Yuugi Chapter 3
Wow omg hi it's me! Good news, I'm not dead! Thank you to the Guest who messaged me awhile ago. I've been drowning in schoolwork for the past year and completely pulled back on writing for leisure because of all the papers I've had to write for class. So, thank you random guest for reaching out, it really motivated me to finish this chapter!
Important Note: I'll still be updating on here , but I will also now be uploading this to ao3 under the username Gem_Zed
"Home?" Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to come back...
"You seem to be settling down well all things considered. I thought we should celebrate your arrival." With the flick of his wrist and a twirl of his finger, a serving knife and a plate appeared in Yami's hands. He sliced a piece of the cake and plated it. "Come, sit." He gestured to the cushion next to him. Yuugi frowned at the couch cushion. He had so many questions he wasn't sure where to begin. "Little one, you look troubled. Is there something you wish to ask?"
As much as he'd love to ask about getting a better nickname, Yuugi supposed he should start with his most recent burning question. "So...before I came over here, there were some boxes that my Grandpa told me to unpack but all of them were empty. You didn't do anything...did you?"
Yami placed the plate on the table before answering. "I have infinite control over this realm, but that is not the case in yours." Yami sounded convincing but...something in his eyes made him suspicious. "Your Grandfather must have forgotten he had done it himself. You know what they say, the mind goes with age."
"I guess so…" Yuugi shuffled his feet, "I…have another question. I found a doll in Grandpa's things. It looks a lot like you, is it yours?"
"Possibly. I have lost many things over the years."
He dreaded the idea of asking…but "…how many years?"
"A few hand-fulls of decades in this house."
Yuugi felt the pit in the bottom of his stomach deepen. "Yami…how old are you?"
For just a moment, he could have sworn Yami's eyes were glowing in the darkness of the room. "Forgive me." he chuckled, "But I did not expect such a long line of questioning." Yami grabbed the plate and stood. His heels clicked on the polished hardwood as he glided towards Yuugi. "Here, eat this. Then you may resume your questions."
"Um…thank you." Yuugi warily took the offered slice. With Yami's expectant look trained on him, he lifted the fork to his lips and took a hesitant bite. It was wonderful-he hadn't expected any less-but given the nauseating circumstances, the dessert may as well have been sickeningly sweet.
Yami leaned in, "Is it to your liking?"
"Uh, yeah. Yeah, it's good."
He raised a sceptic eyebrow and leaned in closer. This time, Yuugi took a step back. "It is, really I just…have a lot on my mind."
"Well then, might I suggest a distraction?"
"That's nice of you, but I have more unpacking to do and-"
"-All the more reason to take a break!" Yami took the plate from his hands and set it back on the table. He gripped Yuugi's hand in his and pulled him along. "Come now, we are going to play a game."
Yami lead him into his 'other' bedroom and opened the closet were Yuugi had stored his games in the 'other other' world er…world number one. But, instead of the cramped little space with a crooked shelf, he was greeted with a whole other room! No- room was too small a word, it was more like a whole library of games, so many he's sure he'd never heard of them all. Walking in, he could see the stars twinkle overhead through the glass dome. On one end of the room there was a great fireplace, already ablaze. In front of it, there was a table and a set of two chairs. Other leather seating peppered the rest of the floorspace on the main level. The second level was much of the same thing, towering walls of games so high he'd never dare climb the ladders to retrieve one.
"How is this possible?" There most certainly wasn't room for this in the normal construction of the house.
The click of heels echoed on the marble flooring as Yami strolled up beside him. "Space is not a construct this world abides by."
He didn't know where to look. "Have you played all of these?"
"Regrettably, no. Most of them require more than one person."
That sense of pity Yuugi previously felt returned full force. Before Anzu, he'd been alone too. Maybe not total-and-complete-isolation alone, but he knew what it was like to yearn for company when there was none to be had.
So, maybe just a few games wouldn't hurt.
"Do you have a favorite?"
Yami seemed taken aback by the question, if his owlish stare was anything to go by. Quickly regaining his composure, he ushered Yuugi to the table before the fireplace. There was a worn box on the mantle he hadn't noticed before. When Yami retrieved it and placed in front of him, he thought he recognized it. "Senet?"
Yami smiled pleasantly and took his own seat, "Correct."
Since it'd been awhile, Yuugi had asked for a refresher on the rules, but Yami's explanation was completely different than what his Grandfather had taught him. So different -and complicated- in fact that they'd needed to play multiple rounds before Yuugi was comfortable playing without asking a question every turn. Needless to say – Yami wiped the floor with him. The whole time however, there was a question nagging in the back of his mind: how old Yami must be to know what could only be the original rules of the game…
Unfortunately, when he felt he understood the rules well enough to put up a decent fight, he could barely keep his eyes open. It seemed Yami had noticed his predicament by the time he'd set up the pieces for another round. His expression became unreadable as he took in Yugi's sorry state. After a few moments of observation, he stood and offered a hand. "Come, let us get you to bed."
Yuugi nodded in agreement and took the offered hand. They made their way to the other side of the door where his 'other bedroom' was waiting.
When Yami ushered him toward the bed however, he stopped. "I need to go back, Grandpa will be worried."
Yami placed a hand on his back, nudging him forward. "Nonsense, your bed is all made up for you here."
Alarm bells were ringing through the fog in his mind. He dug his heels into the aged hardwood. "It's not that far, I'd rather sleep in my own bed anyway."
He was about ready to wrestle himself out of Yami's grip when a sudden unnatural wave of exhaustion overcame him. He almost worked up the energy to protest when he was laid down, but he was just so tired. One thing rang in his mind before sleep took him.
He hoped Grandpa found that note…
It (obviously) took me forever to write this. I wasn't super sure what to do with the story next but I think I've got it mostly figured out. I've already got some of the next chapter typed up so hopefully I'll get it to ya'll sooner rather then later.
I hope you guys like it!
Oh! By the way, I have a tumblr if any of you are interested. I don't post a lot, but if you just want to follow more ygo blogs, maybe check mine out! The link is in my writer bio.
