
They turned to leave, but were in surprise when the hyenas called them back. They turned in utter confusion.
"Where ya guys headed?" the boy asked.
Frowning, Vitani answered him. "Back to the Pride Lands."
"Wait!"
Now full-on irritated, the cub twins fully 360'ed. "Look, we get it, you don't care. And you'd probably use us since we're Pride Landers."
the boy scoffed. "Puh-leez! It's not like you guys are royalty!"
The girl whipped her head at him. "Kamili!"
Vitani shot daggers at him. "Well, our daddy's the king's uncle, so yes, we technically are."
Her eyes widened with genuine surprise. "That's awesome! Hey, uh, would it be weird if we asked you a question."
Vitani looked at her. "Ask away," she stated, though there was a teensy smile on her lips.
She shuffled her paws, then sucked up her pride. Looking the cub twins in the eyes, she questioned them.
"You guys wanna be friends?" Soon after, she quickly added, "we're sorry, we shouldn't have been jerks to you guys, and well...we don't really have any other friends."
Vitani and Kovu looked at each other frowning. "You guys don't think hyenas and lions being friends is weird?"
The female rose a brow. "No? My parents and uncle are best friends with lions."
"Been friends since they were all our age," her brother added.
Vitani and Kovu couldn't help but crack small smiles. Their father had talked about how he and their mother were also friends with hyenas, despite their parents finding it odd. Could these be their kids?
"Sure, why not?" Vitani finally answered.
"Yeah, you guys don't seem that bad," Kovu inputted.
The girl grinned. "The name's Shanti, daughter of the matriarch," the female greeted. She then gestured the the male hyena, "and big mouth over here, as you know, is my twin, Kamili."
"I'm Vitani, and my brother Kovu and I are twins as well," she answered.
"With different dads!" Kovu added.
Shanti and Kamili looked at each other, then back at the cubs. "How?"
Great, Vitani sighed, now they probably think we're weirdos.
"Well, my mom got pregnant with me, but Daddy found out he couldn't have any more kids," she explained frowning, "Something wrong with his body, I guess; she got sad, because she wasn't even sure if she had me inside her. So, mom spent time with a cubhood friend, and bam, Kovu and I became littermates."
"But my stepdad's awesome, so I don't mind," Kovu finished with a beam.
The hyena pups were still a tad bit puzzled.
"But how did they know whose cub was whose?" Kamili frowned.
"Rafiki, our shaman, did some weird test" was Vitani's simple answer.
"That's..." the hyena pups looked to each other, then back at the cubs. "That's so cool!"
Vitani shot Shanti a toothy grin. "Thanks. For a second I thought we already lost our new friends," she joked, causing Shanti to chuckle.
"Nah, that's wavy. You're half-twins!" she declared.
Vitani and Kovu looked to each other, debating the status.
"Half-twins...hey, I like it!" Kovu approved, causing the other pair of twins to chuckle.
"Thanks, I'm the brains of the duo," she cheekily stated.
"Puh, yeah right," retorted Kamili.
"Uh huh," Shanti tossed back at him, "and we're the strongest, like Ashanti."
Kovu caught sight of Kamili's flushed cheeks. A smirk came crawling onto his face. "You like her, huh?"
"Nah, girls are gross!" he cried.
"Is that why we're more powerful than you?" Shanti retorted, confusing the hair tufted lioness cub.
"Wait...males don't run your group?" she asked her, "in lion prides, the males run everything."
"Well, in hyena groups, the females are superior." She smirked at her brother saying this.
Vitani was amazed by this. "Man, I wish lion prides worked that way," Vitani commented, pouting on the reality.
"Well too bad, 'Tani." Kovu blew her a raspberry, while Kamili chuckled along.
He turned back, then returned his gaze to the lion cubs.
"Hey, Kovu, wanna go explore?" Kamili suggested. Kovu beamed, and the two ran off.
Shanti and Vitani chuckled while shaking their heads.
"Boys will be boys, huh?" Shanti asked.
