Chapter 6: A Rivalry Ignited and a Talking Pokémon?!
With Leaf's departure, Robert turned his focus to the Cerulean City Gym. As he approached the door, he saw a note. It said: "The Gym will be closed for the day. Please come back tomorrow. "
Robert sighed.
"Well, there go my plans for the day. I guess that I will spend the day training."
After looking at his map, Robert decided the best place to train were the hills overlooking the city. As he headed up the bridge, he ran into another familiar face. Blue had also been looking to battle the Gym, but he too would have to wait for another day. After doing a little training, he ran into Robert.
"Hey again. How are you progressing?" Blue asked
"Pretty well. I've been training hard and catching new Pokémon."
"Cool. Would you like to battle?"
"Sure thing. Hope you're ready to lose."
Robert and Blue stood across the battlefield from each other.
"How about a 3-on-3 battle?" Blue asked
"Sounds good to me."
"Time to battle, Pidgeotto!"
Pidgeotto appeared before Blue and gave out a loud cry.
"Center stage! I choose you, Charmander."
Charmander appeared and stared down Pidgeotto.
"Pidgeotto, use Quick Attack!"
Pidgeotto dashed towards Charmander at lightning speed.
"Charmander, wait until Pidgeotto is right in front of you and use Ember."
As Pigeotto approached, Charmader prepared his attack. Pidgeotto was right in front of Charmander when he lauched his Ember attack. Pidgeotto fought through the attack and slammed into Charmander, causing it to stumble.
"Keep up the pressure, Pidgeotto. Use Gust."
Pidgeotto flapped its powerful wings and tried to blow Charmander away.
"Charmander, hold your ground and use Ember again."
Charmander dug in and launched another Ember attack.
"Pidgeotto, dodge and use Wing Attack!"
Pidgeotto used its speed to dodge and slammed into Charmander again.
"Charmander, use Scratch."
Charmander used its claws to scratch Pidgeotto.
"Finish this up. Use Wing Attack again."
Pidgeotto took off and charged into Charmander again.
"Charmander, use Ember again."
Charmander waited until Pidgeotto closed in and then launched a sphere of purple energy.
"Sweet. Charmander learned Dragon Rage."
Charmander's Dragon Rage startled Pidgeotto, but it took the attack head on and slammed into Charmader with its powerful wings, knocking out the fire lizard. Robert thanked Charmander for the good battle and chose his next Pokémon.
"Go, Pikachu!"
Pikachu emerged from its Pokeball and was ready to battle.
"Pidgeotto, use Quick Attack!"
"Pikachu, you use Quick Attack as well."
Both Pokémon charged at each other at blinding speed.
"Pikachu, Thundershock!"
Pikachu stopped right before it collided with Pidgeotto and launched a Thundershock right into its face. Pidgeotto could not avoid the attack and skidded across the ground, knocked out. Blue returned Pidgeotto and selected his next Pokémon.
"Raticate, let's go!"
The large rodent Pokémon appeared and stared at the electric mouse Pokémon across from it. Both trainers called out their next move simultaneously:
"Quick Attack!"
Both Pikachu and Raticate were fast, but the larger mass of Raticate dealt more damage as the Pokémon collided with each other.
"Pikachu, launch a Thundershock attack."
Pikachu's attack struck Raticate, but it shook it off and prepared its next attack.
"Raticate, Use Hyper Fang"
Raticate lunged at Pikachu with its fangs out, striking Pikachu. The attack dealt heavy damage to Pikachu, but it also paralyzed Raticate due to Pikachu's Static.
Robert saw this and thought to himself:
"Raticate is paralyzed and Pikachu is heavily damaged. I should try and finish this quickly."
Blue also noticed the paralysis and knew he only had one option against the now faster Pikachu.
"Raticate, use Quick Attack once more."
"Charge in and use Iron Tail, Pikachu."
Raticate tried to build up speed to use Quick Attack, but the paralysis took hold and prevented it from moving. Pikachu charged in and landed an Iron Tail attack onto Raticate's face, knocking it out.
"Excellent work, Pikachu. Are you okay to keep battling?"
Pikachu was panting heavily, but nodded at its trainer. Blue returned Raticate to his Pokeball and knew he was in trouble. He only had Squirtle left and it would have to defeat both Pikachu and the Abra he knew Robert still had left. He wasn't going to give up, however. He was going down fighting.
