Anna started awake, shivering as an icy wind swept through her bedroom. She sat up, looking around sleepily, her brow furrowing when she saw that the window was securely shut. Just as she got out of bed to double check the window latch, the ground shook beneath her feet, sending her staggering toward the door. She tried to smooth the wrinkles out of the clothes she had fallen asleep in as she raced through the castle.
Anna burst out the castle's main gate, stumbling as the cobblestones under her feet rose and fell several inches. She managed to make it across the bridge and into town, where she stopped for a moment to get her bearings.
Gusts of freezing wind swept through the town and there were strange diamond-shaped crystals suspended in the air. Anna poked at one experimentally and it glided gently away, leaving a tingling sensation in her fingertip. She rubbed the tip of her finger with her thumb, looking up when she heard a commotion coming down the street.
The citizens of Arendelle were pouring from their homes, many still dressed in their nightgowns. Anna brushed the crystal out of her way and began guiding people out of town. Several guards arrived soon after and joined in the effort, doing their best to help people stay upright on the cobblestones that were still roiling under their feet.
Anna saw Kristoff using Sven to ferry several children out of town. She waved to get his attention and he waved back, pointing at the people on Sven's back and then to the road out of town. Anna nodded and turned back to the line of people streaming out of the city, then frowned. The streets were almost empty, but she had yet to see Elsa or Sera.
Anna closed her eyes and brought her hands up to shield her face as another blast of cold wind rushed around her. When she opened her eyes again, Elsa and Sera appeared at the end of the street. Elsa looked completely disoriented, but Sera spotted Anna and headed in her direction.
Anna ran toward them as best she could, grabbing Elsa's arm and looking her over quickly to see if she had been hurt. Elsa seemed to almost vibrate with energy, her eyes darting around without taking anything in. "Elsa," Anna said, waiting until Elsa looked at her before continuing. "Elsa, are you okay? What's happening?"
Elsa gripped Anna's hand. "There was this voice and it called me, and I reached out and now there's so much magic—"
"Wait, a voice called to you? What voice?" Anna groaned in frustration as Elsa's eyes unfocused. "Elsa, did you do this?"
Elsa opened her mouth to respond, but Sera cut her off. "Let's get out of here first," she said gesturing down the street. "We can figure out what's going on once we're safe."
Anna clenched her jaw but nodded and helped usher Elsa out of town.
Anna handed a blanket to a villager who was in nothing but their nightgown, giving them a small, reassuring smile. The person returned the smile half-heartedly, moving out of the way of the next person in line. The townsfolk were milling at the edge of the forest, many people still in shock and with several children crying. Sera and Kristoff were helping hand out supplies as Bristin directed the guards to make lean-tos out of branches they had gathered from the underbrush. Elsa was standing apart from the crowd, pacing back and forth as snow fell in the area just around her.
Another villager approached and Anna passed them her final blanket. She looked at Elsa again, hesitating for a moment before walking over to her. She stopped a few feet away, waiting for Elsa to acknowledge her, but Elsa didn't look in her direction.
"Elsa," Anna said carefully, still not able to tell if Elsa was paying any attention to her. "What's going on? What happened to the town? What happened to you?"
Elsa looked down at her hands, opening and closing them as tendrils of ice danced around her fingers. "Can't you feel it?" she asked. She turned to look at Anna, who shook her head. "The magic is so strong now."
Anna was about to continue her questioning, but Sera and Kristof appeared on either side of her.
"I think everyone made it out okay, and no one was injured," Kristoff said, shaking his head. "I just don't understand what happened. The ground was actually moving, and the wind pretty much pushed us out of town. And what were all those crystal things in the air?"
"I think Elsa might know," Anna said slowly. "But she won't tell me what's going on."
Elsa looked between the three of them, blinking rapidly as she struggled to focus. It took another moment before she was able to string the right words together. "Like I said, this voice was calling to me and I was ignoring it at first. But I finally reached out and there's so much magic now, all around us. I don't know how you can't feel it."
Anna narrowed her eyes and her brow furrowed. "You've been hearing a voice? What kind of voice? For how long? And why didn't you tell anyone?"
"I told Sera about it," Elsa said waving her hand as she turned to start pacing again. "I just didn't want you to worry."
Anna's face hardened. "You told Sera, but not anyone else." Her hands balled into fists at her sides. "I thought we agreed not to keep secrets anymore."
Elsa spun around to pace in the other direction, seemingly oblivious to Anna's growing anger. "I told you, I didn't want anyone to worry. But this is so exciting now, I can't believe I waited this long."
Anna pressed her lips into a thin line and took a deep breath before speaking again. "Elsa, why would you listen to this voice? It's obviously up to no good. Look what it did to the town!"
Elsa shook her head. "No, it's not evil, I can tell. It wants to show me something, something good."
Anna opened her mouth to respond but Kristoff jumped in before she could speak again. "If we go to what the voice wants to show you, will the town go back to normal?"
Elsa paused, putting her hand on her chin as she thought. "Yes," she said finally.
Kristoff nodded. "Well, then I guess we have to follow the voice if we want our town back. Do you know where it wants you to go?"
Elsa closed her eyes and concentrated for a moment before raising her arm and pointing to the north.
"North it is then. I'll figure out where I can get a sled and we can all set out in the morning." Kristoff turned to Anna, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "We'll figure this out, together, and put things right."
Anna clenched her jaw and spun around, stalking away from the group without looking back. She stopped about twenty feet away, watching Bristin and the guards organizing people into lines to get their share of the food that was being prepared. She heard footsteps approaching and Kristoff appeared at her side.
They watched the guards and the townsfolk in silence for a few moments until Kristoff spoke. "Bristin can be a hard-ass sometimes, but he really knows how to handle a crisis."
"He does." Anna sighed and shook her head. "I don't think he's going to be happy when I explain what's going on though."
Kristoff chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. "Oh, definitely not. I would maybe leave out the part about Elsa causing all this, he might blow his top. Just let him know we'll be gone for a few days."
"That's a good idea. He wouldn't be happy if he knew this was Elsa's fault." Anna's face hardened. "I'm certainly not happy about it, either."
Kristoff sighed. "Anna, I know you're mad, and I get why, but I think Elsa is really going to need your help in this." He waited for a moment, watching Anna closely as she frowned and refused to look at him. "I've never seen Elsa like this, she's not one to ignore consequences. She's going to need you to keep her grounded during all of this, so she doesn't lose herself in whatever she's woken up."
"Maybe she should've thought of the before waking up the forest magic," Anna muttered, crossing her arms.
Kristoff held up his hands with his palms facing her. "You're right, she should have. But she didn't, and she's going to need you to get through this. Just like she's stood by you when you make impulsive decisions." He put a gentle hand on Anna's shoulder. "Just try to remember that, for both your sakes."
Anna ground her teeth, stewing in silence for a few seconds. Then she gave Kristoff the smallest of nods before walking away.