Vitani nodded. "You got that right."
Shanti turned to Vitani. "Ya wanna hang out by the waterhole?"
She smiled, trotting alongside her new friend.
Arriving there, they were lucky that there wasn't anyone else with them; majority of the lions got along with the hyenas, but still...
"Wow, you live really close by," Vitani commented, realizing how quick of a walk it was.
"Yeah, weird how I've never seen you guys," Shanti agreed.
"I know, right?"
They were sitting in the shallow end, and Shanti let her curiosity seep through.
"So what's it like being the king's cousin? Ya know, royalty and all," Shani asked.
Vitani puffed out her tuft. "Think you should be asking my second cousin. She is the princess, after all."
Shanti smiled. "And? You're technically still royalty."
Vitani smiled and shrugged. "It feels normal. Just everyone respects you."
Shanti hummed in response, and Vitani turned to her. "What about you? You excited to be future matriarch?"
Shanti gave her a weak smile. "In all honesty...I'm kinda nervous."
Vitani wore a look of surprise. "What? You get to be the alpha female and make all the rules!"
"That's just it!" she exclaimed, "what if I don't do as great as my mother? I'm scared that I'll croak under all the pressure and ruin everything."
Vitani didn't think of that. Now, she was even more happy she didn't have to deal with all those pressures.
"I didn't think of that..."
Shanti looked up at her. "See, you're lucky, Vitani. You have royal blood, but, since you're not heiress to the throne, you're free to do whatever."
"Well, technically I'm only a halfblood royal," she joked, causing Shanti to giggle.
"Trust me, being a fullblood royal isn't as great as it seems," Shanti explained.
Vitani placed a paw on her friend's shoulder. "Hey, you got this," she reassured her, "sure you may have some trouble, but you'll have your family there to help you. Besides, the more mistakes you make, the more you learn."
Nerves melting, she smiled at her. "Thanks, Vitani."
Vitani rose her eyebrow. "You can call me 'Tani, ya know."
Shanti blinked. "Okay, 'Tani."
The girls chuckled and sat in silence for a moment. A flashback popped into Vitani's head, and she turned to face Shanti.
"So, any boys?" Vitani smirked.
Shanti tried to play it off. "Huh, what do you mean boys?"
Vitani rolled her eyes. "Come on, it's only us here; besides, there's gotta be someone that you've got the hots for."
Shanti felt the heat rise in her face as she thought about it. Judging from Vitani's mischievous grin, she noticed it too.
"W-Well, I wouldn't s-say I've got the hots for him but...he is pretty cute," she stuttered out.
"Whooo?" Vitani pressed further.
"That's the problem...I never got his name," she shamefully admitted.
Vitani felt for her. Even though she knew the name of the lion she thought was cute, she wasn't sure if it was a crush or not.
Quickly recovering, Shanti turned to Vitani. "Well, how about you?"
Before Vitani could answer, laughter was heard nearby. Turning their heads, they saw Noni, and another cub Vitani knew all too well.
He had a creamy gold coat like Kiara's, and many other animals even mistook him for Simba and Nala's cub. his eyes were a beautiful shade of blue, and he had a medium brown tuft the same size as Kovu's. It was pretty obvious to anyone that he was her age, if not a month or so younger.
What's he doing with her? She's never hung around him before. Is she trying to make me jealous-wait...jealous?
"Like what ya see?
Shanti's voice brought her back, and it was soon Vitani's turned to be a flustered mess.
"N-Not r-really, I just..." she couldn't find her words. Not that she needed to.
Shanti smirked. "You like him, huh?"
Vitani's strawberry colored cheeks and lowered gaze answered her question. She felt a paw on her shoulder, and looked up to see Shanti's sincere, brown eyes.
"Hey, I won't tell if you won't," she stated.
Giving a sincere smile, she continued on. "His name's Kopa, and...well...ya get the gist."
Shanti nudged her. "Hey, with a face like yours, and your personality, I wouldn't be surprised if he liked you back."
Vitani stared in surprised. Nobody really called her pretty before. No, her family didn't count.