"Squirtle, you're up."
The turtle Pokémon was ready to battle.
"Pikachu, Thundershock attack!"
"Water Gun, Squirtle."
Both Pokémon launched their attacks and watched as they soared past each other. Squirtle managed to dodge the Thundershock attack just in time. Pikachu was too exhausted to dodge, and the Water Gun struck it and knocked it out.
"Good battling, buddy." Robert said as he returned Pikachu to its ball.
Blue felt relieved that Pikachu was defeated, but that feeling quickly turned into dread as Robert revealed his final Pokémon.
"Time to finish this up. Kadabra!"
Robert's Psychic Pokémon appeared at looked at Squirtle with a glare.
"Squirtle, Water Gun."
"Kadabra, use Teleport to dodge and use Confusion afterwards."
Squirtle's attack missed as Kadabra teleported away and then appeared directly in front of Squirtle. Kadabra's Confusion attack landed a direct hit onto Squirtle.
"Squirtle, use Tackle now that Kadabra is in close."
Squirtle's Tackle attack struck Kadabra and sent it skidding across the battlefield.
"Kadabra, use Confusion again."
Kadabra launched its attack and Squirtle attempted to dodge it, but couldn't move.
"Oh fuck. Pikachu's Thundershock must have paralyzed Squirtle."
Kadabra's attack struck Squirtle and knocked it out, finishing the battle.
"Good job, Kadabra."
Kadabra nodded as Robert returned it to its Pokeball. Blue returned Squirtle, thanked it for a good battle, and walked across the battlefield to shake Robert's hand.
"Thank you for a good battle." Blue said.
"You're welcome. We'll have to do it again sometime."
Blue nodded and asked Robert a question.
"Are you headed up to meet Bill?"
"Who's Bill?
"Bill is a PokéManiac and a friend of my grandfather, Professor Oak. I went to visit him, but he wasn't there. Maybe you will have better luck."
"Sure. I needed something to do. See you later, Blue."
"Smell ya later!"
Blue left as Robert went and healed his Pokémon before headed up the hill towards Bill's cottage.
Robert battled some trainers along the way towards the cottage. When he reached it, he looked inside and didn't see anyone. He decided to check the door to see if it was locked. He turned the knob of the door and it opened.
"Hello, is anyone here?" Robert asked.
"Oh thank goodness. Can you please help me?"
Robert entered the cottage and didn't see anyone.
"I'm down here."
Robert looked down and saw what looked like a Clefairy.
"Bill?"
"Yes, that's me. Could you help me?"
"I can try. What do you need me to do?"
"Could you please hit the button on my computer when I enter the teleporter?"
"Sure."
Bill skipped into the teleporter and closed the door. Robert hit the button and the teleporter activated. It made lots of noise and then stopped. Afterwards, a man stepped out of the teleporter on one said and a Clefairy hopped out on the other side.
"Oh thank goodness. I thought I was going to be stuck as a Clefairy. Thanks for all your help."
"You're welcome, Bill."
"How can I repay you? Here, you can have my ticket to the S.S. Anne. It's a cruise ship that will be docking in Vermillion City soon. I was invited to a party on board, but I can't make it. Go and have a good time."
"Thanks. You didn't have to."
"It's the least I could do."
Robert thanked Bill again as he left the cottage and walked out to a beautiful sunset.
Misty was standing looking out across the sparkling waters and sighed. She had been defending her Gym and starting to get bored. The only challenger that defeated her recently was a boy with a red hat. She had also been frustrated that her ex-boyfriend had been taunting her for weeks about the wonderful new girl he was dating.
"I'm going to make him pay for this!" she thought to herself.
Robert spotted her after leaving the cottage and approached her.
"Aren't you Misty, the Cerulean City Gym Leader?"
"Yes. Who are you?" she asked
"My name is Robert. I am looking to challenge your Gym."
"I see. We can battle tomorrow. Hope you're ready to lose."
"I have no intention of losing. See you tomorrow, Misty."
Robert left Misty to rest up for his Gym battle tomorrow. Misty smiled as he left.
"He'll be perfect."
What does Misty have in store for Robert? We'll find out next time!