"I-I'm not really-" she was cut off before she could even finish.
"Yes, you are, 'Tani; you're the animal form of beautiful. Shoot, if I was a guy, I'd definitely go for you. I mean, can we talk about your coat color? It's the perfect creamy brown(3). It's so shiny and soft too."
"My coat's not that spec-"
"And your tuft is something not a lot of lionesses have, especially not the shape; it's like it starts off short on the edges, but then gets super long in the middle. It's so cute!"
No one's ever complimented my tuft before...Hmm...
"I guess it's kinda cute, but-"
"And especially with those eyes. who else do you know with purple-blue eyes? They're like violet sapphires."
Well...she's kinda got a point, Vitani thought, if there's one thing I do like about me, it's gotta be my eyes.
"I mean, yeah sure, but-"
"And you're really nice, funny, and sweet; who wouldn't want someone like that in their lives?"
This caught Vitani off guard. "Really?"
Shanti nodded, a smile on her face. "Hell yeah!" She leaned in closer to Vitani. "And I know you guys were only playing, but you so overpowered your brother earlier when you guys were wrestling. Damn can you kick ass!"
Vitani had never been complimented that much in her whole life. Especially not by someone who she just met. Cheeks pink with happiness, she gave a warm smile. "Thanks...that means a lot, Shanti."
Flashing a warm smile at her way, she wrapped a foreleg around her. "Hey, what are friends for?"
Vitani rose an eyebrow. "Friends?"
Shanti's face fell. "Yeah...I thought-"
"Shanti, I know we practically just met, but you've already become my best friend."
Shanti's eyes twinkled. "Really?"
"Yeah!" She then smirked. "And I ain't lion either!"
The two burst into laughter at that and resumed their girl time.
"Woah!"
Kamili had taken Kovu to the Elephant Graveyard. After a few games, they grew bored and decided to go on a bit of their own adventure as part of their guy time.
"Its's really creepy," Kovu commented.
"Yeah...isn't it great?" Kamili asked.
"We could get in big trouble," Kovu snickered, a mischievous smile on his face.
"I know" was Kamili's just as devious response.
The two slowly walked over the the giant elephant skull. Barely a step in, and a waft of rotten air hit their noses.
"Gah! It reeks in here," Kovu groaned, his paw on his nose.
"Tell me about it," Kamili agreed, his paw trying to block the smell.
Walking further in, their noses eventually adjusted to the smell, and they continued to walk in. Looking around, the sights of all the bones fascinated the lion cub and hyena pup.
Kamili turned to Kovu. "Ready?" he asked.
Kovu nodded and they went deeper inside. It was dark and gloomy, but still, they were amazed at it all. Venturing in even deeper, they caught side of multiple geysers.
BOOM!
The two jumped back as the one closest to them burst.
"We gotta be careful," Kamili warned him.
Kovu nodded, and the two continued their voyage. Looking around, they walked deeper and deeper into the graveyard. Up ahead, there was a smaller, yet still fairly large skull, and Kovu pointed it out to Kamili.
"Let's chill in there," the brown lion cub suggested.
Climbing in, they got comfortable, and Kamili turned to Kovu. "So, you're Vitani's half-twin, huh?"
Kovu nodded. "Yup."
Giving him a quizzical look, Kamili wanted to know more. "Is that a lion thing or something? Because I've never heard of that happening to a hyena."
Kovu shrugged. "Probably."
There was a moment of silence, then Kovu turned to Kamili. "So, who's that Ashanti girl?"
Kamili whipped his head at him. "W-What girl, I don't know what you're talking about!"
Kovu nudged him. "Hey, it's only us guys here. And I can tell you've got major goo-goo eyes for her."
Kamili's face went a new shade of red. Did he make it that noticeable?
"What!" he exclaimed, "Ashanti's just one of my closest friends! She's just really nice, and pretty, and supportive, and she's so strong. Man, whenever we play wrestle she always beats me, and I always look up and see her nice honey eyes..." he stopped once he realized what he was saying. Quickly snapping his head away, he quickly declared his final statement.
"B-But I d-don't like her, n-no way!"
Kovu stared at him for a minute. Then, a smirk made his way to his face. "So...if Ashanti, say, falls for someone else-"
"But she wouldn't do that," Kamili almost immediately interrupted.
Oh man this is too easy.
"But what if she does? Then what?" Kovu questioned, feigning curiosity.
"Oh man, I don't know-hey!"
Kovu couldn't contain his laughter. Kamili being a flustered wreck only increased it, and it wasn't long before he was gasping for air.
"S-Shut up!" he cried. Then, an idea popped into mind. "I bet you like the princess!"
It was silent. Kovu felt an uncomfortable warmth rise in his face.
"W-What!" Kovu hoped to throw Kamili off, "K-Kiara's just my best friend! W-Why would I l-like her?"
Kamili smirked. "~Kovu and Kiara sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G~" he tauntingly sang.
"G-Gross!" Kovu cried.
Kamili leaned closer. "Are ya sure?" he teased, "Cause those rosy cheeks say different!"
Kovu's face felt even warmer, and soon Kamili was the one gasping for air.
"Oh, man! You've got the hots for her, ol' pal!" he cried.
Kovu sighed. No use in trying to hide it. "What if she doesn't like me back?" he sincerely asked the hyena pup.
Kamili's grin faded and he tilted his head a bit. "What do you mean?"
"It's just..." Kovu sighed, then looked back at Kamili, "Even though we're not family, what if that's all she sees me as? I mean, yeah she doesn't refer to me as her cousin, but still..."
Kamili understood where this was going. He placed a paw on his shoulder, getting his attention. "Hey man, you just gotta believe in yourself. Maybe she's got the same feeling, but she's scared you're the one that sees her as family. You just gotta be patient, and more confident. You're a great guy you know."
Kovu looked at him unsure. "Really?" he asked him.
The hyena pup nodded. "Yeah! You're funny, awesome, fun to be around, and I can honestly say you're a great friend."
Kovu's eyes widened at the praise. "You really think so?"
Kamili rolled his eyes, but smiled and nodded. "Of course!"
Kovu blinked. He knew he was a great guy, but to hear it from someone else...
Someone that he hardly knew...
Kovu gave a warm smile. "Hey...thanks. You know, I know we just met, but I feel like I've known you my whole life; you've become a brother to me."
Kamili's eyes widened in surprise. "Y-You mean that?"
Kovu nodded. "Yeah!" He chuckled. "I'd be lion if I wasn't."
The guys cracked up at the pun, and continued adventuring into the graveyard.
In an area a few minutes away from the Pride Lands, there lived a group of hyenas. Originally under the old King Ahadi's rule, they were banned from the Pride Lands. However, when Mufasa became king, he allowed them to have the land neighboring the Pride Lands. Even better, there was a small jungle oasis where they could swim and bathe, even though they were also allowed access to the waterhole.
The matriarch was able to witness her clan flourish, from gaining more meat on their body, to just...being happier, in general. She even managed to find love, and start a family of their own.
"Yo, Shenz'!"
She huffed a sigh of exasperation. Hey, just because she found love, doesn't mean she didn't want to choke him sometimes.
She turned her head. "What, Banzai, what is it?" she called out.
"Where'd Shanti and Kamili run off to?" He asked her.
Shenzi's irritation turned into confusion. Now that she thought about it, they had been gone for most of the day.
"Ain't they outside playing?" Shenzi frowned.
Ed laughed something out, and Banzai and Shenzi's face went white. Running outside, they scanned the area.
"Shanti?" Banzai called out.
"Kamili?" Shenzi also tried.
No answer. Looking around, they checked for any sign of the pups.
Nothing.
"We gotta find 'em," Banzai said to Shenzi.
Nodding her head, the adult hyenas ran out and began on the search. for their kids.
It was late in the afternoon, and the pride wasn't doing much. Noni wanted to run off with Kopa instead, which left Kiara bored and alone. Remembering earlier, she ran to her great-aunt and uncle's den.
"Auntie Zira!"
The tan lioness looked up to see a creamy gold lioness cub running towards her.
She smiled at her great-niece. "What is it, love?" she asked her.
Stopping in front of her, she looked up into her great-aunt's red eyes. "Have you seen Kovu or 'Tani?"
Zira frowned and shook her head. "Sorry, honey, I haven't. But thanks for reminding me, I should probably go look for them."
Kiara smiled and nodded, running out of the den.
Zira watched her go and chuckled. Stretching, she walked out to see Nuka and Dotty walking and laughing with each other.
Wonder when Nuka will make a move, Zira thought, it's as plain as the scar on his father's face that they're in love.
Arriving at the waterhole, she found her mate getting some water. She waited for him to finish before looking for the twins.
"Have you seen Vitani or Kovu?"
He turned to face her, and realized the last time they saw them was early in the morning.
"No...we should probably look for them," he finally concluded.
Following her mate, the two went out to the fields, where their kids and Kiara last were. Checking all over the place, there was no sign of them.
"Hmm...let's try finding their scents," Zira suggested.
Noses touching the ground, they picked up the faint, yet existing scent. Following it, they continued walking ahead.
They were so intent on finding their kids that they didn't notice the figure in front of them.
"Ow, hey watch it!" the voice called.
"We're sorry," Zira apologized
"We weren't-" Scar began, but stopped once he saw who he bumped into. "Shenzi?"
The hyena turned and her eyes lit up.
"Banzai? Ed?" he soon asked.
"Scar! Zira!" Shenzi soon cried out.
Banzai wrapped a foreleg around each of them. "Haven't seen you pals in a while!"
Ed laughed something out and nuzzled both Scar and Zira.
The friends walked towards a rock nearby, and caught up with each other for a bit.
"So what are you guys doing out here?" Zira asked them.
"Finding our brats," Shenzi sighed.
Banzai turned to the lions. "Have you seen two hyena pups running around here?" Banzai asked his childhood friends.
Scar and Zira shook their head. "I didn't even know you guys had kids of your own."
"We can't find our kids either," Zira answered.
Seeing the confused faces, Scar explained to them. "Twins, a little over a year ago, a boy and girl."
"Ohhh," they answered (well, Ed laughed out something similar).
"I was gonna say, Nuka's a little too old for you guys to be watching him," Shenzi chuckled.
"Yeah, it seems he's even gotten himself someone," Zira stated.
Shenzi and Banzai grinned at each other, then back to the lion duo. "Let me guess: Dotty?"
Scar chuckled. "Well, who else?"
They all laughed. As a moment of silence passed, Zira looked to the rest of them. "Should we look for the kids now?"
Scar nodded. "How should we start?"
"How 'bout we split up?" Shenzi suggested, "Zira and I will go one way, you and Banzai go another."
Ed laughed something out, and the four looked at each other unsure.
"Ed ol' pal...maybe you should stay back home," Banzai stated.
"In case they come back, or even if Scar and Zira's cubs show up!" Shenzi quickly added, seeing Ed's saddened face.
Ed's face brightened. Running back to their oasis, the remaining four split up.
Zira and Shenzi:
"So, which twin is the oldest?"
The two females walked side by side, and though they weren't as close as the hyenas were with Scar, they could always talk to each other girl-to-girl.
"The female," Zira answered. She turned to the matriarch. "And yours?"
"The girl as well" was her response.
They continued to look around, but didn't find anything.
"Shanti?" Shenzi called out.
Zira turned to her. "That's a gorgeous name," she commented. Turning out to the open space, she called out, "Vitani?"
Shenzi smiled. "Thank you, so is your daughter's."
Zira grinned, and flopped onto the ground. Looking up towards the hyena, she motioned her to sit down as well. They talked for a moment, about their lives, kids, and just girl stuff.
"Maybe we should meet up with our husbands," Shenzi suggested, "they probably found the kids."
Nodding her head, Zira got up and followed Shenzi back to where they originally were.
Scar and Banzai:
"So, how's it feel having kids of your own?"
Banzai rubbed his head. "Man, they tire me out. I don't know how you guys do it."
Scar chuckled. He felt that way when Nuka had first been born. As much as he loved him, he was quite a handful.
"Trust me, friend, it gets easier with time," he reassured him.
Banzai nodded thoughtfully, then turned to Scar. "I didn't think we'd see her again."
Scar sighed, but with a smile. "I'm glad she escaped(3). I couldn't ask for a better wife and mate."
Banzai smiled at his puphood friend. It was evident that they were in love, and luckily they were able to make it work.
He placed a paw on the prince's shoulder. "I'm happy for ya, pal," he sincerely stated.
Scar smiled. "As I as for you and Shenzi."
Banzai opened his mouth to say something, but a noise interrupted him; Scar seemed to hear it too, and stopped to listen.
They heard familiar laughs, and followed the noise. Upon arriving, they were in for a bit of surprise.
There, in the grassy field, were Kovu and Kamili, playing wrestling around.
The adults watched for a moment, seeing them laugh and tussle.
"No luck either?"
They turned to see their wives staring at them hopelessly. They motioned for them to look, and their eyes lit up as well. They watched them for a moment, before making their presence known.
Normal POV:
"That was so cool, Kam'!"
The guys just returned from their trip to the Elephant Graveyard, and were now out in the grassy fields.
"I know right!" the pup agreed, "We gotta go there late at night! I heard that spirits of the dead come out and get you!"
Kovu laughed at this and turned back to him. "Man, you're an awesome best friend!"
Kamili beamed. "You are too, 'Vu."
Kovu smirked. "So you gonna see Ashanti later?"
Kamili whipped his head around. "W-What? W-Why would you s-say that?"
Kovu leaned in. "I mean, you made it clear you liked her."
Kamili was still in denial. "Shut up, no I don't!"
Kovu got into pouncing position. "Make me."
Playfully growling, Kamili pounced on the brown lion cub. Laughing, they wrestled and rolled around, trying to gain dominance of each other. Ultimately, Kovu was defeated.
"Ha, how do ya like them apples?"
He let Kovu up, and he playfully glared at the laughing hyena pup.
"Well Kovu, at least you can still pin Kiara."
Turning, they saw a familiar group of hyenas and lions.
"Mom, Dad!"
"Mama, Dad!"
Running towards them, they stopped a few feet away and informed them about their adventure.
"Kamili showed me this really cool place, and it was so awesome!"
"Yeah, it was so fun!" Kamili added.
The duo continued to ramble on. The adults chuckled, then realized half the group was missing.
"Where are your sisters?" Shenzi asked.
Kamili's and Kovu's smiles fell, and they turned to each other then back to their parents.
"We don't know," Kamili admitted.
"We left before they could go off on their own," Kovu answered.
Whether it was bad luck or perfect timing, their sisters soon appeared.
Right on top of the males.
"Oof!" they fell to the ground, feeling the weight of whatever-er, whoever-was on them.
"Hahahah!" came Vitani's voice.
"We got 'em good!" Shanti's voice sounded after.
"Hey!"
"Get off of us!"
Stepping off of their bothers, the girls continued to laugh.
"They're really both their mother's children."
Turning to see their parents, they greeted them and also told them about their fun.
"Seems like you guys had fun," Zira spoke to all for of them.
"You bet!" Vitani exclaimed.
Shenzi looked to her two hyena pups. She saw how happy they were, however...
"Okay, guys, time to head back."
Bam.
The atmosphere changed almost drastically.
"But mom, 'Tani and I were having so much fun!" Shanti whined.
"Yeah, Kovu and I had a blast!" Kamili agreed.
"Besides..." Shanti looked at both her parents, "the other hyenas don't really like us."
Shenzi and Banzai knew that was true. It wasn't necessarily a matter of like or dislike, however; the others were just older, and therefore didn't hang around the year olds.
"You can see them tomorrow," Scar piped in.
Now it was his kids turn to give him puppy eyes.
"Come on! Can't we keep playing with our friends?" Vitani pleased.
"Yeah!" Kovu seconded.
"Please?" Shanti and Kamili begged in unison.
The adults looked at each other, then back at their kids' hopeful faces.
"Sure, why not?" Banzai finally said.
"If it'll keep you guys out of our hair," Scar added.
"Daddy you barely have any hair," Vitani cheekily remarked.
The other three laughed at her comment, and ran away from their parents. Much like them, the hyenas and his mate were also in hysterics.
"She's really yours, pal," Banzai chuckled.
"And the boy, Kovu was it, looks just like you," Shenzi added.
Scar and Zira grinned at each other, then at the couple. "Actually...the boy's not mine."
Shenzi and Banzai turned to each other, then back at their friends.
"Eh?"
"Say what now?"
Scar and Zira explained to them the situation, and it all made sense to them.
"He looks exactly like you though!" Banzai protested.
"Must've got real lucky," Shenzi reasoned.
"In all fairness, his father did have a brown pelt and greenish eyes," Zira informed them.
Scar turned to her, a brow raised. "You think I'm that handsome?"
Zira mimicked his face. "My mother always said 'personality matters most'."
Shenzi and Banzai cracked up at Zira's rebuttal. Scar gave them a look of mock betrayal.
"What is it, tear down Scar day?" he asked.
Laughing, Zira nuzzled him. "Never, my love."
"Ack! Get a room!" Banzai teased.
Scar and Zira turned to each other, then back at the hyenas. "Are you sure you two of all animals really want to make that statement?"
The lions laughed, as the hyenas' cheeks reddened almost immediately. As time went by, they continued to catch up and spend time like they did when they were young. Looking up, they noticed the sun was beginning to set.
"Okay, now would be a good time to go home," Zira stated.
In agreement, the adults got up and wandered to the sounds of laughter.
Kovu and Kamili were wrestling on the floor, while the girls watched them from afar. The result was the opposite of earlier's incident.
"Gotcha, Kam'!"
The girls cheered for Kovu, but still congratulated Kamili. So intent on their socializing, they hadn't noticed their parents approaching.
"...So where are we going next?"
"Home, because the sun's starting to set."
Turning to face their parents, they looked back to each other sadly. Their fun was coming to an end.
"We can still see them again though, right guys?" Kovu asked.
"Of course, honey," Shenzi chuckled.
"Say goodbye, you guys," Scar told his cubs.
Their hearts swelled as Kovu and Kamili headbutted each other and Vitani and Shanti shared a nuzzle as they each wrapped a foreleg tightly around each other.
Parting away, they stared at each other one last time, before going towards their respective parents. They walked home, each duo chattering about how fun the others were, and how they were their best friends.
"Ya know, I don't think I've ever seen you so happy," Zira commented once they returned to their den. Kovu ran straight towards Pride Rock once he noticed the lionesses dragging the kill.
"It's just..." she looked up at her parents, "she was the first one outside of my family to compliment me. So much too."
Zira ruffled her tuft, while her mate smirk. "You say it like you didn't already know."
Vitani blushed and averted her gaze towards the floor. Her parents chuckled at her bashful attitude, and stared out toward the den. They caught sight of Simba and Nala motioning them over, and they looked back to Vitani.
"Come on, before Kovu eats all the food," Zira teased, causing them all to chuckled.
They made their way over, and continued on the rest of their day.

1: So, a deviantart user named iceflowerglow drew a bunch of healthy Nuka drawings with a curly mane, and I thought "oh my god, that's so cute", so yeah, creds to them; he's only three so he has the mohawk he did in the beginning of Lion King II.
2: It just didn't seem right that Kiara only had cousins from her dad's family.
3: I shouldn't really have to explain this but think of Tama's fur color, but a shade darker (see Panther85's Tama drawing).
4: This...will be explained in a future chapter😉
